Playoffs...Divisional Round...New England Patriots!

F it. Texans win, Clowney has a legendary showing and we smack Brady up.

What do we have to lose? We lose this one, oh well. We came far for a bruised and battered team with no QB...we win? Superbowl. This would be the win that would transform this franchise. I think we have a shot.

I was thinking the other day that the Texans don't corner blitz very often. I'd like to see that added to the defensive mix. Bringing blindside pressure on Brady, when it's not a tendency they should expect. And DBs are going to have to jam guys at the line and not let them have uncontested release at the snap. Really jam them to the point of drawing a few flags and get in thier heads.
Get f'n dirty and play hard

From my couch it looks like it would be so easy to beat Brady.

Take away the crossing routes. Don't man up on the inside receivers. Know the are going to cross the field & be ready for them. Do not lead with your helmet. Do not hit them in the head. Blow them the f'ck up if they even look like they think the ball is coming their way.

The Patriots offense is a bit more complex than say the Raiders offense or most offenses in the NFL. There is a lot of pre snap adjustment, and Brady checks in and out of plays based on how the defense lines up. The Receivers understand how to read the defense the same way Brady does, so they find the holes in the zones and sit there.

The best formula to hold the Patriots offense in check is simple, but hard to execute otherwise everyone would be able to do it…..You need to bring pressure on a consistent basis from the edges and inside with 3 or 4 men. And, you need to drop 7-8 into coverage to flood the zones. This has to be disguised because if you show dropping 7-8, Brady will check into a run. Crennel has to come up with disguises to show his true intentions.

I'm new to the board, so hello everyone.

Been reading the keys to beating the Patriots.

I agree with everyone here saying that the key is defense. Not only must the defense hold Brady and not let them score and convert 3rd downs, but the defense has to get a takeaway or two. The defense needs to get pressure consistently, and flood the zones. Pressure needs to be generated with 3 or 4 guys, and 7-8 guys need to drop. That is the formula. Now, it's easier said than done, but every team that has beat the Patriots does so by not selling the farm to get to Brady and dropping a bunch of players in the middle of the field. The Patriots offense must be held to 20 points or lower.

The stats say Houston may be able to do this. However, we all know the Houston defense doesn't typically travel well. It's a completely different defense at home vs. say at Foxborough. I think on average this year, the Texans give up 8 more points per game on the road vs. at home. I think a big part of this is the crowd and how it fires up the defense. The defense will need to play better on the road and this is the time to do it.

On offense….We have the lowest or close to the lowest ranked scoring offense. The Patriots defense is the #1 scoring defense, holding teams to like 15.5 points per game. Those 2 things don't align well. Our defense and ST need to win the field position battle to give Brock a short field. Miller has to be the key strategy here, and I would look to not run Miller, but get Miller out into pass routes on the Patriots LB's. The Patriots have the #4 rushing defense, and they will be ready to stop Miller running. The best chance to use Miller in this game is to get him out into pass routes. I would not only line him up in the backfield, but also on the line like a WR. Move Miller all over the field and keep the Patriots defense adjusting.

Brock is also going to have to use his legs a bit in this game. There will be running lanes for Brock when he drops back to pass. He has to take chances running it to keep the Patriots front 7 honest. And finally, our receivers are going to have to win some 1:1 battles vs the Patriots. Pretty simple, but has to happen and Brock needs to take what the Patriots will give him. The Patriots defense likes to keep things in front of them. They don't give up the big play. So, Brock needs to dink and dunk and just be patient. The Patriots are very good at making teams impatient. We need to play their game and hope they make a mistake that we can capitalize on.

#1 in yards per game. That's a far cry from the #1 defense. The NFL is about scoring points.

So if we put the Pats D on this Texans team we would have the #1 defense?

I don't care what the ppg stats say. When you take into account what our defense has had to work with given the screwups all year by our offense/special teams compared to the Pats no other defense would have been able to perform as well as our's.

That's a great point. Complimentary football for sure.

Stats don't mean much now. This is the post-season. If you can't generate enough motivation, a winning game plan and flawless execution, you don't deserve to be here or continue. I wound't worry too much about stats. Just put a good plan in place, be prepared to adjust to that plan, and go out and play some football.

Need our offense to show some of its firepower

I think we beat the Pats once out of 5 games. Hopefully that once is this Saturday!

If we're going to win this game, we have to win it last night, today, and tomorrow. In other words, the coaches have to go into Saturday with the right game plan!

If we have several short drives and three and outs throughout the game we can expect a fast starting Texans defense to tire due to too much time on the field. That will lead to our top rated defense being victimized by Tom Brady and the Pats. Not that Tom and the Pats need our defense to be tired but a fairly close game could easily get out of hand starting mid way through the third quarter.

My prediction
Pats 42 Texans 13

If only we had a well coached and quarterbacked offense we could beat anybody in the league during the playoffs. Even to the tune of winning a title.

Patriots open as the largest favorite in 18 years. The 98-99 Vikings were a 16.5 point favorite over the Cardinals that year, Cardinals covered but lost 41-21.

"During the Super Bowl-era, which dates back to 1966, there have only been five playoff games where a team was favored by 15 points or more. In those five games, the favorite has gone 4-1 straight-up and 3-2 against the spread."

"The only time the underdog actually won came in Super Bowl III, when the 18-point underdog New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts 19-7. If you're wondering why Joe Namath's guarantee was such a big deal, there's your answer."

