Even if all this is true, money still trumps all. Even a beta Cal McNair can duck into an office, lock the door and have security escort O'Brien of the property, followed by a press release to explain the sudden opening for a new HC, a new OC and a new GM. O'Brien may be a bully, but he doesn't have that kind of power.
He does in UR/K-Dogs minds

A high 4th plus Stills is atleast worth a high 3rd. I would say a low 2nd. Depends on what you think of Stills.

Not all 3rd rd picks are equal.
I'm good with the trade.

I understand people getting bent on using a "2nd round pick" but it's a full year into the future so it doesn't have the "value" normally ascribed to a 2nd. It's a third round pick.

Now when 2021 draft comes around it's going to feel like a 2nd. But we'll have 2 years of production from a good WR.

Like you, I'm not overly concerned with our "lack of picks" in the upcoming draft. We have plenty. But I'm curious to see if BO'b can work this draft, acquire solid talent & build up our 2021 draft capital.

I'll be impressed if he can do that.

I would try to trade McKinney for a 2021 2nd and a move up in the 2nd in 2020.

I don't think you can get a 2nd for a two down, run stopping MLB with limited pass coverage skills. More like a 4th or 5th.
2021 2nd is a 2020 3rd, but yeah. Mckinney is very good in a very limited role

I have to admit. I don't spend any time looking at mock drafts or discussing who the Texans should be drafting. However, I never take year into consideration. IMHO, a 1st, 2nd or 3rd rounder is a 1st, 2nd or 3rd rounder regardless of year.

Not just you, but I've seen multiple posts on the devaluation or slotting of draft picks based on year. Where are these rules written? When did this start?

It is like time value of money, a future pick does not help you today, so you get the player immediately you traded for instead of waiting 12-24 months for a future draft, then the rookie to get his legs under him, while the vet like Tunsil is plug and play largely. So the rule of thumb is devalue a round if a year away. It is just a rule of thumb so we can still argue value

It's in the draft trade value chart floating around the internet. Teams don't trade a 3rd round pick for next year's third round pick & think it's an even swap. The team giving up the future pick has to sweeten the pot.

Think of it as financing a new truck. You can save up 3 years and buy it cash at the end of three years. Or you can finance it for 5 (and pay more in the long run) to get it today. It's the same truck with the same value, but to most people, it's worth the extra money to drive it home today.

I know Cal’s dad fully bought into the idea of a Houston professional football team. I’m not sure about Cal but it’s starting to become clearer that his interest in the team is more financial than anything. And that’s the disconnect; I do believe Houstonian’s are passionate about the Texans. I don’t think the ownership is reciprocal in the relationship with the fans.

Some here would say, because fans don’t blindly hand money over to the team hand-over-fist, and/or fall in line with everything they do we don’t deserve an owner that cares about us. I could not disagree more.

But I don’t think it’s complete laziness from the ownership perspective; it’s indifference.
I remember hearing all of these things from fans in one form or another from almost a year or two following the inception of the team.........way before this latest regime.

But a pick a year from now is not the same as same pick current year. It just isn't. Use tunsil for example, We gave up a first-round pick In 2020, but used him for an entire season. Can't you see that has tremendous value? Of course now the 2019 season is over with that first round pick does become a first round pick in 2020. I would not trade McKinney for anything less than a second round pick this year.

Another example of this was Ric Smith For multiple years trading late 6 & 7 round picks in the current year for a round earlier the following draft. It is not a new tool.

Instead of debating why not try to do both? Go get you a Very good cornerback in free agency perhaps two and get your pass rusher in the second round?
Not a good edge yr.

Give me Quinn in FA if you want an edge.

Personally I would try to sign Jones and Suh in FA then draft the best CB available.

A front 7 of Watt/ Blackson/Suh

Cunningham/Draft pick, I like Dye/Mercilus/Scarlett

CB's Jones/Draft pick, I like Gladney/Conley/Johnson/Crossen

Really appeals to me.

