Save us Savage!!!!!!!

QB Tom Savage is not expected to play unless the Texans are eliminated from the playoffs.
With Ryan Mallett done for the season, we'd love to see the Texans give Savage a shot over limited veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. It doesn't look like it's going to happen. The 5-6 Texans are two games out of first place in the AFC South with five games to go. Nov 25 - 9:52 AM
So much for O'Brien being loyal to guys that have been here for the duration and sweated with the team during camp and whatnot as opposed some dude off the street who has to use GPS to find the stadium.

Are you saying OB should have brought Case back, or do you think this quote means Savage will be behind Thad Lewis?

How much validity do you put into it? Savage will be the #3, but this piece is based off McClain's opinion

O'Brien says the #Texans are pleased with Tom Savage right now, but playing quarterback in the league is hard.

Houston Texans ‏@HoustonTexans
O'Brien: Let me be real clear. We're very pleased at Tom (Savage)'s progress at this point... Thaddeus & Tom will battle it out during the week for the #2 spot.

O'Brien Explains The Tom Savage Situation

“With us where we are right now at 5-6 and still having a shot, we go with Fitz (Ryan Fitzpatrick) and we’ll let Thad (Lewis) and Tom kind battle it out during the week to see who the number two guy is.” said O’Brien.

O’Brien made it clear that there is nothing wrong with Savage as a player, but is hesitant to throw a rookie quarterback into the fold.

“Let me be real clear about that. We’re very pleased with Tom’s progress to this point. I think it’s very difficult to play quarterback in this league as a rookie. I think that’s my philosophy.” explained O’Brien.

“I think that’s a difficult thing to do. I think it’s a difficult thing to be able to play as a rookie in this league, especially late in the year when you haven’t played yet and there are a lot of different things going on defensively. If he keeps practicing the way he’s been today, tomorrow and Friday, there is a chance that he could be number two and we would be happy with that because he’s progressed.” continued O’Brien.

We'll officially be eliminated soon enough. If that's any consolation prize.
Are you sure about that? The Texans should beat the Titans and Jaguars the next two games. We'll be 7-6 going to Indianapolis on December 14. That's not going to have us eliminated from playoff contention quite yet. At the very least we have until then which is a long time away.

Have you ever gone into a game knowing we were certain win? We seem to the bed when we least expect it.

My expectations of this years team are low. I wouldn't be surprised if we win or lost those two games.

I think we can beat the Titans and Jaguars with a rookie like Tom Savage at quarterback much less an experienced veteran starter like Ryan Fitzpatrick. That doesn't say much as I believe the Titans and Jaguars are downright awful teams despite their quarterback situation looking a little better than ours at the moment. Our defense should be able to force a combined six or more turnovers in these next two games.

Hopefully our run game is able to have some success whether it's Arian Foster or Alfred Blue. The Bengals defensive line is one of the best in football. We shouldn't see another one that good until we play the Ravens. Although I will say this: I watched tape of the Jaguars' impressive first half at Indianapolis during their last game. They played one awesome 30 minutes of football defensively. They were able to harass Andrew Luck for the entire first half and held them without a Touchdown. The problem is they caved in the second half like bad teams tend to do. The Texans actually have to show up and play hard but if they do these next two games are very winnable.

This team is 5-6 but we've lost games to way better football teams than the Titans and Jaguars. Every game we lost was to a solid playoff contender except the Giants, who are a deceivingly bad record team, just because they have a two-time Super Bowl champion head coach and quarterback. Along with freakishly good wide receivers (two or three of them) when healthy. I'm pretty sure Victor Cruz was healthy when we played them and he burned us for a Touchdown. That other rookie they have can make one-handed grabs look routine. Even better than DeAndre Hopkins does.

I'd call this season a huge disappointment if we lose to the Titans or Jaguars. It should be expected to go 4-0 against those division rivals. If we don't have that mentality then I feel bad for our fan base.

I think this means Savage will remain the #3 QB.

...but I could be wrong.

We'll see which guy is active come Sunday

Coach Bill O’Brien said today that rookie Tom Savage is expected to be the backup quarterback on Sunday when the Texans host Tennessee.
Savage, the fourth-round pick who has been third on the depth chart behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Mallett this season, will be active and the No. 2 QB behind Fitzpatrick.

Veteran Thad Lewis, signed Tuesday, has replaced Mallett on the roster. Mallett suffered a season-ending torn pectoral muscle and was placed on injured reserve.

“Thad’s done a great job picking up the offense, but it’s hard to be ready in such a short time,” O’Brien said. “I’m leading toward Savage as the No. 2 quarterback.”

