Schemes will fit players!

Whether it be Kubiack, Smith, Sherman the tune is the same and it is a very wonderful tune at that. They all seem to recognize that the schemes they plan to employ must match the strengths and weaknesses of their players. They all impress me that they want to teach and get the ship righted. This is so opposite of the previous staff it is not even funny and its been what I have been harping on for a long time. Reading between the lines - because nobody wants to criticize the previous staff - I believe they think there is a lot of talent on this ball club that has gone to waste. We all have people we like and don't like as players, but I really think we need to step back and watch what happens with this group of coaches and instructors. Right now, I'm just bubbling with optomism based on what I'm hearing. Now, that could change, but I hope not.

There just have been so many situations the last few years where you just wanted to pull your hair out watching what the players were doing based on coaching and play calling by the coaches. It seemed like a never ending stream of if they could only execute. Well, its tough to execute something that is doomed to failure from the start.

I'm looking forward to what this staff does with our receivers, our defensive players, our offensive and defensive lines, and of course the rest of the offense including Carr. I have a feeling we will not recognize the team we put on the field. I believe there is going to be a light years change in the way they play and look. I'm also looking forward to the draft and what happens to us in that regard and how the coaches move the young players into the line up. Yes, Casserly has positioned us well, because we are getting 4 of the top tier players this go around. He had nothing to do with us getting the absolute 1st pick, but we have others as a result of the manuvering and we can thank our lucky stars because we have a lot of positions that need help. I think the bilge pumps are working overtime and the ship is a float getting ready to set sail. GO TEXXXXANS........

Man, I hope your right to be so optimistic. I'm warily starting to allow myself to feel a little optimism too, but then I look back to last off season when I was cracking on the 'chicken littles' thinking that we were about to challenge for a playoff spot.
I was way wrong in my sunny outlook then. I don't want to fall into that trap again.
Oh well, the glass is again starting to appear half full, and I hope this time it contains a beverage made with hopps and barley and not some other golden liquid...

haha i think Casserly had a lot to do with us getting the #1 pick. he sucked. if he didnt suck so much, so heavily, and so often, we wouldnt be in this position.

LOL! I feel you on that one. Although after what I saw in our draft and preseason last year, I was pretty sure we were in for a looooooong season.

I mostly agree w/ Ibar. I think that we will be pleased w/ what we see on the field. While I still maintain that we are realistically looking at a 6-10 season at best, I believe that we will actually resemble a FOOTBALL TEAM again as opposed to the blooper reel that was the 2005 season. W/ all the new rookie talent that we'll be adding, current players changing positions, new coaching staff, new coaching schemes, and FAs (hopefully)....we still have quite a ways to go.

While I still have very strong opinions as far as who we should draft, I do trust our new coaching staff b/c we clearly have a LOT better talent evaluators on the team now than we ever have had in the past. I expect that we will make better moves and less controversial ones (aside from the #1 pick debate) than we've seen in the past.

I also look forward to the coaches actually COACHING and putting the correct personel in a position to succeed....as opposed to the coaches screwing everything up, neglecting game adjustments when needed, and putting players on the field just b/c they had larger contracts than other players.

We should see players like AJ, Drob, and DD excel in our new schemes IMO. I also can't wait to see what players like Orr and Derek Armstrong can do...aside from ride the bench when they seem to be better than the other options that we had on the field. I also think Babin will benefit from moving to DE. Not to mention how the Oline should improve w/ Kubes and Sherman. I still doubt Carr and PBurnt, but maybe they'll improve as well.

Heck, with all of this optimism....maybe Bennie Joppru will excel and be our offensive MVP next season......

Seriously though, I think things are looking up. We don't have too much of a choice coming from 2-14.:yahoo:

It will be nice to see the staff adjust to the talent rather than trying to fit a square into a hole. I think they are excited about some of the "untapped" talent here...for example when he first came aboard, Coach was said to really like Jabar Gaffney. That tells me he has an idea of how to use him correctly because he hasn't been so far.

The fact that he really likes Gaffney scares me, because I really do not like Gaffney. He has had several years to develope and hasn't. Maybe there is an untapped talent but he has a difficult time getting open, drops balls, and gives up on routes. I've watched him alot at the games when the camera isn't on him and he is very unimpressive.