I understand your view of Suh but don't agree he will be here. Texans have had chances to bring him in before and to our knowledge never went that direction. He turned 33 in January & where possible I'd rather go younger. We also disagree on sportsmanship importance on Texans. I would be okay with Quinn but if both healthy would prob prefer Beaseley as couple years younger. Don't expect Gladney to be there at #57 if we get high second for McKinney would definitely look for him. Like you, I think he will slay at combine. TCU reportedly clocked him at 4.34 in 2018. His slight build doesn't turn me away as he should bulk a tad. Most do not know in '18 & '19 he had 78 targets of 10+ yards allowing only 19 catches!

Agreed, they wont sign Suh, but they should. Quinn would be a great FA signing. But I would sign Suh, (I dont think Watt can stay healthy for a full yr.) I'm OK with signing Beasley, but Quinn is better.

I think Gladney falls to the 35-40 range and at that point I would trade up to get him. He's really talented. 10 yr starter if healthy. IMHO

Some dudes on Facebook is trying to blame Olsen. They think that’s the reason why he got canned.

Interested in others opinions on this but I'm curious as to how BOB's personality is going to affect personnel now that he's GM. Mallet would've been gone before the plane landed without RSmith. And maybe that would have been the best thing, but it certainly seems like Clowney's situation was somewhat similarly affected by emotion on BOB's end. Whereas team guys like Merciless are going to get paid when maybe they shouldn't. It's just something that I've got my eye on now that BOB's in this role and it's not difficult to imagine a scenario where the personnel moves and contract negotiations (hold outs will be interesting) are affected by BOB's temperament.

Post SB power rankings on the NFL website put the Texans at the number 9 position, a little high I think. In any case, I'm putting this is the OB thread since they directly address this in their comments (below).

Bill O'Brien's aggressive land grab became official last week, when Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair announced that the head coach has been formally installed as the general manager, as well. O'Brien had been acting in that capacity since the firing of Brian Gaine last June, but the official decree puts the coach in a special class when it comes to organizational sway. It's essentially BOB's show now, and any success or failure will point directly back to him. He'll have to be creative as a roster builder this offseason: Quarterback Deshaun Watson and left tackle Laremy Tunsil will soon require new deals that could set the market at two marquee positions. That will gobble up cap space and could lead to salary-cap casualties and frugal spending on the free-agent market. The draft will present challenges, as well, after the Texans sent premium picks to Miami to land Tunsil last summer. Good luck, BOB

The osweiler trade was another one. He obviously wastes valuable assets like draft picks to appease his own emotions and cover up mistakes (like signing osweiler in the first place)

I didn't know BOB was GM when the Os trade was made.

"I think the first thing you look at is his film, how he plays the game," O'Brien said. "He's a big, tall guy with a strong arm and he stands in the pocket. When the rush is bearing down on him, he delivers the ball. Now, look, it's not always clean, but there's a lot that goes into that. I think the one thing I like about this guy is that he's got good leadership ability."

The Texans pounced on Osweiler only after an extensive review of every available quarterback, with O'Brien saying the team "spent a lot of time studying a lot of different guys, college guys, pro guys," but felt like "Brock gave us the best chance to win."

You mean O'Brien hated that Rick Smith let go a guy that he (OB), had liked so much? :brando: :kitten:

@RapSheet: Some transactions: The #Texans released CB Vernon Hargreaves, the former first rounder, and the #49ers have cut DT Ethan Westbrook.

Texans Want to Continue to Work With Vernon Hargreaves III Into 2020
Head coach Bill O'Brien liked what he saw from cornerback Vernon Hargreaves in 2019 and wants to continue to work with him into 2020.

The Texans are expected to have Hargreaves on the roster for the 2020 season.

At the right price. NO way dude was worth $10m. I am ok with a few projects on guys who have the measurables but need better coaching and some growing up, but needs to be at the right price. I doubt the dude gets $4m on the market

Only because OB borrows from the future.
You think a loan comes with no interest?
Depends on if you value DW4's health. Do you it think Conley was worth a 3rd?

And how well they draft. Plus unlike in the past use fa to their advantage.
