Texans @ Jets AAR

This game was there for the taking. We knew it would be tough on a short week with all the injuries but it still stings. Totally winnable game tonight. 6-3 with the Lions coming to town next week…

What went well:

1) Tank and Mixon:
Nice to see Tank make some big plays. Mixon is on a heck of a run this season.

2) First half defense: Rodgers had his lowest yards of his career in the first half and the defense was suffocating. Then…

What did not go well:

1) Second half adjustments:
Nonexistent.

2) Pass blocking: Nonexistent.

3) CJ’s accuracy: We understand why but it was frustrating he could not put his cape on tonight and make magic happen. Off target when he had time to get the ball off more often than not.

4) Kaimi: Missing a 27 yarder?! I never thought Kaimi would end up on this side of the AAR this season :(

Im disappointed. Not mad.

I don’t know who to blame for Kenyon starting week after week. Slowik or Demeco?
Clearly a coaching issue there.

First 2 possessions, Kenyon allowed multiple hits/sacks on Cj. It took him to get injured to get out the game. Next drive without him, we score…

Mentioned earlier, at the time Cj was the best 3rd down qb, what he was doing was special. I knew losses like this would happen where Cj isn’t Superman and saves the day for this incompetent offense.

I look at this lost as a positive. Hopefully it motivates our spectacular gm to make a trade for a solid line man and receiver.

I just don’t understand the logic. You drafted a guy who benched the lowest reps in the combine and you expect him to block the strongest defender on defense? It doesn’t make sense.

Another game where Slowik 2nd half offense has been garbage. Last 3 games in the 2nd half, the offense has only mustard up 15 points. Tells me Slowik isn’t making adjustments. Cj is not to blame

I’m not even mad.. this was a game I just knew they’d lose and I can’t explain why.

The playcalling needs an overhaul

Kendrick Green acquitted himself well. We should have seen the last of Kenyon.

CJ has to stop holding the ball so long. A lot of these sacks are on him. Get rid of it and trust your playmakers to make plays for you.

I also think this game proves that our WR depth needs to be addressed. CJ has no rythym with Metchie. Both Hutch and Metchie are also just too slow.

Mixon is a man. Period.

coaching. Sucks arse.
Defense was no show second half
Slowick is scared and doesn’t know how to design quick hit pass plays
Oline continues to be garbage
How do you let a defense have a bad coverage safety one on one with Davonte Adams for crap sake!?!?
Call time out and get a better d called
The phantom hold on Stingley was complete garbage 🗑️ and changed the entire game

What offense are we running? It looks like Jr High
There's no rhyme or reason to it.. nothing being called to set up another play.. it's like he has a rolodex of plays and is just spinning a wheel.. there's no vision in his play calling. We were dominant in the run game tonight, he should've been able to develop a passing attack off of that running performance where the QB doesn't get sacked 8 times.

If I was Caleb Williams I'd troll post Stroud right now on X telling him "you can't take hits like that bro".

The Texans are now:
points for - 201
points against - 200

That one point difference feels more accurate than the 6-3 record. They have looked like an unmotivated, uninspired, unprepared, and overrated football team most of this season.
It's not just this season.. we rode a razors edge last year as well.. it's becoming a identity of DeMeco's teams. We were also one of the most penalized teams last season as well.

1…Slowick’s play-calling was no good.
2…OL was the usual suspect(s) in another piss-poor offensive performance.
3…Defense was on their game in the 1st half, very difficult to understand how poorly the 2nd half went.
4…Bear can’t afford to miss FG’s like he did tonight.
5…Does anyone care to imagine what Mixon could be doing behind a competent OL?
6…Nice to see Dell have a game like this. He could’ve done more except for some stray passes.
7…I don’t think Slowick called Metchie’s number enough. I believe Metchie is ready to be part of this offense.
8…I’m getting very concerned with CJ’s happy feet. He has very good reason to have happy feet, so Caserio, Ryans, and Slowick need to get the OL fixed or figured out soon.

Agreed they need to make a trade for a og or c and a wr. I might even trade for Pocic from the Browns and move Scruggs to LG. I thought considering the circumstances I thought Kendrick played well tonight.

Stroud had Metchie open for a TD and missed him. That's happened more than once in the second half of a few games so those numbers are skewed. He missed a pass to Dell in the first half and they ended up having to settle for a FG, so yes some of this is on Stroud. But I'm thinking after the beating Stroud's been taking he's not as accurate or making as quick of decisions as he was making last year.

Despite all of this I'm thinking things will get better after Nico gets back and they get Stroud some protection. He could use another speedy wr also

We learned how much the defense missed WA in the 2nd half.

We are destroying our QB.
We have coaching failures a-plenty.
We have a porous o-line.
We have an on again / off again kind of defense.

Most importantly, Slowick is NOT a good playcaller. No adjustments. No imagination. No guts. You can see it in Strouds eyes, he does NOT agree with the plays being ran.

