Texans come to terms with Arian Foster

Just look at the guy's who have been on the cover in the past .... :smiliepalm:

Peyton Hillis - Mr. One Year Wonder, not really unexpected.
Drew Brees - Great season, defense fell apart in the away playoff game. The "Super Bowl hangover" isn't that uncommon anyways, but they still won 11 games.
Polamalu - Missed some games due to injury, team didn't do well and missed the playoffs.
Fitz - Great season, started every game, made second round of the playoffs
Brett Favre - Traded to an inferior team, but had a pretty typical season compared to his last couple. Statistically he wasn't that much worse than the last couple seasons.,
...

It's not a 100% thing at all. Arian or Andre would be fine regardless of what game features them on the cover.

Fantastic deal and where people are saying it doesn't look favourable to Foster, I actually think the structure looks very positive to him, it means he likely plays out the entire contract, where the big 6 year backloaded ones likely will be cap casualties before they reach the big $$$'s. I'd guess Foster earns more in 5 years than CJ1K earns in the first 4 of his deal for instance.

He also likely gets one more big contract if healthy, as he'll be right around the point where his performance isn't going to have dropped off yet although he'll be a ticking time bomb by then.

Foster on the cover of Madden 13? I'd prefer if he wasn't.

Nah we can skip on that Madden Cover.

It's not like Houston Sports Teams are not already battling against fate itself just by trying to be successful.

Last year I voted for Chris Johnson I think. The AFCS isn't that scary anymore but if Luck is in the running then I guess I'll vote for him.

I think Arian is a Texan for life by accepting this deal. How cool is that

Reminds me of when Andre Johnson first extended his rookie contract, to stay a Texan. Then later in passing said it would be nice to re-negotiate & so the Texans did making him set for life. Give it two years & the same thing could happen for Arian.

I also feel similarly in regards to Mario. I think it's in the best interest of all involved to get a deal done. This gives me added confidence it could in fact happen. If it does, I think we could enjoy the ride of our collective Texans lifetime. :logo:

Too much IMHO, for what we want to accomplish, but meh we'll just have to see. And let's not talk about him hitting HOF ballot just yet?

I thought you were serious there, for a second. LOL. Good one....made me laugh.

From LZ:

Spoke with another NFL team who told me Arian Foster's cap hit will be 8 million this year and 8.25 next year & 9 million in 2014

So that means:
8 mm in 2012
8.25 mm in 2013
9 mm in 2014
Total 25.25

4.75 million of that 30 million in the first 3 years remaining. Divide by 2 for 2.375 million per year. Multiply by 5 and you get 11.875 million as Arian's signing bonus :D

Edit: cap hits by year:

8
8.25
9
9.125*
9.125*

Average of remaining money is 9.125 million for the last two years. Hooray Math!

Other than Mario actually signing, you have & will read this into every bit of news we hear.

"Don't have enough cap room"
Mussop: "Most likely bye bye Mario."

"We have a lot of cap room"
Mussop: "Most likely bye bye Mario."

"They talked to an OLB prospect at the combine"
Mussop: "Most likely bye bye Mario."

"Signed a new QB coach"
Mussop: "Most likely bye bye Mario."

And other than Mario actually signing with another team you will continue to hold on and live in denial. It would be super nice to add Mario to what this defense has become, but no way hell is he more important than keeping our OL together. We have to resign Myers and Breisal. After they sign we need to extend some of the guys that are going to be unrestricted next year. There is no way that all that can happen and bring Mario back.

But you just keep holding on to that dream dreamer. Don't worry in the end you and others will see this is the right path to go down. It will ensure we have a deep and talented team for years.

A mod should probably make this a sticky. There will be no end to the questions about "How much is Foster counting against the cap?" Am I right?

I hope they sticky it and make life easier for everybody. It would be cool to have a sub-forum that was nothing but sticky'd contract numbers and cap hits. We could catalog a lot of info into that dude.

I made an error, but fixed it. 9.125 is the average for the last 2 years (18.25 m total).

Edit: LZ says "signing bonus is 12 million prorated over 5 years". I think his caphits are slightly off then. Oh well, 12 million it is.

Either his cap hits or his signing bonus is slightly off. If the cap hit for the first year is 8M and he gets a total of 18M then we have the following 2 equations:
SB/5 + salary = 8
SB + salary = 18

Solving for SB gives a signing bonus of 12.5M with an initial salary of 5.5M

& you say this, regardless if we have $4M in cap space or $64M. It doesn't matter to you. No matter how much cap space we have, it's not enough.....

Considering the cap situation right now, we cannot sign Mario if we want to sign our other guys as well (Myers, Brisiel, etc.). Maybe if we cut a few guys (Jones, Lienhart) and restructure a few deals (Walter, AJ, Ryans) we can, but right now I don't see it happening.

Most people who have really delved into the Texans' cap situation think they can keep everyone without too much trouble. The numbers floating around saying they only have 1-5 mil in cap space for the 2012-2013 season don't seem credible based on the available contract information.

& what's our cap situation? One minute I'm hearing $4M, the next $30M

have we found a credible source yet?

