OK, I'll go out (way out) on a limb here.

Jorvorskie Lane, RB, Texas A&M. round 7

If the rationale is that we need a between the tackle bruiser, especially in short-yardage red zone situations, and also to spell Slaton (and I am not saying I am bought into this last aspect of the argument), then Lane would certainly be a bull who could be had on the cheap.

Now, do I seriously believe it will happen? No. But what the heck. Put me down for Jorvorskie. Gives me something to root for.

(I just think the Texans have more pressing needs than RB.)

all the best,
rick

Hey Beerlover,

Did you have to make my color Dark Orchid? I'm starting to feel a little insecure here. :D

OK, I'll go out (way out) on a limb here.

Jorvorskie Lane, RB, Texas A&M. round 7

rick

And he could also double as a space eating DT!

Put me down for James Davis in the 4th.

He could go in the 3rd but I'll stick with the 4th. I like Brown and Foster too and wouldn't mind them getting selected. I just have a feeling the Texans won't select a RB until the 4th or after.

I'm a Uconn student so I've had a first row view of the Donald Brown show this year. As a texans fan, I would love to see Houston take him to split carries with Slaton. He's a physical runner with a burst and the vision and patience to fit perfectly in a ZB scheme. He's the physical back that I'd love to see Houston pair with Slaton's speed.

Now, his problem is that he's not a great pass blocker (if you've seen the UCONN pass offense, you'd realize he's had almost no practice), but he's got an absolutely amazing attitude and work ethic and hopefully that can be taken care of.

If healthy I think Mike Goodson could be a hell of sleeper pick. Its unfortunate things didnt work out at A&M.

Shonn Greene would be the best fit to compliment Slaton. I doubt that Greene would be there in the 3rd to mid rounds where we would realistically take a RB considering how many needs we have on defense.

Greene is a bruiser though, and has a skill set a little different than what Slaton has. He is great at getting yards after the first hit. I would love to have a back field with Greene and Slaton. Hell, Greene could end up being the better guy for all I know. Sort of doubtful considering how well Slaton played this season, but Greene has loads of potential coming into the NFL. He reminds me a lot of Chester Taylor. Highly doubtful that he would be on the boards when we would decide to get another back though.

Personally - I think the 3rd is too early to take our RB. We just have too many defensive holes. We're looking for a guy who will probably get a MAX of 10-12 carries.

The more I think about it, the more I think we're going to end up addressing it in free agency.

I expect us to go out in the 5-7th to get one. Hell, may even go undrafted FA.

Please read my entire post before you critizise. Forgive me if I push my guy too much but I want Ian Johnson 5'11" 199lbs 4.47 speed. In the ZBS, we need that one cut and go player like Slaton to get us to the red zone quickly. Johnson is same type which allows SS to get a rest and keep a speedy back capable of getting 20 yards each time he touches ball on the field. I see need for a stronger back for 2-4 yards that we should be able to get in later rounds. This back can be used for 3rd or 4th and short or goal. A FB could handle this role but has not historically for Texans. I'd like to Slaton type backs splitting 35 carries and a power back for 5 to 10. IMO this does not have to be a 250 lb + guy but about 230 minimum. If a Green is there in 3rd, I'd be all over him. As of now, I want a DE and FS in first two rounds. Also, I've voiced a trade down scenario with maybe Philadelphia in first to allow them to get Mays and us to get William Moore + a 3rd round.

...I have a certain magazine that says the following:

No one is likely to improve his draft status in a bowl game more than Colorado State's Gartrell Johnson, a 225-pound running back who set a FBS bowl record with 375 yards from scrimmage (285 rushing, 90 receiving) in a New Mexico Bowl romp over Fresno State.

And one NFL front office in need of a big back is well aware of Johnson: Texans coach Gary Kubiak's sons Klay (QB) and Klint (SS) play for CSU.

Youtube link: Lengthy clip of Johnson

I'd like to add that Fresno State is 108th out of 119 teams in rush defense allowing 210 yards per game. 97th in overall defense.

Just something to think about when looking at this guy's bowl performance.

That's not to say the guy didn't play well in other games because he did, he had a fantastic year. I'm just providing some food for thought.

Yeah, I know. And watching the youtube clip...I am a bit skeptical of his REAL power when needing to move a pile.

The thing is, though: He's at CSU with Kubiak's sons.

You know the drill.

OK I have two guys at different times in the draft, why because we got lucky with injuries and Slaton needs help to last.

Donald Brown RB UConn in the first after a big trade down.

and in the 5th round Tyrell Sutton RB Northwestern

what you got if God Forbid Slaton gets hurt? thats the point you need to protect your weapons by adding more weapons to spread out the risk, kinda like investments. anyway I believe he is thinking along the lines of another trade down like last year, that worked out pretty well & how the Texans aquired Slaton in the 1st place.

another example is Carolina who drafted DeAngelo Williams #27th in 06 & came back in 08 with Jonathan Stewart #13 overall! how's that running game working for em?

RUSHING OFFENSE: A The Panthers finished the season averaging 152.3 yards per game on the ground and had a league-high 29 touchdowns on the ground. DeAngelo Williams didn't get any love in the MVP voting, but he had an incredible season rushing for 1,515 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also averaged 5.5 yards per carry behind a rebuilt offensive line. Rookie Jonathan Stewart set team rookie records rushing for 836 yards and 10 touchdowns

We don't need a RB in the first round for one, and for two you're out of your mind if you think that Kubes and Smith would even consider it. Kubiak let us go a whopping two years without a RB and passed on Mendenhall and many others the year before. RB is the last position that the Texans would use their #1 pick on right now.

We have to get either a S or DE in the first round or possibly a LB if a major stud pass rushing LB is available.

We need a RB to back up Slaton, but we can do that this year in the 3rd or 4th or maybe even the 5th.

