Texans General Draft discussion

PositionsI want team to address in draft in no particular order:

OL ( If OT, preferably a guy who can kick inside if needed).

WR (outside preferred)

DT

RB

TE

I think the team’s draft visits and how they set the table so far this offseason makes addressing these positions doable. I am leaning more towards Nick trading down to gain an additional pick. And depending how far he trades down stockpiling another 2026 pick.

I don’t see much difference in the prospects that’ll be there at 25 and 40. Similar to last year’s draft in that regard.

And a LB that isn't a huge liability in passing situations

With Speed here, I’d say good luck with that.

My list is very similar to Mr Joker above. I would add if there is a corner or safety they really like, I would be onboard adding a guy there too.

If Caserio trades down and picks up say a 3rd How would you feel about a draft like this in the 1st 3 rds?

I have a similar list, with a few changes.

I would LOVE a TE, but I don’t necessarily think we absolutely need one.

I do think we NEED a CB3. If Sting or Lassiter have to sit out a game or two, I’m not comfortable with our backups to fill in. Last year it really hurt us when Okudah was on the field.

If we draft an OT that doesn’t have the experience of moving inside, I thought Howard was decent at LG, so I would be comfortable having him there if we absolutely needed him to be.

Also, I would mind drafting 2 OL if we can swing it.

Are you talking about Williams the OT from Texas? If you are, I would say no. I think he needs AT LEAST 2 more years of development. I’d prefer Conerly or Grant as OT. Another G option I like is Miles Frazier out of LSU.

Kyle Williams WR Washington St.

I do think TE is a major need, if Loveland is there at 1-25 I stick and pick. I'm on the fence about Mason Taylor. The current TE room is subpar and cant block worth a crap either. With this said I would be perfectly willing to sit back and draft Ferguson at 3-89 or Fidone in the 4th even if I had to trade up for him. Conyers is another guy I like a lot.

I like Williams. I think he’d be a good option for us. He’s one of my options on day 2.

1.25 = 720
2.33 = 580

The Browns could come close the 140 point difference with their 3rd at 3.94 (124 pts) +their 6th round at 6.192 (15 pts).

This deal makes sense as the Rams may covet Dart at 1.26.

Sorry, but the Browns have a 'motivational poster' in their scout room: "Do NOT trade with Texans ever again!!!"

I would do this deal without the 6th.

A draft choice would be competing with Hansen more so than Speed.

Ok but with Speed, that's essentially 4 guys that will suck up 99% of the snaps (barring injury of course) so I'm just not seeing the snaps.

How many backers did they keep last year? Six? Sorry...I don't remember. Lucky is the man with the plan with these kinds of questions, so do you remember Lucky?

9 LBs played in at least one game for the Texans in 2024. 6 of the 9 received snaps on defense. If course, the Texans had the near season long injury to Harris and the Al-Shaair suspension. As covered in the past, the Texans play 3 LBs about 1/3 of the snaps. So they have 4 LBs (Al-Shaair, Harris, Speed, and To'o²) competing for snaps. The Texans will probably keep 2 more for special teams and depth. Currently, the Texans have 3 other LBs on the roster, Hansen, Hill, and Niemann. Also, remember that Harris and Speed will become FAs after the season.

What we're hearing about the Texans' draft: Yeah, the offseason retooling of the offensive line will continue into the draft. The Texans have four picks in the top 90, and expect at least one of those to be a bodyguard for quarterback C.J. Stroud. We've heard from numerous scouts that Houston is high onoffensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. (Texas) if he makes it to No. 25. Getting another pass-catching option for Stroud is in play early, too. -- Miller

Or 1.25 for 33 and 67. Put pressure on them to accept a 2026 day 3 pick to make up the difference if they want a quarterback.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic released The BEAST draft preview yesterday. He has Taylor ranked as the 33rd overall prospect.
This is why I don't think that drafting him at 2-33 would be a big reach. He's a definite upgrade and a long time starter.

Brain fart 1-25.

If LG- Jackson is off the board at 25, I’m game for a trade-back.

My alternate selections for the OL:
RT- Ajani Cornelius (Oregon)
LT- Jalen Travis (Iowa State)
RD7 Option:
OG- Marcus Wehr (Montana State)

Just looked at PFF's big board. They have Jackson within sight of the Texans second round pick (58) at #50.

They have Banks at 19, Golden at 21, Loveland at 25, Zabel at 29 and Conerly at 35.

Really haven't thought it possible, but my ideal 1-2 is Golden and Jackson.

PFF rankings are just approximation of a few analytical group thinkers who like to show each other how much they know. Don’t waste your money like me just because draft simulators are fun to do. Think real NFL folks have a good laugh @ expense of media platforms. Ourlads is decent, I’ve seen GM’s with book in hand, but all follow their own scouting reports.

