Wow... never would have guessed. You act so different over there.

I'll take that as a...I'll just take it.

Now I have to moderate my behavior, statements, comments. This board has been a bit of my occasional playground over the last 10 years. Football related, I've meant everything I've written. same with entertainment. Politics? Who cares? Personal life? Nobody on this board or the other knows me, and I don't know them.

There's nobody I don't like on these boards. My picture on the other board is Chuck Bednarik. To me, he personifies American football. And EVERYONE on this and the other board knows who he is - the last 60 minute man.

Football is real - politics and Hollywood is fake, a farce and I'll treat them accordingly.

A JamTex weekly thread, now it feels like home. I predict a good game from Savage.

I tried logging in to my account in the other board and it wouldn't budge. Good thing this one worked fine. What the hell happened over there? I go on vacation and come back to crappy site over there.

There you are. Missed you, my friend. Time to bring in dbruder. He's hiding.

dbruder and H204me would be great additions over here. Although the repair update for HT.com is supposed to be installed at 9 tomorrow morning.

I'll go back, if it's fixed. I've been a member of this board longer, but I feel closer to the other board. Each have their own merits and share the same moron who thought Brooks Reed was Thor. Dang his handsome blonde hair...he had Will at a whisk and a brush of his golden locks.

I am interested in seeing how the offense is gelling at this point, and how well the 0-line is going to hold up. Just stoked that football is back!

Good morning fellow Texans fans! Just 5 more days until we get to see Texans football!
Looks like Osweiler might play as much as a half in this game according to O'brien. Does that mean O'brien is going to keep the ones in the game longer then usual?
They usually only play 1 or 2 series then the twos come in for a majority, then all the rest get their shot the last part of the game.
Guess we'll find out in 5 more days.

Definitely didn't mean any slight... you're one of the few posters over there with something worth reading (most of the ones that have shown up here as well).

Just seems like you're more of a truant officer over there & with that board seemingly full of 12 year old groupies... that's how anyone over 30 is going to come across.

It would make sense that XSF will get better after actually playing all season. Allen may or may not be an improvement over Brooks, but he definitely won't be a drop off. & "everyone" believes Martin will be an improvement over Ben Jones.

The key is going to be consistency which comes from working together. So the sooner Devlin picks a center, the better.
I see Allen a significant upgrade over Brooks. Brooks did not have a nasty streak and did not tend to "finish off" his opponents. Neither will be problems you will see with Allen.

I'm hoping that the 49ers have solved their grass field problems that they have consistently had for the past 2 years.................ie., clumps of sod coming out in handfuls all over the field during every use.

Completely agree. Allen is better in every way over Brooks. Him, Martin and XSF will really solidify the middle of the offensive line. Now the Texans just need quality Tackles to go along with that middle. Brown's replacement needs to be found soon. He's getting up there in age and I see more injuries to him as a result. Hate to lose him. He was the best offensive lineman the Texans ever had, but every ones career ends at some point and his is coming up.

Most people are high on Allen... I just didn't want to be presumptuous as a lot of folks here were higher on Brooks than I've ever been.

Quality tackles would be nice, especially if we're playing the defensive fronts we played last year. Then again, Denver, KC, Oakland... all on our schedule this season, so yeah, our tackles need to be on their A game.

But... if Brock can get the ball out on time, navigate the pocket, & is able to step up into the void created by X, Martin, & Allen our tackles may be enough to get us through the season.

I think with a new QB and all the new pieces on offense it is a good idea to give the first unit a lot of reps in all the preseason games.

The danger in giving the ones "lots of reps" is injury. We don't want our starters getting hurt before the season even begins. The 3rd game of preseason is for tuning up the starters with 3 quarters of play. It should stay that way. Rest the starters in the fourth game and let those on the bubble duke it out for roster spots. That's how it's always been and that's how it should continue. 1st game, starters play 1, maybe 2 series. 2nd game starters play a quarter to a half. 3rd game starters play 3 quartets. 4th game starters sit and rest and the players on the bubble earn their roster spot.

If this was your standard preseason scenario, I would totally agree with you, but I think getting this offense to gel is a higher priority than avoiding injury at this point. This is a fairly unique situation, a team that has a chance to make a serious run in the playoffs with a completely retooled offense. I say the benefit of working the kinks out of the offense out weighs the risks.

Is it really worth losing one or more of those pieces in preseason and risk the whole season for the value of building chemistry? The chemistry will come. It takes time and practice. The building up of the ones from preseason game 1 to game 3 is what helps that. There is a legitimate argument here. It's a hard debate, but I really wouldn't want to lose even 1 of our starters. Next man up is good, but the starters are much better.

Risk of losing players vs. risk of losing games - pick your poison. One game could be the difference maker at the end of the season determining if we advance to post-season or not.

