Doesn't matter who were on the Oline; the fact remains that they were ranked 8th in protection.

Similarly, on defense, the team still ranked 7th in yard allowed and 9th in points allowed.

I was rewatching the playoff game against the Pats.

The Texans were trailing 13-17 at the half before Schaub's meltdown to start the second half.
The Pats had the ball first and scored to make it 13-24.
It seems to press Schaub to produce and he didn't respond well to such adversity.

On 3rd and 5, Schaub did well to evade pressure, only to throw the ball to nobody as the defender was already falling down.

The D hold, but on the next drive, Schaub just made a bad throw on 3rd and 7 (too low such that the LB was able to jump up and snatch the ball for the Int.)

That's what a middle tier QB gets you.
A mistake when he can't ill-afford it.


And let's not forget how Schaub missed a wide open AJ in the back of the end zone (by a mile) even though he was staring at the receiver the whole time.

Yep, but if Schaub had been healthy in 2011 the Texans would've won the SB according to some.

I guess the purpose for my original response was you said n.c. made some "head scratcher" decisions. I've seen a lot of prove it contracts handed out at a bit more then necessary but nothing egregious. What's the head scratcher?

One of the best film analysis of Mills - good and bad. Has enough good to be worth a three, but too much bad to overcome to have a high ceiling.

It'll be up to the coaching to develop this kid and he should be thrown into the deep end the last half of the season.

This is unfortunate because he likely needs a lot more time to develop, but the organization needs to decide if a QB will be the highest priority in 2022.

I’ve heard Pep being referred to as the Texans QB coach. Reading Drew Dougherty on the Texans website discussing the lead up to this weekends mini camp he said that Kelly is the OC but Pep was added to the mix as the passing game coordinator. Wonder if that is an increase in his input in game planning or if it’s just another name for QB coach. Sounds like he’s going to be more involved in the O than I thought.

I think Kelly will eventually be gone once the Watson saga is over and he's another team's problem. I could see Kelly working for Alabama at some point.

Beat me to the reply. I agree, Kelly was kept in the event Watson was staying but now that everyone in the football world knows Watson played his last game as a Texan in 2020.....Pep will be taking over and Kelly will be shown the door eventually.

No.....but I think the reason Kelly survived the OB ousting was b/c Watson really liked working with him. This whole perspective changes now that Watson is out and so is any remnants of the OB offense. Pep will probably handle the bulk of planning, developing the QB’s and will probably handle the in-game play calling with Taylor, Finley, and Mills as the new QB group in Houston. It just seems like Kelly will be the odd man out in-season or by the end of the season.

Good question. But, since the boys on Kirby keep their secrets like the KGB, we will most likely never know how much responsibility Kelly has vs. Pep.

From what I've heard, Pep's schemes are much, much easier to learn (very similar to the way Kubiak ran his offenses).

O'Brien's schemes, on the other hand, were extremely complicated. I'd assume that Kelly runs his from what he learned from O'Brien.

I'd love to see how Kelly and Pep work together, because from the outside looking in, they would seem to be at odds with regards their offensive styles.

Interesting to note that the Texans themselves reported that it was Pep that contacted Davis Mills first, not Kelly.

I believe if the coaches are worth a darn, they don’t need to put him in a game just to find out if they need to draft a QB in 2022.

Main reason is because they’ll be comparing him to QBs that have not played in an NFL game.

The question is whether or not he’s smart enough to process the game in real time to be able to play at a high level.

His measurable won’t change.

They may find out he’s not worth the time by the 2nd preseason game & move on

Well DM15's pro day numbers are better than anything Tom Savage ever did... but yeah. Savage was a 5 star recruit coming out of high school.

But for one reason or another did not play many games. Looked the part when he did play, but not man among boys.

Good prospect. Can he succeed in the NFL?
 
For what it’s worth....if Mills looked good during his Pre Season opportunities and I wanted to see him in a regular season game(s), I would let him start against the following teams on schedule:

JAGS (2x), NYJ, MIA, CAR, and maybe SF.

These teams would also have rookie to questionable QB’s under center as well which should make the competition a little more equal.

Like this idea. If he's to start against the Jags, he'd have to get the majority of focus in training camp.

Certainly a better opportunity to shine than Finley got with the Bengals.

I wonder how much we really know about Kelly? Without the OB yoke we might find a different OC this year. I hope to see the TE’s and a short passing game develop with the running game to help the D With Collins and Cooks getting the occasional deep ball. And I never again want to see three receivers bunched together in the same section of the field. On paper we seem to have some interesting elements on O that can make this happen.

We saw him go 4-8 last year without the OB yoke last year when he had HWSNBN2 to bail him out last year. What do you expect to see this year?

If he has any survivalist skills to speak of......he’s slapping every coach in the office on the back and saying, where in the hail have you guys been my whole life....Wow!!! This playbook is amazing!!!....Finally, I’m around a HC and staff that have a firm direction which is waaaay better than that last loser I worked for....Coach Culley, have I told you lately that you’re just super wonderful?

I am a fan of bringing QBs up slowly. Like what Rodgers, Mahomes, and Herbert did. By no means is it the best for every QB, but I think Tyrod is good to go for this year while Mills learns and studies the games.

I hope Mills career goes the way Herbert's did, minus Tyrod getting his lung punctured again by the Texans medical staff after the 1st game.

So yeah, his biggest issue is experience. Had he stayed in college he'd get that experience & could be a 1st round pick next year.

Or not, remember Hundley, & Taj Boyd & several other QBs they said that about who's draft stock dropped.

But the point remains. He's not going to get that experience. If he's on the field in 2021, that's a huge jump. 1st rounders with that experience don't always successfully make that jump. Mills is at a serious disadvantage
 
My hope for Davis...he’s faulted for his lack of game time and injury history in college. BUT in that limited exposure he’s shown a lot of ability in making all the throws. He’s smart and can read defenses, in fact states thats what he loves to do. He just may be in the perfect environment with DC and Pep. He may surprise and start early. Not full playbook at first but as a game manager, some play action, etc. if he can show this aptitude DC I believe wouldn’t hesitate to play him. In any event his injuries don’t appear to be a problem now. In fact he may play early because Of TT’s history. dont Know much about the Bengal QB but if Davis can show promise and we can trade DW we will be back in black pretty soon.
 
My hope for Davis is that in his first year in the NFL he’s a top 10 quarterback with a high ceiling. My expectations are much lower, however. I expect him to see very limited play and look the part of your typical mid round rookie quarterback. Which will mean the Texans either go back to kicking the quarterback can around for years while riding the quarterback carousel or they reach for a quarterback in the 2022 draft. And in the end Mills will be just another wasted pick.