Word for word in agreement, my friend. That's why I selected Ian Johnson. Denver as we all know had 4 backs and this past season we basically had one, Slaton. I can't remember being the exact scenario two years in a row. Theoretically, we pick 15 rather than 18 and should get a very similar package in trade down scenario. Now wouldn't that be a kick in the head? If we don't plug most of our major holes this off season, something will smell. I just wished one of the FA defensive players like Asomugha would end up with Texans. I just want one defensive starter in free agency for my late Christmas present.

Yeah, that would help out a whole lot. If we could just get one. At some point in time the Texans need to get really aggressive and get one good starter to fill one of our needs. It could even be at CB or LB.

Obviously it has worked out well, but that sure wasn't what they were building except as a hope and a prayer. Williams started 2 games his 1st 2 years.

I doubt McNair agrees but I am almost ready for the team to over pay if it is for a shut down CB or a Mario type DE for example. Sure, we have been burned on some FA in past but look at who they were and who was selecting and who was designing the contracts.

Exactly. We have typically gone after players with Buyer Beware stickers all over them. You have to be aggressive in FA and the draft to build a team fast. There are always good free agent signings every year, but you've got to jump on players fast when they're a position of need, because the good ones usually get signed pretty quick. And you're not over paying when you're getting the production. You just don't want to over pay when you are going after a FA that most likely won't have many years left on their contract.

I wonder what the Eagles will be doing with Lito Sheppard now since they were never able to trade him this year.

Shepherd is interesting. My question is, how will contracts be worded once the cap is gone? Do you sign cheap first years and then balloon a large payment first year after bargaining agreement is eliminated. Some insist it will be re-negotiated, but I don't know.

Just curious, do you have any example of big name FA's the past few years who signed contracts which would have fit within the Texans' cap?

Granted they made some bad signings early on with Wade, Walker to get them in trouble, but even the year of Weaver they were limited because of Glenn and those other players. Just wonder if there are really people they could have signed the last three years after having made early bad decisions.

Man, I can't go back several years and remember each free agent that was available in which year and what the specific cap figures were at each part of the off season. The Texans have been around like 7 years now. Every year it is a hand full of free agents though that each team could use or that could fill a need or two here and there just about. It's not always the money that is on the cap initially, but in some cases you have to get creative and dump a player or two here and there or trade another guy away to free up space for a free agent if you think he is an important enough player. The Cowboys are great at that. Someone was mentioning Jerry Jones son yesterday, and he does a great job at freeing up space and structuring contracts to make it work for a given season where they just have to wait until the next year to have more room to pay them more of the salary the next season. A lot of times it is all about how the contracts are structured.

Lito Sheppard in my eyes would have been a good player to go after from the Eagles. I'm not sure if we could have gotten a good enough deal from them to pull the trigger, but it would have been interesting to look at. He is a good veteran that should be around for a while and won't demand top dollars.

I would have liked to have tried to make a move for Stroud last year as well. He could have been a nice answer to our DT debacle for a few years possibly.

Those are two from last off season that I remember I wanted the Texans to go after.

I thought you were talking about guys like Nate Clements or Asante Samuel.

Stroud was doable. Hard to criticize that one too much though since they expected Okoye to make a 2nd year jump.

Shepard wasn't a free agent and isn't this year either. If the trade price was right, maybe as high as a 4th, that could be an option.

Main point was, under Kubiak they haven't had the money to go after the Clements, Faneca, Samuels of the world. Let's see what they do this year. I tend to like the 2nd tier down for money and risk reasons. Look at the hundreds of millions spent on WR FA's last year and none panned out.

Like I said, you have to be careful. I wasn't really referring to the BIG BLOCKBUSTER players that got those max contracts like Clements, Samuel, and a few others. Sheppard wouldn't have demanded that kind of money. He would have had to have been had in a trade. A 4th wouldn't have gotten him though and I wouldn't have traded Sheppard for a 4th rounder either. Maybe a 3rd and a 5th or something like that. I would have done that, because all we will end up doing is drafting another CB somewhere in the 2nd rounds or later any way and those players are gambles while Sheppard is a really solid player who should have a lot of years left to play.

I really wanted Stroud though. Not to replace Okoye, but to replace Travis Johnson. Stroud is a beast and I would have loved to have put him next to Mario.

And another thing you have to remember is that every off season there is always a ton of players that are whining about this and mad about that. Usually having to do with their contracts or something and many of them become tradeable players. You've got to be aggressive when talking to other teams about finding out what they might be willing to accept when they have a disgruntled player and they're in a vulnerable situation. The Patriots front office is great at that and the Cowboys are as well. Same with the Eagles. The Eagles always seem to pick up a few really good players that fit in their defense every year that aren't really HUGE name players who are demanding the Bigtime contracts and get good value out of them.

You really think Texans will go running back in first after Slaton set team record and the needs for defense? I'm gonna respectfully disagree.

BPA and yes Brown is a stud, he and Slaton would push each other huge heights. Just get them the balls.

time will tell, who knows excatly what the future holds? those above, however have spoken. everyone entitiled to their opinions :spit:

I would be sick to my stomach if the Texans pass on clear bpa to address need unless they trade down to add more depth. Also downbeat if Donald Brown or Shonn Green where avaiable in 2nd & Texans passed or Jeremiah Johnson or Rashad Jennings in 3rd. after that I would be open to anyone mentioned in the 4th or beyond. thanks to y'all for your valued opinions & help with this years RB draft class.

If you think Shepherd is worth a 3rd and 5th, think about trading down from 15th. We got a 3rd and 6th for 18th spot in first. There is your trade for Shepherd & you still have all your regular picks. I would do that trade only if you think Shepherd will beat out Dunta or Reeves.
