RS has rarely drafted much outside of draftnik consensus on where players will go. Montgomery is probably the biggest exception iirc.
He didn't participate at combine because of both knee and shoulder issues. On the field he was inconsistent and never received all conference honors. His twitter account was ALL professional wrestling, not a peep about his team or football. Any one of those reasons alone, ok, just alot reasons not to draft him. Overall I think Rick has done better than most, that pick in particular was bad for a 3rd rounder.
Anybody can do a consensus draft, Good GM's go by their own evals. With scouts recommendations. I now understand why RS is good in the 1st rd and hit or miss their after. This thought process is why the Texans roster building is so bad and not likely to get better under RS.
I'm pretty familiar with Hill. On talent, he is a first round CB in my book. I think he's in the discussion for best CB in the country. He's phenomenal in zone but he's no slouch at all in man. He literally erases half the field for the Texas pass defense. And he's a plus run defender for his position also.
Texas plays mostly zone because their DC loves to zone blitz. But the two games they went heavy man were against the top two WRs in the Big XII so they could keep Hill locked onto those guys all game.
Denzel Mims from Baylor has 8 TDs in ten games and averages 100 yards per game. Against Hill he finished 4-42. Baylor scored 7 points. James Washington from Oklahoma St has 9 TDs in ten games and averages 116 yards per game. Against Hill he finished 4-32. OSU scored 10 points in regulation, 3 more in OT.
The only teams that really tried to test him were Maryland and San Jose St in the first two games of the season. He snagged a pick six in each.
Now to the bad. Despite being All-Conference as a true freshman, he was benched for most of his sophomore year for consistently clashing with his position coach. It can be conceded that his position coach was terrible at his job, but Hill reportedly openly disrespected him in front of the entire position group on multiple occasions. And he has reportedly failed three drug tests for pot in the last five months, leading to his current suspension.

I would have zero fear of the unknown, if I thought they would even look at my resume.
Here is a list of the top 10 Tackles from Great Blue North draft report, which has been around practically since Al Gore invented the internet. An average of 9 Tackles have gone in the first 100 picks over the past 5 drafts. I would guess that most of the guys 7-10 would be available to the Texans. So anyway SteelB who do you see at the top of the class in OTs in the 2018 Draft ? Of course I realize these are prospects we won't have a shot at unless the Texans put together an impressive package of draftpicks/players to move up into the first round ?

