State of the O-line

We might not want to follow the Colts' model. it took 7 years and near career homicide of their QB before they finally put together a plus OL.

I think this GM (Ballard) has only been there one or two years and the coach and staff only one for sure! And remember, the coach, Reich wasn't even they're first selection as coach. They had to scramble when McDaniels reneged on his deal and left the Colts hanging. They took a wreck of a team and have molded it into a very good playoff team that could go a long way. Not many superstars on the team except Luck and Hilton but just a solid all around team that is young and plays very well.

Amazing what you can do with a top tier QB behind a solid Oline.

While the tackle position was still very much an issue for Houston,Zach Fultonand a healthyNick Martinbrought some competency to their pass blocking. Fulton earned a 79.1 pass-blocking grade on the season while Martin was at 80.9.

No that's hardly loud praise for the Texans' Oline unit but I appretiate any and all compliments no matter how modest I see and suggesting we've perhaps got 2 of the 5 pieces needed for a competent group is something worth reporting.

1 veteran LT and 2 rookie OT’s, like Risner and Hyatt and I Think the interior will be just fine.

2018 Texans review: Offensive line
Aaron Wilson , Houston Chronicle Jan. 8, 2019 Updated: Jan. 9, 2019 4:43 p.m.

.............................The Texans moved on from draft bust Xavier Su'a-Filo and veteran journeymen Chris Clark and Breno Giacomini. And Gaine signed three new starters in right tackle Seantrel Henderson, who broke his ankle in the season opener against the New England Patriots, right guard Zach Fulton ($28 million), who provided mostly solid play, and left guard Senio Kelemete ($12 million), an undersized, frequently injured, feisty lineman who would ideally be a key backup.

Julie'n Davenport was brought back as the starting left tackle and he struggled mightily early in the season and led the team with 15 penalties. The former fourth-round draft pick from Bucknell has ideal size with long arms and improving strength. He has potential, but doesn't look talented enough in terms of mobility, skill and drive blocking to be a long-term solution at a critical position where he's tasked with protecting Watson's blind side.

The Texans were forced to insert Kendall Lamm at right tackle when Henderson got hurt. The former undrafted free agent from Appalachian State battled, but was overwhelmed by more athletic players. He went through some cringe-worthy moments, including being launched into the air once against the Colts in the regular season and landing on top of running back Lamar Miller in the backfield. Lamm is an unrestricted free agent.

Center Nick Martin is the only lineman on the roster with a pedigree in terms of a lot of predicted success. The former Notre Dame All-American is the highest drafted offensive lineman on the roster as a former second-round draft pick. And he's the younger brother of Cowboys Pro Bowl offensive guard Zack Martin.

Martin is the safest bet to keep his job and develop into an even more reliable player. He didn't dominate, but Martin has upside.

Texans coach Bill O'Brien has consistently praised offensive line coach Mike Devlin, so it doesn't look like he'll be blamed for the terrible pass protection. In fairness, Watson does hold the football too long at times and create some of the elevated sack numbers.

"There's a lot of things that go into a sack," O'Brien said. "I've said that, and it's the truth. There's obviously offensive linemen maybe getting beat, or we miss a hot, we miss a sight adjust, the quarterback doesn't get rid of the ball on time, the receiver runs the wrong route. So there's a lot that goes into the sacks.

"The big thing is evaluate the roster. Every year the roster's different just by the nature of the draft and free agency and all those different things. We're not near there yet. We'll begin that process, though, right away this week."

On the roster, the Texans have a few options. One is promoting Martinas Rankin, a third-round draft pick from Mississippi State, and having him replace Lamm or Kelemete. Rankin didn't look very good at left tackle when he briefly played there.

Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Ja'Wuan James is a name to keep in mind when free agency starts.

Ole Miss offensive tackle Greg Little and Alabama lineman Jonah Williams aren't expected to last long in the first round, but Oklahoma standout Cody Ford could be available when the Texans are on the clock with the 23rd overall pick.

O'Brien indicated he would prefer to build through the draft than free agency.

"I don't think you want to build it through free agency," the coach said. "That's my personal belief. You want to build it through the draft so you can mold the guys."

My guess is Gaine will try to build this O-line through the draft piece by piece and supplement the gaps (weak areas) with FA's. This is nothing new and all teams, I would think, do this to some extent to bolster their whole roster. It may take a few years to build the O-line the way you want it because you will always have your misses in the draft and FA (See XSF) but hopefully Gaine can find the right pieces within the next year or two. Personally, I'm still hoping for some marked improvement from both Davenport and Rankin that they will be able to at least provide some kind of depth for the O-line.

Why do ya'll continue to think Gaines will build this and that. No no no Obrien and Gaines will try to acquire players to hopefully fit the offensive scheme we're trying to employ.