You can't play afraid. Getting injured in PS, getting injured in week 1, getting injured in practice, it can happen. Nothing you can really do about that.

The PS is for getting ready for the regular season. I don't want to see the Texans offense trying to figure things out against Chicago and Kansas City. That's what the damn PS is for. Otherwise scrap the PS and just crank it up like college does.

The Texans D started slow last season. You can come up with a thousand reasons why but could one have been because the starting unit never played a single down together in the PS?

I get the injury risks but this offense needs to play as much as they can at real game speed before the real bullets start flying.

I just hope that our O-line can keep Osweiller healthy. We paid a lot of money for a potentially good QB and right now our O-line is a hot mess. Lets hope the coaching staff can fix it quickly because when the foundation of your house crumbles....

I hate to say it but my biggest fear is Savage goes out and lights the 49's up. Then the 50 or so threads about Savage should start, rick smith paid to much for Brock, QB controversy, followed by endless polls, "She will get up. He will get up...... Everyone will get up, It will be anarchy".

I'm not sure where H204me is but Bruder has been on radio silent for a while now. He's got him a new lady friend, I'm sure shes keeping him busy. :ahhaha:

I just want to see, just one time. And I'm betting that I will. Weeden launch a 60 yarder to Will Fuller with about a 10 yard lead on any DB. Preferably a Play Action Pass if I was the OC .

Or maybe I've just been playing too much Madden.

Gotta play with the new toys, don't you?

I'm totally with you on this. They could use all the preseason reps they can get IMHO to hit the ground running (or throwing :)) in the season opener.

If this was a team with a starting QB with 2-3 seasons under his belt, I'd agree with you completely. But its not. I would hope that O'Brien wants to see success from his offense rather than simply counting the number of series played. I mean, suppose they do what you say and only play the starters for the first two series and they end up being 3-and-outs? What good would that be? No, give them time to get something done. If the starters finish off a 8-10 play drive with a TD on the first series, then I've seen enough for the first preseason game and they get to sit and watch the two's and three's.

We still have Lonnie Ballentine (that's his name, right?) bouncing around? I'll be curious to see if he ever amounts to anything at all, even ST player.

I agree with you as well. This pre season is a little different since we have a lot of new talent on offense. Let them go through some adversity on the field. Will it change how they play in regular season idk but I know that the Texans will be more prepared come week 1 with a full game of starters playing before first game. I say 1st half. Maybe 1st quarter. Without Brock but I want to see our running back and o line work because I don't think our offense will produce a whole lot without a run game. Defenses will jam Fuller until he learns how to break that. D hop will still get double covered until we prove we can have big plays from other people. TE's scare me right now. No dual threat there makes us predictable. So our run game and OLine have to work to keep our offense in 3rd and short or manageable barring penalties which will happen. Honestly I'm just look at the offense side of the ball first game. Defense will be good but San Fran offense I think is mediocre hard to judge.

Good morning Texans fans! Just 3 more days until we have Texans Football!
LLLLLLET'S GET READY TO RRRRRUMBLLLLLLLLLLLE! ! !

Just 2 more days! The day after tomorrow we'll be firing up our pits and smokers and getting the beer on ice early for the game. It's almost here fellas and it's almost time to get a glimpse of what our Texans will do and what this shiny new offense will look like.

ROCK AND ROLL TEXANS! ! !

I just looked at the game schedule on NFL.com....

Are we really the last dang team to play their first pre season game?????...dang....this wait is painful....

2016 SEASON PREVIEW: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Just a few seasons ago, the San Francisco 49ers boasted one of the league’s best defenses under former head coach Jim Harbaugh, and had made it to the NFC Championship games three years in a row, including one Super Bowl trip. Fast-forward to 2016, and the 49ers are looking to start the season with their third different head coach in three seasons, and the quarterback that led them to the Super Bowl appears to be on a career downslope after an injury-plagued 2015. With one of the league’s worst offense’s last season and a defense that struggled to replace several key retirees, the 49ers hope Chip Kelly’s offensive acumen and a solid draft will start to turn things around in the Bay Area.

Colin Kaepernick or Blaine Gabbert the answer at QB in 2016?
Quarterbacks: 31st in PFF’s season preview rankings

Chip Kelly is famous for taking below-average quarterbacks and turning them into what appears to be Pro-Bowl-caliber talent. Drafted just 25 spots from each other, Gabbert and Kaepernick will have a quarterback competition in training camp. Kaepernick clearly has produced a more successful career to date, but Gabbert has shown small signs of life since a disastrous rookie season in Jacksonville, where he turned in the worst grade we’ve ever seen in the PFF era (since 2007). While both graded poorly last year, Gabbert has shown an ability to play well given the right set of circumstances. Kaepernick’s career arc looks similar to Robert Griffin III’s thus far—both playing spectacularly as rookies (Kaep’s 2012 was basically his rookie year, as he logged just 20 snaps in 2011), but never seeing that same success again and badly struggling in years three and four. If Chip Kelly can work his magic with either QB, 2016 won’t be as bleak as it looks on paper now.