There are going to be a lot of mistakes taken ahead of #25. Texans will be prepared to take advantage, even if it’s a defensive player, BPA.

Thinking of these OL prospects the Texans have visited in “tiers”… day 1/2 prospects in bold:

I am diving into the OL prospects more deeply this weekend, similar to what I did with WRs last weekend. I am developing a draft day crush on Jonah Savaiinaea the more I watch him. True junior, team captain, has started at RG and both tackle positions in his career. Mountain of a man inside with excellent size/length and very good athleticism for a man his size to boot.

Jackson is a senior, Zabel and Ratledge are 5th year seniors. Savaiinaea might have the highest ceiling of the interior OL prospects in this year’s class. Would be a target in the 2nd imo.

OL
Jalen Rivers (SB)
Josh Carlin UCLA (Tropical)
Aiden Williams University of Minnesota- Duluth (EW)
Jarrod Huffington Iowa State (Hula)
Ozzy Trapilo BC (SB)
Marcus Mbow Purdue (COM)
Grey Zabel NDSU (SB, COM, 30)
Tate Ratledge Georgia (COM)

Jonah Monheim USC (COM)
Wyatt Milum WV (SB, COM)
Jonah Savaiinaea Arizona (COM)
Josh Conerly Oregon (30)
Charles Grant William & Mary (PD, 30)

Hayden Conner Texas (PD, locPD)
Kelvin Banks Jr Texas (PD)
Chase Lundt UCONN (30)
Jake Majors Texas (PD)
Luke Newman MSU (30)
Aireontae Ersery Minnesota (30)

Hehe, dang it took me way too long to figure out the (parenthesis) meaning. Shoulda had a 2nd cup of coffee. (I kept thinking SB was Super Bowl, 'Well that doesn't make any sense', and then looping back all over again.)

PS. SB = Senior Bowl for anyone stuck like me.

Teams like the Falcons 5 picks and the Vikings 4 picks should be willing to trade down.
And Washington too I believe.
Don't think NC won't trade back either.
If he can get another second round pick out of it I bet he's in. Trade back high in the second round and take Donovan Jackson the guard or Josh Conerly the Tackle

They definitely interested in Grey Zabel.

If Conerly and Donovan Jackson are available in round 2, a trade for 33 and 67 would be amazing. Two 2s and three 3s could bring huge haul of quality players and that doesn't include Caserio utilizing 2026 extra round two and four.
Some KC fans saying Chiefs are sold on Josh Simmons despite knee. Nick could work that angle.

Am I the only one who thinks the Texans need an upgrade at Center?

To this end, I'd be all for drafting Zabel at 25; as it would get them the flexibility to but the best 5 linemen on the field.
I think Patterson is decent. He will never be all pro but I think he’s a solid piece. If we draft Zabel, then I trust the coaches to decide who the best five are. If that means putting him at C, and having other guys play G then so be it. But I could see them putting Zabel at G and potentially moving him to C another year

Interesting to see how Patterson will do after full off season at one position with same player on either side.

Nah, it wuz just you man! :whip:

Speaking of center there is chanch of Jake Majors being avl in the 6th. I would like to bring him in to settle the center position. He has played at a high level of competition and with high grades plus he is maintained a high GPA. I know i advocate aganist T-Rex arms however he grade high in pass protection which is what we need at cnter.

I’m hearing multiple sources that the Texans are very high on Banks. It could be they are all citing the same source who knows. He has G/T flexibility. He would very likely start at one of the guard sports this year, and possibly kick to LT next year.

If he is gone, I’m looking at Golden, Ekuba, or one of the other olineman. A trade up or down is a possibility as well. Although unlikely, if Loveland is there, that would have to be a very serious consideration as well.

John Harris did a segment called “This guy no matter what” on Texans All Access this week. Premise taken from the movie Draft Day where Costner’s character wrote on a post it, “Vontae Mack no matter what”.

Kelvin Banks would be my pick for “This guy no matter what.”

I'm Conerly/Banks/Zabel/Jackson in some order I would be happy with any of them. I'm pretty sure one of them will be there.

Need to get one of them day one. More I think about it, more likely I think this is the route the team goes.

Main reason is depth of class at other positions relative to OL. EX: I think they can find an impact contributor at DT, WR or RB at 79 and 89. Not so sure there will be an OL there that would be a tangible upgrade over who they already have.

So 25 and 58 are the spots I think they can find an OL with a realistic path to making the roster. 58 probably requires a trade up to lock in “their guy” if there is a run on the position around pick 50. Whereas WR I am confident a guy will be there that CJ can work with… that means OL day 1 is the best move for this team. Get your pick of the litter and hope you make the right choice.

I think Nick is more likely to trade up than trade down day 1 and 2. Supply and demand. He is going to maximize value and expose the fact that there are more sellers than buyers to go get his guy(s) for a cheaper trade up price than what it would normally take.
