Texans random thought of the day

I cannot find that anywhere searching internet. Can anyone provide link verifying what local TV will show game?
I googled NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC and ESPN schedule and none have Christmas Day scheduled.
Hehe, I think it's a little early, I can't see what's coming on in 3 weeks on my TV. My guess is CBS.

I literally showed you an exact linked article. And there are several like it. It's gonna be on the usual local affiliate, ABC or CBS in our case, just like as if it were a regular noon Sunday game. It's no different than if it were a Thurs Amazon game, it defaults to the local market for those in that area - ie, Houston and Baltimore.

We're all good as long as we don't get into another network/provider spat! (Have AT&T and I'm still peeved from last year.)

Still don't feel confident in the run game. I think it was our downfall last year and I wonder if we've done enough to fix it. Mixon might be better than Singletary but I don't think he's a game changer. Still a guy who most of the time will get what the oline can block for him, no more no less.

LT and RG are the same as last year, maybe we can hope for a bump in play quality as they get their second year in the system? At RT we should have an upgrade. Fant was a good pass protector last year but a bad run blocker. Howard is nothing special as a run blocker but he's average so should be an upgrade there. Center and LG were the problem spots. Hopefully Scruggs can move back to his natural position of center and take a sophomore leap. Then I guess we'll see who wins the competition at LG and go from there.

Seems like any hope of markedly improving the run game comes from

1. Players taking a leap heading into the second year in this system.
2. Hoping guys already on the roster play better

Doesn't induce a ton of confidence in me
1. Mixon needs to be very good. 1,000 yards is 1,000 yards but not always "productive ".
2. LT is same in Tunsil and I hope all pro.

3 RT Howard who turns 28 May 23rd who started 7 games and per link, 389 snaps at OG.
Here's to hoping he will at least be in the mid-70s PFF. Better at pass blocking with this offense, I am cautiously optimistic. Hoping that Fisher can be our Fant behind the starter if needed. In perfect world our starters play all snaps except for rest or we are so far ahead, coach allows them on field. I can say this about every starting position including qb.

RG Mason on paper should be better with a healthy Howard and hopefully a consistent coworker at offensive Center.
Go Scruggs!
Kenyon needs to be the player he was drafted to be or Patterson takes over.

When I clicked on the link it brought up NBC and the Houston Chronicle as links. I clicked on NBC as it was first and it just buffered and I never saw anything. On the Chronicle it was hidden behind a firewall and I could not see it. Thanks again as I now can see the NBC article.

I did try other Google searches and got only Netflix before I posted.

“It’s still the case that every single NFL game will be shown on free, over-the-air broadcast television to the competing teams’ home markets, as it always has been,” Jeff Miller, the league’s EVP of communications for public affairs and policy, said. “We are consistent with that commitment to our local fans. As a matter of fact, even when you consider some of our streaming partners like Netflix or Peacock or Amazon on Thursdays, about 85% of our games are on traditional broadcast television with our partners CBS and Fox. Those games will continue to be seen for free over the air.”

I hope Slowik and Co have been thinking about that too.
With a bit of luck they can come up with a plan and the Oline can be more effective.

ABC13 KTRK usually carries the local feeds. We’ll know sooner closer to the game.

The zone-blocking system requires consistency (and communication) along the offensive line so that each player becomes part of the whole platoon.

The timing and precision of the G/C peeling of the initial double-team to get to the linebacker is very difficult to get right after last years enormous injury wave. It was impossible to start the same five game-to-game.

Looking back at the Texans most successful running game year(s) under Kubiak, the line was nearly healthy the whole year. Add into that Arian Foster in the back field (who was a pure zone runner) and that's when the magic happens.

Loved me some AF...

Tuesday's practice should be the first solid indicator/milestone showing us if Howard is on schedule to return.

With a lot of searching, I couldn't find a date when he had his surgery, but it should have been early in December. So next week should be 4 1/2 - 5 months post surgery. He should be cleared for non contact drills and should be on the field.

