State of the O-line

Agree. As Watson goes so goes rest of offense. I believe he is overthinking. He needs make better decisions and when to run and when chunk it to the crowd. But he can't disregard his talents.

Anyone mention how we were able to run on Washington? Before the game they were only giving up 130 on the ground & we got them for 140.
TK the backs looked pretty good receiving also which I have been vocal on OBrien using them more for. Since TEs and DT got noting our RBs should have had even more called pass plays. Send slot Coutee fast and deep and target Miller in the 15-20 yard range in middle.

Both backs had some really nice runs. I guess the #1 plan is to keep Watson healthy. maybe his injuries are bothering him just a bit.
Yes, and they may bother his career.
I think Bill is doing a good job in scratching out wins with this limited offense and formulating a plan to protect his QB and still get W's.
It's not super exciting to watch, but I would rather see a scratchy W than a flashy L.

A better ol and some experience means a bright future. Not gonna happen this year, but the future is bright.
Explain why this team cannot have high possibility of winning out. 11-5 seems extremely likely barring significant injuries. I think Sunday's play by Watson was aberration. He will be significantly better rest of regular season. Playoffs I'll worry about later. Defense gonna be impressive.

Oh they can go 11-5, that doesn't mean they're contenders.

Kinda like the Texans 12-4 season.

Simply put they aren't talented enough.

I just hope Watson gets out of this season healthy. That was my hope at the beginning of the season and remains so.

RAC needs to get Mercilus & Edjiofor involved in the pass rush. Not taking away Watt & Clowney, but adding to it.

We need to find a way to pressure QBs relentlessly. Then maybe we can even the playing field a bit for our offense.

He need to move both of them (Watt and Clowney) on the inside and allow Mercilus and EJ set the edge sometimes. Watt and Clowney refuses to set the edge. That's why teams are able to hit a few big one on the outside.

With Cajuste getting apparent serious injury another OT may come off the board at least to much later rounds. Hope I am wrong or we get him in a later round.

Proposing what you guys are saying would mean Edjifor would have to be out in coverage at times as an OLB...he's not ready for that as a rookie...Mercy can barely handle that as a veteran right now.

I'm only proposing we get two other pass rushers involved in the pass rush.

I'm sure there are reasons he has not. I'm hoping he finds a way.

Ravens released Hroniss Grasu yesterday. Wouldn't mind if the Texans took a look at him and drop one of our fringe guys like Burton or Keyes.

What a game last night! The O-line did a great job in the run game with 281 yards rushing with Miller having his best game as a Texan running for 162 yds and a TD, Deshaun with 70 yds and a TD, and even Blue with 49 yds and some drive sustaining runs late in the game. Mancz filled in for Kelemente after he was injured and the line didn't miss a beat, and even Davenport made the block that sprung Miller for that 97 yard TD run. I don't think we could ask for anything more from the O-line in the run game. They are playing well as a unit when the Texans run the ball.

In the passing game Deshaun only threw the ball 24 times with 19 completions and was sacked 4 times. He was probably pressured another 4 or 5 times but managed to escape and make a play. The O-line still needs a lot of work in this area and I noticed several times where it looked like the whole line would implode and Deshaun would have nowhere to go with the ball. How many of those were considered coverage sacks I don't know. I do know that Davenport had trouble on at least 2 plays where smaller OLBers would blow around him and get to Deshaun pretty quick. At least one of those times he was charged 1/2 a sack when LBer Jayon Brown got to Watson. But, that's the only sack charged to Davenport that I could tell. I'm not sure he will ever be quick enough or have the footwork to handle those types of players. I guess only time will tell.

Overall, despite giving up 4 sacks, I think the O-line had a great game. If they can keep the run game going like it has been and then just give Deshaun enough time to make a play in the passing game they have a good chance of keeping this win streak going and locking up the AFC South. How far this formula can take them in to the playoffs I don't know. But, up next is the Browns! So lets keep this thing rolling!

Honestly the only glaring liability currently is still Davenport at times, otherwise I'd say that being 'serviceable' is just as good as being all pro considering how pathetic they were to start the season. There is a thing to be said for chemistry and these guys are now finding out what their linemate is/isnt good at on certain plays and how to compensate for them? Either way they arent the glaring reason for struggles, lately most of the sacks seem to come from Watson not feeling the pressure and losing track of his internal clock.

one sack was clearly on Davenport just whiffing on his block. 2 I'd put on Watson, maybe the last one on O'Brien because idk why you are dropping back inside of 3 minutes up by 3 scores at the opposing teams 30.... There was one where I need to see the all 22 to really judge. Watson started flushing out to his right, but the DE on that side did a good job of stretching it out and staying in front of the tackle, once it was clear Watson couldn't get outside the tackle box he tried stepping back inside, but the backside DE beat Davenport and got home. I couldn't see the receivers from the broadcast on the play, so Idk if he had someone open quickly or not

I didn't see anybody open on that play.

I really questioned BOB calling that play at the time. It's like he didn't learn anything from the Miami game. Throwing the ball with a big lead late in the 4th qtr cost BOB WFV for the season. I was glad Watson just took the sack without taking a big hit and kept the clock running.

This is why I hope Gaine trades up if he has too to get a franchise LT. Davenport is a good backup but certainly not a 16 game NFL starter. Maybe Davenport can help show the drafted rookie the ropes.

Believe it or not, I'm intrigued by the improvement by Lamm. He's got the talent to be a solid RT. Lamm right now is as good as Newton was and has the ability to get better. He had a really good game last night.

During the last month, no offensive line has allowed less QB contact (sacks + hits) than the #Texans (2).

Prior to that, no offensive line had allowed more QB contact than the #Texans (38).

Wow! That's hard to believe. I would have guessed the Colts O-line. I remember some of the commentators saying Luck hadn't been sacked in something like 4 or 5 games but that was a few weeks ago.

I find this stat to be hard to believe honestly, mainly because it is incredibly hard to quantify it, and all that goes on in a play. In our last 3 games Watson has been sacked 11 times, and hit numerous others. How does the person know which one of those sacks and hits is the responsibility of the line, or the TE, or the back, or Watson? You honestly don't know until you know the play called, the protection that Watson set at the line, and the responsibilities of each individual on those calls. I just find it really hard to believe that in lets says 20 QB contacts(modest estimate) that only 2 were on the line.

They also might still have problems with quality pass rushers but last night was one of the olines better games.

Agreed I was very happy with their performance last night. O'Brien even felt confident enough in them to call some 4 receiver sets and leave them on an island. It's not something we have to do all the time, but we have to be able to run those plays consistently enough to be successful.