Carlos Hyde has tools to succeed in Chip Kelly’s offense
Running backs: 18th

When Carlos Hyde has been given the opportunity, he has impressed, forcing 57 missed tackles on just 198 carries. He has averaged 2.8 yards per attempt after contact in his career, a rate that matches Marshawn Lynch’s career average. Chip Kelly’s system didn’t match DeMarco Murray’s running style in Philadelphia, but that shouldn’t be a problem for Hyde; the latter shows patience in zone runs and has the vision, speed, and agility to find and hit the hole quickly. Look no further than Hyde’s 2015 Week 1 show against the Minnesota Vikings and you’ll see the makings of a top-tier HB—he just needs to prove it over the course of a season.

Will Torrey Smith become WR No. 1 or can another step up?
Receiving corps: 31st

The receiving group looks bleak for the 49ers. Torrey Smith hauled in the fewest targets of his career last season, Eric Rogers comes from the CFL, Quinton Patton has a drop problem, and Aaron Burbridge (Michigan State) is a rookie. On the bright side, Smith was likely limited by the QB situation last season—combined with a run-first offense—Patton forced seven missed tackles on just 30 receptions, and Burbridge was a playmaker for Michigan State and graded very well in 2015. TEs Vance McDonald and Garrett Celek will likely be utilized much more in the passing game this season; the No. 2 tight end in Chip Kelly’s system last year, Brent Celek, gained more receiving yards in Philadelphia than either McDonald or Garrett Celek in 2015.

First-rounder Joshua Garnett has potential to become top-tier run-blocker
Offensive line: 26th

The 49ers traded up into the first round to draft Garnett, the top-graded college guard from 2015. While PFF actually had a second-round grade on Garnett, he is a physical guard that excelled in Stanford’s power-run scheme. He was excellent on the move, played with good leverage, and was dominant on the playside of running plays. Garnett did struggle against now-teammate DeForest Buckner (Oregon), backside cuts in zone, and isn’t particularly strong in pass-protection. If he can clean up the issues he had in college, though, he has the ability to immediately make an impact in the league and become one of the NFL’s best run-blocking guards early in his career.

Defensive end DeForest Buckner a must-watch rookie
Front-seven: 23rd

Fielding two former Oregon defensive lineman, the 49ers are building a front-seven that can be really good if everything comes together. 2016 first-round pick DeForest Buckner terrorized everyone he faced the past two years in college, Arik Armstead impressed as a pass-rusher in limited snaps in 2015, and NT Ian Williams stuffs the run well. NaVorro Bowman struggled in his first season back after a devastating knee injury in the 2014 NFC Championship game, but if he can get back to his pre-injury levels, the 49ers front-seven will improve greatly because of it. If Buckner performs like the DE we expect him to be, Armstead continues to develop, and Bowman returns to form, San Francisco should see defensive performances closer to the Jim Harbaugh-coached days. A lot of “if”s need to fall into place for that to happen, and we haven’t even mentioned Gerald Hodges’ struggles and Ahmad Brooks’ declining play.

Heavily-addressed cornerback group will be stressed
Secondary: 17th

The return of Antoine Bethea will greatly help this group. While the 49ers’ defense struggled last season overall, the secondary was decent, and should be even better this year. They addressed cornerback depth by drafting three CBs, highlighted by the selection of Mississippi State’s Will Redmond. S Eric Reid has played well in his short career, but hasn’t lived up to his first-round status yet; the same can be said for CB Tramaine Brock. New defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil will run man-press heavily, which puts his cornerbacks in difficult positions. With the Browns, O’Neil’s cornerbacks excelled in 2014, but struggled in 2015. Redmond may not see much playing time this year, but he provides necessary depth behind Jimmie Ward and Brock if either of them struggle to adjust to the scheme.

2016 SEASON PREVIEW: HOUSTON TEXANS

After a playoff campaign in 2015 and a big-money free-agent acquisition at the quarterback position, expectations are high in Houston—fortunately, with good reason. Quarterback is truly the only position on the roster with major question marks, and their receiving corps is the only other unit ranking below-average for PFF—and that’s only because we don’t yet know how their first- and second-year contributors will pan out. Now, to the rankings:

Brock Osweiler’s ability still major question entering season
Quarterbacks: 28th in PFF’s preseason rankings

I would like to say that the Texans can’t get worse than Brian Hoyer at quarterback, but truthfully, we have no clue what to expect from Brock Osweiler (Broncos). He has just 642 snaps to his name in the NFL, and accumulated a slightly negative passing grade over that span. There’s not much more to say, as the sample size is too small to make any definitive statement.

