Ryan Mallett traded to Texans

I have no problem with the trade. The risk is worth a 6th/7th rounder.

I'm still on record as saying that Mallett is garbage. But since he's with us now I would love to be proven wrong. I trust O'Brien so I'm just going to assume he knows what he's doing.

It's not like our QB situation could get worse by adding in a new guy.

Except I believe Mallett falls somewhere between Franchise QB and garbage.

hey, all you need is an average to above average QB to win a Super Bowl if you have a SB caliber defense...

Seahawks have proven that theory. It would be great for Mallett to be Tom Brady, but if he is above average and the mistakes are minimal, Joe Flacco, the would lead to success...

I had stated that I would rather the Texans to trade away for as many future draft picks S possible to get a guy like Mariota in the next draft.
(Or maybe Petty, if he continues to grow this year.)
IMHO, the FA crop of QB's this year were pretty lousy. I thing OB did the smart thing by bringing in Fitz. Do I wish he'd addressed the QB situation either earlier in the draft or with a different player? Yes, but Savage is a Texan now, so I'm pulling hard for him. My biggest fear is that OB wants to be like Casserly and try to turn a turd into a gem. Not saying Savage is a turd, just don't want to make it a 5 year project finding out.

BTW, they appear to be just muddying along with a cheap FA vet, a cheap trade and a cheap rookie.

First practice, JJ Watt all jacked up about his new deal blows through the line and plants Mallett into the turf screaming, "SHUT YOU DOWN!..."

"Hi, I'm JJ Watt, welcome to the Texans." :handshake:

Which is what makes this a great deal. Because if "Mallett > garbage", then Mallett is by definition > Fitzpatrick.

So we've upgraded our QB spot for a minimal investment.

If Mallett can just bring the QB play on this team up to average, we've got a shot to make some noise this year.

exactly. Mallett does not need to be Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, he just needs to limit his mistakes and make good decisions...

Hell if Mallett is Alex Smith in SF/KC, the Texans have a legitimate shot at making a run in the playoffs....

It all comes down to whether you think OB and Godsey know what they're doing or not.

Those two guys have seen a lot more of Mallett and worked directly with him than anyone on this board has, and more than anyone on twitter has. They've seen a lot more of Case Keenum and worked directly with him more than anyone on this board has and more than anyone on twitter has.

And the same with Fitzpatrick.

If those guys think this is an improvement and you think they're wrong, then you have to think they're idiots or morons to make this move. If you think they have any sort of expertise or knowledge, then you have to trust them. I don't see how you don't.

Yep

There is a certain number of posters that are butt hurt over trading for Mallett and cutting Keenum.

There is another faction that saw Mallett in college don't like him and don't believe he has improved during his time in New England. (I don't know how they could come to this conclusion since Mallett has barely played.)

Yet another faction doesn't like him because Mallett doesn't fit their image of a clean cut all American kinda QB.

I don't know if Mallet is the future and somewhere between the 2 factions regarding his play. But I will choose to trust BOB/Godsey on this one because they've worked with Mallett (Godsey in particular) for yrs. Over MB posters who have never even seen Mallett at practice, much less in a regular season NFL game.

That's the guy that watches me eat corndogs at the state fair.

Mallett will always be "the texas hammer" to me..

Mallett.... hammer... I get it.

Disagree.

I think OB has been using essentially the same offense the entire time. That's why McGloin was attractive as an option, he used this offense at Penn State.

I think Mallett already knows this playbook better than any QB already on our team.

Yep. I think it helps the conversation when folks have a basic grasp of fundamental concepts.

This might help some:

Speak My Language

As the players and schemes have changed, it's the way the Patriots talk that's continued their offensive dominance

Since Tom Brady became the starting quarterback in New England 12 years ago, the Patriots have finished in the top 10 in scoring 11 times, but the way they’ve gotten there hasn’t been nearly as consistent. In Brady’s early years, Bill Belichick built his offense not around his quarterback, but rather to support him, with a steady supply of dependable receivers and a physical running game. It was when Brady moved from trusted game manager to outright star that he became the offense’s centerpiece, and the need for reliable bolstering was replaced with the pursuit of a cast that could push him even further.

It's a really good article about the Patriots offense, but also about the history of modern NFL offenses in general.

When a QB has a WCO background, for instance, there is a reason why it is easier for him to grasp a new playbook with a new team using the same WCO concepts. New names and terminology, but the basic concepts and fundamentals are very similar to each other.

That's really surprising to me. Everyone I know are optimistic about the Texans and wear their gear win or lose. Even last year. And when I went out people were wearing their gear last year. I live in League City, guess it's just a "pocket".

