State of the O-line

I don't know about that - cant say that they liked one or the other more because they only had a shot at one of them , never had a choice to make between them. All we can do is speculate on that ..

They had a choice if they wanted Mahomes it just would have cost twice as much.

You may be right. Alex Gibbs felt that he could get the guys he needed in the 4th, 5th and 6th Rounds and coach them up. He usually did and for the most part Gibbs' teams were usually #1 or #2 in rushing. I remember one of my biggest disappointments after O'Brien was hired was his choice for OL Coach.
Love this post. The key here is that Gibbs was good, no EXCELLENT, at what he did which was coaching the zone blocking scheme. He knew exactly what characteristics to tell the scouts to look for and wouldn't stand for the GM/scouts bringing him someone he didn't sign off on. I don't see a grand plan from O'Brien

And why would you? He comes in with a reputation of more of a power rushing scheme and then 1st known choice goes after Ferentz for OL coach, a straight up ZBS guy. Then he gets a junior grade ZBS guy from Atlanta. Meanwhile each year he moves more and more away. Nobody can put coaches on RS, or playcalling.

I just coach whoever they give me.

Signed,
O'Brien

P.S.
You know, I never have a good QB to work with. Why can't they find a Brady's clone for me?

Alex Gibbs is the Nick Saban, Bill Belichick of OL Coaches.

Sure they did .... but I don't believe they expected KC (or anyone else) to make that jump when they have an established QB that's arguably top 8-10. (Reid must have really liked what he saw to make that jump up / pick).

They have a history of letting teams jump ahead of them for quarterbacks .... and not seeing it coming.

notoriously cheap allows others to overpay and move in front of them more like it. A true franchise QB is worth, well the franchise.

That being said , with their sense of urgency .... how did they really feel about going forward with Savage ?! If they truly believed in him , would they have had such a sense of urgency ?!

I think Ricky and Cal and Bob McNair had a sense of urgency while OB had faith in himself and Savage. Watson was the result. I'm sure OB would have rather had a choice about which QB to take but that was not possible thanks to Chi and KC. It was such a poor draft for offensive tackles and QB's that there really wasn't a right way to go to address the needs of the team. I t

Tells you that they've never put the right value on QB's. Kubiak could get better than what was expected from a QB so it wasn't a concern until the last few years and OB thinks he can do the same but it's obvious he can't. McNair had to demand a QB and FA route was a disaster worse than HWNSNBM so he pressured to have the draft fix things. Savage starting the season is the compromise between OB and the McNairs

Agree... but something changed under Kubiak's tenure. For whatever reason McNair took the QB decision out of Kubiak's hands. It's easy for me to blame Kubiak, he should have let Yates throw the ball against SF. But he may have been obstinate due to Rick extending Schaub in the first place.

I know McNair runs his mouth, but I doubt he says anything he hasn't heard in his weekly pow wow with Rick & Billy. We need a QB. We've been begging for one since the Lisfranc.

We had the #1 overall, Luck decided to stay in school. We had it again, Mariota decided to stay in school.

Nobody wanted Connor Cook or Bryce Petty... we're running out of time.

Savage starting the season is the compromise between OB and the McNairs

I really don't think Bob would force Billy to be here if he doesn't want to be here. It's not good for business. McNair understands, I think, the importance of perfect alignment to an organization's success.

I think O'Brien, Smith, & McNair decided to get a QB. Just like Veach & Reid decided to get a QB.

I think they set criteria for what had to happen before they start Watson. Having a strong team is most likely one of them. No Duane Brown, Hop, Fuller, Braxton all hurt, not practicing, Blue (our best backfield protector) not practicing...

Right now the team isn't strong enough for a rookie QB. That's my opinion. I don't really know what decisions were made. But I believe O'Brien is on board, finally with the McNairs.

Or maybe that's more hope.

Who knows? This franchise is all over the place. Injuries has hit us hard again, especially on the offensive side which needs the most attention. Im not calling it a season but it doesn't look like its going to be a good one.

Is Hopkins hurt?