No imagination.. He was psychedelic on that 2nd down call at the goal line.

When they get Nico back the offense will look a lot better. Still need to add another wr and an oil. You can't lose the best wr in the NFL and it not affect your offense and then to lose Diggs too, the game turned out about like I expected. Man they miss WA.

I can't believe they had to play on that crappy MetLife turf two years in a row.

I hate that Texans fans got to experience the Stingley holding calls. Just another example of how the refs, NFL rig games for Vegas.

Right on the money. You predicted a loss today. I thought a trade was long overdue before Diggs injury. Seems like the reason we weren’t trading is because we kept winning. Kind of glad we lost. Nicos impact has truly been missed. Not only a great catching receiver but also one of the best blocking receivers in the Nfl. It will be interesting to see what Nick does. Who do you think they should target? I don’t believe he’s giving up 1st and 2nd round draft capital. I would keep an eye on Darius Slayton, Chris Olave and Tee Higgins if their teams lose this Sunday.

Yeah far as the game man, Cj hasn’t looked like himself due to multiple reasons. No one’s been consistent in this offense besides Nico and Mixon. Overall, it’s a learning experience for Cj. Seems like he didn’t trust his receivers outside of Tank this game. I’m not worried about his mental. He seems very ambitious about being the best player he can be. I still think this offense will click at the right time. The season will play out how it should

Hutchinson and Metchie put up big fat 0-0 on 3 & 2 targets each, right when we needed them to step up.

Slowick’s O has no answers once the field gets short in the red zone.

Kenyon Green starting was incompetent from the coaching staff, he’s the 5th best LG on this team, which is nuts, but Patterson, Juice, Kendrick and Tytus are all better than him by streets, and for Juice and Tytus, the replacement at the position they vacate would be better than having Kenyon at LG, too. They had all spring/summer to figure that out.

Holding call on Stingley was disgusting, a real sucker punch.

I like that CJ Stroud is taking responsibility in his media session, I don’t think it’s as much on him as he states, I think his play needs to be held to account once there isn’t constant pressure coming from all angles and some receivers are demonstrably where they are meant to be, but similar to how I never want to hear a coach criticise the players (save that for behind closed doors), its a good trait that a QB protects his team, too, and lots of young men in CJs position might not have that awareness at his age.

The take home factor, Slowick has some serious thinking to do during this mini-bye, get Stroud some one to hit quick when the pocket is collapsing, you had that most of last year so why have we gone away from it this year. Keep it simple, stupid.

Oh and btw how much fun is Mixon to watch!? When he actively hits the defender and bounces for extra yardage it’s great to see. Deserves better from the team around him.

Biggest surprise to me was the defensive meltdown in the second half. Three Jets drives all 70+ yard td drives.

The OL was equally pathetic from the first half to the second. Defense was not tired, Texans had dominated TOP in the first half with Jets unable to get anything going.

I think Will Anderson was just too big of a loss for this defense to take. And the momentum swinging holding call on Stingley that should’ve been a turnover on downs. But the Jets had their own poor calls go against them as well along with self-inflicted wounds (Dropping ball at 1, running into the punter AND long snapper).

How did the Texans lose a game the Jets actively tried to give away?!

“The biggest problem, however, was on defense. That unit was in Rodgers’ head early, holding the Jets to 69 first-half yards, but their battered unit drove 70, 70 and 80 yards for touchdowns in their only three possessions of the second half. Rodgers was sacked twice in the first half, but he had a brilliant second half, completing 15 of 18 passes for 179 yards and three TDs“

I was traveling and missed most of the game. Did they call any max protects to help CJ?

I did catch the goal line pass to CJ. When did BOB start calling the offense again?

The money line had the Jets as 2.5 point favorites. Vegas got nervous and made a call, and then 4th down stingley gets hit with a BS call and that is game. Doesn't help that ole Bobby is the most boring uncreative predictable play caller I have ever seen.... Can we get Gary Kubiak to come be our OC? I would love to see what that many could do with Stroud, Mixon and Nico!

The Stingley call was bad but that’s not what lost the game. The Jets gave them every opportunity to win with their bad decisions.

How many teams have won a game where they drop the ball at the 1 yard line AND have two ST personal foul penalties extend drives? Only on Thursday Night Football!

Slayton is the guy I would be looking at. He probably would cost a 5th that can turn into a 4rh. If he's in the last year of his contract it will cost even less.

Texans are in a dangerous situation. I’m worried about Cj regressing due to the hits he’s taking. Also the stroud fade route after taken all those hits was ******* stupid

Cj will be fine. Obviously this can't continue, but he has insanely good mechanics that aren't going to miraculously break down.

You have to fire whoever is responsible for the offensive line and their coaching.

Its a coaching issue through and through. Why you ask? Because a lot of these same players are struggling with things they have been good at before.

Is it Slowik? Is it Strausser?

Why is Kenyon Green in the game to even begin with? We saw what he has done the last few weeks.

