Texans random thought of the day

EJ Perry claimed off waivers by Jags. I remember the Texans being interested in him during last draft. He’s a good athlete. Had over 700 yards rushing one season in college and runs 4.65 40.

Could be good insight into what “type” of QB they want. A QB who can be a dual threat? I remember DeMeco saying that he likes dual threat QBs because they “unlock” a defense.

Mills ran a good 40.

He ain't no dual threat

I wonder how good Lamar Jackson would look in the WCO.

2 1sts and a really weighty contract and he’s ours, don’t know what the wiggle room is around which 2 firsts that is, but I’d be very interested in trading back to get more future picks and still having the ammo to build out the team around him.

Top QB, better pressure on the defensive front 7, and this team would look so much better, could potentially win the division next season and be a genuine contender the following year.

Does claiming him off waivers affect anything? Like do we still get to stay second in waiver wire claims?

And this could potentially effect future compensation on draft picks when comparing the players that leave in free agency and the players picked up right?

Still 2nd on waiver wire. Does not count as a qualifying free agent.

To your 1st question, the answer is no effect...players picked up on waivers or released do not qualify as compensatory free agents.
To your 2nd question, waiver priority status of teams go into effect the day after the Super Bowl and is ranked by "Worst to First". It remains that way through the end of week 3 of the regular season (no matter how many times a team puts in a claim). After week 3 of the season, the priority is based on the reverse order of the current standings (again Worst to First).

Thank you for the education.

Ridiculous the team would lose a 5th round pick over a 26k accounting discrepancy. Fine them cash sure, even charge it as dead cap this season if you want, but a draft pick is steep for something this minimal.

The salary cap is God in the NFL. It's how they manage their parity. Carry a big stick and protect at all cost.

Who the hell are they signing for 26k? They got slapped with losing a draft pick, because the discrepancy involved D. rapist and the hotel membership. F Watson.

Reading about the M.J. Stewart re-signing reminded me of an article I read earlier last season on him and a comment Frank Ross made:

"Running the personal protector position, that guy is your quarterback," Ross said. "He has done an outstanding job of the work. What's so fascinating about a guy who's already established himself as a pro, he's had a reset. He comes back, 'hey, what do I've got to do this week to improve or prep for the Chargers in this case.' Fired up with the way he has executed and played. He's been an impact force on the field with production standard, from a production standpoint."

And any time I want to be a football nerd, I google Bill Belichik special teams and I learn something new. Here is a nice read on the personal protector position from the GOAT coach:

"Yeah, that's one of the toughest spots to play. It doesn't come up every play. I'm not saying it's - it's kind of like playing quarterback, but you play quarterback for, call it 60 plays a game, 70 plays a game. You only punt five to 10 times, let's call it - somewhere in there. But, there's a lot of different variables. You know, if it's eight-on-eight, then it's getting the right eight-on-eight. Now, if you split your gunners out and a guy comes in from the outside, now they have nine-on-eight, and that creates some problems. You also want to try to be able to maximize your coverage, so let's say there's only six guys rushing and you have eight blockers, right - seven plus the personal protector. If you can block those six with six and then have two free guys going to the ball, particularly if it's the two guys that are your best coverage players or two of your best coverage players, there's some strategy there, too. So, identifying the rush, identifying the return - sometimes you can tell what the return is based on the way they align - or if there's a double team on the gunner or not a double team on the gunner, a lot of times the wind plays into that. Sometimes the situation plays into it. Teams that like field returns are bound to return in certain situations, or middle returns in certain situations, like plus-50, things like that. So, there are a lot of variables there, but a good personal protector takes all those into consideration, just like a quarterback does, and A, protect the punter, B, he's the last line of defense. So, a lot of times, even if your protection is not right on the front, if that guy gets the right guy and does the right thing, you still could possibly save a blocked punt by just him doing the right thing, even though somebody else has made a mistake in the front of it. So, that decision making is a key part of it there, and the whole cadence and communication between the snapper, the punter and the gunners if we directional punt - if we're trying to punt the ball one way or the other, making sure that everybody knows where that is and if it changes, which sometimes it does based on the look that they give you. So, there's a lot of different things that go in there. It's not an easy job at all if you want to do it right and get the most out of it. So, we've had a number of guys do that - Pat's done it for us, Jordan's [Richards] done it for us, obviously Nate did a great job of it. Those guys all meet together and work together, just like the quarterbacks do. They all learn the same things so that they all understand what the options are, and what's a good option against one team might be a bad option against another team. It frequently is. We wouldn't always necessarily do it by the book. It would depend on what the look was and who the people are on the other side of the ball, who we're facing. So, the plus-50 punting game where they leave their defense on the field and don't put a punt return team out there, that creates a whole other set of problems that you have to deal with on the punt team. The size and the type of player that's rushing is a lot different than, a lot of times, the player that's on the punt return team and the rushers they would use would be different. So, that creates another element of it, too. A lot goes into that position. It's a tough position to play, as I said. I'm not trying to say it's like playing quarterback. You don't do it 70 times a game, but the times you do it, it could be a team like Buffalo that gives you some different looks, Miami that gives you a lot of different looks. It's challenging."

I read today that Jackson is looking for 5 years 250 million guaranteed.

The ghosts of Bill O'Brien and Jack Easterby are still alive and well roaming NRG stadium. BOO!
The child of Bill and Jack, Nick Caserio, has an office and is still walking the corridors.

You know man he is from them totally.

But I’m not seeing any evidence that he operates anything like those scumbags.

I’ll be watching closely though.

The Texans are planning to cut LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin after giving him a two-year, $7.5MM contract with $5MM guaranteed. They will eat $2MM in dead money.

Random thought. What on earth made them give that JAG $5MM guaranteed? Paging @Texian. :kitten:

HA HA, just another case of letting the File Clerk write contracts and manage the salary cap. Pure and Simple, the File Clerk has a spending problem. This is his mindset and MO.

Watch a little closer. On a couple of occasions I've posted several pages of FUBARS, SNAFUs, and Spending Problems. Case and Point, the Texans have $41MM in salary cap space. The Texans would have almost as much as the Bears $95MM if it were not for the File Clerk's renegotiated Cooks and Tunsil contracts.

Nick Cliche needs to add new cliches to his lexicon, "We need to do a much better job of thinking things through", "We need to expand our horizons from a one-year outlook to a four-year outlook".

Baltimore had plenty of time, before the Watson contract and didn't get it done.
No way would I sign him to a fully guaranteed contract.
Read an article today that said Baltimore had offered more than 40 million annually. In my opinion it's
about each player wanting to be the next highest paid at his position. Jackson is talented but there's just something off about him.

I was listening today to some interesting stuff about the technicalities of guaranteed money and how it has to be held in escrow, so if I own a franchise and want to give Lamar $250million guaranteed I need to have all of the money available as cash to pay immediately on signing. Not all the owners are in that position and it is beginning to narrow the market for QBs wanting fully guaranteed contract and there is a concern going forward that it may be affecting the parity of the salary cap now that the numbers are getting so huge.

I guess not all billionaires are created equal.
