Daym. Russel Wilson's interview here is phenomenal.

It is like that ending didn't just happen. Takes the blame for the play - says Coach Carroll apologised to them, but it isn't Coach's fault. Classy fellow.

I would have been at least choked and down - he seemed pretty chipper and ready to go again.

However much I dislike Pete Carroll and most of that team, I admire the hell out of Russell Wilson.

Not as dumb of a play call as I originally thought. They only had one timeout left. If Lynch doesn't get in on the next play, they have to take their last timeout. That makes 3rd down a must pass situation since they can no longer stop the clock. Trying a pass play on 2nd not as bad of a decision as I initially thought.

The big "if" in that scenario is if Lynch doesn't make the yard in two attempts. He was moving the pile the whole game. Odds were very good he'd score.

I agree. Odds were very good that he'd walk into the end zone on the very next year play. But let's hypothetically say the Pats stop him for no gain and the Seahawks call a timeout with ~20 seconds left. It's 3rd down and no timeouts, you'd actually consider running the ball again on 3rd down? That's extremely risky.

At the least I'd go with my strength the first play. I'd probably run him twice, but I'm not going to held responsible for my "decision". :)

In the end, it was a great game.

dumbest play call I have ever seen in Super Bowl history, bar none.

You have 4 feet to cross the goal line, one of, if not the best RB that produces YAC in the league, not to mention is a Beast and you throw a slant route...

The isn't enough face palms in the world to cover this travesty..

looking back it says

Run him or fake run him with a FB handoff do they have a FB ..?????

timeout

Desgin QB run fake it to Lynch and have Wilson take off

4th down then u pass it if all else fails

I agree that the call was too cute. They should have tried to push Lynch in once more before burning the t.o. and regrouping, but that doesn't make this the polyps-inducing call many fans are making it out to be. It wasn't Chris Webber. In fact, Butler isn't getting enough credit for making a jail break steal of the ball there. He's any more lax on that play and the ball likely hits the ground and things just roll on. Fans are just a combination of so blindly emotional, never wrong in their critical hindsight, and get so wrought with the wrath of the crowd around them that they're calling this the worst call in the history of the word "call".

It'll calm down and they should remember it was in fact a great super bowl.

how epic would that have been if Wilson faked throw it to that reciver then tuck it and haul ass into the left corner Pilawn

It's not really hindsight when almost everyone watching the game is calling for Lynch to bang it in.

You're on the 1 yd. line....

You've got a guy whose nickname is "beastmode"...who currently has 104 yards in the game rushing already and is one of the best rb's in the game for YAC......

A qb who had over 800 yds rushing on the season and is known for his elusiveness....

you've also got a TO left.....

Those 4 variables alone necessitate you run the ball there....it was the dumbest playcall in SB history.....period....His O-coordinator should be fired for that call.

If you insist on passing it at least do it off of a zone read play where you make the defense think you're gonna run it...instead they threw it to.....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................a guy named Ricardo Lockette?

The photo of Richard Sherman's reaction is forever embedded in internet meme lore.

Anyone who knows me around this forum, will tell you that I don't care much for those who constantly whine about the play-calling. And I especially don't care for that "thinks he's smarter than everyone else" overuse.

So when you read me saying it was a bad play call, that's pretty damn bad.

Seattle has long had some of the best fans in the NFL even back in the ground Chuck days . They also have the loudest and biggest home field advantage . Seattle biggest advantage is they have female cheerleaders .

I tried to tell him that long ago. Told him Seattle has had a strong fanbase since the Jim Zorn/Steve Largent days.
....his mind is made up, don't bother him with facts.

A bit late to point this out, but since brady was 0-2 in superbowls against the giants and 3-0 against not-the-giants I feel like the pats were a good pick for this one :D

I'm also happy that the seahawks and their "noone believed in us and we showed them" attitude didn't win their second SB in a row.