Savage is excited about the opportunity.

“This is how you prepare all season, whether you’re No. 2 or 3, you’re always preparing to be the guy at some point,” Savage said. “Nothing really changes for me, just keep working and trying to get better.

“Obviously, this is good for me. It’s a good feeling that things are paying off. I’ve got to focus on being ready in case something happens (to Fitzpatrick). This is week 13, and it’s definitely helped preparing like I’m going to be a starter each week and being around these guys. Thad’s even had an impact on me, sitting with me after practice and talking with me about what he’s gone through.

“It’ll be fun and a little nerve-racking at first going out there being in pads and knowing that I can be in there at any play. It’s kind of what you dream for. I’m excited about this.”

Good news. If Savage is the back-up (#2), that should improve his chances of playing when the Texans are finally eliminated in math terms from PO consideration.

For another fumble?

Perhaps for the first game where he isn't unexpectedly pulled from the bench to see his first NFL action against the division leader?

I wasn't a big Savage fan in the draft. He has all the physical tools but I wasn't sure about his mental makeup. In college he couldn't make quick decisions, held the ball too long, and took way too many sacks.

Having said that, it's pretty ridiculous how much flack the guy is getting on this board right now. He's a fourth round pick who wasn't supposed to play this year. What did y'all expect he would look like at this point?

Savage will get better guys. Not saying he's our future or anything like that, but he'll get better. I don't see our future QB on the roster right now anyway, including Mallet who might not even be back next year.

I would like to believe that he should be able execute handoffs and take snaps from center. One thing to look lost because the NFl is too bi g for a player another when the basics are eluding him.

Not really surprising with the number of dumbasses we have here.

I wonder if Savage will be able to go next week? That's gonna suck if he can't.

He looked clueless at times but also made some good plays. Hopefully he's not hurt too bad and he can play the next 2 games for valuable experience.

As far as the draft I don't care wgere we pick as long as rick smiths inept ass is still the GM.

He showed signs of improvement once he settled down. Long way to go but not a complete failure. He appears to have a strong arm more down field shots would have been nice.

He's just not ready, mentally/emotionally, to be at the helm. Key word for Tom is developmental -- he went over 1,000 days without any football.

Likely his ceiling is as a backup... more only if the game slows down a lot for him. Takes time.

He's got 6 days...

I only got to watch the game from the last two minutes of the 1st half, but I thought the kid did ok, under the circumstances. He's got some stuff to clean up and needs to get more in synch with his WR's, but he looks like he has potential. I bet a week of starter's reps go a long way with him.

He definitely has a laser rocket cannon for an arm and showed some touch on his deep balls.

Refs don't think so. Terrible no call & all I heard on broadcast was how excellent this crew is & will be in the playoffs. Good luck with that, makes me feel NFL has become like professionl wrestling, with outcome scripted.

Let's put it this way. If that is Manning, Brady, Rogers, Luck et al, does any single person in the entire world that follows NFL football believe that is NOT a flag?

Call the game fairly for all participants NFL not just the marquee QB's.

Rookie QBs as backups in complex offenses are usually a recipe for disaster when they have to relieve the starter during a game. They will build a game plan for him this week, he will get lots of reps, and he will have a chance to succeed. This game wasnt a fair assessment of his abilities.

Not that it matters for this season, but I thought Savage got progressively better. Still some mistakes to iron out, but he will quickly get better than Fitz if he can play healthy.

Aaron Rodgers' first start:

8-15 for 65 yards 36.8 passer rating.

I don't know the circumstances of this start, but I doubt the Packer faithful saw the heir to the throne.

I'm not saying Savage is the next... who am I kidding? That's exactly what I'm saying.

Hey David Carr we saw you holding a bud light so are you up for whatever? How about you play QB for the texans' final 2 games?

Rodgers first game experience came during a game vs the Cowboys when the Cowboys won the NFC, and Rodgers played well. He looked really good. I don't remember what his numbers ended up being, but people were impressed. That game helped the Packers when they decided to let Favre go.

Savage looked awful today.

That's the way it should be done, but not the way it is done nor is it the way the NFL wants it done. They want their stars in the big game at any cost while maintaining the pretense of a level playing field. You'll know things have changed when the NFL fines it's officials like they do their players.

I wouldn't say that, the kid has had no first team reps, so his timing was off on some routes and hand offs, but when in the pocket he looked really good to me. I hope the kid is okay so we can see how he looks after a full weeks practice with the first team.