Allowing it to happen again this game.... after telling Aaron Wilson it was considered(his benching).

That is malpractice.

I hate it when fan bases can see the bullshit before the coaches realize it internally. Its annoying that Houstonian's with 9-5 and probably at most a varsity level football career can identify whats best for their team before professionals can.

I have my doubts Demeco has anything to do with the offense. I do not want Slowik back though. I think Stroud put on some rose colored drunk goggles over Slowik's actual offense last year. Something just good enough to take the edge off the prior funk we had to endure with the BOB led offenses. Stroud is the offense. Protect him.

1…Slowick’s play-calling was no good
I’m going to be the last one to pile on the play calling, but the play calling makes no sense. Your OL sucks, you’re down your top 2 WRs, and you open the game with 6 straight passes?? WTF??

And the cute plays in the red zone … enough already. They’ve been doing that all season and none of them have worked except the Diggs TD run, and even that was a play that busted. Diggs was just able to turn it into something.
2…OL was the usual suspect(s) in another piss-poor offensive performance.

How they ever thought Kenyon Green was an NFL starter really makes me question their talent evaluation. He’s not the only problem on the OL but dude shouldn’t be on an NFL roster.
3…Defense was on their game in the 1st half, very difficult to understand how poorly the 2nd half went.

It looked a lot different without WAJ that’s for sure, and that’s a concern. And I guess it doesn’t help when you have Pitre covering Devante freaking Adams. What the hell was that? Let’s not start OBing this thing by not putting players in the best position to succeed.
4…Bear can’t afford to miss FG’s like he did tonight.

John Christian has been the MVP so far this season. Not piling on him for a bad game when the whole damn team not wearing the number 28 had a bad game.
6…Nice to see Dell have a game like this. He could’ve done more except for some stray passes.

Dell hasn’t been the same player this season. He did finally have an explosive play but that was a regular thing last year. Not so much this year.
7…I don’t think Slowick called Metchie’s number enough. I believe Metchie is ready to be part of this offense.

I’m not sold on Metchie but I thought this was a big chance for Hutch to step up. 0 for 3.
8…I’m getting very concerned with CJ’s happy feet. He has very good reason to have happy feet, so Caserio, Ryans, and Slowick need to get the OL fixed or figured out soon.

I hope, hope, hope he’s not getting Carr’d.
_____________________________

Other things I want to add, 15 of 31 targets went to Tank and Schultz. They also had 9 of the 11 receptions. Woods had the other 2. That’s it.

And as good as Mixon has been, and yes I know you can’t have him having a mega workload every game, but not utilizing him at all in the pass game? C’mon man! That makes no sense.

I hate blame it on ref guy but that was a horrible call on Stingley that cost them a turnover. Just horrible. But refereeing in all sports has just gotten way out of hand lately and nobody seems to care about fixing it. And it keeps getting worse. Not the reason the Texans lost but still.

If the Texans were to consider trading for Olave (ND)….expect to give up a RD1. He’s not an UFA until the 2027 season, which means he’s still playing on his rookie contract. To be honest, a RD1 may not be enough.

Slayton has been decent during his NYG career, but probably has much better stats if someone other than Daniel Jones is throwing him the ball. He’s an UFA next season which could put the Giants in the market to move on versus re-signing him. Maybe a RD5 and Hutchinson would be enough for the Giants to unload him. His 4.34-40 speed could be enticing in complimenting Nico.

Higgins has done a lot to have teams like him. He’s had solid stats playing along side Chase. Higgins is a big bodied WR in the same vein as Nico. That would be a great pairing for CJ. I’m not sure Burrows would be a happy camper if the Bengals were to move him. Like Slayton, he’s an UFA at seasons end which means they may not be able to afford the new contract. The Bengals probably demand a RD4 pick at minimum with an OL thrown into the deal. I’d try to offer a RD4 and Howard with a straight face….maybe throw in Hutchinson on the deal.

His body is breaking down, you can see it in his throws and when he gets hit... He's going to need multiple weeks of clean football to get back to normal. The punishment he's taking is not sustainable, I'm surprised he made it out of this game. I have said nobody will ever break Carr's 76 sack record.. not because a QB will never have a line bad enough to allow 77 sacks, but because I don't think a QB can survive 77 sacks. It's amazing Carr didn't get knocked out and was available to reach 76..

For the record, this line play is worse than anything David dealt with. This is the worst line play I've witnessed as a Houston Texans fan and that's saying something. Stroud has probably shook as many sacks as he's recorded.. something Carr didn't do, who got so messed up he ended up running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage recording extra sacks.

Even average to below average talent performs better than this conglomeration of craptastic ineptitude. It's called coaching and "want to". They keep saying "we are working hard in practice, we will get it right" Well its been this garbage all season. Something isn't right. I don't see any "want to fire" out of these guys.
Did you all see that Online dude from the Chargers whack that Dline guy for twisting up on Herbert? I don't see ANY of that fire out of this starting 5. Just going through the motions!
