Takeaways from the @Titans game.

W 9-5.
A bit tense at the end but a nice win on the road against a team 90% of the experts said Titans would win.
Defense still giving up frustrating big plays and lots of 3rd down conversions but held on.
Offense with Fuller on the field is a headache for defenses but still not being used to potential.
Nice to see them bounce back after an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Denver.
Hyde and Stills are great acquisitions for the O and Conley and Roby while not perfect are capable for the D.
Omenihu had a couple nice plays.
Nuk with yet another 100+ yards and a couple of key receptions for 1st downs.
I'll hand it over.

They showed heart today after a disappointing loss. The run where Hyde got stood up and the OLine got behind him and pushed him another 2 yards summed up the game for me. We wanted it more. Got to find a way to keep Fuller healthy - we're too easy to shut down w/out him. Roderick Johnson should be (and should have always been) starting and playing the full game. The OLine looked good today minus Clark. I thought this was their best run blocking to date. We looked like the better running team than Tennessee. Cunningham is a stud. I love watching that guy. Our front 7 was nails shutting down Tennessee's running game early and not letting them get into their game plan (Reader's a beast). Teams have figured out our rollout/dump off to the tight end. Time to draw up a new creative play that works for the next few games and then beat that play into the ground until it is no longer creative. Tennessee has some athletes -- we just beat a pretty good football team.

Titans had the chance to leapfrog us today and could not.
I hope we can continue to show heart - and not flub.
With our win two-lose one pattern, we will make it to the wildcard or divisional round only to get embarrassed on national television. Cal needs to clean house. I’ve seen what I needed to see from O’Brien these past six years. I’ll always root for the home team, but I’ve emotionally detached myself. It’s just another game on tv for me.

Takeaway

I have come to the realization that this coaching only scheme for certain teams. When they played the Ravens and Broncos it seem like the play calling on both sides were vanilla as freakaziod. In this game and against the Patriots we seen creativity by both O’Brien and RAC.

Good win I just wish they would take every game serious.

My takeaways.

The good.

This was a solid road win against one of the hottest teams in the league. The defense & offense both made mistakes but both played good enough to win.

Special teams had a really good game. When was the last time we blocked a field goal?

The bad (at least for me)

This makes the loss against Denver (a 4-8 team we should have manhandled) even worse. We could & should be sitting at 10-4 right now and still in the hunt for the #2 seed.

HOUSTON TEXANS
The Texans played with a single-digit lead for much of the game, and that make the short-yardage situations all the more important. While the offensive line did a fine job of up front, Carlos Hyde appeared to have additional juice in the take on every carry. Hyde carried the team to victory by using up the clock to limiting the opportunities for the Titans’ offense that resulted in over 100 yards on the ground.

Kenny Stills was the early MVP for the Houston offense with a pair of receiving touchdowns during the second quarter. The first came on a crosser with Logan Ryan in coverage, in which Ryan was also called for holding, and the second occurred on a fade for 16 yards with Tye Smith trailing behind. Stills has seen an uptick in usage following some injuries to Will Fuller, and the additional touches carried over upon Fuller’s return.

D.J. Reader was his usual dominant self inside, as he helped hold the Tennessee ground game in check (with the exception of a huge run by TE Jonnu Smith). He had his normal multiple run stops, and continually forced the Titans' RBs to change the POA due to his penetration.

Zach Cunningham was outstanding against the run. He was extremely aggressive to the line of scrimmage, allowing him to take on blockers in the point of attack as well as beat blockers to the ball for multiple run stops.

TENNESSEE TITANS
QB Ryan Tannehill saw almost no pressure in the pocket until the fourth quarter, and played an excellent game as a result. He showed accuracy and velocity to all parts of the field, but was hurt in the first half by a couple of drops by his receivers in the first half, as well as multiple contested catches that did not go Tennessee's way.

Rookie A.J. Brown doesn't look anything like a rookie right now, as he is clearly Tannehill's favorite target. The Texans threw three different cornerbacks at him in man coverage, and none of them could prevent him from consistently moving the chains throughout the day.

The Tennessee defense as a whole played quite well throughout the game. The absence of Adoree’ Jackson is an observable burden, as the secondary, understandably, found difficulty containing DeAndre Hopkins, who surpassed 100 receiving yards, yet again. Other than the touchdown allowed to Kenny Stills, slot CB Logan Ryan played a solid game throughout with a handful of defensive stops.