I'm liking these 5 trench guys:
1. Frank Ragnow (C/OG- Arkansas)
2. Jamarco Jones (OT- Ohio St)
3. Mike Gesicki (TE- Penn St)
4. Bentley Spain (OT- North Carolina) **The other OT at NC**
5. Brendon Mahon (OG- Penn St)
The Texans will be going into the 2018 season with many holes and neglect on the OL and at TE.
I'm beginning to feel that Martin is the only quality (Based on the the Texans quality on OL) starter entering 2018 and he now dealing with a serious ankle injury late in the season...not good. Mancz is going back to C, so it will be interesting to see if he can deliver this go round...if not, he could be re-signed for quality depth or bridging purposes.
Fiedorowicz should probably hang up his cleats and call it a career. The group of Fido, Griffin and Anderson has been a let down. Fido can't stay healthy, Griffin can't block not catch the ball consistently and Anderson can't block nor catch the ball consistently. Is Anderson really playing out of position?
In both cases, the Texans have the cap space to sign Greg Robinson (LT- Detroit) and a veteran TE to short term prove-it type contracts. They would both have the opportunity to resurrect their careers or bridge the gap for the 2018/2019 draftees. I would rather see the Texans shallow-pocket these 2 FA's versus going out and deep-pocketing mediocre FA OT's who are going to cash in on stupid contracts b/c of the weak FA Class.
This is why I think this OL class is so deep...
...that it makes no sense to trade away 3rd round picks.
I think the draft is deep enough in regards to OL that I would hold the picks. I definitely wouldn't trade any picks from the 2019 NFL Draft to move up in this draft...not this draft wouldn't be worth it but to trade a pick or 2 from 2019 would continue the mistake of robbing Peter to pay Paul.
The depth of this upcoming draft could put the Texans in a position to trade back in both the RD3-5 and RD4-5 as long as their targets are still on the board. They could move back 3-4 spots in both rounds and probably pick up additional RD4 and/or RD5 picks along the way. Yeah, I'd prefer to stock up on a couple of picks for this draft and/or 2019. Bottom line, the Texans need a GM who would be savvy enough to make hay, even out of a crap situation like this.
Currently, the Texans first pick in the 3rd round would fall at #70. I went to some draft sites to find their top rated OT at or after pick #70:
GBN Draft Report - Jamarco Jones - Ohio State
Walter Football - Mitch Hyatt - Clemson
NFL Draft Scout - Jamarco Jones - Ohio State
Drafttek - Orlando Brown - Oklahoma
CBS Sports - Joseph Noteboom - TCU
Do you have a pretty good idea of what picks we will have ?
I want a guard and two OTs + a safety and a corner; problem is I'm in love with Josie Jewell as ILB/Olb. His stats at Iowa are amazing and consistent last 2 seasons. In 11 games 123 tackles, 13.5 TFL with 11 passes broken up, 4.5 sacks, 3 QBs and a forced fumble. He is 6'2" and just finds the passing lanes. I am happy with Mckinney, Cunningham and Cole inside and if Watt is healthy I can see Clowney at OLB with a healthy Mercilus but Cush is prob gone. I think Jewell is perfect but is he needed enough to use high third? Chances are he will be gone but if there wow for me hard not to get him. I am also hoping Braden Smith falls also to third; but then I am greedy.
The depth at QB, WR, RB and DB in this draft might create some excitement in both RD3 and RD4 if the right player is still available. If the Texans could finagle a couple of deals and come away with 6 picks in RD's 3-5....it could pay nice dividends down the road.
You do understand who is going to be making those picks? Do you really think a positive result will happen?
Hate to say this but seems Texans (ownership) stays the course. They like themselves too much. Rick will be here long after O’Brian is gone. We all live in our own little dream world thinking Texans will make change and get it right but Year after year we’re let down. Can’t hold coaches medical staff, players or agents accountable for injury’s incured over normal course of paid services.
Three major failings I see since before Rick took charge are, maximizing draft allotments (draft slot leveraging) settling for BPA approach, acquisition of NFL free agents and retention of own free agents to be.
Texans have a nice job of finding and bringing in unsigned, undrafted prospects and developing them. Having said that I would be thrilled with a specific positional emphasis on improving OL to support Watson going forward then finding weapons to develop on the cheap, like New England has done, because you gotta do a better job protecting the franchise. Since Rick traded away two drafts to acquire that franchise player, the next two should focus on surrounding him with protection.
Your mock draft is a good start, headed in the right direction![]()
We are in total agreement, (Shocking)
Sad thing is Ricky's so entrenched that Ricky will survive even if McNair dies.
Sunday's game with the Terrible Towels should be an eye opener for the McNair's though. Along with the Andre Ring of Honor day. If Ricky stays I see more fans like myself selling my tickets to opposing teams so I dont lose my PSL $$$$.
Unfortunately the PSL $$$$ looks like a sunk cost.
Can we stop mentioning the Browns as some paragon of ownership and responsibility?
yeah, the greatest thing I like about Browns is they are much worse than Texans..at least for now.Can we stop mentioning the Browns as some paragon of ownership and responsibility?

If the Texans had kept Ricky and the Browns hiring Dorsey I would've bet that the Browns would've passed the Texans up. With a new GM coming in who knows. But Watson has to stay healthy or the Texans are screwed regardless of who the new GM/HC is.
Exactly. See Colts, Packers, Cardinals, 49ers.Can't you say that about every franchise? if 'x' isn't healthy we're doomed? Finally the Texans have a QB that can fill that role
Why do you keep assigning so much importance to LG when we still don't have a clue about what to do at either OT position in '18 ?After watching the East-West Shrine game, if I was Gaine I would
1. Sign Norville in FA
2. Trade a 2019 4th that could turn into a 2019 2nd based on snaps played. Glenn currently is owed 3 yrs 23 mil on his contract. He finished the season on IR with foot/ankle issues but it's reported he will be ready for OTA's.
3. Draft Jeff Noteboom in the 3rd. Your new RG
4. Draft Zack Crabtree in the 3rd. Your new RT.
OL LT Glenn, LG Norville, C Martin RG Noteboom RT Crabtree
A young talented OL.

Is this still 1.0?
No one thinks Davenport won’t make a big jump in 2018? Often the biggest improvement is between the rookie and 2nd year.
I sure hope he does, maybe he'll hit the weight room and really bulk up and improve his strength & stamina. He's already got the natural athleticism and the length to play the position. No one thinks Davenport won’t make a big jump in 2018? Often the biggest improvement is between the rookie and 2nd year.
