Texans General Draft discussion

Which thread are we using for comments, picks and overall draft talk tonight. This one, or the new draft tracker thread. I’m not bouncing between the two so someone make an executive decision!

I suggest the draft tracker thread for general draft talk, this thread for texans specific draft talk, and the threads that will be created throughout the draft for talk about each shiny new pick specifically.

I prefer an offensive lineman but if the top guys are gone and Egbuka is there...I have zero issues. His floor is very high imho. Worst case, he's a solid if somewhat unspectacular slot receiver. A mild disappointment in that case, but not a true bust. Still a valuable piece. Upside is above and beyond JSN...who made the pro-bowl last year. He's also swarmy as hell for a receiver and has a lot of intangibles that are plusses.

He's got a chance to be a better version of Kirk, and can replace him next year. And next year...add a true burner/outside receiver. Now you've got 3 guys that can all burn you.

Heck...I'm not even opposed to doubling up and getting a guy in the 3rd round that can be that guy.
The next good OL Nick drafts will be the first good OL Nick drafts.

Booker was picked at 12, Zabel at 18, and Egbuka at 19. No other linemen or receivers were picked during the teens. That tells me they weren't interested in Golden at 25, so no regrets there.

I have come to appreciate how Caserio picks a strategy and drafts with intent.

Agreed. I’m sure their board was Banks and Booker for trade up. Maybe Zabel and Egbuka given him comments about a possible upper teens trade up.

Golden and Donovan Jackson might have been stick and pick at 25 candidates. And when the Texans were up to pick the team traded down because the value of the trade down exceeded the value of the players on their board.

I hated not getting Jackson at 25, but i’m ok with it given the trade down. Plenty of players that will be picked tonight who will help this team!

Lots of good DBs available day 2. Gives me pause regarding the Pitre extension. But they wanted to secure a position and focus on other areas. Tons of luxury picks to choose from. One thing is for sure… Texans will test that BPA saying. Because if i’m looking on the BPA board i’m seeing it littered with DBs and edge rushers after round 1.

RB's too.

Yep. Then throw in LBs like Schwesinger and Knight. Texans can really throw a dart and get a good football player here. If they go luxury pick it’s a planning for the future move and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’d be ok with Schwesinger learning behind Azeez then taking over to be DeMeco’s next Fred Warner for example.

And as we know, injuries happen so if you have a guy rated first round, go get them. Good players tend to find a way onto the football field.

Guy like Scourton, yes you have Anderson and Hunter but DeMeco rotates. If Scourton is Karlaftis with better pass rush he’ll find a way to impact this team.

Revel same thing. If he’s good enough to get on the field with this secondary that’s a problem for opposing offenses.

This team is going to win or lose based on its defense. Just like last season (but hopefully offense is improved). Offense just needs to score 20 and win the turnover battle, it’ll be a done deal.

These pressers remind me how Texans fans should thank whatever power they believe in that we now have Nick after years and years of whatever brain trust we had prior. Intentionality. Conviction. A PLAN. Top 5 GM in the league and he’s not 4 or 5 IMO.
This is the kind of GM I wanted instead of RS, BOB

Really smart guy

And it’s funny how some here initially didn’t want him b/c of his ties to Easterby and BoB.

I really can’t fault those guys’ reasoning because Easterby and OB were disastrous on an epic level.

It’s like marrying a girl and finding out one of her exes has AIDS. Was she with him before after the AIDS diagnosis? You will ask for a blood test.

The fact that we are where we are at with this team today is a miracle.

Caserio is talking to everyone in the NFL to get a feel for things and see what opportunities there are to trade up or down. People know to call the Texans because they are always up for a trade.

They made phone calls around the league Thursday and engaged with teams about potential trades up and trades down. It’s unclear how high the Texans were willing to move up but two sources indicated one of the teams they tried to trade with was the Dallas Cowboys to move up to No. 12.

“I don’t want to say we talked to the whole league, but we probably talked to the whole league at every different level,” Caserio said, adding he was probably more active Thursday than he has been in any of his five years leading the draft. “If teams aren’t interested, they aren’t interested. Nothing we can do about it.”

“We think we’re going to get some pretty good football players tomorrow,” Caserio said. “We felt like the value of the draft was basically in the middle, so we’ll try to take advantage of our opportunities here tomorrow.

“We put ourselves in a pretty good position for next year as well.”

“We have more flexibility tomorrow than we did today,” Caserio said. “There’s still a number of good players out there that we really like. We’re probably not going to get everybody, but there’s probably going to be some players that we feel good about that we feel are going to be an asset to our program.”

The Texans liked Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., a league source said, but after conferring with agents, realized he was going much earlier than where many mock drafts had him going.

The Texans also liked Alabama guard Tyler Booker, who went 12th to the Cowboys; Emeka Egbuka, who was drafted No. 19 by the Buccaneers; and guard Donovan Jackson, who went to the Vikings at No. 24, one pick ahead of Houston, though it’s unclear if the Texans would have taken him there. The Texans liked him, but also thought they could get him later.

I need Ratledge and Noel today Nick. Don't understand all the love for Higgins. looks slow on tape to me. We already have 2 of him on the roster in Xavier Hutchison and Jared Wayne. Noel's , faster, quicker and overall more athletic than Higgins & We need more twitch and explosion opposite Nico.
