Save us Savage!!!!!!!

Looking at this QB situation from another angle...if Savage stays healthy and has a breakthrough season, could the Texans put Watson back on the market before the 2018 NFL Draft and get a RD1 and a 2019 pick of some kind (RD1 to RD5) in return?

Why not?
David Carr was so great , the Texans were able to trade Henson (a 6th rounder) to the Cowboys the next year for a third round draft picker.

If Casserly can pull that off, Rick Smith should be able to deal Watson for 5 first round draft picks.

:ahhaha:

If the Texans were to have a very good season with Savage under center, the front office would certainly have a delemma. A liKelly scenario that has been discussed is that Savage would be franchised. If Savage continued to play well, provided they didn't trade him, they might then trade Watson. But Savage will likely have to put together back to back good seasons.

Probably not is my guess, but if Savage missed some games and he came in and looked real good, you could get something for him, but the question would be why? A good QB is worth more than the extra they payed for him, you'd be better off keeping him as a backup and Franchising Savage for the year, and keeping the options open going forward for at least another year.

I don't know what a delemma or a likely scenario is (:kitten:) but I would target back to back 30+ tds and 4,500 passing yards as good enough to get a franchise QB-type contract for Savage. If Savage can do that, you know you've got your guy.

How good of a season would he have to have for you to consider franchising him? $19.9M for Kirk Cousins in 2016. What would you have to see to want to give him $19.9M?

I know all the Texans need to see is avgish stats over a seven game period including a win against the Patriots. He can even be benched during that period & still get paid.

But for you, what would you have to see?

Back to back seasons? Savage is a free agent after 2017. They'd have to franchise tag him after one season for him to go back to back.

Him playing well enough to warrant it?

I understand that. If he has a season like I described, of course you would franchise him and see what he does in 2018. Watson is pretty cheap and Weeden will be gone in 2018.

Why all the talk about franchising him? Don't you think he'd resign for a decent contract if given the chance? He seems to like OB and OB him so why would he bail? Don't you think if he played really well the Texans would do all they could to resign him before he hit free agency?

First, I'm a little put out with this entire organizational mess we seem to have going on, but as a fan, I tend to accept the decisions made. As far as Savage, it's not so much about stats as it is about leadership. The team has to play well; and win our division. Winning the conference would clinch his hold on the position; but if we were to lose out to Brady and the Pats, if we played a good game, I wouldn't hold it against him. What it comes down to is the "eye" test. He has to show that he has what it takes to lead the team going forward.

I think, if Savage could put together a season of 3,500+ yards with 20+ TD and -10 INT while leading this offense to a Top 11 finish...it could be enough if the running game gets 1,200+ and 700+ yards with 15+ TD out of their respective duo of Miller and Foreman. Why? In O'Brien's offense, if the running game is delivering, Savage need only manage the plan and keep his TO's at minimum. I think both requirements could pay into Savage's strengths.

The signing of Osweiler eliminated the opportunity to see what Savage might have done for 2 consecutive seasons while he was still under his rookie contract. The drafting of Watson really creates a Catch-22 situation for the FO if Savage has a break-out season. Franchise or new contract? That could become a big question mark. I think the Texans might have been better off taking OL at he top of the draft and leave the QB position to the 2018 draft. The Texans could have set the table for Savage and if he "personally" was the contributing factor to a less than expected season...then the team has set the table for its new QB.

So Savage just needs to accomplish something no other QB in Texan history, including '09-'10 Schaub, was every able to accomplish?

20-10 is the same ratio as 24-12 and just a hair better than 29-15.
Besides, Schaub threw for well better than 4,000 yards those years.

If we're talking about franchising him, that makes sense to me. The numbers he posted.

Those numbers also indicate that the running game is doing its job and Savage's numbers would indicate he's managing the offense and utilizing the available weapons.

I think the point of possibly franchising him is that you'd want to see if he can have repeated success that second year before committing yourself to a long contract.
Also if he plays good this year, he will likely get a decent FA offer from a QB desperate team, so franchising him gives you the option to avoid a bidding war over a guy who has only one full season of success (assuming he plays well this year).

I get that but it's not the Texans M.O.

More like they sign him to a favorable 3 year deal for him to prove himself

Yeah I agree with you there. I wasn't trying to predict what the team would do. Just saying it would be an option in general.

I hope you end up paying up, but it's a good thing that I'm also a dog lover. I'll bring doggie breath mints. lol

Bacon?

GD boxers have eaten my last 4 jalepeno plants. Still didn't smell like peppers.

I camouflaged the current one behind a Gong Bao pepper.

If he plays well... how well would he have to play for a team to get close to $19M when they won't be able to talk to him before the start of FA?

Unless Rick Smith is working for another team, I don't think it's going to happen.

Either of the following:

11-12 wins .... AFC Championship game (win or lose) While NOT being "why we lost" any single game.

25+ TD's and single digit INT's and a completion percentage of 65% or better. (he's playing well despite other factors).

Interception numbers don't matter so much to me, it's the timing of them. If he's not throwing Schaub like pick 6's, the occasional pick (10-15) ain't so bad. If he gives us the bolded plus 25+ TD's I like our chances

How well did Osweiler play in less than 16 games before he got paid? Decent but far from outstanding.
If Savage plays decent and shows potential for one healthy year, somebody will pay him.
Of course that's a big "if".

Mmmmmmmm....bacon.....

F'kers wait until there are 4 or 5 on the plant and then eat it to the ground. Texas boxers?

"Hey knucklehead I'd have shot a dove and bought you bacon. Leave my GD jalapeno alone." "Who, me?" "Yeah you with the leaf sticking out of your mouth."

I think that was his point. Rick Smith paid Os, do you think anyone else would have?

something about jalapeno plants... I had a mutt that loved them too

Jake is still smiling...

and so are you

Yeah.

Jake was a good dog. Close to 30 lbs lighter than Sue but whip strong. Bear called him regal because he had cropped ears, stood point and would flip a dog in a heartbeat. He was so fast. You'd be standing there, about the time your brain registered the other dog growled he was on the ground. "Jake, take your mouth off his throat."

And then he'd lay next to Bear. "Ain't nothing getting thru me to this little girl."