Lamar Miller signing one of best moves of offseason
Running backs: Ninth

Of all the offseason moves the Texans made, Lamar Miller (Dolphins) is likely to be the most effective upgrade. Miller finished sixth and fourth the past two seasons in PFF rushing grades among NFL RBs, despite not finishing higher than 14th in attempts either year. What’s possibly even more telling is that all that production came behind the lowest-graded run-blocking O-line in the NFL both seasons. On a snap-for-snap basis, Miller has been one of the best backs in the NFL, but it remains to be seen whether or not that he can hold up with a high-end workload.

Young receivers must step up behind DeAndre Hopkins
Receiving corps: 19th

There’s obviously potential here, with Jaelen Strong (third-round pick in 2015), Braxton Miller (third-round pick in 2016, Ohio State), and Will Fuller (first-round pick in 2016, Notre Dame) assuming large roles, though none of those players bring any sort of certainty at this point. What is certain, though, is that the Texans at least have a hands-down, true No. 1 receiver in DeAndre Hopkins. Only Julio Jones and Antonio Brown earned higher receiving grades a season ago, though both of those guys had top-10-graded quarterbacks throwing them the ball. What makes Hopkins special is that it really doesn’t matter where the ball is thrown—he’s able to come down with it. He can only do so much, though, and one of the aforementioned younger players needs to prove themselves worthy to justify the Texans being underrated here at 19th.

All signs point to Fuller being the No. 2 receiver. While defenses will need to account for his speed, the rookie has to add more strength on his underneath routes to fully compliment Hopkins. 56.2 percent of Fuller’s yards came on deep balls a season ago, a fairly unsustainable percentage in the NFL.

New faces along offensive could be net upgrade
Offensive line: 11th

Exit center Ben Jones (Titans) and right guard Brandon Brooks (Eagles), and enter Nick Martin (Notre Dame) and Jeff Allen (Chiefs). There is reason to believe the result of that trade-off could be a net upgrade in Houston. Martin was our second-ranked center in this year’s draft, and if he’s even close to as effective as his brother, Zack Martin (Cowboys), was as a rookie he’ll easily replace Jones’ production. Brooks, on the other hand, will be a much bigger loss. He was a top-10 guard in 2013 and 2014 before slipping back a little bit a year ago. While his replacement, Allen, graded out higher a year ago, it was the former Chief’s first positively-graded season of his career, and it came on only 593 snaps. If the line is going to get back to its top-10 form from years past, they’ll need left tackle Duane Brown to bounce back from a down 2015, where he saw his overall grade drop by almost 16 points.

Can Jadeveon Clowney take another step forward?
Front-seven: Eighth

We’ll assume J.J. Watt will be back and fully healthy for the start of the season, but even if he won’t be, this is still a talented group. All eyes will be on Jadeveon Clowney, as he quietly took a huge step forward in year two, and looks poised to do so again with more playing time in year three. The former No. 1 overall pick recorded the 10th-best run stop percentage of any 3-4 outside linebacker last season. The true unsung hero of the Texans’ front-seven last season, though, was fellow outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus. After he looked to be a bust early on in his career, Mercilus turned it around in a big way in 2015, finishing among the top-10 at his position in both pass-rushing productivity and run-stop percentage. The only thing keeping this group from being a top-five unit is the health of inside linebacker Brian Cushing. Last season, Cushing didn’t look near the player we saw early on in his career, and it’s worrisome that, with all his injuries, he may never get back to that level.

Texans’ cornerback trio approaching elite status?
Secondary: 10th

Depending on the development of last year’s first-round pick, Kevin Johnson, the Texans’ cornerback trio could be an elite group. Johnathan Joseph was quietly anAll-Pro level player a year ago, while Kareem Jackson is only a year removed from grading out as a top-10 corner. Johnson graded out right around average as a rookie in 818 snaps, but that’s not bad at all for a player’s first pro season, as we’ve seen the learning curve at CB to be one of the steepest of any position in the league.

Houston grades out better in every position group according to PFF.
This should be a preseason game 1 victory for our Texans.

I have a feeling Mike Vrable will not be with us long. This is not the first time that I have heard of someone trying to snatch him away from us. Better use him well while we have him.

Don't worry. Kelley interviewed both coaches in they offseason and both turned him down.

Vrabel and Butler were both interviewed right after Kelley took the job with the 49er's.

on the way to wave runner this morning, radio talking head quoted someone as saying on paper the Texans O line ranked #4. I almost ran off the road. It was acknowledged that Brown had to return healthy as well as Newton; also the line had to jell with each other. Su'a Fila and Allen were mentioned as having very good camp.

And when RC retires Vrable might be taking over the DC job.