If he's not on the field next week, then there should be some concern.

Hopefully we will get the inside information from several of our membership that will actually be at practices and training camp. I always look forward to that info. Shout out all those who do contribute.

Just bought tickets to the Texans at Vikings game through stubhub.

Any of y’all used stubhub for a football game before?

When do I get my damn tickets?

lol

The Netflix games to me is the NFL testing the PPV waters. In ten years or less it may be all PPV. The modern NFL sucks in so many ways. While Goddell is just carrying water for the owners and doing their bidding…it’s no wonder NFL fans boo him. The NFL ownership isn’t listening to fans, nor do they care what fans want. It’s 100% about the greenbacks.

I agree in principle, but not entirely that the NFL isn't listening to fans... it's the most popular sport in the states, merchandise sales are high, viewership is strong, and stadiums are sold out regardless of how much they charge for a terrible hot dog.

Until fans start talking with their money, the NFL (and any other for-profit business (and unfortunately most non-profit businesses)) will continue to find ways to increase their revenue.

True.

But in ten years it may no longer be tackling football.

At that point count me out.

Also - how much PPV stuff can you actually get live on TV? Viewers already get live streams of NFL games they aren’t supposed to.

Howard underwent patellar tendon repair the first week of Dec 2023. The strange "hole" description was a poor description of a partial tendon tendon tear. The indication for surgery is a >50% tear of the tendon. Although you find references of 4 month return to play (for those who return), in fact, it is closer to 6 months with many not being able to effectively perform for 9-12 months. Keep in mind that most tears are a result of a chronic overuse tendinopathy (slow shredding). Prognosis is worse when dealing with athletes with a >25 BMI (Howard 38 BMI).

Out of curiosity, what positions will be the most competitive during training camp and preseason? On offense IMO it's LG and center. Starters elsewhere seem to be solidified, but RT could come into play if Howard isn't healthy enough to start the season. For the defense - tackle, nickel corner, CB2, and SLB seem like those positions will be very competitive.

Not sure if this subject has been discussed elsewhere, otherwise I would have created a new thread.

The 4 months I referenced was not for return to play for a professional athlete. This is for normal return to daily activities for the average person. This is why I specified non contact drills. I agree that after this moderate level of activity and continued rehab, 6 months is the minimum date when he should be cleared for more strenuous workout/contact. And likely will not be at 100% return for a year post surgery, and then may not be at the same level as pre-injury.

I believe we are on the same page. I'm just trying to put a more positive spin on it since everything I've heard in the media suggests to the public that he will be our starting RT on starting day. I'm still doubtful.

Good to see your latest on Howard. Thanks.

Green has slimmed down, is in shape and looking good. Howard is not there, at least today.

Add to my concerns is that Howard is reported to return to RT. With a left patellar tear/repair, the overuse is due to a RT needing to repeatedly forcefully push off with his left knee to protect his outside space.........a perfect setup for continued significant left knee issues.

Thanks. I believe this is new information, at least, I hadn't considered this impact on his ability to effectively play his position.

@ number 19: Note my correction of Howard reported as LT.................I meant RT (corrected in original post).

We're about to find out if Green can play. I'm betting an in shape Green solves the LG issues.

Best thing that ever happened to Green was taking last year off to get healthy, in shape and getting his mind right.
Yes... if he got healthy, in condition and is getting his mind right.

It will take more that slimming down for Green to be viable at LG.

A history of left pectoral tendon rupture and a left shoulder labral tear............................the left arm being repeatedly used to hold a rusher from coming in between the the LG and LT gap.......................the stress that led to each of those injuries.