Just keep hanging on to that string eventually the last thread is going to snap and you will realize the truth. No one knows exactly what we have left but everyone knows its not much. It couldn't more obvious. It would take Mario giving us a huge hometown discount. I can't ever remember a player passing up MILLIONS of dollars to play anywhere. I don't know how you could expect him to.

tom brady a few years back did it & i believe some steeler o-lineman did it like 10 years ago or something... I wouldn't expect a player to do it, but you never know.

I'm like TK, i'll continue to hold out hope until he officially leaves..I don't believe that Wade & the FO believe they'll be OK going into the season with Reed & Barwin & likely a rookie as their core OLB's next year. None of those guys have proven a thing in terms of being capable of taking over a game.

What a great story. An UDFA, relegated to the practice squad, goes about his daily grind, biding time and waits for his opportunity. And when it avails itself, he seizes it. Then, he goes about his business, playing lights out and under the terms of his contract. No whining. No excuses. Just does his job better than most.

Class act. I am glad Arian Foster is a Texan.

That's $101.469M

Foster's deal adds $8M..... Okoye & Slaton, probably work out to be about $4M of dead money. Say we set aside $4M for our draft picks. So we're looking at $117M

$7M in cap space, without any cuts or Re negotiations. & 10 Roster spots to go.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Believe me I hope I am wrong. I would love to see what Mario could do with a full year in this defense. I didn't see what alot of other people here saw but I do think Mario brings alot to this defense. Great in run support, he's versatile, can play OLB and any position on the DL. Size and athleticism. He's not a look at me player which I hate.

Of course I see the negatives to. He disappears at times, doesn't take over games at crucial times, doesn't have great technique after all these years. Of course that most likely has to do poor coaching. He's been injured alot the last two years.

Radio 610 on a bullit point news flash said Foster's base first year is $18 million and that is a whole 'nother thing. Could have been a tongue typo.

Gotta be a mis read, his total PAYOUT would be 18 million, but that includes his signing bonus PLUS his base pay, totaling 18 million

Ok that's what most folks were saying & I thought the first year guarantee was 18 meaning base +upfront bonus. Just wished there was an accurate source.

I think, for me, the way DutchRudder put pencil to paper makes sense.

He's a pretty sharp cat, and the figures below seem to jibe IF the reports are true. Dutch just took the time to work out the math on it, seems like as good of a guess as any. Unless there is some fine print in Arian's contract...

From LZ:

4.75 million of that 30 million in the first 3 years remaining. Divide by 2 for 2.375 million per year. Multiply by 5 and you get 11.875 million as Arian's signing bonus :D

Edit: cap hits by year:

8
8.25

9.125*

Average of remaining money is 9.125 million for the last two years. Hooray Math!

So there IS a way, according to DutchRudder's math, that Arian IS making around $18 or $19 million in year 1 (2012) because his base could likely be $8 mill and his signing bonus might be $11 mill = $19 mill.

But, IIRC, only the base of $8 mill is applied to the 2012 cap figures...the $11 mill (or a good portion of it) can be spread out or applied to future years. This allows us to keep the 2012 cap hit a little lower.

Someone tell me if I am wrong in this thinking.

The cap hit from the signing bonus of ~12 million gets prorated out over the 5 years. It's paid the day he signs the deal and is fully guaranteed. So as far as Foster is concerned, he currently has that money in his bank account. That's 2.4 million against the cap though. So if his cap number is 8 million this year, then that would make his base salary 5.6 million. That 5.6 million will be paid out in 17 checks over the course of the NFL regular season. For this year, Foster will make that 5.6 million salary plus his signing bonus of 12 million, for about 17.6 million. Saying 18 million paid this year is correct, but the cap hit is 8 million.

$8m cap is very good if true. I had heard on one radio program that his base was $9m + $9m upfront bonus or about $11m cap. $8 m can be covered by JJ and Leinert cut's + 2011 base for Arian. I'm not writing off Mario yet.

Running back Arian Foster re-signed with the Houston Texans on Tuesday and after, he answered questions from the media at a Reliant Stadium press conference. The following is a transcript of his interview.

Running back Arian Foster
(opening statement) “First, I want to thank my offensive line, and my organization, and my coaching staff and everybody in this city, the fans that have showed me so much support and so much love. Once again, I want to thank my offensive line because they made me look a little better than I am. I made sure and told them that, each individually. I’m extremely excited that we were able to come to terms and get a long-term deal done because I love this city. I love this organization. It’s a first-class organization. Mr. Bob McNair, our general manger Rick Smith, our head coach Gary Kubiak, they’ve all shown me so much support ever since I set foot as an undrafted free agent in Houston. I wasn’t sure where I was going to go. They gave me a chance. That’s all that you can ask for in this lifetime. With that being said, I’m excited about the future. I’m excited about doing my best as a Houston Texan and bring a ring to Houston. I want to thank everybody.”

(on his agent saying this was a stressful time for him and what the last few days have been like) “I wouldn’t call it stressful. It’s nerve-racking. It’s tough to handle when your future is kind of out of your hands. You don’t know what the club wants to do. You don’t know what your next move is going to be. Like everything I do in my life, I let it pan out and I react to it. That’s all you can really do.”

Really liked his press conference. Money is not going to change this guy's perspective on life. Glad to have him on board with us long term.
