The same things you criticize Jaelen Strong about are similar things written and said about the likes of Dez Bryant and Terrell Owens. It makes me think that it's all ridiculous to be honest. Let's see how he develops. If in another year or two you can say the same things then I'll agree. Until then it's too soon to judge his play after one preseason. He hasn't even finished his rookie season yet. What do a lot of great wideouts have in common? Typically they arrive on the scene in year three. Not everybody dominates as a rookie wideout like Randy Moss. You'll see improvement from year one to two though.

This is a very common statement. Name three that needed year 3. As for your statements regarding T.O. and Dez ... how about some reports about their work ethic. Some knocks on their lazy routes, or criticism of lethargic blocking (from two of the best downfield blockers). I'll wait. Work wasn't an issue, and it's been a while but if my memory is correct T.O. has always been one of the hardest workers in the business. Dez has had issues everywhere ... except on the field. Add some articles about his poor effort on the field.

It's taking all I've got to be polite at this point, you should use lesser known players if you're going to make **** up.

We get it. You don't like Strong. But LOL that it is "taking all you got" to maintain civility about differing opinions over a rookie WR playing in the pre-season. Maybe you should go for a walk.

Sorry sweetheart, I know he's your guy but I thought I was playing nice by not blasting your friend for making up stories of significant players to fit his agenda. Should I address such issues with more aggressive reality instead of poorly veiled incredulity? Seeing as you didn't quote my post regarding Strong, or have an opposing opinion of the assessments, I assume you're just here to cheer on an argument.

I can agree with he needs better routes but his attitude and hands are there, although he double clutches not body catches.
Double Clutching will get passes knocked out of his hands.
Body Catching gets passes intercepted. I haven't seen a case of him body catching in preseason, although I missed the first half of game 4 and if he did so there then that would be the first case in 4 games of him doing it.
 
Fine. Ignorance is bliss. Watch the tape. He allows the ball to get into his gut to make a catch. He runs lazy, especially when not the primary target. He hasn't run half a tree the entire preseason. He rarely blocks. He fails to make the catch when it's away from his body. He relies on physicality (or busted coverage) to create separation. But, that's just my reality ... one that includes camp reports, hard knocks and recordings of 4 preseason games. Please ... make your own assessments. I only ask that you put a little reality into it.

Lets at least see some live rounds fired before we throw in a grenade on the boy. I like what i see in him and Mumphrey.

Has anyone else made similar observations? Not that I'm doubting you, but I haven't seen or heard anyone else make note of these issues.
 
Outside of camp reports and Hard Knocks, it seems to just be me. Maybe I'm just watching too hard, but I would love for someone to prove a statement of mine wrong.
 
WRs are coming into the league more pro-ready than every before. If it take 3 years to make a splash why would anyone draft a WR early? By that logic, most coaches would be fired before these "pros" learned to run a route or catch. Don't mistake the shitty WRs we've previously drafted influence you. Those guys could have 100 years of prep time and would still suck. You better come in, make some plays, and have some "juice" now or else you'll be drinking juice boxes in your living room.

When you say camp reports, are you talking about things like Deepi Sidhu's twitter? I haven't seen any of them say a bad word about our receivers.

Actually I was trying to calm the pending flame wars by pointing out that you are getting very heated over the pre-season play of a rookie 3rd rounder. Didn't work obviously. LOL that he is my guy. Ad hominem away, "sweetheart", and win the internets for the day. It's already Friday afternoon for me and I have 3.5 hours until the weekend starts.
 
All of what Scooter is saying is true but at this point in his career we're still waiting to see if the guy "gets it" and continues to improve. Not all players are the same and career paths vary wildly sometimes. He either improves or he won't last long. Looking through some of his college highlights he seems like one of those guys who does the Jadopey Jones thing. You know where he makes a crazy catch that has you thinking he's going to be amazing and then drops crap that hits him right in the hands. It's between the ears and it either gets better or it doesn't.

This season he's going to get on the field for a few plays. It's going to happen because OB and Co. seem to want to be able to use a variety of WR's and TE's much like New England does. Makes sense. We'll get to see whether Strong improves over the course of the year and by next training camp he's either pushing Shorts and/or Washington or he's going the other way and some other rookie or FA WR is trying to take food off his plate.

I have a lot of hope for him and for Mumf too. I always have hopes for Texans rookies. Who doesn't want a draft pick to work out?

But it's too soon to be declaring any of these guys future stars or worthless. It's just a bit too soon.
 