I think this board is not really representative of Texans fans in general. Too many Monday-morning QBs on the radio and forums, but most Texans fans are not caught up in this stuff. They just enjoy the game for the entertainment that it is at the end of the day, and the reason the Texans are in their 13th season of straight stadium sellouts with a 4-5 year waiting list for season tickets.

Don't let the rabid and VOCAL fans cloud your judgment about all fans. This is a small minority of fans that like to analyze, talk, and apparently in some cases, moan and whine about everything Texans related.

At the 8 minute mark, Mallett comes in. Looked good to me. Had a few dropped balls and a few bad breaks up front where he took some hits, but looked accurate and pushed the ball upfield. Had a TD pass dropped towards the end of the clip. I think Mallett is going to push Ryan very fast. His ability to take shots down field is something we lack and he could help.

I watched that game yesterday, some good things in there, some bad. Don't really know what to make of what yet.

Good... some of those 50 yard shots at the endzone... if that was Andre or DeAndre... mmmmm-ummm. Kinda like that guy we just cut.

Bad... there was that free rusher he didn't see, didn't pick up for that first sack. The second, he lost 15 yards or so... kinda like that guy we just cut.

So, we'll see.

That is not an immobile QB.

Regardless of how all this turns out, I'm just glad we made a move. We did something.

If Kubiak had been the head coach, nothing would have been done. Nothing. Not only would he keep going with the status quo, but, he'd probably would reward Case with a big contract extension.

For someone who's never shown a damn thing in the NFL, some of yall sure expect a lot from Mullet. I hope you're right, but I just don't see it as yet.

Its almost like when you know this really hot girl and you find out she has a sister and you assume the sister has to be hot too right ? Well that's not always the case !

For me, it's just a matter of I've seen a lot of Fitzpatrick over the years to know what I'm getting. He wasn't that good in pre-season to me.

So I'm just hoping Mallet can at least be a better game manager than Fitzpatrick.

Yeah, that Kubiak, he'd never trade for a backup QB to be the Texans' solution at QB.

I like how he goes through the progressions and doesn't lock on like some we've seen in the Texans' history.

A little off topic, but those are two perfect examples of when a DB should & should not turn his head.

In the first one, the guy is beat. If he turns his head, not only does he not have a play on the ball, but he'll lose the receiver & he won't be there to give him that last bump that might have been enough to prevent the receiver from completing the catch.

On the second one, that's good coverage, just didn't finish. He's right there, he's looking at the receiver turn & look for the ball. He should turn as well, locate the ball & make a play on it.

One of the most useful links I've clicked in a while. Thank you very much for posting this.

edit: not sure why your link didn't make the quote... http://grantland.com/features/how-t...helped-maintain-dominance-tom-brady-patriots/

I really didn't know much detail regarding Erhardt-Perkins.

Didn't see this posted...Gives some insight on the trade and NFL Network breakdown on the trade.

Why Ryan Mallett is Intriguing

I said to Mike: “THIS is why he’s intriguing”.

Arkansas came out in “12” personnel with the two receivers to the left side and the two tight ends in a Y/wing alignment to the right. Mallett faked a run to RB Knile Davis and took a deep seven step drop. The inside receiver, just recently released Texan Joe Adams ran what appeared to be a deep “bang 8 route”, also known as a skinny post. Essentially his aim was to split the two safeties.

Mallett, at this point, is nine yards from the line of scrimmage and then with the flick of his wrist, he fired.

The ball left his hand at the 12 yard line and hit Adams in the hands at the 50. I’ll do the math, that’s a 38 yard throw. ON. A. ROPE. Adams should’ve caught it and it would’ve been a touchdown to start the game

Wonder if Mallett or Savage has a stronger arm?

Both those guys are supposed to have Cannons.

Perhaps a glimpse into the way OB sees QBs.

He was part of a phenomenal offense that year.

When watching his highlights, one thing that stands out is his ability to slip the blitz. He may not be athletic, but he certainly seems to have pocket presence.

His oline and wry were terrible. Constant pressure and dropped balls

One thing I like about mallett is his pocket presence. That's big for me. I think he's going to be a good player. Doesn't force things but will take shots. I'm excited about him.

Having read the Grantland article, I'm even more impressed with BB. That offense seems to be rooted more in the coach's ability to teach than the player's ability to learn. It's very hard to teach a concept to multiple individuals in ways that they can understand the concept, considering the different ways people can understand a concept.

If OB can be half the innovator of that system as BB has been, the Texans should be in could hands on both sides of the ball for years to come. Vrabel appears to be a DC/HC in the making.
