Texans random thought of the day

Uh - the rebuild is done. What is being built?

Last year we were a game out of the AFC Championship ship game. With a rookie QB. We should be a better team with better results. Making it to the AFC Championship game isn’t icing on the cake. At a minimum we should have that better team and make it there (barring the injury bug and catastrophes).
This will be some of these guys second year in this offense and defense. Coach Ryans second year as the HC and Slowic’s year 2 as the OC. They do not have the experience like Andy Ried and Patrick Mahomas for an example.
So like I said if we make it that deep into the playoffs, it will be the icing on the cake. They still have to build their offense and defense up to be strong contenders like that imo. Do we have the tools and talent to get there, yes sir. Shoots my bold prediction is superbowl.

What I want to see from this season…..

I want to demolish the teams we should beat.

I want the good teams to have sleepless nights thinking about playing us!

I am not turning any grindstone regardless of what it ends up making me look like!

And how exactly would you “hold the team accountable?”

I for one would go on record and say that if the Texans aren’t in the AFC Championship game then they underperformed, don’t meet expectations, and wasted the season.

This team is built for more than just AFC South Division Championship Banners. It is built to win more.

I for one would be open to critiquing the GM, HC, OC, DC, QB, RB, WR, DE, CB, OL, etc. No one escapes accountability.

But I don’t think other posters are willing to go on record and open everyone up to fair criticism.

I would call a player into my garage to have a one on one for more feedback on an end of year evaluation but I don’t think they would show. So I am left to my message board ramblings.

Would you say you are a rambling man just doing the best you can?

In retrospect, that is a catchy phrase. 🤔 I might see if I can work into a song.

Anyway, it's time for leaving. I hope you'll understand ?

In Patrick Mahomes second year (2018-2019) he played in the AFC Championship game against a seasoned Brady and Belicheck.

I know, even without fully knowing, that Mahomes and Reid went into that game knowing that they could beat Brady.

NE won in overtime.

I believe the Texans 2024 team is just as good as the 2018 Chiefs were that year. I expect us to be playing in the AFC Championship game. To me that’s not icing on the cake. That is the minimum expectation. Icing on the cake is a Super Bowl appearance.

Anything less than being in the AFC Championship game will be a disappointing season.

To me it just depends on who they play in the divisional game, and how it goes. I will be disappointed regardless of when they're out of the playoffs, even if they lose in the Super Bowl. But I can't call any of it a failure if they make the playoffs until I know what exactly happened.

I thought the Conan reference was impressive me but this was very creative. I wish I was as creative as you people.

I am not like them.

I think I am dumb.

Or maybe just happy.

OK. How many teams do you believe have a better chance at winning the Super Bowl than the Texans? You don't need to list the teams, just the number of teams.
They have a very good chance of winning a SB if they can stay healthy.

There's not a team that they can't beat, but that 3 game stretch will be tough.

Andy Reid is one helluva coach. That’s the point you clearly missed. Ryan’s isn’t nowhere close to being on that level.

IMO Ryans may be close to Reeds equal on the defensive side of the ball. He also seems to have the knack of picking good assistant coaches & getting out of their way & letting them coach. That is a pretty good combination for a head coach. Also he's no slouch when it comes to motivating the players. If things fall right (injuries & such) I think there is a good chance of a SB appearance in our near future.

Depends if the officials decide, have a directive to call holding calls

I don't think it was your intent, but somehow you infer that the team would be OK with just another AFC South Division Champs banner.

How do we know that they don't have those same high expectations of themselves? How do we know that they won't hold themselves accountable?

I mean, if CJ has a sophomore slump, do we think he won't hold himself accountable? That Ryans won't hold him accountable? That Caserio wont? Hannah won't?

What criticism as a fan will you give that he would not have already given to himself? Or heard from his Coach/GM/Owner?

And I know you are talking about being able to have discussions about it around here and not get shut down by sunshine pumpers. And I agree that we should be able to. But that's not really holding them accountable as much as it is about voicing our frustrations as fans.

I just think as fans we truly have only one accountability lever at our disposal - our wallets. And IMO there are not going to be season ticket cancellations because they don't go to the AFCCG in Year 2 of the Ryans/Stroud Era.

I believe the Texans 2024 team is just as good as
We haven't even seen them with pads on. On the one hand I get what you're saying, on paper they match up with any team, better than most.

But this time last year we had an idea who would be in the starting lineup that was very different from opening day's starting line up.

Texans do in fact look like a very worthy team on paper…..only the paper hasn’t hit the turf in pads yet.

Lets give this new and improved team some time to breathe before anointing them a top 2 team in the AFC.

I’m extremely excited about the team Casserio and Ryans assembled this season, but like the team….I’ll evaluate on a weekly basis and give my opinion of that week.

I’m hoping the Texans have one hellacious and successful season.

If CJ builds on what he did last season I have a hard time seeing this team not at least being a top 5 team next season. If CJ comes back and has grown from last season if we are not at least in the conference championship game I'd be shocked.

That said, I expect CJ to have an even better year than last year.

I think the question is framed wrong. That’s for Vegas. I prefer to think of it in terms who can legitimately say they have a shot at the Lombardi. I get 12 that fit that mold, including the Texans.

