They list O'Brien's Penn State guy, Mike Farrell as an OT, but again today he's playing OG. Was exclusively there yesterday.

Not saying I believe the man, but everyone on here trashed the guy that brought up Andre being unhappy and was thinking about retirement. When in actuality he was contemplating it. :kitten:

It is better to be skeptical about hear say. Had the German population not believed everything they heard then History would have to be re written.

Chris Myers is actually being the best teammate he can be.

Ben Jones said Chris Myers started putting together the t shirt campaign as soon as @DavidQberry was diagnosed.

Playoffs, I just wanted you to know how highly appreciative I am of your training camp updates... Thanks so much!.. especially because I don't really like Twitter and this is much more convenient for me.

:jam:

All along I have said I am not so concerned re. Nix's meniscus repair, but quite concerned over his long-standing patellar tendonitis. I strongly suspect that he has had no further surgery on the meniscus, but due to continued patellar tendonitis, there was a decision made to go into the patellar area arthroscopically.

This is much like bone spurs of the foot, which almost always occurs as heel spurs which create constant localized inflammation of the underlying plantar fascia (plantar fasciitis). In this case the bone spurs are removed and the inflammation usually will secondarily resolve.

In an arthroscopic procedure know as patellar tendon decompression, localized small areas of the lower border of the patella (knee cap) that may have bone spur-like irregularities constantly keeping the adjacent upper border of the patellar tendon inflamed (patellar tendonitis) [Fig 1], are removed along with small portions of involved inflamed and scarified tendon. This maneuver leaves most of the functional patellar tendon intact [Fig 2], and introduces new blood supply to previously pathologic portion of tendon to encourage good healing.

Fig 1:

Cause-of-patella-tendonitis.jpg

Fig 2:

patellar_02.jpg

Is there a general timeline for expected recovery?

As opposed to the long recovery from surgery on a ruptured patella tendon (ala Cushing and Newton), return to play can be expected to be as soon as 9 weeks. Optimal performance recovery would obviously take somewhat longer.

30 Training Camp Observations: Day 7
Drew Dougherty
1. Players not practicing, coaches and staff were all wearing "Texans for DQ" T-shirts to honor David Quessenberry, who's been battling Lymphoma since June. For more information on how to get a t-shirt to support David, go to www.shop.houstontexans.com to get yours.
...
4. OLB Whitney Mercilus seems to have improved using his hands under the guidance of LB coach Mike Vrabel. Now he needs to be a bit more violent at the point of attack. Do that and his production, impact and role on this defense will expand.
...
6. DE Jeoffrey Pagan had some trouble against wide zone plays on occasion earlier in camp, but today in the halfline drill, he definitely didn't get caught in the wash. As the zone blocking linemen were taking him to the right, he ripped back the other way and ran right into the RB.
...
12. Speaking of Keenum, he probably had his best day, making a number of strong throws to different spots on the field.
...
15. During the up-tempo period, RB Alfred Blue made a strong cut on an inside power run that resulted in a big gain. I was right in the line of vision to see the hole and Blue cut powerfully into that void.
...
20. Before I go any further, this was Hop's day, pure and simple. That backshoulder catch was impressive but he made two, maybe three deep catches as well, victimizing Harris each time. There's no telling what he can do this year but if this was an example of it, look out. I wrote down "Hop...full-on stud - deep ball from Fitz". Fantasy owners, take note and...you're welcome.

21. During the team period, it seemed the offense's multiple personnel groupings and alignments had the defense scrambling a bit. But the communication was still strong, even though it appeared sort of Fire Drill-ish.
...
26. The OL and DL have worked on stunt pick-up pass protection since pads went on. T Derek Newton looked fluid and athletic, sliding laterally to pick up the stunt. On one rep, he slid outside masterfully to slow down DE J.J. Watt on an LB/E stunt.

