Texans random thought of the day

I wonder if next year Savage and Osweiler will be in open competition for the QB spot next year during training camp because of the small sample size on Savage and give Brent another offseason to learn the system?

If Savage is the guy, the merry-go-round was worth it. Too many teams stick by failed draft choices and F/A acquisitions far too long (Bortles). Give B.Ob a little credit here, he may be as indecisive as a woman (no offense to any ladies reading/posting here) but at least he will cut bait with failed experiments within 1 to 1.5 seasons.

Side note: B.Ob chose those experiments so he should be held accountable, but I would take that over sitting and watching Cutler/Bradford/Palmer cough Brock cough dash the season to justify their contract/vet status.

It is time to finally see his guy he selected and has been grooming. Agree if we have the guy for a fourth round pick, the merry go round was worth it. I do get ervous when you pick that high 1st rounder and they Bortles it, you are stuck for 3-4 years typically and it sets your franchise back.

Nah... he could have stuck with Keenum & Yates if we're bringing in guys like Fitz (love him) & Hoyer. Maybe we'd have Brandon Brooks & Ben Jones here (though I'm happy with Mancz & Martin).

QB Index: Who needs a new quarterback for 2017?
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000760674/article/qb-index-who-needs-a-new-quarterback-for-2017

Houston Texans: Coach Bill O'Brien put his cards on the table this week, sticking with third-year pro Tom Savage -- thrust into his first action last week since December 2014 -- as his starting quarterback for the final games of a playoff run. The Brock OsweilerExperiment is on pause, but the Texans still owe him $16 million guaranteed next season, so he's likely not going anywhere.

One option for the Texans: Simply bring back Savage and Osweiler, an alternative that will appear more palatable if Savage plays well in the coming weeks. The Texans haven't selected a quarterback in the first three rounds during the 11 seasons GM Rick Smith has been in Houston. It's a mind-boggling stat bordering on malpractice, considering Smith's best quarterback throughout that run was Matt Schaub. Don't rule out another draft pick being added to the mix, and keep an eye on how O'Brien and Smith are getting along.

I've been thinking about where BoB stands in McNair's eyes given BoB's qb carousel history and this most recent move to bench Brock. We're all tired of the carousel and I've got to imagine McNair is as well.

I don't want to jinx anything but what if Savage stinks it up to end the year? Is BoB's fate now tied to Savage - he's fired with a new coach asked to make things work with Brock next year?

Or he keeps BoB and we draft a new qb?

Or something else?

Keeps BOB and we draft a new QB. If that fails then BOB is gone!

While I think he's highly likely to be retained even if the Texans finish 8-8, I think the chances of O'Brien being fired at 9-7 (playoffs or not) are zero.

And I honestly don't think Savage stinking it up (Please, no - please, please, please no) will have anything to do with anything. Any failure and damage done to anybody's future job security isn't going to come from the play of a fourth round draft pick taken 3 years ago, but rather the guy they guaranteed $37 Million to less than 10 months ago (And it's anyone's guess as to where (or if) the blame gets placed for that).

Thanks for the input guys. Agreed with hoping Savage plays well CT. I probably should have given the scenario of Savage being JAG next year instead of playing poorly this year. It just seems that McNair must be getting close to the end of the road with BoB if things with Savage don't work out. Hopefully Savage is the guy and we don't have to think about this kind of thing.

But like this year - where Brock was a dumpster fire - if the Texans overcome poor QB'ing and make the playoffs, it's going to be tough for McNair to walk away from his HC. Now the bar may be a bit higher (it may take the playoffs), but if JJ's back and close to what he was (not a given I know), and Clowney continues to develop into a force, the 2017 D could make up for some pretty low-level QB play.

I just don't think McNair's going to fire his HC if the overall product is one he's okay with - even if one specific part is garbage.

Good points. We may want to rebuild our offense this off-season into a true power running team if there are still qb question marks at the end of the year. With the d you mentioned, we would have a chance.

If there's some animosity between Bill & Rick, I could see a move happening.

Not that I think there's anything in particular going on right now. just saying. McNair has been pretty clear on wanting his GM & HC on the same page.

Bill O'Brien could have lost Texans locker room had he stuck with Brock Osweiler
Texans players were more than ready to see Tom Savage under center last Sunday
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/b...locker-room-had-he-stuck-with-brock-osweiler/

"Osweiler was pursued heavily by ownership with the coaching staff having a minimal role, sources said, and even with him due $37 million guaranteed through the 2017 season, the decision to go to Savage was highly popular in the locker room."

Texans still looking for answers in the red zone
By John McClain
Published 4:02 pm, Monday, December 26, 2016

The Texans are so inept on offense, they rank 31st in red zone touchdowns. They score at a 39-percent rate. The only team that's worse is the New York Jets (36.2 percent).

The Texans, 9-6 and champions of the AFC South, take a three-game winning streak to Tennessee for the last regular-season game. They have scored one touchdown in each of those three victories.

"We have to score more," coach Bill O'Brien said Monday. "We've got to score more than one touchdown. We have to play better on offense. We get that. We work hard to put together a plan, but we have to put together a better plan."

Improvement must start in the red zone.

Before quarterback Marcus Mariota was injured in Sunday's loss at Jacksonville, the Titans were first in red zone touchdowns with a 71-percent conversion rate.

"We've been a good red zone team in the past," O'Brien said. "It's not like we don't know what we're doing in the red zone. It just looks that way because we haven't been good in the red zone."