On the defensive line, Kamalei Correa recorded a couple splash plays that included defeating RT Chris Clark for a sack of Deshaun Watson. Jeffery Simmons made his presence felt with defensive stops against the run, and batting a pass that ended up in the hands of Jayon Brown for one of the two interceptions forced

Here is a good illustration of Watson's first INT. He was looking right and then threw late to the left. Great play and disguise by the Titans defense, but I still don't like Hopkins and Fuller's route.

Watson's first option is far right and then has to come back and scan far left. If Johnson was just a decoy, where is the option in the middle of the field? Seem like Fuller should have been running a slant.

100% where I am. I watched maybe 10 minutes of the game today. Hung out with my girlfriend and daughter instead. Living in NE Ohio, it's a reddit game for me.

I’ve have never seen that technology on screen for breaking down plays, probably been around for years but new to me, lol. Very cool

Well that went poorly.

We got burned by the cross over the shoulder pass play multiple times, including twice for touchdowns. We really missed Adoree Jackson's speed today since we didn't have the speed of keeping up with Houston's receiving corp, specifically Hopkins. especially if Watson was extending the play with his feet.

We weren't great in stopping the run attack on Carlos Hyde. Needs to be better next time.

We in Nashville remember watching Zach Cunningham in his days at Vanderbilt. He's a great defensive player for you...not a surprise to us who have followed his career.

Ryan Tannehill played an ok game, just like Watson...both of them had pretty much the same stats.

For two teams so well matched, the difference today were the special plays. Tannehill nearly had a TD to Firksir, it got popped out at the goal line, intercepted and run back 84 yards setting up a TD for Houston. That was a 14 point swing (7 points for Houston, 7 points the Titans didn't get).

And finally, this was the first game in the Tannehill era where our kicking game actually killed us. Succop's 45 yard kick was blocked since it was so low that my wife would have gotten skin on it. He's hurting the team now and I don't know how we solve this so late in the season. If we got that extra 3 points, we're talking overtime, not playing from behind at the end of the game.

You really believe this?

Funny how he only good games BOB calls are when the Texans win.

Looks to me like:
1. Watson wanted to throw the ball quickly, he didn't set up properly and kinda pushed the ball and didn't have enough mustard on it.
2. There wasn't any disguise; Vaccaro was moving back before the ball was snapped.
3. That shouldn't have been an INT, just an incompletion. Our guy should have been able to at least break it up.

My takeaway is that for Pete’s sake O Brien ..... LEAVE RODERICK AT RIGHT TACKLE AND CUT CLARK AND NEVER LET HIM SEE THE FIELD AGAIN!!!!! ....... how can you not see that....... secondly this defense has playmakers on the back end now ...... but no pass rush up front ..... it use to be we had pass rush and sorry secondary...... so if we can somehow get some push up front consistently I think this defense will look night and day difference.... I think either we have to play this Martin kid more or sign somebody as a pass rush specialist ..... we could really finally be consistent...... Nick Perry is sitting home on a couch right now..... wouldn’t hurt to kick the tires on him to rush opposite merciles and have our secondary make plays on rushed and bad passes from time to time

And their coach

He's not going to agree to that simple fact. All he wants to do is dump on Watson.

Oh and Steel yes that's what I believe the case is now. The proof is in the darn pudding, go back and look at the games.

Offensively: we were not running none of these misdirection plays against the Ravens and Broncos.

Defensively: we were not playing a lot of bump and run. And for darn sure wasn't getting after the QB in those games. Now against the Broncos game we tried to bring the heat early on and got burnt. But we wasn't pressing like we were today.

Dude, you really think that the Texans bipolar play this year has nothing to do with Obrien?

Not nothin

g

But DW4 has been bipolar during games.

Like today for instance.

Difference is today they happened to win. If they had lost the fire BOB thread would've been fired up.

I thought BOB called a great team today.

Would you agree that the last 5 games.

