State of the O-line

As long as they are average as a unit, RS will be ok with them.

Can't make every unit Top 10 (not my reasoning)

The Texans have been competitive, won the division, winning records...

Obviously OL is low on the totem pole for the ex DB

This is my disagreement with Ricky's philosophy.

Along with I dont believe he grinds out the draft season like some GM's do.

Agreed... I think he rely's too much on his scouting staff for the now and doesn't pay attention to next year
I don't know that Smith is much of a scouting talent to evaluate his own scouting staff.........especially for the offensive side of the ball. Looking at so many of questionable and/or injury-history riddled players that keep get trod in, it gives me pause that his basic philosophy may be somewhat "different" than other GMs.

Nevermind

So I cant have MY opinion that the OL is the bedrock of the team. You disagree?

You think Ricky is like Belichick and spends countless hrs watching film? Not to mention Belichick would probably disagree with half of Ricky's evals.

After working with Belichick, BOB knows what Ricky's all about, hence the friction in the Texans org.

Lets discuss this further in the AE Rick Smith thread.

And you don't based on ? Unless you've got some hidden source or information to the fact, your assumption is at best complete bs. To think that any GM in the league, let alone one with the amount of experience and time in the job as RS is not putting in the work is beyond absurd to say the least.

You seem to forget that he went to a basketball game at the beginning of free agency. :sarcasm:

Ricky really worked his a** off in FA this offseason.

He let Kubiak take time off for an elective surgery during the combine.

On HK Brady said very few grind like BB.

What amazes me is with Ricky's record in the draft/FA you think he grinds away at his job. Thanks for the laughs.

I've got a cousin that has coached in the league for 13 years and he started under BB -- said he's never seen anyone work as hard as him. So you're probably right that RS didn't work as hard but I'm guessing he isn't loafing around either.

Tough crowd here. He's done a good, if not great job, with his first rounders. He found guys like Brown, Hopkins and Merci late in the first round. I don't know the specifics about his work ethic but I'm sure he puts in the necessary hours.

When you're competing with BB you've got to work as hard as he does or the best you can hope for is a 2nd place medal.

It's the reason I want somebody from the Pats org in Ricky's job. They understand the amount of work that has to be done to compete with the Pats org.

BTW, this is why BOB wanted Cesarsio (Sp?) in Ricky's GM position

Probably ultimately, but he was wanting Nick Cesario to be hired as the Texans Director of Player Personnel instead of Jimmy Rae when Brian Gaines left.

Genius!!! The way to beat B.B. Is just to work longer and harder than him!!! I can't believe no one else thought of this! It makes perfect sense BB isn't smarter than the average bear, he just works harder than them. Rick better start popping those Adderals, no time for sleep, become celibate no time for sex, heck start wearing diapers no time to run back and forth to the restroom, every second counts!!!

Well atleast we know who's running the show.

There's obviously a house divided and Cesario is just another reason BOB wants out.

Yep,

If you want to beat the best, you've got to have a single minded focus and be willing to give up things you want/love to do to become successful.

Some on this MB understand what this is like in their own businesses. They've had divorces/problems with alcohol/no time for friendships etc... something very few understand, but something that's unfortunately necessary if you want to be the best in your field.

Ok but you have no evidence or direct insight into how hard the guy works or his level of commitment. You have no direct or indirect evidence as to his level of work ethic and any significant difference between BB. You just talking out your ass.

We get it you don't like the guy but there is fair criticism grounded in fact based results, and then there is below the belt unfounded insinuations. You choose to dabble in the latter for some reason which undercuts any credibility you might have.

Once again I ask how the heck do you know what level of work he puts in? Seriously other than your unfounded assertions about his character, motivations, etc what do you have???

You think what separates BB is his work ethic or that RS is lacking in this department. You think any GM in the league isn't busting his ass day in day out??? They all are, if they weren't they'd quickly be out of the job. Like I said there's criticism that is fair game and there is stuff that is clearly beyond the pale, and your continually wading into the swamp with this stuff.

I was responding to Max who said a relative who once worked for BB said he was the hardest worker he ever saw. I seriously doubt BB was at a basketball game the opening night of FA. (That's a fact) It actually makes sense for Smith to be at the game since he didn't plan on signing a single FA anyways. (Another fact)

Speculation: based on track record BB puts in way more time than Ricky. Is that fair enough for you?

Lets take this to the AE Rick Smith thread.

Its your constant berating of Rick Smith dude. Its getting old.

Tell me how disagreeing with how the team is built and how things like attending a Basketball game on the opening night of FA is berating Ricky McNair?

