Texans random thought of the day

So I guess you're saying you would have preferred moving up and taking Bryce Young? Noted.

Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, Donavan McNabb, Jake Plummer, Neil Lomax, Phil Simms, Bob Griese, Joe Namath...all 2nd QBs taken. All outliers. Also, QBs that won Super Bowls like Jeff Hostetler, Trent Dilfer, and Jim McMahon. Which makes them franchise QBs in some people's evaluations.
2nd QB drafted in the top 10

2nd QB drafted in the top 10

Just so everyone's on the same basic page.

2023 - CJ Stroud
2021 - Zach Wilson
2020 - Tua Tagavailoa
2019 - Daniel Jones
2018 - Sam Darnold
2017 - Patrick Mahomes
2016 - Carson Wentz
2015 - Marcus Mariota
2012 - RGIII
2011 - Jake Locker
2009 - Mark Sanchez
2006 - Matt Leinart
2004 - Philip Rivers
2003 - Byron Leftwich
2002 - Joey Harrington

How about
  • 2nd QB taken
  • in the top 10
  • from Ohio State
  • drafted before the #3 Overall who was drafted by the same team.

How's that list look?

Oh, so the bad QB mojo exits after the 10th pick filter. Except when it doesn't (Mahomes, Rivers, Griese, Namath). Let's add more filters. There has never been to date a QB taken 2nd within the top 10 that was a Libra born on a Wednesday that became a franchise QB.

Not until the 2023 draft, anyway.

There has never been a drafted QB by the Texans that has ever amounted to much, no matter where they were picked. Including the therapist molester.

I have a feeling they were waiting for Mahomes and got beaten to the punch - the knee jerk trade up for the next best is my only reasoning.
They may have even tried a trade for Mahomes but got nixed.

The data speaks for itself.

Mahomes and Rivers being the exceptions (outlier), this is an average to below-average list. You forgot Blake Bortles 2014. Odds on being the 2nd QB drafted in the Top 10 becoming a solid above-average franchise QB are not really good.

The lesson to be learned is the Texans should trade for a QB. The draft and free agency are not in their wheelhouse.

Rick Smith had a hard-on for Watson. Smith's mind about Watson was made up after Rick attended the National Championship game.

Like hiring Ryans, the Texans are overdue on good QB mojo. No energy vampires (like Texian) allowed.

The Texans have always been a backwards organization. I'm hopeful, like you said, that DeMeco changes all that. If he doesn't, we're back to the same ole crap.

As the great philosopher Tom Cruise said in Risky Business, sometimes you got to say what the %@#&. Make your move.

I have a sense that Stroud is going to become your Bortles. I stand corrected about Bortles draft position.
Stroud has come to a better situation than Bortles.
Stroud may have some bumps in the road like most rookies (see Trevor Lawrence and Daniel Jones most recently) but I think he will be okay - maybe not top 5 but top ten.
Just need to keep building around him now.

Somebody's nerve got lost.

RS got beat to the punch, just like he got beat to the punch with Jimmy G, Lockett etc.... It was a Texans tradition.

The success or not of 2nd QB's taken is not a true pre-determinant in anything that may or may not happen in the future.
It's like saying that since the Texans have never taken a (name your position) in the first round, they never will.
You know, the Bengals haven't beaten the Steelers on the road since they started cutting their grass horizontally.
Those points being used as certainties are pretty amusing though.

It's not like Stroud didn't have 1st and 2nd rd draft picks blocking for him at OT at OSU.

Yes there's a process, Hannah goes to Janice and tells her that she wants to draft Stroud and that the football people are against this. Janice sides with Hannah and the rest is history.
Hannah may be playing the Atlantic City and Vegas odds that Stroud will be better than good.

But, but, we are the Outliers!

She’s football people.

Can you provide a link proving she’s not?
Look up her business background and show me what in her past makes her qualified? She has a marketing background. Of course I guess you could say she's earned the right by sleeping with Cal. (Shudder)
