The new playing surface inside NRG Stadium has its first supporter: D.J. Swearinger.
Swearinger, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after spending his first two seasons playing on the field when it was laid using the old grass paneling system, said after the Houston Texans’ 19-9 win that he enjoyed the artificial field that debuted today.
“I liked the field,” he said. “The field, it’s nice turf. I felt like it was a nice playing field. It was definitely way better than last year, for sure.”
Swearinger brought national attention to the condition of the field last season, when he told Albert Breer of the NFL Network that 2014 top overall pick Jadeveon Clowney confided in Swearinger that Clowney had suffered a knee injury stepping in a hole in the field.
“He told me on the field when it happened, he was just like, ‘Bro, I just jumped, came down and hit one of the holes on the field,’”
Swearinger said. “There are a few holes in the grass, so he said he thought he stepped on one of those holes and got hurt. So I told him to try and walk it off, see if he could go. He went in the next play and couldn’t go, so I told him to go to the sideline and see what’s up with it. And he went over to the sideline, and I guess that’s when they told him (he had to stay out).”
