Texans 2015 Free Agency

It is early.

Yep, and no harm in bringing in guys to try out. Texans aren't going to be movers and shakers in FA, just not their MO. They look for lower tier veterans that have some ability and did well at finding those guys last year, especially in the secondary.

That's not the story that was sold this offseason. It was they were going to be aggressive and I'll give them they have been connected to some high dollar guys - Macklin, Cobb - but no result so far.

They are currently connected to Wilfork/Bruce Carter. It looks like they will work on the defense in FA and draft offense.

I trust Gaine to find an unknown WR or 2 like Tyms.

Tyms was PFF's #1 ranked WR last year during the preseason. He then proceeded to catch 5 passes during the regular season.

The Pats are a team aching for playmakers on the outside. If he couldn't do it there with Brady, then I doubt he can do it anywhere. Some guys can be great athletes and not great football players.

The Pats are a team on offense that kills you with a thousand paper cuts. They dink and dunk and then throw down the seem to Gronk. Tyms was a bad fit in NE. The right QB and the right system Tyms could be a contributor. I see him more in Pittsburgh than I do Houston, I certainly see him landing with a team who features a strong armed QB who likes to throw deep and a solid line.

That is what they were last season. In the past they have not. They play to their personnel and last year they deemed the best grouping not to include Tyms.

He may succeed somewhere but he is a near minimum contract depth guy at this point.

They were also connected to Cobb and Maclin so I don't see how you came to that conclusion.

You believe pancakes?

I believe when the price for Cobb/Maclin got above 8 mil the Texans were out, if they were ever in to begin with. I think Wilfork is more in their price range. I hope Carter gets out of Tampa and signs with the Texans. He would be a perfect fit next to Cushing.

This

And he's still probably better than Martin/Posey.

Majority of the time the first team a FA visits signs with. Don't forget what happened last year when McCown visited Tampa before us.

One thing is true, sometimes Brady struggles outside the numbers.

A strong armed QB like Mallett?

Snarkiness aside, I expect the Texans to sign multiple non-exciting veteran WRs. Under contract at this moment, the Texans passing game looks awful. One guy good starter (Hopkins) and Rb who is good out of the backfield (foster) to go with a largely unknown or largely mediocore QB and below average everything else. Even though rookie Wrs are not the disasters they were in the past, depending on several of them is not wise.
I agree team will bring in several vets to try but 2-3 guys in draft will be better than D.Johnson 2014 (hopefully D.Johnson will will be better than D. Johnson 2014) so that is an upgrade. That same WR for me it is McBride plus he is better in returns, upgrade two. Another possibility would be a trade down selecting TE Max Williams who would be upgrade three. Two of these improve our current passing game.

None include top four WRs.

Yes, and I have read from last preseason and people who were at the practices Savage was phenomenal throwing deep outs and digs.

I agree with infantrycak, Tyms is a min contract guy. But I'd like to see him working out for the Texans with Savage and Mallett.

Nice fantasy spin. That "role for AJ" does not mean that's what they expect from the #2 outside WR.

The Texans need to catch up to get in line with at least mid-league in passing with another 450+ yds.
And I never said that was all they were expecting. We need to get that minimum.

The Texans were ripped up on the ground in 2 of 16 games. Once in New York, where the Giants just gashed the left side. The other versus the Eagles, who spread the Texans out and beat them all over the field. Overall, the defense was 10th in rushing yards allowed and yards per attempt.

The weakest part of the defense was the pass coverage (especially the LBs and Safeties) and the pass rush from those not named JJ Watt. Don't see how putting another NT on the active roster will help there. Overkill seems like the appropriate word to me.
Upgrading any position when you can at reasonable cost does not mean you give up on other areas. Wilfork immediately improves team. I want him, Pickett and Nix. This could extend all 3 players. It seems we are in play for other FAs to strengthen team like Bowers. I don't see any FA receivers but hope I'm wrong.

Your concern about LBs and safeties is one of mine also.