I’d venture a figure out of the dark and say there is a 90% chance one of those 12 takes it all. There are way way too many variables to say who is better than whom in the middle of July. Injuries and all sorts of unexpected events (good and bad) can lift a team or cause it to underachieve.

Once in the playoffs, it’s one and done. Any number of fluky things can happen, a bounce here or there can be the difference. I plan to enjoy each week, and yes of course, analyze and critique both good and bad. But we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. It’s the toy box of life. I find I am much happier living in the moment - celebrating an amazing play, a comeback win, or some other moment that becomes etched in my mind than thinking about a Super Bowl or bust mindset. Go for it - but expect disappointment. Yes it’s possible…but it’s more likely to end short of the ultimate goal. The odds dictate that. Lions fans have been waiting how long?

Well, thanks for turning a simple question into something complicated. You said the Texans would "need a significant amount of luck to meet your expectations" of winning a Super Bowl. Of course, any team that wins the Super Bowl has more things go their way than against them. But, the Texans are among the top 8 in terms of odds to win the Super Bowl. They were among the final 8 teams in the playoffs, last season. And have increased their talent at several key positions. The Chiefs will need luck. No team has ever won 3 Super Bowls consecutively. The Niners will need luck, as will the Ravens, Bills, Eagles. Needing luck to win the Super Bowl is not exclusive to the Texans.

I liken the 2024 Texans to the 1992 Cowboys (whom I had the opportunity to watch many training camp practices due to living in walking distance to St. Edwards in Austin). The young Cowboys were coming off a winning season where they went 1-1 in the playoffs. In the offseason, the Cowboys acquired one of the top pass rushers in the game in Charles Haley. That ingredient pushed the Cowboys defense into one of the tops in the league. The 2024 Texans are similar in that they are a young team coming off a playoff season that added one of the top pass rushers in the game. Becoming a top 5 offense and defense is possible, just as the 1992 Cowboys were. All they need is their fair share of luck.

Maybe you're just preparing to hate?

What you're missing is that the teams the Texans will be playing will also be in a tough stretch of games. We'll find out who is tough enough.
That’s the point you clearly missed. Ryan’s isn’t nowhere close to being on that level.
Reid wasn't close to being Reid until he found Mahomes. Jimmy Johnson wasn't Jimmy Johnson until he won 2 Super Bowls. Once you win big, you're a legend.

Reid was pretty darn good with McNabb though. Would've been better if he could've kept McNabb from throwing up on his guys shoes in the clutch though.

Reid was good in Philly. 2002 COY. Took the Eagles to one Super Bowl (loss the Pats) in 2004. Just couldn't get the Eagles over the hump. Reid wasn't the Reid we know today. Where just about anything he draws up, Patrick Mahomes will make it look like gold. It took 2 decades before Reid got Mahomes. Maybe Ryans got his Mahomes from day 1?

If the offense is top 5, that means the Texans are going to be playing with a lot of leads and WA, Hunter, Barnett, Autry and company are going to eat.
I have been closely watching this team particularly since NC came in and things are ramping up quickly now with DR and CJ here.
From what I have seen, they are serious about making a tilt at the title this year.
No team is ever perfect at every position but the best teams have negligible weaknesses and Texans are thereabouts.
They are primed and apparently pumped.
Gonna be a great season barring key injuries.

I was thinking of that Giants team that beat Brady twice; Osi, JPP, Strahan.
The way the Texans dispatched the Browns in that rematch last year showed me who this team is and they are building on it.
Now they just have to keep putting that same moxie on the game day field - and from I have been seeing, the likelihood they will is high.

So many things have to go right to actually get to the SB and win it.

That applies to the Kansas City Chiefs and all other teams as well.

I would say it’s neither because they’re still trying to build their team up. If we make it to the AFC Championship game or even the Superbowl, that will be the icing on the cake.

How much more do they need to “build up”? Sure there’s question marks, but every team has those. The team that will win the Super Bowl this year has question marks, and will have weaknesses throughout the season. No team has the perfect roster.

A lot of talent on this Texans roster right now. A far cry better than a few years ago when you were up in arms with everyone about letting things play out whenever the lack of talent was pointed out. I think even you can see the difference in talent now.

And what’s just as important is the coaching. Huge improvement there as well. DeMeco Ryans is the real deal.

Teams can turn it around pretty quickly in the NFL and I think the Texans are legit AFC contenders at the very least. A lot of things still have to go right to get there and win it all, injuries, the way the ball bounces, overcoming horrible officiating, etc, but I think the Texans are right there with any of the contenders right now.

I know, I know, I’ve always been a prove it to me first type, but this may be the best roster on paper the Texans have ever had and I’ve never been more excited for a season to start since 2002. And that was just a happy to have football back thing.

I’m just going to go ahead and put it out there now. The French Quarter will be “swarm”ing with Texans fans the 2nd weekend of February.

I’m solely talking about building the offense and defense up. They have the weapons now but still will have to continue to develop the chemistry with those new additions on both sides. Teams have film on us now and we’re playing better competition. So can they make to to the Super Bowl with this roster, heck yeah. But in order to do that they will have build up their cohesiveness and chemistry throughout the season.