27. C Chris Myers and G Ben Jones worked extremely well during a pair of reps, transitioning guys and maintaining leverage in the pocket. Even Su'a-Filo showed some lateral agility picking up an inside pressure player. He just needs to lock out and get extended once he makes contact.
...
30. I mentioned Nwachukwu earlier and he showed up again during one of the many situations at the end of practice. The situation: 23-21, :25 seconds left and no time outs. EZ caught a tunnel screen and housed it. Drill over. Well, coaches never expect THAT to happen, so they just put the ball at the first down marker and started over again. EZ was flying up the field. He split a seam and...woosh. I used to be that fast. Wait, no, it was that I WANTED to be that fast, yeah, that's it.

no link, just from conversations with someone who's been with the organization since '03. everyone is a huge fan of arian's play when he's on his game, but his selfishness and attitude are starting to wear thin on people within.

Imagine you bought half a dozen Segues, everybody thought you were the Shiznits, then the new coach comes in & bans them from the facility. Talking about the practice field ain't that far away & "they can walk"

Arian knew they could walk, everybody knew they could walk... that wasn't the point.

He's dealing with it though, he'll come around, nothing to worry about.

Case Keenum 1-on-1 video
Texans TV host Drew Dougherty goes 1-on-1 with quarterback Case Keenum after practice.

10 observations from Day 8 of Texans camp
Dave Zangaro/CSN

17 Training Camp Observations: Day 8
John Harris|Texans Analyst

Walking from NRG to the practice fields, I immediately knew Sunday's workout would be a tad bit different. After months of seeing offense in blue jerseys and defense in white, I saw one of the Texans tight ends in white just ahead of me.

There was a definite method to the madness as head coach Bill O'Brien used Sunday's workout to get a ton of team and situational work done...

...
8. Playing fast is one thing, but playing fast AND in total control is another. Anything slow is not going to cut it on this roster. The main distinction Fitzpatrick and Keenum, in particular, is that Fitz is doing everything fast and is still in total control. Fitz can see the change that needs to made, voices the changes to the offense and executes. That process is tripping Keenum up at this point. On a 3rd down and ten, he didn't change the play fast enough. O'Brien whistled a delay game penalty and ended the drive on the spot.
...

11. The first offense came back on the field and started a drive heading toward us in the south end zone. Fitzpatrick threw a pass with bad media intentions; that one was taking one of us out. Well, until DeAndre Hopkins skied to high point the rock AND get both feet in bounds for the TD. Each member of the offense sprinted down to the end zone to celebrate with him. I didn't even have to send that one up to the booth, I saw those two feet go "tap, tap" six feet away from me. Hop's been outstanding the past two days with Andre Johnson recovering from injury.
...
13. S Jawanza Starling stood out during a "plus territory" team drill. He read a bootleg perfectly, taking away the TE from the other side of the field on first down. He broke up a pass on third down to force a FG attempt.

14. QB Tom Savage threw what I thought was his best ball of training camp on his drive, the pseudo start of the 2nd half. He drove a curl route to EZ Nwachukwu for a first down to keep his group on the field. A few plays later, RB Dennis Johnson capped the drive, going untouched for a touchdown. A number of good things happened on Savage's drive.

15. The first offense's next drive lasted one play as DeVier Posey got wide open downfield for a catch from Fitzpatrick. I like what Posey has done during camp and can't wait to see what he does this pre-season in preparation for Washington on September 7.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock
I interviewed Rico after the practice & joked if he & JJ Watt could lead all pair of CBs in PBUs. He replied, "We might", serious as hell.

Player of the day from any of the teams made up of "2s" had to be Ricardo "Rico" Mathews. 3 pass breakups, all against the 1s. #Texans

Bouye & Harris both had back to back tight coverage plays that led to incompletions. AJ on Joe Adams & Harris on Lacoltan Bester.

XSF is ready made run blocker. Pass pro still needs tech improvement

Jonathan Grimes had a few solid inside runs today.

Jeoffrey Pagan and CJ Fiedorowicz was a matchup in 11 on 11 that I would pay to watch. Pagan won on a would be sack if play was live.

Back to the OL. This team needs Will Yeatman healthy! He's performed well. The concussion should be a minor setback.

2) I watched Fitz tech during the 30 yd throw. He really had to launch it with his whole body. Explains struggles vs protection issues.