Let me say this. Wilfork has been, and probably still will be better than Pickett. And if the Texans aren't confident that they'll get production out of Nix in 2015, then they should sign a NT. My point is that carrying 3 NTs on game day doesn't make a lot of sense in today's pass happy NFL.

Yeah, if Wilfork is signed I expect Pickett to be gone.

I don't know if picket will be gone. I think wilfork and nix can play some 34 DE. would also give some versatility to mix in some 43. I'd look for one of the DE's to not be here.

Yeah, if Wilfork is signed I expect Pickett to be gone.

I would think that would depend on Nix's health & the coaches opinions of him. Is he completely healed? Do the coaches feel he's ready to be in the rotation this year, or does he need another year of seasoning? Will they stash him on the injury list one more year? With the exception of the studs, it usually takes 2-3 years for a D'lineman to be ready to contribute every week.

That is the complete opposite of everything I have ever heard about Rookie WRs. Last years class was an exception. It usually takes they a few years to adjust. Last years class was special.

I'm not saying they will begin at their peak performance, but adequate is better than what we can expect from the current roster and remaining FAs.

Tyms is actually a pretty big WR, 6'3'', 210. He's only 26 years old.

38.5 vertical
4.40 40-yard dash
3.93 20-yard shuttle
22 bench press reps

He's a guy I would look at to come in and compete. He has deep threat potential.

Camp fodder for a chance to GET IT. I could go along with that. But not a REAL commitment.

Would you consider Wilkfort a high dollar guy? Or do you reserve that for WRs and QBs?

I'd love to be able to put Wilfork, Nix and Pickett around JJ on the goal line.

POWER D.

OK/ My fantasy is to have everyone on last years IR HEALTHY and meeting their pre draft expectations on the field. So behind them would be the Healthy version of Cush and Clowney along with Crick in a 4-3 goal line setup.

From @AlbertBreer & me: Once Brian Hoyer signs with Texans, a trade of Ryan Fitzpatrick to Jets could happen quickly. Sides have talked.

So we could get picks in trade for Schaub, Keenum and Fitz? lol

Dude? You've got to start using the multi-quote button

Shhhh! Did you see how much money they gave Revis? They're stupid, let them be stupid and drop that 2 on us!

difference here though is Revis is somewhat worth what he got...Fitz is barely worth a little more than some navel lint and a stale cheeto.

Receivers are the most likely to make an impact in their rookie season. I suspect the draft is where we pick up receiver(s).
Actually, running backs tend to have the highest "rookie ceiling".

Here's NE recent draft history for WR: (these are the guys that made the squad and actually started games) - All Hail FA!

Julian Edelman - 1st year - 37 REC, 359 YDS, 2 TD (*5th Season lead NE in Yds)

Aaron Dobson - 1st year - 37 REC, 519 YDS, 4 TD

Taylor Price - 1st year - 3 REC, 41 YDS, 0 TD

Brandon Tate - 1st year - 0-0-0 (He was the 3rd rounder the year they took Edelman in the 7th)

Matt Slater - 1st year - 0-0-0

Chad Jackson - 1st year - 13 REC, 152 YDS, 3 TD

Bethel Johnson - 1st year - 16 REC, 209 YDS, 2 TD

Deion Branch - 1st year - 43 REC, 489 YDS, 2 TD (*2nd & 4th Season lead NE in YDS)

David Givens - 1st year - 9 REC, 92 YDS, 1 TD (*3rd Season led NE in YDS)

Ex-#Broncos safety Rahim Moore arrived in Houston to visit with the #Texans. He’s been methodical, letting it all play out before deciding

Is Moore better than Lewis?

You don't remember Rahim Moore?

Is Moore better than Lewis?

Absolutely. He's the best FS on the market after McCourty. This would be a JJo type signing if we got him (JJo was the consolation prize in the Asomugha sweepstakes).

He gets a bad rap for that one play in the playoffs where he got beat deep and Denver got eliminated. Ever since then he has been a top 5 FS in the league. I'm actually amazed at how limited his market has been.