In 2014, O'Brien's first season, the Texans were tied for 13th (54.2 percent) in red zone touchdowns. Last season, they finished 13th (57.8) again.

Yet, they have a chance to finish 10-6, their best record under O'Brien, despite their red zone deficiencies and their horrible minus-7 turnover differential.

"There are different ways to approach the red area," O'Brien said. "We've been in the red area quite a bit, so that's a positive. The problem is you have to score touchdowns and not kick field goals.

"You don't want third-and-goal from the 8 or 10. Those are difficult play calls, and we've had a lot of those lately.

"We've got to do a better job coaching and executing."

Looking at Brock Osweiler’s Contract

http://overthecap.com/looking-brock-osweilers-contract/

Somehow the Texans, who had been desperately searching for a quarterback, deemed him the answer and made the bold signing that paid Osweiler $21 million this year, including a $12 million signing bonus.

I think this is the falacy of their argument. I don't think the Texans thought Osweiler was the answer. only a possible answer. He was given two years to prove he is the answer.

It's only a little different than franchising Cousins. or signing Fitzpatrick for one year $12M.

I doubt the Texans have given up on Osweiler. Just like the Broncos haven't given up on Lynch or the Rams haven't given up on Goff. or the Vikings haven't given up on Bridgewater.

It's not like that story has anything that is news to this. We knew we were wedded to BO for at least two years. Most of us were just happy they made an effort to fix the position. BO was a crapshoot and we hoped for the best... maybe it'll turn out but doubtfully. Still... making the effort was worthwhile. The FA marketplace was slim and the draft too expensive, until Prescott turned out even better than his staunchest supporters hoped for

Vince Wilfork's Son Arrested with a Bunch of Codeine

Vince Wilfork's 19-year-old son was arrested last week after cops say he was in possession of a BUNCH of codeine -- and he now faces up to 20 YEARS in prison ... TMZ Sports has learned.

D'Aundre Holmes-Wilfork -- a safety at the University of Houston -- was in a 2011 Kia that was pulled over for a routine traffic stop in Friendswood, Texas around midnight on Dec. 21st.

According to the police report, cops found 381 grams of codeine -- and arrested D'Aundre on the spot for possession of substance in penalty group 4 ... which is a felony.

If convicted, D'Aundre faces 2 to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Poor Vince. He literally sacrifices his health and probably given his kids everything they could want and one of them does something stupid like this. I am sure Vince has the money to get him off on a lesser crime and probation, but he is one person I would not want to piss off. Jail may be a better option for the kid than facing his dad.

Im very pleased that we were able to win the division championship 2 years in a row. Great accomplishment. Obviously we dont have the kind of offense to do much more than that this year. Our defense is one of the best. Offense one of the worst. Sounds just like last year about this time. That's why I wanted us to draft all offense last draft, because our offense was so bad. A year later, no improvement to speak of. Just as bad. That's the biggest disappointment this season. Piss poor offensive team. We need to improve the OL, improve at running back behind Miller and maybe fullback position as well, and get something done at quarterback.

I think there's still room for growth with our current players. who knows, going into the playoffs just knowing the defense had carried their butts.. we may see the explosion on offense we hoped to see.

We know what Hopkins can do. we know what Fiedorowicz & Griffin can do.. we know what Miller can do. Tom Savage is a wild card right now.

If George & Bill would see what we're seeing & use what they got instead of what they want, who knows what can happen.

It was just one play, but that wheel route to Hunt, beautiful.

If they can work simple jab step into their run game, we can have a championship ground attack.

We'll see

Doesn't say much but I guess WFV has had the best rookie season...by default really but still. It's something.

HOW ALL 31 FIRST-ROUND PICKS HAVE PLAYED THIS SEASON
https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-how-every-2016-first-round-pick-has-played-this-season/

15. Corey Coleman, WR, Browns (Baylor)
Snaps: 473

PFF overall grade: 53.5

It’s hard to judge anything in the Cleveland offense this season given the revolving door at quarterback. Corey Coleman has a 58-yard reception to his name and has broken eight tackles after the catch on only 28 receptions, but he has also caught only 50.9 percent of the passes thrown his way and dropped four balls.

21. Will Fuller, WR, Texans (Notre Dame)
Snaps: 756

PFF overall grade: 68.6

Quarterback woes have hamstrung the entire Houston offense, so it’s hard to know what Will Fuller could have achieved with some more competent play there, but he has put up 611 receiving yards on 44 catches, scoring twice. He also has six drops to his name and a few more that have flirted with the floor before being brought in.

22. Josh Doctson, WR, Redskins (TCU)
Snaps: 31

PFF overall grade: N/A

Josh Doctson’s rookie season has been blighted by injury, and he had only seen the field in two games—the first two of the year—before being placed on IR, ending his season.

23. Laquon Treadwell, WR, Vikings (Ole Miss)
Snaps: 79

PFF overall grade: N/A

At midseason, Laquon Treadwell had seen just 11 snaps on offense, and while that workload has increased exponentially over the second half of the year, his total still sits at just 79. He has seen three targets all season, catching one pass for 15 yards the first time the ball was thrown his way.

I missed that one. Got a link to the video clip of it?
The Cincy LB got caught trying to blitz when he should have been in coverage. Savage saw it and took advantage of the LBs missed assignment. Had Hunt cut just a little toward midfield after the catch, that could have been six bacause the LB had to make a desperation tackle.