2 notes on Fitz 30 yd "go" throw to Hop.1) Hop elevated & manipulated body lean to bring 2 feet down & in bounds. #Texans

Later Posey beat Mack on a contested in route & then leaves him on the 9. #Texans

DeVier Posey enjoyed having Elbert Mack (try) defending him today. Put a sick double move on Mack for an easy reception. #Texans

Case Keenum had another delay of game today as he was trying to make a read at the line. #Texans

Needless to say, Chris Clemons was able to secure an interception, easily. #Texans

The worst moment of the day, make that in my life of watching football, was when Keenum rolled left & threw the ball back right, down field.

Want to crush a young OT's confidence? Have him face JJ Watt multiple times, like Brice Schwab did today. I wanted to give the kid a hug.

On 1 rep today, Mercilus & Watt both won their edge rush & then slam into each other. Watt was the windshield, Whitney was the mosquito. #Splat

Last year, Andre Johnson & DeAndre Hopkins were Batman & Robin. This year, they'll look like Batman and errr, younger Batman. #Texans

Easiest way to describe who DeAndre Hopkins is for the #Texans this year, over last year, is to talk in superhero lingo, like my boys.

Clowney kept Kendrick Lewis laughing when they were off to the side during stretching & later entertained Foster & Joseph. #Texans

Impression of Jadeveon Clowney today. He was off to the side & his personality is so engaging. Vets seem enamored by him. #Texans

Myers asked each OL member on the series, what they saw & what led to their pickup of the defenders. He stays in sync w/ the unit. #Texans

The guy who impressed me the most today, was Chris Myers. He's truly the QB of the OL. After the TD to Hopkins, he huddled the OL up.

Newton seemed to be fine afterwards and only looked to be shaken up briefly. #Texans. Struggled at LT vs speed as well.

The impact looked fierce, but Newton finished the series off. After the series, he dropped to his knees & was checked on by the staff.

Derek Newton let Paul Hazel (listed 227lbs) blow by him, Newton follows in pursuit & has collision w/ Tim Jamison. #Texans

Derek Newton has look much improved at times, but I wanted to see him against speed on the edge today. I was disappointed, again.

A pass from Fitz' hand to Hopkins, hasn't hit the ground the last 2 days, until Chris McAllister's obvious (uncalled) PI vs Hopkins. #Texans

Ryan called out the Mike, set the WRs & had complete control over what the D showed him. Then threw a 30 yd "Go" to Hop, who makes TD catch.

Fitzpatrick is a vet QB, I expect him to pick apart a skeleton defense loaded up with 2s that are over-matched. No pressure in the pocket.

Fitzpatrick had a stellar day. Him & DeAndre Hopkins are clearly on the same page, but it was false eye candy, today, for Fitz. #Texans

On the flipside, the 2s OLBs (Ankrah & Groves) put a pass rush on the 1s OTs (Brown & Newton) that was non-existent. #Texans

It was nice to see a little peak behind the curtain of what this defense may look like at times in 2014. #Texans

Brooks Reed looked like a mad man out there, floating around, rushing from all over. I saw several overloaded lines that RAC ran at KC.

The team threw the young OTs into the water to sink or swim. Whitney & Brooks held their heads under until they drowned. #Texans

The 3s got minimal work today, but the story of the day was how brutal the 1s OLBs Whitney & Brooks were on the 2/3s OTs (Feiler / Schwab)

The scrimmage consisted mostly of the 1s (off) vs the 2s (def) & vice versa. They also sprinkled in different players to other units.

The most (painfully) apparent thing during the #Texans scrimmage today was the fact that there is no depth at OT or OLB.

Yeatman and Boffeli haven't been out to the field since they both walked to the cart and left on it a few days ago. They need Will back.

O'Brien said, that Yeatman should be back this week and that he had a concussion. Said that they're taking every precaution with him.

O'Brien mentioned other guys who aren't here right now, that could be options at LT as well, when healthy. I asked him about Will Yeatman.

O'Brien went on to say: "Yeah, Newton is an option. There are other guys that are options to." #Texans

"We always have a plan B. Right now there are a number of options, that's one of them." #Texans

I asked O'Brien if Newton was the Plan B left tackle if something were to happen to Duane Brown, his answer was...cont'd

Dunn ran some reps with the 1s in which Derek Newton went to LT & Clabo was the RT, at this point Ben Jones was the center. #Texans

OL coach Paul Dunn was really tinkering with the OL today during the scrimmage to see how he could stretch the depth there. #Texans

Mike Thomas and AJ Bouye both looked good on kick returns today. Alfred Blue was a stud lead blocker on kick returns & guided the returners.