So nice of the NFL to schedule a practice game for the Patriots before they play their playoff game on January 18.

My prediction is that this is going to be ugly and we'll all be in a bad mood next Monday.

I agree. Crennel will have a crappy game plan and Brady will throw for a bazillion yards. Blount will get 120 and we lose 37-14.

I just don't see a way the Texans come out on top here. The STs continues to be garbage, the return game/coverage that is. Novak and Lechler have been great. If the Texans have another 3rd quarter like they did against the raiders it will be over, if they are even still in it by then.

This team has the Texans number. I'm afraid that ain't changing this weekend. I'm always hopeful but.....

Well, since I'm not expecting much, the mood shouldn't be bad. I think my bad mood came when the Dolphins decided to vacation early. Now it's pretty much like, thank you sir may I have another, and we'll try this again next year.

Apparently, 6 other teams have the Texans number this year.

Seriously, you never know what could happen. I've seen Brady lay an egg before in big games and throw for 2 INT's. But even if Brady has a mediocre game by his standards, the Texans still have to score on the #1 scoring defense. They are particularly good in the red zone and limiting 3rd down conversions. They give up some yards but pinch tight in the red zone.

I have about zero interest in this game, to me it feels like it's already the post season. I almost wish the Texans could just skip it and keep their dignity.

You can't believe the above. They have no idea what is going on. They got the Super Bowl III score wrong.

I want to say the Texans are going to get rolled, but I just have this feeling that they are going to play much better than expected.

All year they've been under fire. The players, the coaches, the front office....

They aren't seen as a contender like games in the past. They are seen as fodder.

They are a caged animal. And the thing is, they have the talent to actually make some noise.

I think they'll still lose, but I don't expect this to be the ass kickings of years past.

Tyler Irvin better be inactive for this game. We've all seen what one bad return man can do (cough cough Jacoby Jones)

If you haven't heard AJ Bouye's interview after the Raiders game give it a listen. Gives you great insight into this team's mindset right now.

He heard a national media guy the day of the game say they had to get Amari Cooper on the Texans corners because he's BETTER than them. Bouye and the rest of the secondary took that personally and shut Cooper down to the tune of 2 catches for 10 yards on 10 targets.

The bulletin board material for the Raiders game is nothing compared to what they'll be getting this week. Everybody is going to tell them that they are going to get slaughtered. But this team will bottle up all that motivation and unleash it on the Pats Saturday!

The biggest recipe for an upset in any sport is two-sided:

1) One team hearing they're gonna get their butts kicked but believing they'll win.

2) One team believing what people that aren't gonna be playing are saying.

It is pretty easy to shut Cooper down when you have a rookie first time starter throwing to him. Pick a wr this week with Brady throwing to him and shut him down. Then you are doing something.

I don't have any high expectations for my Texans. I don't want to see another Hoyeresque playoff type game but it leads to an improvement at the position so be it. I hope the defense can hold its own to keep it close but the offense and special teams can't make the idiotic mistakes they made in the first go round.

Patriots 27
Texans 20

Can anyone comment on the potential loss of Demps? How much confidence do you have in Eddie Pleasant? Will he get all of Demps' snaps? How much single high coverage will the Texans play with Pleasant on Bennett? Thanks.

Demps is a good vet .... maybe this is for the best maybe the younger guys will have more speed IDK or maybe they will finally shine and hopefully they will just do there job and make plays ..????

what I wanna know other then blunt who is the rb catching the balls out the back field for the patriots those are the ones that usually kill us and who is the WR for the pats are we really going to let Amendola and Elderman Beat us ..???? can Jackson and J joe really not cover them ..???

like the pats Def racks usually changes up the def depending on who we are playing or like most of the time he does Half man and half ZOne or turtle shell some times he does all Man 2 man esp if our veteran Corners are playing good since they have been playing together for like 7 years knowing we are playing brady we will have both safties high and refuse to let brady beat us deep or mid and hopefully or d line can stop your running game seems yall use a mixture of pass catching RB

I think Norg just submitted his thesis in Norg studies.

ok lets just be real I think Racks is just praying to jesus that the pats don't score 31 points on us

if we can at least score 24 points on the pats I would be happy LOL

I like how O'b is framing this game. None of the BS matters. Not that game way back in week 3, not the playoff stomp of 2012. Not the point spread, not the betting action. Not the media.

This game is about the 46 guys who will dress for the game This week's preparation matters. How these guys take the field on Saturday matters. The rest is just noise.

Texans 27, Patriots 24

We win a thriller in overtime at Foxborough.
And we finally advance to the AFC Championship!

A win at Pitt or KC away from coming home for Super Bowl 51!

NRG Stadium would be rockin' if the Texans are there.

I'm on board! Nothing to lose at all.
All we can do is shock the world with a win.

It feels like house money to me. Especially with no J.J. Watt.

If you had told me we would be playing this game after Watt went down for the season in that regular-season game at Foxborough back in Week 3 or so, I'd have taken it in a heart beat.

We're in a pretty good spot. A lot of teams would like to be in our spot.
Bengals and Browns haven't won a playoff game in ages, for example.
Ditto for the Lions. We're blessed in a lot of ways. We really are.

And if J.J. Watt does come back 100 % next year our defense has a chance to become as special as any in the history of the game. Think 2000 Ravens and 1985 Bears.
