Due her pettiness she has caused a great spike in sales, I think people actually like the accent of blue with the uniform more so than a primary color, which is what it was going to be.

Recovering from BO'B PTSD
Thought I'd share a funny story. For my Dad's Christmas present, I decided to get him a 'replica' Stroud jersey. But when it was time to go to the store, I had come down with a nasty case of RSV so I sent my wife to the store with some instructions. She gets back with the jersey and says she was surprised by the price, and that they had led her to jerseys that were each in a glass case. I immediately new what had happened, but figured I owed my Dad so we kept the 'real' deal and I gave it to him. I'm actually glad that the uniform's changed as that makes his jersey a true rookie jersey from here on out.
I totally agree with this. When the NFL puts a city's name on a franchise, that city and it's institutions also have ownership. Now, maybe UH owes the NFL some % of sales. But the NFL shouldn't be able to ban a part of a city's history.
Cal earned a bad rap, and not just for one story.
Dude hired Jack Easterby and gave him too much power, made Bill O'Brien GM, fired O'Brien four games into the next season, hired Culley for a year, and hired Lovie Smith for one season.
Those are clear signs of crappy ownership.
Fortunately he married up and had the brains to trust her instincts.
But he earned the bad rap that he's slowly digging out of now with her help.
And it's been reported that Cal had an alcohol problem and is in recovery. So, he had to his stuff together, all the while dealing with his father's death and his new responsibilities. Cal is now in a better place and, uncoincidentally, so are the Texans.

I like to think Cal was drunk during most of those decisions.

Ehh, u and I have butted heads & disagreed over that time period in previous threads over the years. All I’m going to say is that you could argue that the Texans’ persistence in pursuing Nick Caserio for years before he actually landed here was the single most important decision the franchise made to get us to where we are now. Everything we are now comes off of that decision As he has been masterful in both handling the cap, getting us out of the DW4 fiasco in a winning way and setting us up in the draft and FA. to And whether fans wanna acknowledge that or not, that’s THE feather in Cal’s cap as he……. and to a lesser extent Easterby were central in getting him here…..That’s just a fact.
& No matter how simple fans and the media here wanna make it out to be, the reality is no serious candidate for HC was gonna take this job as long as the DW4 thing was unresolved…that’s how a guy like Culley and later Smith wind up with the HC gig here…& Hannah was apart of those decisions…where was all this championing of her then?
Things are just never as simple as fans think they are. Cal like all owners made some mistakes, but IMO the other things going on out of his control were much more damaging and the cause for why this team spun outta control for those few years.
I'm going to say it was the DeMeco hiring. And I credit DeMeco with wanting to be here. "This is my dream job. Let's find a way to make this happen." Since then, nothing but good karma. No energy vampires. All gas. No brakes.

And u can say that about Demeco, but if it was his dream job in 2023, it was his dream job in 2021 and 2022 as well. And I’m pretty damn sure if he’d expressed interest in those years, Cal and NC would’ve hired him over Culley and Smith then. Bottom line is he like a lot of the top candidates wanted nothing to do with this franchise as long as the DW4 thing was unresolved. Only after that were the Texans going to be seriously considered by the top candidates.

Getting rid of all the toxic waste, starting with O’Brien, Easterby and Watson helped this franchise out tremendously. I credit Quick Nick for keeping Cal at bay ( kept him out the media while he clean up all the crap. And for staying patient and getting the very best out of that Watson situation. That’s including waiting to pull the trigger on the right head coach.
I see why New England blocked us for the longest from getting him.
Not yet. I went there the other day just to see for myself. The one off of 290 and 34th hardly had any Texans apparel. Might have changed but I think large quantities of merchandise should hit by the end of the month. Nothing on their website shows the H just yet.

I've said this from day 1 when people used that insult.. Did they watch the movie? Casserio negotiated the deal, but the Watson trade is where we stuck Cleveland with 500,000 brake pads (except they don't work) and we saved the town (football team)

As many reasons as I've heard for the Columbia Blue color needing to be kept, it's origin support being a city of Houston government color is probably the most disingenuous.
Bud Adams specifically chose the color simply, and for no other reason, on the basis that it was his alma mater's football color.