Prosch had a cast on his hand. O'Brien said he'll be back sooner than you think. "As soon as he can be full contact, he'll be ready to go."

#Texans cont'd: Conor Boffeli, Lonnie Ballentine, Johnathan Joseph, Brian Cushing, Louis Nix, Anthony McClung, Kofi Hughes, & Brandon Brooks

Players who didn't practice at #Texans camp today: Jadeveon Clowney, Andre Johnson, Arian Foster, Kendrick Lewis, Akeem Dent, Will Yeatman..

Newton struggling with speed reushers, that is terrible to hear. I hope BOB is smart enough to help him out on that side if that is the case. I wish someone would push Newton out of the starting line up, but it doesn't seem to be the case thus far.

I dunno, but I just wonder if Billy didn't screw the pooch when he used his 33rd pick on an interior offensive lineman instead of an OT ?

They're trying everyone and their brother to find someone to fill that spot. Right now there are 8, count 'em, EIGHT guys on the roster at the OT position per HT.com. One of them is D.B. so that leaves seven guys from which to find a RT.
- Tyson Clabo
- Anthony Dima
- Mike Farrell
- Matt Feller
- Derek Newton
- Brice Schwab
- Will Yeatman
And that's not counting the two that have already been cut this summer (Brennnan Williams and Bryan Witzman).
...they are trying.

Edit:
Damn, as soon as I finished typing the above list I saw this....
#Texans awarded Sam Longo (Dolphins) via waivers. Waive Brice Schwab. Longo is a center, played at Cincinnati.

Never his strong suit. Newt is looking much better -- better bend/pad level. Brought back too soon last year from surgery.

I'd make that selection every time. Sua-Filo was Lance Zierlein's 4th best O'lineman on the board at any position. Run mauler who needs technique work in pass protection. Missed OTAs to graduate, so he's behind.

4 healthy OTs. Likely move an OG over & continue to scan waivers. Dima waived/left team.

Not like we are overloaded with talent at guard.

Brooks is solid, but with Smith gone we are pretty thin there too.

Jones is probably better at Centre.

Some would argue that analytics values interior line play as highly as OT play.

We just signed Sam Longo. Plays OG as well as center. Physically impressive and strong. Excels at run blocking. But a long shot unless he makes some noise from the get go.

That list didn't include Bronson Irwin (who I was getting excited about...)

But, then again I let myself get excited about Tyson Clabo as well, and by all accounts I have been reading that he is NOT the answer...

Any idea to where Irwin stands as of now?

I think we were really hopeful about DQ and Williams making an impact this year.

Without them our OL looks terrible.

Brown and Myers are studs.

Brooks is solid (if he is healthy)

Sua-Filo is RAW

Newton is, well Newton.

Jones is a back-up centre at his best

Clabo may be D O N E

Others are inexperienced and not that good.

Might be a LONG season for Pickspatrick.

The mothership website (which isn't always 100% up-to-the-minute this time of year) has Irwin listed as a OG.

Interesting note: There are eight OTs listed and seven guys listed as either center or guard. :hmmm:

IMO X could play RT if Newton cannot but Fig will be the starter and progressively get better. No one should act surprised that our RT does not do well against speed as he was not good when we drafted him in seventh round. A certain guy name Duane had some issues also. We need X at left guard to solidify along with DB the blind side. Throw Fiedo next to Fig in a power line and we will be fine.

So much for him being an offensive asset if he has to babysit the RT

Does anyone else like how every OL we do pick up is a big mauler type in the run game? They may not be able to pass protect all that good but we will be physical on offense for a change this season!

I know I for one love it. Hopefully they'll be opening up holes big enough to drive a Mack truck through.

Sad... hopefully a new system disguises the weaknesses more than the old system.

wait and see. Newton does not need help every opponent nor even every play. wait and see. Occasionally, Fiedo will line up to block and slip into a passing area and a RB will nick any rush. wait and see.

Slide Fido inside to RT. We have other tight ends who can do a creditable job.
