QB prospects

I saw Ball State play and I must say I was very impressed with junior Nate Davis. He's 5th in pass efficiency, right behind Chase Daniel and Christian Ponder (new FSU QB).

Career stats:

He also had 5 TDs on the ground in 2007.

What I saw in the game against Navy was a great deep ball, good pocket presence, the ability to look defenders off. He seemed to read the Navy defense pretty well but it was the Navy defense, so take it how you will.

2009 is not a good year for Senior QB's. However, if some underclassmen declare, then it gets good.

My top 10 (draft eligible):

Sam Bradford, Oklahoma
Mark Sanchez, USC
Matthew Stafford, Georgia
Tim Tebow, Florida
Cullen Harper, Clemson
Rudy Carpenter, Arizona State
Colt McCoy, Texas
Hunter Cantwell, Louisville
Curtis Painter, Purdue
Tom Brandstater, Fresno State

im not really lookin at qb's, mainly focusing on needs of the texans. but i will say, ole miss has some really good lookin young talent. RB brandon bolden has potential to be sec freshman of the year, he looks like a senior.

back to qb's though, jevan snead looks like the real deal. i love this kid. transfer from texas, had to sit out a year, and is performing better than i expected. at this point i dont really see him being a high draft pick so i would absolutely support the texans picking him on the second day. i think he'll be a quality backup in the pros and kubiak would really help. unless brink or boyd make the roster next year, snead is a pick if im gm. he fits the offense perfectly and is a smart qb. sage will be dealt in the offseason if schaub stays healthy or at the very least will leave via FA. we'll need a backup and snead is the guy i would groom.

Not in that order but those are the QB's that look real sharp so far but in the end I see it being Stafford, Harper and Painter in the first two rounds. The jury is still out of Tebow since he is a Meyer product and well all know how his last QB turned out.

I like Sanchez also, but he is looking like a 1st rounder and I am not ready to go QB in the 1st just yet.

If he where available in the 3rd, I would jump.

Stafford will be the top QB in the draft IMO.

Big, athletic kid playing well against the SEC. He's on a winning team and he has a rocket arm.

Give me Tim Tebow .... I know he doesnt have the best measurables but the guy just seems to find a way .

Oh man. I would be very unhappy. Not only because he is a Gator (and that is the overriding problem here) but another Urban Meyer product (see Alex Smith). Tebow is a great college football player, but the dude doesn't throw accurately consistently, and he's not going to be able to truck people like he does in college. He benefits tremendoulsy from Urban Meyer's system. Anybody see the amazing improvement in Chris Leak when Urban Meyer came in. All that misdirection and shifting really makes things alot easier on the QB.

Having said that it will be interesting to see how he develops in the NFL.

Stafford is a beast but he does have a ton of talent around him. I kind of like Max Hall right now good arm and he is older then most players

Many of the top QBs have a ton of talent around them. Arguably the top 3 QBs are from USC, Oklahoma, and Georgia...the top 3 schools in the nation.

My top 10 (draft eligible):

Sam Bradford, Oklahoma - weak arm & skinny as hell & he's only a sophmore i believe.
Mark Sanchez, USC
Matthew Stafford, Georgia
Tim Tebow, Florida - system qb
Cullen Harper, Clemson - garbage
Rudy Carpenter, Arizona State - garbage
Colt McCoy, Texas - too short & fragile
Hunter Cantwell, Louisville - who?
Curtis Painter, Purdue - don't know enough about him, but never heard of him until this post.
Tom Brandstater, Fresno State - do we really want another fresno state qb? some of us are still scrubing off the david carr stinch.

stafford & Sanchez are the only 2 worth looking into. Sanchez can move has a rocket for an arm & comes from a good system. The same for stafford.

I like my QB's from winning programs with a pro-style offense and a strong arm. I think their ability to lead a successful team in college is undervalued at time and overvalued at time. It should just be a factor along with ability and things like release time, sacks (pocket awareness) compared to just hurries, and why kind of offense they run. Guys like Reesing and Daniel shouldn't be drafted high because they run a dink-and-dump system. I love Reesing but he isn't NFL material.

not only that but daniels is short & reesing's arm strength is questionable. I too think that college success should be made more of a factor, but it has to be taken into account with all the other things; intangibles, arm strength etc. One things for sure...Jay Cutler probably doesn't agree with us. I had the opportunity to sit & watch him yesterday & he looks like night & day from last year, clearly a different guy & the top qb from that draft.

I'm still not sold on Cutler, but that is a different issue. In defense of Reesing, he has remarkable arm strength for his size. More than adequate for the NFL, however, it's the other things that hold him back. If he or Daniel were to get a shot, it would need to be in a WCO. However, we aren't here to talk about them because I don't like any of them at the next level.

Sounds like VY. No thanks.

Tebow actually has a good ball. He needs to work on accuracy on his crossing routes and becoming more of a "drop-back" passer. However, QB's are the hardest position for me to judge accurately, as is the case with many other people. There are way too many intangibles that go into determining QB success that only a FO would have access to leading up to the draft.

Really? It is only 2 games but Cutler is looking like the 2nd coming out there every since he got his diabetes diagnosed & under control. He still makes questionable decisions, but he's also still young. He might force some balls but his arm strength allows him to get away with it.....like favre.