His 2 right knee meniscus excisions (not repairs) further complicates his return to LG in that the right knee is subjected to large stresses to push off to protect the aforementioned LT-LG gap

You may want to review one of my old posts:

I've been posting on his injuries forever. His knee, his pec and his shoulder. At this point, when you are assessing a player with a history of left pec followed by a left labrum injury, you take into consideration what position they play. An offensive lineman with these injuries is extremely unlikely to be able to conservatively rehab without re-injury and without extending the damage. The team physician is the one that should know that. He, not the player nor the coach or GM are expected to have that knowledge and act upon it. Of course, today with NFL team doctors paying significant monies for the privilege of their position, they too often seem to veer from their ethical duties to the patient/player...........ultimately being influenced in their medical decisions by their business relationship to the team.

At the time of the pec injury last year, there was already associated concern with his labrum. To begin with, the pec injury typically results in weakening of the shoulder to some extent. This was further agravated by being put back at LG using his outstretched left arm to hold back the D (the same mechanism for his pec injury). Surgery was always going to ultimately be necessary for him to practice his trade.

I will take it a step further. I've previously emphasized that Green was never a quick, light on his feet player. Add to that 2 meniscus excisions (not repairs) leaving him well on his way to future microfracture surgery, his ability to move quickly and square off with a defender on his left is definitely even more strongly compromised................with him frequently having to compensate by holding his opponent back with an outstretched arm...........putting all of the weight and leverage of his opponent on his arm............placing him in a perfect position for his arm/shoulder to be torqued backwards resulting in serious shoulder injury.

Whoever participated in the decision for him to rehab then practice/play before addressing his problem surgically was wrong. Saying it was wrong is not a 20/20 hindsight, it should have been a 20/20 foresight.

After reading a bit on these injuries, Green has had plenty of time to rehab. He'll be in the best shape he'll likely ever be, so we'll just have to wait to see how effectively his return to play will be. Hopefully we'll get a couple of good seasons from him. We have Kendrick in the wings if needed, so I'll not let myself be too concerned.

You are putting a lot of hope on Kendrick Green

You are putting a lot of hope on Kendrick Green
I wouldn't say hope, but rather expectation, same as any other young prospect. He was highly regarded coming out of college, played out of position for 2 seasons by Pittsburg, and is moving back to his natural position with the Texans. So yes, I have good reason to have 3rd round expections from him. We'll sèe.

On the good, Kendrick at least underwent meniscus repair instead of excision/trim of his right knee........but still keep in mind that this is the important side for a LG.

Lists. We'll be going through many lists this offseason. Here's one on NFL.com, now.

Rank
7 Houston Texans
2023 record: 10-7

The Texans shocked the NFL with their rapid turnaround last year. They now stand poised to do even more with everyone clearly aware of what they can accomplish. What makes Houston so scary is the same thing that made Kansas City so frightening when Patrick Mahomes exploded on the scene in 2018: The Texans have a young, stud quarterback with endless potential playing on a rookie deal. C.J. Stroud gave the Texans a swagger and a belief that carried them to the AFC South title and a wild-card playoff win last season. Houston then took the next logical step in its evolution by bolstering the cast around Stroud this offseason to give this team a real shot at a championship run. General manager Nick Caserio acquired Stefon Diggs in that trade with Buffalo, adding him to a talented, young group that already included Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Diggs was essential to helping Josh Allen grow into a superstar in Buffalo. Stroud is already becoming that in Houston, and he’ll also benefit from having a versatile runner in Joe Mixon added to the backfield.

On defense, the free-agent signing of edge rusher Danielle Hunter gives Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans another disruptive presence to pair with second-year standout Will Anderson Jr., the 2023 Defensive Rookie of the Year. Hunter has battled injuries in the past, but he’s amassed 27 sacks over the past two seasons. It’s going to be hard to deal with him and Anderson on obvious passing downs. Of course, there will be the obvious questions about how the Texans will fare with more scrutiny and a tougher schedule. The reality is those concerns matter more when talent isn’t a part of a team’s success. The Texans reached new heights in 2023 because they were actually that good. They can go even farther this year if Stroud keeps growing like most people anticipate.
