Post Draft 53 Man Roster Prediction

Lovie has an interesting quote here. Maybe they carry 7 LBs on 53?

“ "We have a set number, but numbers are always flexible," Smith said. "Gameday most of the time, we’re going to dress at least eight defensive linemen. We’re going to dress at least six linebackers. From there, the numbers get a little bit flexible."”

The preseason games are over. Here is my final 53 man roster projection!

(24) Offense:

(3) QB: Mills, Allen, Driskel

(5) RB: Pierce, Mack, Burkhead, Ogunbowale, Freeman

(5) WR: Cooks, Collins, Conley, Moore, Dorsett

(3) TE: Jordan, Brown, Quitoriano

(3) OT: Tunsil, Howard, Deculus

(3) OG: Green, Cann, Mccray

(2) OC: Britt, Quessenberry

(26) Defense:

(6) DE: Greenard, Hughes, Green, Addison, Okoronkwo, Rivers

(4) DT: Collins, Lopez, Hinish, Booker

(3) OLB: Grugier-Hill, Reeves-Maybin, Wallow

(3) MLB: Kirksey, Harris, Cashman

(5) CB: Stingley, Nelson, King, Smith, Yiadom

(3) FS: Owens, Murray, Brooks

(2) SS: Pitre, Stewart

(3) Specialists:

(1) K: Fairbairn

(1) P: Johnston

(1) LS: Weeks

Offense:

QB? Ok.

RB? Pierce and Mack are the only locks. Freeman has helped himself by playing FB. I wouldn't be greatly surprised if Burkhead is cut, and possibly brought back later in the season if there is an injury to one of the other guys. Dare Ogunbawale, would be my 4th RB if I kept 4. However, I don't know how much they like FB Hairston or FB Quessenberry. I have heard the Texans really like Hairston's versatility.

WR? Cooks and Collins are the only real locks. Moore and Conley are just placeholders until we can find better. I wouldn't be surprised if Dorsett and Jalen Camp beat out either Moore or Conley...or both. The Texans may only keep 4 WR's, and keep an extra TE.

TE? Brown and Jordan are the only locks, but will keep at least 3. Which one will be the 3rd TE is the question. The young TE's have all shown flashes. The Texans could keep 4 TE's on the active roster, or just keep 3, and put 1 or 2 on the Practice squad.

OT? Tunsil & Howard are the Starters. Heck will be the Swing. Deculus would be a practice squad guy...if he makes that.

G? Cann, Green, & Scharping. I think McCray is the odd man out.

C? Britt is the starter. I can see both Quessenberry and Morrissey making the 53, but the lead would go to whichever one is able to play G.

Defense:

DE? Greenard, Okoronkwo, Green, Hughes...5th would be a toss-up between Addison and Rivers. I don't think we keep 6.

DT? Collins and Lopez are locks. Hinish has shined, so I think he gets a slot. I think they'll keep Booker because he can play both DT and DE. The 5th would be a toss-up between Blacklock and Dwumfour.

OLB? Kamu Grugier-Hill, Garret Wallow, Kevin Pierre-Louis, Jake Hansen, and Christian Harris (if he's ready to go). Jalen Reeves-Maybin makes it if Christian Harris isn't ready at the start of the season.

MLB? Christian Kirksey & Blake Cashman. Neville Hewitt possibly, some of the OLB's can also play MLB.

CB? Nelson and Stingley are the starters. Tavierre Thomas and Desmond King II are locks in my mind. Tremon Smith will also be there. Kendall Sheffield and Isaac Yiadom are the bubble guys, and one, or both could be kept.

S? Jonathan Owens & Jalen Pitre are locks. Terrence Brooks, M.J. Stewart, Eric Murray, Grayland Arnold are fighting over the remaining slots. I think the Texans like Murray, so he may have the lead, but I like Stewart and Brooks better. I have also liked some of the things I have seen from Grayland Arnold, but he's the longshot. Tristin McCollum is a practice squad guy.

I'm keeping Heck and cutting Freeman. Looking on the ww for a slot, but at this point I would also take an outside receiver and play Cooks in the slot, although that's not optimal. I'm also open to trading for a guy. Or signing Beasley after week 1.

TE, I'm hoping the Bills cut Howard or would be willing to trade a 3rd for Gesicki. He also would solve slot WR issues.

Great job
Disagree on Heck... I think Deculus could be stashed on the PS, but Heck is not the answer

Awful news for Rivers! His career has been plagued by injuries and just when it looks like he’s fully healthy and putting it all together this happens.

