EDIT: New tweet:
But you have Arian?
If you worked with him for two years & your best bud worked with him for four years & the two of you were convinced he could be the next Phillip Rivers... how much would be too much?
This simply isn't the case, though.
I'm good wth a $12 mill contract that is properly structured.
If the Texans sign Mallett for even a cousin to that contract, the the deserve tosuck for a decade or more.We don't know what the case is. If they sign him for $12M/yr, then we'll have a good idea what they feel about Mallett. Keep in mind rumors are that Russell Wilson will get $73M in the first three years of his contract. five years at $12M/yr is only $60M.
& $12M/yr is well below Andy Dalton, Phillip Rivers, & Sam Bradford.

Mallett doesn't deserve to be in the same conversation with Wilson.
My understanding is they can sign their own players at anytime. When are the Texans allowed to extend contracts -vs- having to wait for FA?
Why would it impact 2014 cap as that season over?I believe they can extend anytime they want but there will be a hit to the 2014 cap not the 2015. I think....
My only point is if OB wants to marry himself to Ryan Mallett... have at it.

And if O'Brien had married himself to Manziel in last years draft would you be saying "have at it"? Both of them are bad choices; only years separate them.
Since he didn't choose to marry himself to Manziel in last year's draft I'd say it isn't likely he'll make a bad decision.
The league year doesn't end until March 10th. The Texans can franchise or transition tag Mallett and not affect the 2014 cap. But if they re-sign him before the end of the league year, any signing bonus would require 2014 space for the prorated amount. According to Spotrac, the Texans have $1.7 million available. So if they gave Mallett a 3 year deal with a $5 million signing bonus, that proration would fit under the cap.My understanding is they can sign their own players at anytime.

Then you expect O'Brien to move on from Mallett?

Did you intend to omit the contrast between their first NFL starts?
yeah $12m a year is steep for an unproven qb, even if you're bringing him in to be starter. I figure $6-8m a year on a short term dear with an easy out.
Then you expect O'Brien to move on from Mallett? I hope so. Immature QB's stay immature.

I think you have a good handle on the per year cap at this point in time. Luck, the all everything QB will make 7M in 2015 which was signed before he had experience, but with maximum POTENTIAL.

Look at JJ Watt's extension this season. He received a $10 million signing bonus, with $2 million allocated to the 2014 cap.Oakland just signed Woodson to an extension with a SB....didn't effect their 2014 cap number.
I'll double check though.
Texans are carrying over $966k from 2014.

Can't look at rookie contracts for market value. They're dictated by the league. Pretty definitionally not what the market would bear.
Schaub's 1st contract with the Texans was years ago but a better example because it was also a 2nd contract for an unproven QB. He got lower end mid-pack starter money.
He expects a ~one year prove it deal.Mallett -- at least what Fitz got, no more than two years more likely a one year deal 3-3.5 million range with incentives up to 5 million to put him as a starter in a position to get a big contract later...
It's not a perfect example (obviously, there is no perfect example) but I think the best comparison is Matt Flynn. ...
Agent Joel Corry if he was Mallet's agent...
He expects a ~one year prove it deal.
Excellent reference point.
I bet it is written for more than one but structured with the expectation it will be done after one either way.
One aspect that really intrigued me was the thought that the Jets have some interesting in bringing Ryan Mallett to New York. Mallett was a former 3rd round draft pick of the New England Patriots, before being traded to the Texans for a late round draft pick. Obviously our new GM was working within the Texans organization at the time of the trade and with his history of personnel scouting, I'd be surprised if Maccagnan wasn't heavily involved in that trade.
Defensive minded HC and Chan Gailey as OC for a 4-12 team? - if the Texans can't convince Mallett he would be better off under OB in a system he is familiar with, they suck.

Wait a minute, didn't Fitz QB for Gailey in Buffalo? I smell a reunion in the making. How about a conditional 6th rounder?Defensive minded HC and Chan Gailey as OC for a 4-12 team? - if the Texans can't convince Mallett he would be better off under OB in a system he is familiar with, they suck.
That would be a really dumb move...even for a guy that went to Arkansas.
Depends on the $$$$.
If the $$$$ is comparable it's a no brainer.
I think it would be a dumb move for Mallett even if the Jets offer $7 and the Texans offer $4-5. The Jets have been a QB carousel and the coaching there doesn't present an optimistic scenario for change. He fails there and he's likely done. The Texans give him his best chance at success and a real rather than trial contract. That's the contract where he makes his money.
but suppose the Jets are crazy enough to offer him a "real" contract, say a 3-4-5 year deal at 7-8 mil, instead of the "let's see what you got", 1-2 year contract we're all thinking the Texans will put on the table?
going to be interesting to see how it plays out.
I'm not saying they couldn't outbid the Texans. Just saying Mallett would be a fool to do it without substantially more guaranteed money and time. Dude is 26. Realistically he's got one long term contract in him if he plays his cards right. A 1-2 year test and then a 6 year deal puts him at 33-34 and then he's looking at extensions.

He can earn ~$5 million this year and then sign for an average in the high teens. I don't think Mallett wants to leave Texas, or O'Brien and his system for a couple of million more where he might quickly flame-out in a new system/with a different OC.
That looks like a good plan and I'm more than happy with Mallett, Keenum and Savage going into the 2015 season. This seems like it should be an easy done deal. Cut Fitz and save $3.25 mil.
Sign Mallett to a 2 year deal:
Year 1: $3 mil signing bonus, $3 mil roster bonus, $1 mil salary...$5.5 mil cap hit.
Year 2: $9 mil salary, $1.5 mil proration...$10.5 cap hit.
Year 2 is easy to dump him with just $1.5 mil in dead money if he's a dud, or high enough money to keep him happy while a long term contract is being worked out.

Keenum should be relatively easy to sign for a very reasonable amount. I'd give him a legit shot at starting, also. At the very least, he'd be the back up with Savage in the same spot he was in last season.Keenum isn't under contract either. What kind of deal would you give him to be the backup and will he be happy with no shot at starter status?

I would imagine he would sign for close to league minimum. He was a practice squad player last year with St. Louis before he came here. He's not going to be a starter next year so he might as well remain in Houston if he's given the opportunity.
Keenum is an exclusive rights free agent. So if the Texans want to retain him, all they need is to offer the minimum for a 3 year vet.Keenum isn't under contract either. What kind of deal would you give him to be the backup and will he be happy with no shot at starter status?
