That is kind of short sighted don't you think? I mean how can you compare the two players in the first place? Two difference philosophies, and two different athletes. You don't think Schaub knows the same things? Schaub just does not have the running ability to do those things, and we did not bring him in here for that kind of thing either so expecting him to do it is silly.
Not really. After the Marshawn Lynch Fumble, we ended up in a third down situation. Pass protection broke down & Matt was able to navigate his way out of the pocket. Scrambling to his left, he was able to gain separation between himself & the pursuing defender. DeAndre Hopkins was in front of him, Schaub had his eyes on him. As he felt his time was running out & DeAndre was unable to open up, Matt threw the ball away. Had he the ability to turn his head away from that single receiver, he'd have seen Andre streaking towards him, uncovered in the back of the end zone. He might not have known it, but he had time to stop, set his feet & deliver a catchable pass to Andre.
In the divisional play off round, there was a similar situation. Matt got away from the pass rush, had plenty of time to survey the field, set his feet & make a decent attempt to pick up a third down conversion. Didn't happen as he felt pressure that wasn't there & threw the ball away...... punt.
In the Oakland game, at home 2011. The game ended with Matt throwing the ball out of bounds on what would have been a game winning play. Same situation as the one I described from last Sunday's game. He threw the ball expecting Jacoby to push through the defender (much the way Sherman pushed through OD) to catch the ball in the end zone. It would have been better to stop running & put some air under the ball, allowing Jacoby to out jump the defender. It might have ended with the same result, but at least Jacoby would have had a chance to make a play on the ball. Instead, it was everything he could do to prevent the interception.
I'm not asking Matt to do anything beyond his ability. I'm asking him to maximize what he can do.
But instead of understanding that we brought in O linemen in to pass block so that the QB we have and have invested in has a clean pocket, and it is not happening....
So should we just give up? Can't win another game, the OL is broke. Ryan Clady & the Broncos' starting Center are out. Their OL looks good, because their QB gets rid of the ball fast. He also scares defenses with his propensity to throw the ball behind them & make them look silly.
Russell Wilson was playing with 3 back-ups on the line. He got sacked as many times as Schaub did. Brooks Reed got a sack. But Wilson ran out of a bunch of other sacks & made plays that helped his team.
Schaub is dropping back and getting creamed because our O Line is not blocking, or at least not with any consistency.
I call BS. It is the O Lines responsibility to overcome Schaub's lack of mobility and keep him clean, or at least most of the time. .
& the question is will he do something about it or not?
I don't like to make the David Carr comparison, because I don't think it fits, but after hearing that Schaub's been the most blitzed QB in the league ytd, I'm starting to wonder.
When they blitz you like that, they're telling you they do not respect your game. It's the equivalent to being spit in the face, btch slapped. You gotta make them pay. Continue to convert third downs, score TDs. It's demoralizing to the defense & makes them question how much effort they need to put into each blitz. If you're rewarding them by not converting, by getting off the field, by not scoring... it's going to keep coming because it's working.
Sure, the OL has some responsibility in this. Matt needs someone to throw the ball to. But bottom line... it's on Matt.