Updated roster looks like 9 DL. I’ll keep Kevin Pierre-Louis to bring the LB total to 7 since Wallow/Harris are rehabbing injuries.
Hopefully they can add a nice depth piece after cut downs. Neither Pierre-Louis or Maybin have impressed me and Hewitt has been abymissal

I’m moreso hoping that a healthy Harris makes the LB group look improved. I don’t have Hewitt making this team.

Will be after he gets more coaching and strength, but not this early.

I think the position of swing OT is more backup RT for this team. If Tunsil is out then Howard will move over to RT.

Right now Heck is a little better LT than Deculus. Though both are below average LTs you don’t want starting games at that spot. They are basically equal at RT. They can both be serviceable starters at the position for a stretch of games which is what you’d hope for from a backup.

The difference is Deculus is a rookie who has room to grow while Heck is basically maxed out given his talent level. I don’t think you can hide Deculus on the practice squad either. This means you keep the rookie imo.

But maybe they keep both which makes my entire post meaningless?

Heck sucks even @ RT in pass pro, barely serviceable in the running game. I expect more out of Deculus, but it will probably be next year unless Warhop is a genius. They really need to pick up someone

I would prefer they had brought back Geron Christian. But don’t think he’s a good scheme fit. I think they can get by with Deculus and/or Heck. Especially if Howard/Tunsil stay healthy 😉

Deculus frame and lack of high end atheleticism feels more like a guard, but a backup swing tackle as a plus makes me think he is the guy you keep. Heck is replacable and feels like can be stuffed on PS with less of a chance someone steals him

Is Heck PS eligible? If he is then I agree just stuff him there. I think a team would be more likely to poach Deculus as well. Unless Tim Kelly is working somewhere…

This is what I'm projecting:

QB (2): Mills, Allen
RB (4): Pierce, Mack, Ogunbowale, Freeman
* Burkhead doesn't look good. I think
Ogunbowale and Freeman give more
diversity for a run-first offense.
FB (1): Hairston
TE (3): Jordan, Brown, Quintotiano
* I can see them keeping 4, but I don't think
the forth is currently on the roster.
WR (6): Cooks, Collins, Moore, Conley, Camp, Dorsett
* JJ3 has potential, but I think they should
be able to get him on the PS.
OT (4): Tunsil, Howard, Deculus, Heck
* Hope the starters stay healthy. Heck and
Deculus are unimpressive in pass
protection.
OG (3): Green, Cann, McCray
* I'll be surprised if Scharping remains.
C (2): Britt, Quessenberry

DE (5): Greenard, Hughes, Addison, Green, Okoronkwo
DT (4): Lopez, Collins, Hinish, Booker
LB (6): Harris, Gruger-Hill, Kirksey, Pierre-Louis, Wallow, Cashman
* This was a tough one to call.
CB (6): Stingley, Nelson, King, Thomas, T. Smith, Yiadom
S (4): Pitre, Stewart, Owens, Brooks
* Maybe Murray stays on, but I wouldn't be
surprised if he's cut.

Deculus is the better straight line Run blocker, but is severely limited in pass blocking. He has dead feet, and cannot move well enough to be a viable pass protector. If he makes it in the NFL, he'll either make it at G, or greatly improve his feet speed to play at OT. Deculus is a practice squad guy. Heck and Steckler both make better swing tackle options, and I don't like either one of them. I have a feeling we'll be searching the waiver wire for a good swing tackle, because we don't really have one.

All sarcasm aside, sad there isn’t real football talk on a subject that should have consumed double digit pages. Then the hundreds of possible free agents to be, come Tuesday afternoon. Guess it’s wait and see what happens :specnatz:

picked #66 overall in 2021 draft, Mills selected by Texans #67.

This is why you don’t listen to the talking heads of the media.

You know we have a thread for that where all have been mentioned already?

We don’t have threads that stay on topic.

I don’t see what’s the difference to listing information that should be in one thread but randomly ends up in another.

Kind of the same thing we have with preseason threads debating WRs, and the Watson Sexual Assault thread and whatever that’s up to these days.

(This is sarcasm and a joke for those of you who didn’t pick up on it)

Anyone care to do a run down of who is left. I kinda liked Weddington, hope we can get him on the practice squad.

Conley gone. So who’s left?

I think we're at 53 according to the mothership roster.

As far as WR- Collins,Cook,Dorsett and Moore is it. Some sure to be added soon

4 WR but also have ability to elevate PS players if needed I believe. I do expect 5 WRs however.

Only 3 TEs. Would not be surprised to see all skill positions get a waiver wire upgrade.

Or what seems to be the standard trade package for cut downs: 6th round pick for player + 7th.