You mean the world doesn't revolve around College Station ? Johnny College Football has learned this lesson in a harsh fashion .

As far as the play goes , Bill dictated to Pete what to do . I think Bill knew the odds were against him stopping Lynch and maybe Pete would bite . Bill ended up foul hooking the biggest fish in a bass contest .

No, it was an extremely dumb play call. They had 2nd & goal at the 1-yardline with a minute left. They ran damn near 40 seconds off before they snapped the ball. If they snap that ball with 30-35 seconds instead of 20 seconds they are guaranteed three chances to get it in running the football.

It was such a great game,

Shame it turned into a "Seattle lost it" vs. New England won at the end.

Man, that catch...

Kinda like when the Texans play a close game and lose it at the end...no one ever seems to appreciate the "greatness" of the game...it's all win or lose, all the time baby!!

Best Superbowl game of all time? At least in my own life of watching football definitely.

The real genius on that last play is this:
After Lynch was stopped on 1st down, there was around a minute left in the game. Everyone wanted Belichick to call timeout, me included. By not calling timeout, the clock kept running and this meant the Seahawks were more likely to pass so if it wasn't successful, they could try a run on 3rd down and still have time for a 4th down play. If the Pats had called timeout that would have left Seattle enough time to run it on the rest of the downs and have enough timeouts to conserve the clock if they were short.

I was thinking the exact same thing about Belichick taking a time out.

I wasn't until this morning when I started thinking about it that I started to realize the genius of Belichick. He called timeouts in his two SB losses to the Giants, but this time, he decided to let the Seahawks worry about the clock along with everything else they had to think about. He put in his goalline package and forced the Seahawks to readjust their strategy. They had so many things to balance that mistakes - like that playcall - would be more likely if under pressure of time. It turns out that Belichick was brilliant with the way he handled the end of the game.

I know most think it is a given that Lynch scores a TD if they run it, but goalline stands are famous in the NFL. He could have been stuffed, forcing the Seahawks to use the time out and have one play to run on third down.

Great Super Bowl! Definitely up there with the best of them as a football fan.

Everyone indulge me for sec. Go back and tell me what was the first thing that came to your mind when Wilson threw that interception.

Mine was "Why didn't he hand it off to Lynch"?

To me, it was just that simple. Over-analyzing it just makes it complicated. When it doesn't need to be.

By the same token, if the Seahawks had scored on that play NOBODY would have asked why didn't they hand it off to Lynch.

Game of inches, man, and mistakes are always second-guessed.

One thing I wondered is why did Butler get out of the end zone instead of taking the knee for a touchback. Good thing it didn't turn into a negative.

While true DB, I'm with Marcus on this one...For me it was a foregone conclusion that they were going to run the ball with either Lynch or Wilson. When they got to the 1, I actually started calculating how much time was going to be left for the Patriots to mount a drive. It just never entered my mind that they would actually chance a TO and throw the ball...

Oh, don't get me wrong, I agree with Marcus overall. I said the same thing about why didn't they run Lynch up the gut when Wilson threw the pick. Seemed like a no-brainer.

It did for him....go find that pic that shows the gruesome nature of his broken arm in that game.... and as far as the team, it hurt them in the long run. Edelman's go ahead TD was over his replacement and they picked on him all 4th qtr......

That was Lane for the Seahawks early, not Butler for the Pats late

edit: I see you edited... nvrmnd

That's true but you have to consider the makeup of the team as well. You've got a 1st round superstar RB behind an OL built "the way the Texans should have done it" with 2 1sts and 2 2nds v. an undrafted WR who in 4 years in the league hasn't totalled 400 yds.

He was so close to the end zone marker he probably didn't want to risk kneeling and accidentally getting a safety. Also in that situation your immediate reaction is to run forward.

Yeah when I saw the replay his foot was outside the goal line while his other foot was in the end zone when he intercepted the ball. Don't know what the rule is there if he would have taken a knee.