Gaffney can be our TJ Housh like in Cincy. He is fast enough to work deep, he has the best hands on the team, and is our best route runner. True he does not always seperate well, and I am not sure where you get gives up on routes. He was pretty unhappy last year with his role. I would think he sees him as that good compliment that will work the deep middle and crosses very well.

Ibar correctly called last years train wreck before training camp even started.

Here's hoping that he is right about this year. :D

I think Ibar brings up a very important point that is key to the draft too. The one move, out of the many choices we have, that I don't like is moving down to take Brick. IMHO I think some of our lineman might take to the new scheme. Add that to the fact that Kubiak will probably target guys in our other 3 Top picks that can fit the scheme and I think we can take care of some of the problems. They did that with the O-line in Denver and even had a starter this year that was a rookie FA. I know new schemes take time but hopefully the ship can be righted sooner than later.

He has dropped 5 balls over the last 3 seasons. Every WR drops some--that is a very low number. His hands are a strength, not a weakness.

Good post, Ibar. :thumbup I've felt the same way, that the old staff was trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It was just a couple of games into the season and it appeared quite evident that the players were no longer playing for the coaches (not meaning that they weren't giving 100% effort, but that in their minds the coaches were bad playcallers).

I will be interesting to see how these same players perform under a new coaching staff and new schemes designed for them. Only time will tell if the 2005 meltdown was primarily coaching, and how much of it was a lack of talent.

If I was a betting man, my money would be that Capers was clueless and lost control as a head coach.

The Texans were starting from scratch. They had the opportunity put the players in thier scheme. They did a poor job of recognizing and developing guys who should have fit the scheme. The current staff will have to be more flexible because they are not starting with a blank roster. My hope is that this philosophy of flexibility continues a couple of years down the road when Kubiak and co have more of their type of players (whatever that is) in place.

I disagree with you in this respect. The previous coaching staff had only one way to do things and that was their way. The great coaches know that you do what is best based on your personnel and what they can do. I will say, for example, Mathis is lucky he was protected by Marciano and shown the ropes. To his credit Marcian was one of the few that was and should have been respected from the previous staff. Do not under estimate how bad it was under the previous staff. I think the statements McNair and others have been making have subtly made it obvious that that was the case. I believe the atmosphere has totally changed for the better and that we are all going to be surprised.

There is a lot of work to be done by this coaching staff. For example, the receivers need a lot of coaching to teach what they are suppose to do and where they are suppose to be. Even AJ needs a lot of work. Yes, they do have a lot of talent, but they have to unlearn what they have been taught by the previous coaching staff.

On the defensive side of the ball its very similar. There's a lot to be done and there will be a lot of movement of players. However, I don't think we will lack coaching enthusiasm and understanding. As Smith said, it will be the Texan's scheme, not his. In my way of thinking Sherman will greatly assist Kubiack in bringing this all together. He will be the catalyst that makes this all possible.

As I've said to me they are all saying the right things, but actions speak louder than words. I keep hoping to hear little tibits like Kubiack, Carr and AJ where seen together working somewhere or perhaps Smith and some of the players were talking about the defensive changes and the schemes to be employed. I know its early, but there is a lot of work to be done. So far of all the players, it seems like Carr has been the one with the most contact with the new staff. I would like to hear that others are getting involved. That would really begin to show that this is an inclusive, not exclusive coaching staff. GOOO TEXXXXANS....................

They MUST be handing out ice skates in hell. Ibar is optimistic and others are pessimistic. The world must be coming to an end....REPENT!!!!!

This is oversimplifying the other way. All coaches have a system of what they want to do and how they want it done. A good organization gets players who fit in the coach's system. Sure, coaches should adjust to the talents of the players, but it not an all or nothing situation. there is a balance between the two ends. The scale of system versus adjusting to talent slides. The Texans previous administration should have been more locked into their system than most teams. Using the Parcell's line about grocery shopping, the Texans started with a bare cupboard. Any ingredients that did not correspond to the recipe is their fault.

I completely disagree w/ this statement. While I don't necessarily think Gaffney is the next superstar WR in the league, I do think that if used correctly, he will be an asset to our team.

Gaffney doesn't have great seperation speed, but he has the best hands on the team (Derek Armstrong is very close), he's the best route-runner, and he does NOT drop a very many balls. Just as sure as AJ is our big-play guy, Gaffney COULD be a very reliable third down option to move the chains.:twocents:
