Texans random thought of the day

The Texans have been successful all season with gunners getting down field, they switch it up for some reason.

Texans doing it again with special teams. Some odd formation with the gunners, James on the outside and Moore on the inside. Result: TD.

Seth Payne discussed earlier that he had a conversation with someone that had been to the Vikes game and they were struck by how quiet and flat the Texans were prior to the game compared with the Vikes. The conversation led to a discussion about lack of leadership on the team and I started to think through the personalities on the team with jj out. Cush was the only one I could think of that seemed to be a vocal leader and maybe KJ in the making. It hit me that it seems like we've got more lead by example 'quiet guys' than most teams. JJo, KJack, Mercilus, JD, Lamar, Fuller, DHop and I would put Os in this category as well (maybe vocal in a nerdy kind of way but not fiery). Seems like this could be a factor as to why we get off to slow starts and seem intimidated against big opponents.

Could be. I think it's a confidence issue. Most of our guys may not be all that confident in themselves, some not very confident in the guy next to him, fewer have confidence in the guy behind them.

Kjohnson looks like a confident guy. Cush is pretty confident. Merciless, Vince, Clowney all confident guys. Everyone else has that, Don't throw the ball my way." look about them... Nuk looks confident.

But most of them are worried about screwing up. So they play tight, think through every action, every motion.

I agree with this. I'm most concerned w/ Os' confidence right now and I have said in other places that play calling needs to account for this early in games to get him into a rhythm and I think we'll see a different qb. I think the denver game will determine whether or not we can do anything in the playoffs. If BOB can get Os rolling in that game with the nation watching -- he can build some confidence that can carry into the rest of the season and hopefully a playoff run (even if we lose the game but he plays well). I'm concerned that it goes the other way and plays like he has vs NE and MN because of a combination of poor play and poor play selection -- Brock will be the talk of the country in sports on Tuesday morning and I'm not sure we'll be able to get him on track against any remaining good teams.

Regarding personalities though, I do believe that a fiery leader (coach or player) can help a team to not come out flat. So much of the game is momentum and slow starts are difficult to overcome.

After the stink of these two whoopings, it was time for another avatar change. The OB Pepe one wasn't cutting it. Had to make a change. Not that anyone cares. At this rate I'll be back to the crying pepe meme again in a few weeks.

For play action to be effective doesn't the running game have to be considered a serious threat?

Depends. Sometimes, all you need is a second. A lapse in focus.

Remember that TD play to Thielen? Johnathan Joseph had him where he needed him. He expected a quick inside cut & when he saw Thielen break in, he bit on it. He saw the QB winding up & jumped. Next thing you know, Thielen is behind him with the ball, running for the end zone.

Same thing with the play action. If you're playing a team that you know is going to hand it off a lot, regardless, when you see that action you may find yourself out of position. If that WR you're guarding is fast, you may not see him again until he's doing his TD dance.

Now, if you've got a dynamic run game, that same play fake will cause DBs & LBs to totally abandon their responsibility.

I don't know how our defense turned things around this time last year, after starting as poorly as our offense has this year. But they did.

Last year we were "behind" in our preparation, most likely due to all the Hardknocks hubbub. This year, I don't know of a good reason/excuse, but they definitely look to be ill prepared, more so than they appear to lack talent. That's not to say the OL is loaded with talent, but I believe there is enough there to work with. Most likely won't ever look good against above average pass rushes, but should be able to hold their own against avg pass rushes & we'll see more average defenses than top 10 the rest of the way.

But it's time for this coaching staff to once again buckle down & get it together

All the "FAST" on the offense rhymes with LAST.

Denver currently has 4 wins. IMO, we'll lose this game. Both Indy and Detroit have 2 wins. These games will be toss ups. If we lose one of these, we're underperforming but will still be at 4-4 at mid season. The Texans likely stick with Oz. If we lose both games, we need a shake up at QB.

It's not so much as who we lost to, it's how we looked in those games. Even the wins haven't been pretty

I agree.

I'm just as upset & disappointed about the way we played in those games as anyone.

I would understand more anger directed at this "mature" defense that laid down for those teams, giving up 27 points to a rookie 3rd string QB & 24 points Sam Bradford & that Theilen guy.

I don't understand being upset about our offense looking bad against what many here believe to be the #2 defense in the league if not #1. Outside of those two games, the offense appears to be making progress.

So you're saying we're in trouble if we have to play a good team?

I'm saying this offense is a work in progress. We're not very good now. There is reason to believe we'll get better as the season progresses. I doubt we'll look as bad later in the season. When we play Green Bay, or if we get into the play offs I expect our offense to be much better.

Indy's hasn't been able to generate a pass rush. We'll see how our OL does. With no pressure on Osweiler, I expect us to be able to move the ball & score some points.

Detroit... they're right there with the top 10 teams as far as sacks go. I imagine hurries, pressures, & hits are also in order. It's likely our offense won't do well. Unless we get a lot of turnovers, we may not win.

I don't know, maybe because football is overlapping with a presidential election, but I'm just not optimistic or positive about the season. I'm usually more positive, but this team has been a major disappointment. As someone else said, it's not the loses, it's the way we lost and the wins haven't been pretty, either.

By all accounts, I agree Indy should be a win. This game, Sunday night national audience, is a defining game for the organization. If we stink this game up and lose........

It really is amazing how this team the amount of optimism we had for them before the season started. It was looking like an O'b can't do no wrong season... until the season started & has been dropping like a rock since.

Maybe that's because we appreciate the personnel moves Smith makes, then OB can't coach said talent.

I still think this is one of our best rosters, it may just be in the hands of our worst coach.

In the O'Brien era;

Texans against teams with winning records: 4-12
Texans against teams with losing records: 15-2
It's like Double Barrel and I've noted: The Texans are good enough to beat bad teams and bad enough to lose to good teams (been that way for awhile).

Reading The Players Tribune. This time it was Broncos' Chris Harris Jr talk about...

The 5 Toughest Receivers I’ve Ever Covered
http://www.theplayerstribune.com/top-5-nfl-receivers-chris-harris-jr/
DeAndre Hopkins
Oh, man. DeAndre is a different beast. Antonio and T.Y. are going to create that half yard of separation to make a clean grab on you. But DeAndre is a guy who can turn a 50-50 jump ball into a 70-30 ball.

He’s able to make those leaping catching over DBs along the sideline and still get his feet down inbounds. Everybody talks about his athleticism, but watch his feet. You still have to come down with it inbounds, and DeAndre’s footwork is phenomenal.

Against DeAndre, you have to be ready to play the ball in the air at its highest point. This is why you need a good vertical jump as a corner. Shoot, in the offseason we spend entire days just defending jump balls. In terms of spectacular catches, I’d put Hopkins right up there with Odell right now. He does things on the field that make you say, “Wow!”

When the Texans have the ball in the red zone, you know there’s a very good chance you’re going to see a jump ball to the corner of the end zone. Stopping it is another story. In real time, Hopkins makes the 50-50 ball look easy. But watch him in slo-mo here. Keep an eye on the ball as he goes up and gets it at the highest point.

The 5 in case you're wondering:
Gronk, Anotnio Brown, TY Hilton, Nuk, AJ Green

Pretty decent read. Has gifs, seems very forthcoming with what he sees and studies.
