State of the O-line

I didn't know what to expect from the line yesterday, but they weren't just bad, they were monumentally bad. If there's one thing O'Brien should know about Savage it's that he can't possibly succeed behind a line that bad because
he has no mobililty, no athleticism.

What the hell was our training camp like? Our defense just kick the deep out of our o line or was it too easy for them?

Did our defense get complacent after practicing against our o line?

Houston's offensive line is one of the three cheapest units in the league. They looked like it on Sunday. Whether it's statuesque Savage in the pocket or the more mobile Watson, the unit needs to protect the quarterback better if the Texans have any hope of competing for another AFC South crown. They sure didn't look like contenders on Sunday.

Wasn't my intention to not attribute that to the original author (not my words) but I should have put it in quotes to begin with. I definitely agree with it though. The rest is at the link.

There are a lot of things O'Brien should know but so far there's been very little evidence that he knows any of them.

Yeah, you sit that guy right now I don't care how much you're paying him. That's a level of play that makes me wonder if he doesn't have money on the Jaguars or something. It seems like it's damn near intentional suckage. It's like we signed him without looking at any recent game tape because this guy was in decline with the Chiefs over his last two seasons there. We gave him a four year deal worth $18.5 million for crying out loud.

There seem to be too many holes in the dyke to expect them to be plugged any time soon by O'Brien or anyone else............in the O...........or in the D.

I am watching some more of the game now. Both T's played extremely poor. Gia at RT was trash. I think he gets replaced in the second half, but haven't got that far yet. Martin is struggling mightily too.

Our scheme is trash for the OL. So many times we are doing unnecessary pulling and traps. They got way too cute up front. OB better simplify the OL calls and let them put a hat on a hat and play ball.

Greg Mancz likely to start on Texans' offensive line in week 2
*****
"Absolutely, I can envision Mancz starting," coach Bill O'Brien said Monday. "Mancz hung in there and played tough. I think a lot of that will have to do with the medical report. He started 16 games last year. We have the visual evidence of him starting for us."

Mancz is expected to start at one of the guard positions.......which one? Will it be for X or Allen? Toss up at this time. He played a little on both sides this last game..................and blended right in with the rest of the Oline.:chef:

I'm sorry DocBar, I have to go with neglect on this one. In 3 years they draft only 2 O-linemen (XSF and Martin) while letting Brandon Brooks and Jones go in FA. Then when the draft is weak at the O-line position they take a 4th rounder and a 7th rounder (Davenport and Fuller) that are developmental at best. On top of that they won't come to terms with their best OT (Brown) and have probably lost their RT (Newton) forever. A team cannot sustain these kinds of losses on their O-line and expect it to be good enough by filling in with UDFA's and washed up journeymen scrubs that probably couldn't make another team. I guess what I'm saying is, if I, and others on this MB, can see this then why couldn't they (BOB, RS, and whoever else makes personnel decisions) see it?

I said it before in another post, the O-line is the "Achilles heel" for this team. And now it looks like they've taken an arrow right in the heel with the Jags doing their best "Paris" imitation! If they don't get Brown back here soon this whole season could go down the drain. If they can get him back quickly enough and if Watson starts to develop I still think they have a chance to win the division. But, if Brown continues to hold out, forget it. They'll be lucky to win 6 games. Watson will only be able to do so much with his mobility to cover up that line.

I think the issue is that the investments they've made haven't worked out for one reason or another.

They sign newton long term and he screws both his knees...literally...

X has sucked...

They got Clark who should be a solid emergency fill in but he's not a starter.

They signed Bergstrom and Allen both of who were thought to be decent to good signings at the time. They both sucked.

They brought in mancz who had been good.

They drafted Martin who got injured.

They had brown but he's holding out.

I don't think lack of investment has been nearly as big of an issue as investing in the wrong guys and/or not developing them once they are here.

But ultimately none of this why what when should matter at this point. They've all failed big time in some capacity or another so it's time to wipe the slate clean. Clear house. Start over.

Because this **** ain't working.

2014 the draft that changed two franchises .

Texans

1. Jadeveon Clowney
2. Xavier Su'a-Filo
3. C.J. Fiedorowicz
3. Louis Nix
4. Tom Savage
6. Jeoffrey Pagan
6. Alfred Blue
6. Jay Prosch
7. Andre Hal
7. Lonnie Ballentine

Raiders

1. LB Khalil Mack
2. Derek Carr
3. Gabe Jackson
4. Justin Ellis
5. Keith McGill
6. Shelby Harris
7. Jonathon Dowling

One team has three probowlers from this draft the other has one . One team had first choice in each round and missed .

I would have taken Jackson , a four year starting , all SEC guard , everyday of the week over XSF a converted OT from a passing conference .

I liked the xsf pick (wasn't my first choice) but he's been a huge bust. I'm not even interested in deciphering why at this point.

I'm just tired of it all. There's too much wrong with how this team has been run.

I was ready to get rid of Kubiak and in hindsight I still felt he should've been fired, but as much as I wanted him gone his tenure was absolutely the shining moment for this franchise.

And my biggest fear is that Watson is going to be what my initial assessment of him was.

As you highlighted with that draft @Honoring Earl 34 it's more than the online. The decision making process is screwed up. There's bad decisions being made all over the place.

Time to sign your brother.

He would be an upgrade at RT.

Did he stick with the Cards again this season?

Nope. Got cut and recently had a tryout with the Lions.

If he doesn't hear anything soon he has an accounting job waiting on him in Nebraska so he's good. Thanks for asking.

A fine young man that understood the value of a college education in addition to being a great athlete. Your family must be very proud. Wish him the best from me when you talk to him.

Nick Martin LG Kyle Fuller at Center with Manz RG. Davenport at LT and Lamm at RT would be what I would have at practice to see if they could be any worse.

I think this is the debate in the office , talent vs coaching . I think XSF showed who he was in his first camp and had excuses made for him .

How do you go into camp with this garbage at O line? Many of these guys aren't talented enough to be backups and we have them starting.

I don't think it matters if / when Duane Brown comes back.

Somehow Rick Smith is still going to be here after mortgaging our future for a pick who's going to get killed by our lack of an oline

I wonder if that would have turned out any better. I agree, something is wrong with the player selection process. But I don't see anything right in the player development process either.

XSF doesn't appear to be any better & it doesn't appear the Texans have done anything to help him. Martin looks iffy, not like the stud we drafted. Allen played better before he got here. & Duane Brown doesn't appear to want to be here.

They've got Mancz who's played above his UDFA status... anything else?

Vinnie Ronca @PFF_Vinnie
Texans RT Breno Giacomini surrendered 7 total pressures (2 sacks/1 hit/4 hurries) today vs the Jaguars.

The Texans O-line allowed 23 total pressures vs the Jags. RBs allowed 2 more and 1 was charged to Watson.

26 pressures on 58 pass plays.

Other than C Nick Martin (0 pressures), every starting Texans O-lineman surrendered at least 3 pressures vs the Jaguars

Martin certainly appeared to give up some pressure in that game... rollover from the terrible play around him?

I don't buy that because I think it's on O'Brien and his assistants, or in other words it' on HC Bill O'Brien.
I think Smith and/or ownership had to ask O'Brien if he was satisfied with his Oline and there's no plausible explanation why he would say "yes" if he wasn't.
I'm so fed with O'brien and his complete lack of credibility I'm OK with McNair turning command of the team over to RAC, right now.

Happens every year with O'Brien. He starts to cover his ass by blaming other people through anonymous sources.