Well I called Cutler the best in his class when he came out. Best arm, best mechanics, and oh btw, he's winning. I can see why you still have your doubts.

I don't want to see any QB's or talk about any QB's or even think about any QB's :bat: lets focus on the trenches, until we own them its not gonna matter who the hades we march out there behind center :shades:

Except the first 3 years of his career and his sudden rise up the boards in the final month before the draft? These first 3 games clearly override the first 3 years.

He's always had a good arm about him, but his numbers have never been that good. I'm not condemning him just yet, but he in no way has done anything on his own to this point to establish himself as the top QB. The simple fact is that VY is a nut job and a suicide risk when people don't like him and Matty simply hasn't panned out. It's kind of like succeeding by default. I'm still giving Cutler a chance, but by no means am I proclaiming him a success story just yet. Also, it would be nice if you finally hit on a prospect I guess, eh?

If we draft a QB three years later, then we'll have to sit him for two years and let him learn. Thats five years before we get our "guy" at QB.

If we draft a QB in this draft, we're sitting him until both he and we are ready to play him. I'm sure a year or two from now, our o-line and run game will be set... so whoever we'll groom at QB will be set up for success.

Blah, Blah, blah. Well YTF I knew about stubborn people to silly to admit when they were dead wrong. Didn't know for sure about you until this post.

i'm using Cutler's whole career to judge him, and he's looked awesome

Agreed

I have diabetes in my family (it killed my mother).

I'm amazed he performed as well as he did before his diagnosis.

Diabetes makes you weak, have no energy, makes you shaky & clouds your thought pocesses.

Now that he is being treated his true talent is starting to shine.

I liked Cutler better than VY or Matt before the draft but now that I know his story I'm a true Jay Cutler fan except when he plays against the Texans.

Speaking of QB's .... Where do you guy's think Colt McCoy falls in the draft ?

He's putting up some solid numbers including an 80% completion percentage (leads NCAA) and a 14-1 TD/Int ratio (Tops in NCAA) 10.2 yards per att. (6th NCAA) 209.7 QB rating (2nd NCAA) and only sacked 2 times in 100 att. Toss in 278 rushing yards in 34 att , an 8.2 ypg avg. and 4 rushing TD's

I just cant get past my "blind homerism" and figure where he would / should fall in the draft. If you look strictly at the numbers ..... he compares favorably to any of the other QB's that will be available.

Someday, people will understand UT's O-line and offense created Benson and Young. I said this before Benson was drafted, I stand by it.

it'll be 2nd day......4th or somewhere after that. His health & weight will scare lots of teams away. The only way teams would look at drafting him earlier is if he had exceptional arm strength like a Brodie Croyle. Much like brodie, he'd also be a project & you'd better have him hit the weights hard cause otherwise, he'll likely end up like Croyle is now...sidelined with a season ending injury.

He's just not big enough; 210 lbs- & he just got that big this year, isn't gonna get it done in the NFL 8 out of 10 times.....Drew Brees..... is the exception to the rule. Add in that he's already shown the tendency to get hurt & that will drop him further.

As Kast says, stats aren't a good predictor of where he should or could go...especially now b/c UT has played absolutely no one. Get back to us after that murder's row October the longhorns have.

McCoy will be best served to stay until his senior year, which I think he will, for any real chance getting into the NFL. I think Hou-Tex did a good job summing up what will make him a second day prospect. If he adds some weight he could be a solid Backup but I don't see him as starter material in the NFL. He looks better starting off this year but... to be honest I think that might be more on Major Applewhite's influence then anyone else.

Anybody had a chance to watch Ball State play this year? This guy can play the QB position in the NFL IMO. Try and get a glimpse of them this year if you can. I have a feeling like they will go to a good bowl game this year so you may be able to see him play on a bigger stage as well.

/bump

Figure we better revive this thread .... Look's like we'll be in the market for a QB this offseason.

I agree with your general sentiment, and I have banged that drum for years now. However, at this point, our line is good enough to expect solid QB play. It's still not quite where we all want it, but we have some talent on the line finally.

We need to draft a QB that we can develop while Schaub holds down the position. Just don't draft a 1st rounder, please.

Agreed up there. Until yesterday, I honestly felt that they had a shot at getting a day one pick for Rosenfelds. If they were to move the guy to let him have his shot....you've got to back up MS up with his injury history. His fault...the o-lines fault...got to have a good prospect behind him. I'd never draft Chase Daniels to be my number one....I'd consider taking him for this offense if the price wasn't too steep. If he falls as short QBs tend to do, I think he would be a nice find after the fifth round.

Unless I'm reading Colt McCoy wrong....this guy isn't about the money. He wants to write his name up on the exes wall across from the Stadium. Chiles is a very talented freshman. But I believe McCoy does the full boat and stays in school.

numbers are meaningless for projecting players to the NFL, especially quarterbacks

Yeah Kast...and I know you're a big Tebow guy, look at what McCoy did this off season. I forget the Kansas LB who almost decapitated him last year...I remember the LB was drafted...anyway just look at McCoy's arms from his sophomore year to this year. That's muscle and hard work in the weight room. This guy isn't a natural runner....but he made himself become one because of this offense. My book: this guy has the fire to go to the next level. He's willing to pay the price and do what ever it takes. That's heart. Either a kid's got it or he doesn't. No delusions here. Heart won't be enough to over come OU. But I bet McCoy makes a game of it.