The offensive line needs continuity more than anything. You can't expect to trot out a new line every freaking year. Especially when this coach wants this high tech offensive scheme.

Me and you could be part of their offensive line for a 100 years and have great continuity. We'd still get our azz kicked cause we don't have enough talent.

Talent- could be important.

Get some.

False

New England win SB with lesser talent all the freaking time.

Yall use this talent copout too much around these parts. 11-5 in the NFL and your talking about we didn't have enough talent. Stop the madness, it's the freaking coaching for crying out loud

Now we're using the inexperienced excuse now. Lol

Again Bill Obrien and staff should've had a better game plan.

What game plan is going to help Watson hit an open Hopkins in the EZ from the 9 yd line. What gameplan is going to help V. Smith catch a long bomb on a well thrown ball? The best ball Watson threw all day. IMHO

People use new England as a copout all the time. Trouble is we dont have the greatest qb and coach of all time on our team.

Oh, and their ol is better then ours.

LT - 7th round FA
LG - 3rd
C - UDFA
RG - 4th
RT - 5th

Or they were coached up/schemed better, and BB isn't coaching the OL.

We allowed 41 more sacks then new England this year and they had almost 70 more pass attempts. There's a lot more to grading offensive lines then just sack numbers but that stat is pretty telling.

I don't think anyone's arguing we shouldn't coach them up better but I dont think Devlin is going anywhere this offseason and I know OB isn't. So we're left begging and pleading for more talent.

Their line could all be undrafted - lt was better than ours.

Don't pass the ball too darn much.
The Texans ranked 8th during the season in rushing.
They ran the ball 35 times in the 37-34 win against the Colts (33 in regular time).

Bwhahaha is that right!!!! We're in trouble if he actually listened to us.

So what is your actual agenda here? You want better coaching we aren't going to get and would rather have continuity then add offensive talent.

You want to ignore the ol in free agency and the draft? Wtf kinda plan is that?

I still can't believe all the called runs for Watson against Jacksonville. And then to find out it was a decoy! LOL we risked our franchise QB for a decoy that didn't work a lick the next week... it just gets funnier and funnier.
OB should have been fired for that as well.

:smiliepalm:

What does the board think Trent Brown is going to command in free agency? I originally preferred Donovan Smith but am now leaning toward Brown and either David Edwards, Cody Ford, Jawaan Taylor, or Greg Little (in that order) in the first round. I just want to bully other teams next season on the ground and then go over the top with Hopkins and Fuller (and hopefully the Jordans too). Brown/Rankin/Martin/Fulton/1st Rounder with Davenport as swing OT/jumbo TE and Kelemete & Mancz being IOL depth.

I was madder then a hornet at all the called runs for Watson that day. If you (OB) ain't smart enough to figure out a way to beat the Jags without running Watson, you should be on the next bus out of town.

I don't have an agenda. Again we have addressed the oline every year since Obriens arrival. Why can't you as well as other understand dude system is flawed. And his coaching staff on that side just doesn't know how to coach up players.

I thought my previous post was clear. Most of the people clamoring for ol help understand the coaching sucks.

But the coaching isnt changing this offseason.

So how do we fix the problem?

Add more talent.

I'm betting on at least 2 new starters next year.

Now if they take someone high and then there is a report of moving him around the line, be on the lookout for a little black car screaming off 71 onto 10. Pull me over because I'm headed to jack up Devlin and/or OB.

I'm not saying ob wont ***** it up. Just more talent gives a better chance.

Why wait on Devlin? Do it now , I'll escort you with lights blazing.

It doesn't fix the problem because our coaching is that bad. The system Obrien is employing to me is very flawed.

The problem can be fixed with a new OC and new offensive line coach. Run the same system instead of switching it up every game.

Ha! We are trained in Title 19 so if he's smuggled any cheese or avocados, I got his ass!

Ok, so here it is. We run a heat style stop on Devlin. Cak runs a rented truck in front of Devlin causing an accident. Mysteriously, I'm on scene at the time of the wreck. During the accident investigation dev's DL, insurance, and ss card go missing after he's turned it over to me. I call Austin with concerns he may be illegal. Austin and I both make a couple of more calls and any record of citizenship vanishes. Dev is put in an ice van and whisked away. Mysteriously, dev's car is impounded and found to have a trunk load of avacados and beastiality porn (all colts ofcourse.)

He screams "no collusion" as he's driven toward the border.

Cak has a headache after the accident and Austin's on shutdown so I buy the beers afterward.

Say when.

:clap:I'm in! Let me know when we can manage this. Just in case, I might have some "throw down" stuff I can bring and "find" in his glove box. And since he can't prove his citizenship, we drive him to the border for an expedited removal.
We stop at one of the local High Schools down here on the way back and pilfer its OC and O Line coach to take back. We all drink and the Texans will be in the Superb Owl next year!