I’ve heard the city of Houston government color argument, and I think alot of Houstonians identify with the street numbers in blue which started way before the Oilers. I feel that would make more sense than the flag color argument which people paid no attention to. Those tile street numbers are preserved in a lot of places.

We don’t live in Houston however we have always been a Houston sports fan. Astros, Rockets and Texans Toro is something all Texans can love however the H Town applies to fans living in H Town. I feel like the San Antonio area might feel a bit odd wearing an H Town jersey. We all understand what H Town is but this could be a marketing error outside of Houston.

The choice of the Houston Oilers Columbia blue color was strictly a choice of Bud Adams, having nothing to do with anything Houston.
The merchandise is being purchased by folks in and out of town.
True. That’s not why the color is resonating with people who have never saw the Oilers play though. Sure it does with old Oilers fans, however you have demographics who have never been associated with the Oilers, who claim it as a representation of Houston culture, regardless of having anything to do with Bud Adams.

Just my opinion, but I don't think anyone (or at least most people) are arguing why Bud Adams picked the color he did.
But the argument for the Texans using a similar color IS because of its association with Houston, not the association with the Oilers specifically.
The side benefit is that it irritates the Adams/Titans fans.

Yep there’s a whole project underway to preserve those tiles..and those things go back well before Bud Adams and the Oilers. Hell the city flag was adopted well before Adam’s and the Oilers…so no, it’s not disingenuous.

Yep. No one is debating the reason why Bud chose the colors. The issue is those saying the colors were never a part of Houston, which is not true. While it may not be the same shade of Colombia blue, it is closer to the Htown blue current. There is legal basis for the Texans to have added this current color. It is a shade darker.

As someone from San Antonio, I can attest to this. I could have cared less about the Oilers growing up.
So? The colors of the Oilers were that shade of blue, and they played in the city of Houston. Thus, this does have something to do with Houston.

This color argument has always bothered me. When I lived in the Woodlands TWHS was sued by Wisconsin for using their “W” font style on their helmets. It was the style, not their similar red color of the W that was at fault (their uniforms are red and green and white). I can see that. These have a high degree of uniqueness and can be considered intellectual property. But it’s not like the Texans wanted a derrick on their helmet. So color shades are intellectual property? Is that color patented?
This is where I think Amy Strunk lost her argument. She wanted the Texans to not be able to use any shade of blue that was similar and she didn’t have the legal basis for that.

Yeah I agree. Shades can differ so minutely that there is probably hundreds of variants within a small range of “light blue”. Just go look at a Sherwin Williams paint can where they display the component composition of the paint so that you can get a new can of the exact paint if you run out. It would be ridiculously easy to have a seemingly exact looking color but with a different mix of components so her case could only be stated that it “looks” the same.
Right. Now by taking this approach the Texans will be able to eventually expand the color if they want. I think it looks nice as is, and seems to be the top selling merchandise. You’re going to see all kinds of combinations, red jacket with the blue H and blue jacket inseams on the zippers. Just a whole lot of things you can do with it as an accent that people will buy and keep buying. Going to look much better than anything out of Tennessee.

Look, we know why Adams-Strunk tried to block it and is being petty. she knows how much money she reels in off those Oilers unis from fans in Houston. Having something even remotely close with that color in it in Houston would dent her pockets here. All u have to do is look at the response here in Houston that the cougars got when they rolled out their alternates last year. She felt she had to block a damn college team from it being popular here b/c it would render those old Oilers unis obsolete.
Tennessee fans are so desperate to have some sort of something NFL related that they really can’t understand it all. “No its our history!!!” Yeah u “own” it, but noone’s thinking of y’all when they see those unis lol.

I know we all know this but it is worth saying again that Hannah and Cal are great in public together. Hannah takes the shots fired and shoots them back and Cal gets to look classy with the “typical ownership” answers.
I don’t know any ownership that has that youthful and fun vibe to it.
Absolutely. Having all stores in the Houston area take down the Oilers apparel in Houston was also a good move.