Balt- DW4 played like Crap
Colts- DW4 was avg and they were lucky to win. If the 2 dropped INT's happened they would've lost.
Pats- Played great
Broncos- Sucked a**, but a team loss, including BOB.
Tacks- You tell me what you think? Not good enough to win in the playoffs. IMHO

Watson had a below average game today but he has played well for the most part this year. On the other hand, Obrien has been out coached and out schemed in every loss this this year by a mile. His teams are unprepared, lost and have a deer in the headlights look way too many times. Even the win at home against the Jags he got outcoached. He has struggled against two rookie qbs this year and one who basically is a rookie (Allen) and he made one of them look like he was the reincarnation of joe montana.

A quick :tiphat:for all that went right in a must win game IMO. However, as much as I like Watson he just had too many errors. The INT to Vacarro was just a ridiculous decision and the second one to pass within ten yard line was just too stupid. I'm willing to wait for OBrien to come out tomorrow and say it was his play not #4 but it sure looked ridiculous the way Hyde was toting the rock. As my friend tried to defend him saying pass was deflected, I replied "could not been deflected if it was not in the air." From @riversmccowen
Deshaun Watson: "Outside of those two dumb picks by me ... we definitely played some good smart football."

Watson throws a pass behind TE Fells (IIRC) that hits back of his shoulder. Not a high yardage play but added to the other bad throws like the one that bounced in front of Hop who hit the turf to try to make it look close. The sack over Clark should have been avoidable. Watson knows his right side blocking is week and as he calls play in huddle he should think "I better watch out or I am going to get hit..." . I am not a fan of Clark as Johnson should be starting but jeez Louise!

Denver was a horrible game and I did not see vs Titans what I needed to for me to change my mind on trading Watson this off season for the deal I mentioned elsewhere.

I think RAC had a poor day with his play calling over all.

Good comments on Rod Johnson & Chris Kringle (give those QB sacks gifts) er..Clark. Martin could be our pass rushing OLB of the future but we still need someone to replace a disappointing to me Mercilus who had one great play today in several games. May Merci have mercy on us and turn down any Texans offers to extend and take himself away. I want third round comp for him. BTW want to see Doc's reports this week on how bad injuries to Jacob Martin and McKinney are. Reid took a beating too.

Terrell Suggs and Janoris Jenkins--come to papa!

To be far other than the game with the Saints which games have we lost where Watson had a good game? Even the Saints game OB didn’t get out coached the defense. I will agree that even in some of the wins the team hasn’t looked good, today was a prime example.

I'm not liking the blocking scheme or how they teach the players to block on the 2nd INT by Watson.
The RB, especially, needs to carry out the ball fake.
To have him stop quickly to block, or to block at all, defeat the whole purpose of the play action.
When too many defenders don't buy it, the result is seldom good for the offense.

Might as well go with the ZBS instead of trying to be cute and pull the LG (who, BTW, didn't finish his block - another cue for the D). The other guys also need to drive harder on their block.
But the RB was the big fail.
Either a poor play design or poor teaching.

The only game I think Watson lost for us is the road game in Indy. Many can say that he costs us the Panthers game too but I think that was just Riverboat Ron figured out Bobs offense that day. The Saints loss I blame the defense. The Ravens and Broncos loss I blame those two squarely on BOB and Romeo for not having any gameplan on either side of the ball.

I'm not going to change your mind

Allen has actually looked very good this yr.

Why you want to talk about RAC this way.

BTW, I thought RAC had a great game today.

Ravens are the better team, but DW4 was awful.

Broncos was a team failure starting with BOB. It was to be expected after the Pats game. Also DW4 sucked that game.

Why isn't Jonnu Smith the best TE in the game? The guy seems to always make big plays against the Texans. He's extremely fast! He seems to have the skillset to be one of the better TEs in the game.

Still not sure why people on this board think that Watson and OB aren’t able to both suck in the same game at the same time. This Watson vs O’Brien thing is so stupid and doesn’t seem to get applied to any other teams.

No one is saying that OB or RAC had good games against Broncs or Ravens but that doesn’t mean Watson didn’t have bad games there to.

At this point I really do wish they’d fire OB because the bias on this board has made this place a dumpster fire. Every post is the same thing just slightly worded different.

At this point we have beaten more dead horses than a glue factory.

My take is that we have no business being in the playoffs. We’re weak at HC/OC/GM, pretty much setup to fail.

My take was …. Damn We're doomed to the same fate again next year.

Another 9-7 or 10-6 …. get in the playoffs and maybe win the wildcard game then get curbstomped in the divisional round , rinse repeat.

The Titans did Texans Fans no favors today.