He has been dealing with a "hand" issue. I am hoping that this "hand" issue is not a recurrence of the wrist injury he had surgery on the end of 2014.

All of the interior OL depth aside from Mancz has been cut. I assume Texans are targeting someone cut from another team....

Vikings starting guard Alex Boone was cut...

lol I called it. I told everyone that the interior ol depth was pathetic. Good move to release them all. Hope we have our eyes on a few guys to help us.

Brad Seaton Olineman drafted by Titans in 7th round also cut. Lots of people wanted to add him draft season and Texans met with him multiple times... more of an OT prospect though, think he's too tall to kick inside.

I like Seaton, but he'd have to go on the P/S for a year. What about TJ Clemmings? Minnesota cut him. He's 25 & was a full time starter for 2 years at RT. I haven't watched him, but he sounded good coming out of college. Any thoughts on why they cut him?

It's funny. Leading up to the draft, he was compared favorably to Duane Brown. The Vikings tried him at tackle and even guard. He was terrible at each position.

Clemmings was rated by PFF as literally the worst OT in the NFL last year. MIN tried him at LG this off-season and he was no better.

Lots of people were excited about Clemmings when he came out in the 2015 Draft. Because of injuries on the OL, Clemmings was put to use as a swing tackle that year and last year, and struggled mightily at both sides. Could have been a case of a rookie thrown into the fire too soon and "ruined," but so far this year, his struggles continued.

The OL turned out exactly as expected, with the exception of Brown's absence. The only question I had was whether we would carry 9 or 10 and whether Fuller would be on the PS or active roster. The acquisition of a player to strengthen RT was not unexpected and the G-man is an improvement.

If Brown reports, this line will be better than last year's. Without him, if Lamm can be just average, we won't be worse and, I think, still better.

Texans have never been a transparent organization, running clandestine operation, covering tracks, coded messages, yes men @ every media outlet spouting nothing new or informative.

There must be something missing like a BIG announcement prior to the season opener that solidifies offensive line cause this will not cut it.

They went all in with future picks, it's now or never for Smith/O'Brian.

What's BOB supposed to say?

I hope Savage can stay healthy this week.

I stand by my thoughts, Lamm is a marginal NFL OL at best.

I agree with the what's he supposed to say comment.

I'd be impressed if Lamm turned out to be marginal, especially at LT. I doubt the Texans ever thought they'd have to start him at LT.

I'm thinking that Davenport will get a lot of playing time... sure hope it's not to big for him

If Brown holds out, I'd contact Seattle and check their interest in taking Brown for Pocic and a 2018 RD3. I wanted Pocic in the draft and this might be a way to get him and another pick in 18. Pocic is also listed as C and RT on the Seahawks depth chart.

Smartest lineman in the draft...............scored a 29 on wonderlic. But in college mostly played C (a little G and RT)...........not going to happen in the NFL at 6'6". Seattle was trying him out at RT, but more so at RG where I believe they see him in the long run. When Fant went down, there was some talk of giving him some practice at LT, but it didn't really materialize. He's not the strongest player for the LT, especially questionable when you add that his footwork has not thus far shown to be great and he has trouble getting leverage with pad levels against his opponent.......... but maybe he could build up his strength and develop better technique for the LT position...........but, of course, all this take time.

I strongly believe we wouldn't be able to get anything higher than a single 3rd rounder if we trade DB. He's 32 years old, only two years left in contract, coming off major surgery, and already expressed he wants one more payday. Not the most attractive trading piece.

As has been said, what else is he going to tell media/fans?.............."I am praying we can make it through the season with this OL because I know they really suck.":backsout:

Ever wonder how players would respond to the truth , coaches giving an honest assessment of a unit , position or team in general ??

I mean even sh!tty teams say the same thing .... "we're confident bla bla bla" ... "we need to get better" .... Its never we suck.

Just once I'd like to hear a coach or GM tell it how it is just to see how the players respond.

It'd have to be someone with one foot out the door to retirement. No way you can tell your players that they suck publicly and have any players to tell that to next year

Coach Vrabel told the they suck on Hard Knocks. They responded pretty darn well. Top 5 defense.
