The Texas NFL teams could be paying a combined $1.23 million to starting QBs in 2017, $30 million to backups
Side note: B.Ob chose those experiments so he should be held accountable, but I would take that over sitting and watching Cutler/Bradford/Palmer cough Brock cough dash the season to justify their contract/vet status.
Houston Texans: Coach Bill O'Brien put his cards on the table this week, sticking with third-year pro Tom Savage -- thrust into his first action last week since December 2014 -- as his starting quarterback for the final games of a playoff run. The Brock OsweilerExperiment is on pause, but the Texans still owe him $16 million guaranteed next season, so he's likely not going anywhere.
One option for the Texans: Simply bring back Savage and Osweiler, an alternative that will appear more palatable if Savage plays well in the coming weeks. The Texans haven't selected a quarterback in the first three rounds during the 11 seasons GM Rick Smith has been in Houston. It's a mind-boggling stat bordering on malpractice, considering Smith's best quarterback throughout that run was Matt Schaub. Don't rule out another draft pick being added to the mix, and keep an eye on how O'Brien and Smith are getting along.
I've been thinking about where BoB stands in McNair's eyes given BoB's qb carousel history and this most recent move to bench Brock. We're all tired of the carousel and I've got to imagine McNair is as well.
I don't want to jinx anything but what if Savage stinks it up to end the year? Is BoB fired with a new coach asked to make things work with Brock next year?
Or he keeps BoB and we draft a new qb?
Or something else?
While I think he's highly likely to be retained even if the Texans finish 8-8, I think the chances of O'Brien being fired at 9-7 (playoffs or not) are zero.I've been thinking about where BoB stands in McNair's eyes given BoB's qb carousel history and this most recent move to bench Brock. Keeps BOB and we draft a new QB. If that fails then BOB is gone!
Thanks for the input guys. Agreed with hoping Savage plays well CT. I probably should have given the scenario of Savage being JAG next year instead of playing poorly this year. It just seems that McNair must be getting close to the end of the road with BoB if things with Savage don't work out. Hopefully Savage is the guy and we don't have to think about this kind of thing. While I think he's highly likely to be retained even if the Texans finish 8-8, I think the chances of O'Brien being fired at 9-7 (playoffs or not) are zero.
And I honestly don't think Savage stinking it up (Please, no - please, please, please no) will have anything to do with anything. Any failure and damage done to anybody's future job security isn't going to come from the play of a fourth round draft pick taken 3 years ago, but rather the guy they guaranteed $37 Million to less than 10 months ago (And it's anyone's guess as to where (or if) the blame gets placed for that).
But like this year - where Brock was a dumpster fire - if the Texans overcome poor QB'ing and make the playoffs, it's going to be tough for McNair to walk away from his HC. Now the bar may be a bit higher (it may take the playoffs), but if JJ's back and close to what he was (not a given I know), and Clowney continues to develop into a force, the 2017 D could make up for some pretty low-level QB play. Thanks for the input guys. Good points. We may want to rebuild our offense this off-season into a true power running team if there are still qb question marks at the end of the year. With the d you mentioned, we would have a chance. But like this year - where Brock was a dumpster fire - if the Texans overcome poor QB'ing and make the playoffs, it's going to be tough for McNair to walk away from his HC. I just don't think McNair's going to fire his HC if the overall product is one he's okay with - even if one specific part is garbage.

Tom Savage is Nic Cage
The last time a team benched BO they won the Super Bowl. Hmmmmm.
How pissed off would JJ and all our other stars that are on IR be? I hope it happens
Clark is starting at RT? Newton has lost his starting position?
Now that you mention it, I remember. Thanks.Newton lost the ability to walk for several months in the MNF Denver game...
Looks as if the Broncos fans have similar complaints about Kubiak that we had here we he coached here.Last year's SB contestants are both going to enjoy this year's playoffs from the comfort of their own living rooms.
Looking at Brock Osweiler’s Contract
http://overthecap.com/looking-brock-osweilers-contract/
Somehow the Texans, who had been desperately searching for a quarterback, deemed him the answer and made the bold signing that paid Osweiler $21 million this year, including a $12 million signing bonus.
I think this is the falacy of their argument. I don't think the Texans thought Osweiler was the answer. only a possible answer. He was given two years to prove he is the answer.
Vince Wilfork's Son Arrested with a Bunch of Codeine
Vince Wilfork's 19-year-old son was arrested last week after cops say he was in possession of a BUNCH of codeine -- and he now faces up to 20 YEARS in prison ... TMZ Sports has learned.
D'Aundre Holmes-Wilfork -- a safety at the University of Houston -- was in a 2011 Kia that was pulled over for a routine traffic stop in Friendswood, Texas around midnight on Dec. 21st.
According to the police report, cops found 381 grams of codeine -- and arrested D'Aundre on the spot for possession of substance in penalty group 4 ... which is a felony.
If convicted, D'Aundre faces 2 to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Im very pleased that we were able to win the division championship 2 years in a row. Great accomplishment. Obviously we dont have the kind of offense to do much more than that this year. Our defense is one of the best. Offense one of the worst. Sounds just like last year about this time. That's why I wanted us to draft all offense last draft, because our offense was so bad. A year later, no improvement to speak of. Just as bad. That's the biggest disappointment this season. Piss poor offensive team. We need to improve the OL, improve at running back behind Miller and maybe fullback position as well, and get something done at quarterback.
It was just one play, but that wheel route to Hunt, beautiful.
I missed that one. Got a link to the video clip of it?
15. Corey Coleman, WR, Browns (Baylor)
Snaps: 473
PFF overall grade: 53.5
It’s hard to judge anything in the Cleveland offense this season given the revolving door at quarterback. Corey Coleman has a 58-yard reception to his name and has broken eight tackles after the catch on only 28 receptions, but he has also caught only 50.9 percent of the passes thrown his way and dropped four balls.
21. Will Fuller, WR, Texans (Notre Dame)
Snaps: 756
PFF overall grade: 68.6
Quarterback woes have hamstrung the entire Houston offense, so it’s hard to know what Will Fuller could have achieved with some more competent play there, but he has put up 611 receiving yards on 44 catches, scoring twice. He also has six drops to his name and a few more that have flirted with the floor before being brought in.
22. Josh Doctson, WR, Redskins (TCU)
Snaps: 31
PFF overall grade: N/A
Josh Doctson’s rookie season has been blighted by injury, and he had only seen the field in two games—the first two of the year—before being placed on IR, ending his season.
23. Laquon Treadwell, WR, Vikings (Ole Miss)
Snaps: 79
PFF overall grade: N/A
At midseason, Laquon Treadwell had seen just 11 snaps on offense, and while that workload has increased exponentially over the second half of the year, his total still sits at just 79. He has seen three targets all season, catching one pass for 15 yards the first time the ball was thrown his way.
The Cincy LB got caught trying to blitz when he should have been in coverage. Savage saw it and took advantage of the LBs missed assignment. Had Hunt cut just a little toward midfield after the catch, that could have been six bacause the LB had to make a desperation tackle.I missed that one. Got a link to the video clip of it?
None of the whizkid WRs really stood out this season, huh?Doesn't say much but I guess WFV has had the best rookie season...by default really but still. It's something.