My comment looks like Tarzen plays like Jane was coined by a real scout, sorry can't remember his name but once I tuned in to watch his tape the statement stuck. If not for nagging injurys, tendency to layoff his routes would be uncovered. Should dominate, but doesn't, 4.4 speed never plays up to it. Hands are big, should be able to snatch or pluck the ball clean but too often he becomes a body catcher. And they let Khari Lee go for a 6th two years from now after trading up giving up two more picks plus 3rd for this slug, I don't get it.

I didn't necessarily disagree with you on expecting stars to come out of the 3rd round (I want stars in every round), but my gut told me it wasn't a reasonable expectation. So I went and looked up all the WR's drafted in the 3rd round in the last 15 years. I highlighted who I would consider to be stars in blue - that's 4 out of 69.

He catches much of his passes directly with his body. And many of the other catches that I've seen him catch when he is facing the ball, he catches with his hands, but without interruption in the same motion he continues to bring it with hard impact into his chest................rather than catch the ball in his hands, control it, and then tuck it into his body............the former essentially the same as a classic body catch

Final comment. Appreciate all the support from you & 65 but I'm a little off the reservation so kuddos to my friends for having my back all these years.

Was already to sign off on Strong early in draft process but the more I saw less I liked so it's all on me. Guess it's less about measureables & more about between the ears. Guessing Texans know now too but what the hell you going to do now?

Anyway, now it seems focus needs to be QB, OL & RB. Really pleased with Covington! Try to focus on positive. Rick Smith is excellent stop gap filler don't you agree :corrosion:

John McClain had some great stories about JB . He lived in the same apartments with his parents in New York . McClain said JB lived with a cat and had stacks of papers and magazines everywhere and he only ate tuna I think . John wanted to get a picture of JB but he was strict about no pictures so JM told him he wanted to get a picture of Joel's folks . He calls his Dad on the phone , by his first name , and tells him to come over a reporter wants a photo . McClain got a family pic of JB .

I think you are jumping off the Strong bandwagon a little early BL. I liked what I saw out of Strong in college, and I wont back down from that just because his rookie camp and first pre-season were a little rough. Give him a year or two, and I think that people will be changing their minds about him. He wont be an all-star, but I think he will prove to be a valuable piece to the Texans' offense.

Of course, I was on the Nix III bandwagon too... and still am, really. I think it was a poor decision to cut him after just one year. Draft picks are investments, and I think it is poor asset management to cut bait this early on a mid-round pick.

Never had a STRONG "man crush" then, now or highly likely ever. Not his fault, but HATE trading away picks to move up, unless there is a serious "man crush" this also fits into your "poor asset management" category. Been pleasantly surprised with Mumphrey so that helps offset disappointment.

It really depends on what the cost is to trade up. For both Nix III and Strong, I dont think we gave up that much- for Strong, we moved up in the third and gave up just a 5th and a 7th, and for Nix III we traded a 4th and a 5th, not even giving up our third. In terms of net loss, we lost 3 total picks in order to move up in order to grab 2 highly rated players- two 5ths and a 7th. That is great asset management. Giving up this early, however, is not.

You gave up those picks for a player who you just cut and a player that has been a disappointment in camp. I guess you and I have a different definition of great asset management.

To be fair, I really liked the Nix pick and hated the strong pick.

A player that I think was cut prematurely, and a player coming off of his rookie training camp. Giving up too early is the poor asset management, not the trades themselves.
Furthermore, you have to look at the picks given up- 2 5th rounders and a 7th. Odds are those picks were not going to turn into anything anyway.

I have seen nothing but improvement from J Strong.

Maybe he didn't know how to be a professional, but it appears he's learning.

I have a feeling we are going to love this guy on 3rd down and red zone.

Was he a disappointment in camp? Other than injury, have we heard any negatives about Nix in camp? He wasn't Wilfork, that's about it.

I'm not trying to defend Nix, just trying to make sense of what we're doing.

In no way do I see Covington as a future Wilfork replacement. He's looked more like a Wade Phillips 1 gaper. It would have made more sense to release Pagan & use Covington to spell Crick & Watt...

But what do I know?

I'm sorry, I am not buying it. The same excuses were trotted out for XSF and Nix. All 3 of them were out of shape and were behind the curve from the get-go. Fool me once..... The Texans deserve nothing but scathing criticism. The Texans are a delusional organization divorced from reality with no clue on how to build a winning team. The Texans are a huge embarrassment to the city of Houston. McNair should the sell the team to someone with the passion and intellect necessary to build a winner. We have a thin-skinned fool of an owner.

Brennan Williams had injury concerns before the draft. We drafted him anyway and he never played a down. Nix had medical concerns before the draft. We drafted him anyway and he never played a down. Strong had medical concerns before the draft and we drafted him anyway. Jury is still out on him. Way too early to make a ruling on him.

We should probably stop drafting guys who have medical concerns though. That track record ain't looking to good.