Just because it's obvious to a blind man BB works harder at his craft than Ricky does. Lets take this to the AE Rick Smith thread as I've asked before. I will not be responding or derailing this thread any longer.

Man get off the nonsense about Rick attending night basketball game. There is nothing wrong with living your own darn life.

He will continue to tap dance around your question. Reason being he truly despises the ground Rick walks on.

Getting back to the OL

Wouldn't Bryan Witzmann look good playing OG on the OL.

Ricky needs to find a way to bring in XTR's brother Givens Price. He would be a huge upgrade at RT.

This Duane brown hold out is not looking good guys. He could dis-sync what ever chemistry we have build in the preseason in terms of the O-line. Weak enough as it is.

I can't blame Rick Smith on this one. Duane has 2 more years left in his contract. He was happy on the front loaded years and now he is unhappy on the back end of it.

I could understand if this happens next year. We cannot build a a strong team when its okay for guys to hold out 2 years left in their contracts. IMHO Rick Smith MUST hold his ground on this one.

I can see DB retiring to be honest.

Somebody should get a poll going on if and when DB shows up to play for the Texans, if he's traded to another team, or if he retires in 2017 ?

Agreed, but when the team is brought down by the lack of talent on the OL who do you blame? Ricky for not getting DB in camp, or Ricky for not addressing the OL in FA/Draft?

On a side note the Pats are probably going to be cutting one of Waddle or Fleming and the Steelers probably dont have a spot for Coates. What would you give up in trade for these guys? Both would be upgrades.

Heath for Fleming seems fair. How about a 5th rd pick for Coates. Imagine a big WR with blazing speed that can catch the ball. Coates caught the ball as well as Fuller did last yr with a broken hand.

Well, if you think it's important for Brown to work with his team & build chemistry... maybe you guarantee this years salary after OTAs...

That is if that us all he's asking for & right now, we don't know.

Had Brown thought about he should have pushed for those years to be guaranteed in March or May... when he signed the deal.

He wants a raise. Very similar to Donald Penn situation. Brown is the 10th highest paid tackle in the NFL and the 8th highest paid LT.

He is at 9.4 right now after the de-escalators. Top 5 average is ~$12,950,000. He wants a 3 to 4 million dollar raise with guaranteed money over a 3-4 year contract. I don't know this for certain, but I have a pretty good idea this is what he is pining for.

Hunt has picked up two 1st downs on 3rd and 1 running behind the center and LG Witzmann. He sure would be an upgrade over XSF and Allen.

What chemistry, in each game so far we have seen the same 5 starting. They have been mixing things up.

Brown will come back in like he did last season. Knock off the little rust and go back to being the dominant Left Tackle that he is.

Witzmann?

He was signed as a UDFA by the Texans a couple of yrs ago from a division II school. Cut at the end of the preseason and I believe he was on the PS for awhile before the Texans let him go.

The Chiefs picked him up and developed him into a stud LG. What I liked about him coming out of college was the mean streak he plays with. He would drive his guy sometimes 5/10 yds off of the line of scrimmage before pile driving him into the ground.

Rick brings them in & the coaches... well?

One Positive about Osweiller's play last season is that he didn't hold on to the ball. He might have thrown it in the dirt, in the stands, or to the other team, but he rarely ate it & took a sack. Low sack numbers & a pretty good run game made for a good, "the OL ain't that bad" argument.

Tom's not about getting the ball out. He'll take some senseless sacks he shouldn't. The run game (draw on 3rd & long) will probably continue to post good numbers, though situationally I expect them to be as useless as always (can't convert, can't score).

We're going to need our coaches to come up with blitz beaters our team can execute. We're going to need our coaches to come up with run stunts our team can routinely execute to get 1 yard.

& that reminds me... Spencer Tillman was commenting on a play Savage was audibling to. He mentioned how the Saints defense looked weak/suspect on the right side. I looked & verified, we had the strongside set on our right, we had the numbers, but Savage ran the play to the left... the strength of the defense & it got stuffed.

I don't know if he did that to get it on film, or if he just didn't know any better.

Anyway, the coaches have their work cut out for them. If O'Brien can make a top 8 offense in the AFC, He'll earn that "guru" title.

This is why a QB cannot make a lousy OL look great!!! Savage and Watson are not magicians...RS is supposed to be the magician when it comes to identifying a team weakness and addressing it. RS has failed miserably with the OL. Last night was further evidence that he's seeing something that no sane person does.

I will hold my final observation until the team can put a healthy offensive unit on the field...when will this happen. RS has had more than ample time to address the depth (quality) issue as well. The depth on the OL and at TE is a little rough.
