OT evaluations

I spent some time last night watching YouTube game tapes and evaluating 4 different OT's. The following are my opinions on these guys. Let me know if you agree or see something different than I do.

Brandon Scherff, how is this guy the #1 ranked OT by CBS? He might make it as a RT with some work, but definitely not as a LT. The CBS ranking makes me wonder if they've even watched his game film. He's got slow feet and reactions, needs to bend his knees more, plays stiff, speed rushers or guys with a good spin more will eat him up. Might be a future pro bowl LG but not an NFL level OT.

Andrus Peat, quick feet and reflexes, good kick step, quick to the 2nd level, good build-long arms, wide stance, athletic, good pass protection but needs to work on his run blocking. He might make it as an NFL LT but he'll need some work which is to be expected coming out of college.

Ereck Flowers, athletic, quick feet and good reflexes, good build-long arms, anchors well, good kick step, gets lost playing in space sometimes. Like Peat I think he might make it as a future NFL LT but he needs some work, again to be expected coming out of college. Looks like a great RT though.

La'el Collins, quick reactions and quick feet, wide stance, anchors well, moves to the 2nd level well, athletic, good kick step, good at pass protection and run blocking. This guy was impressive, moves very well for a big man and should do fine at LT in the NFL. CBS has him ranked 3rd amoungst OT's but he was the best of the guys I evaluated. If he fell to #16 I wouldn't hesitate to take him. He could anchor the RT spot until he needs to move to LT in a few years.

La'el Collins is the one I'm keeping an eye on. Prior to the Senior Bowl, the knock on Collins was that he didn't have the athleticism and change of direction to play LT. He'd have to slide over to RT or inside. Since Mobile, and as tape is studied, there seems to be a change of opinion. He really made an impression at the Senior Bowl practices and he may move up the charts as a result. If he has a good combine, I'm afraid he won't be available at 16.
(edit) I think the early grade on him was based on 2013 tape. I think he may have kicked his game up a notch his senior year.

1000% agree. Way to stiff to play LT.

Needs a lot of work. Way to inconsistent.

Really good pass pro but would like to see more aggression in the run game. More of a finesse blocker right now.

Thats exactly what I have been saying. Glad to see people around here finally coming around to Collins. He would be great value at 16.

Don't sleep on Clemmons because he had a so so senior bowl. He is right up there with these guys. He is the best at getting to the second level. He just needs more experience. He will be good.

pretty much agree. I have Scherff as an OG and very solid in a straight ahead blocking O not a zone blocking. Reminds me a bit of Winston. Peat is sliding but I think that is wrong. He'll likely need some time but should be solid just not sure when.

Flowers I want no part of him and he needs to go to a team that can wait for him a couple years.

Collins... now you are talking! Could be a 12 year starter. I don't want OT #16 but if selected, I'd applaud Collins.

I just can't get over how CBS has Scherff ranked as the #1 OT. He's stiff as a board and slow. Watching tape on this guy and then looking at the CBS ranking really makes me question their whole ranking system. I know there are differences between evaluators but Scherff as the #1 OT and Hundley listed as the #41 overall prospect makes me heavily question their evaluations and rankings. I wonder if they watch tape on players or just regurgitate crap they read somewhere else.

Peat is far from a finished product, but he is the best pass blocking OL in this class. Due to that ability he will likely be the first OL taken. He has everything you want. He just needs to get stronger and get a little bit better in the run game.

Scherff is an OG to me. He could maybe play some RT, but I think he'd be better off inside. He has good feet when moving forward and back, but is stiff and slow when moving laterally. You'd like to have him in a spot where there was a guy on either side of him to limit the amount of space he has to cover. Putting him on the edge is a risk. That said, he is a very talented OL. He's just limited.

I didn't like Collins that much last year but he really grew on me. He's more pro ready than Peat but I think he's also closer to his ceiling. He adds the dimension of being able to play on both sides which is something none of these other guys can do. That's valuable. I think he will be a better RT than LT, but he would be more than serviceable if we needed to move him over after a few years.

Flowers is very raw. He's more athlete than football player right now. He has obvious skills that project well to the LT position but he needs a lot of coaching. This isn't the kind of player you'd like to have starting right away. In fact, I'd bet he goes to a team that's already set at OT, sits there for a couple years, and then takes over when the team lets one of the starters walk.

I'm wondering why there is such a large discrepancy in opinions on Cedric O.

He is considered an instant starter by some like NFL. Network and 12th on the OT list by CBS. Let me know if you get a chance to evaluate him.

I know this wasn't directed at me. But while extremely talented Cedrick O doesn't appear to love football. He's got great feet but isn't as powerful as he should be. The reason for the discrepancies is A. He's coming off of an ACL. 2. Some NFL evaluators look at his talent and think they can get the most out of this unmolded ball of clay talent. Others think he's a slacker who will just be a serviceable type OT that can get by on his god given ability.

Either way Cedrick O is not the type of guy coming off of injury that teams will spend a high pick on. Obviously you've watched quite a bit of Cedrick O, what are your thoughts on him?

Cedric Ogbuehi-OT, great size-long arms-big hands, quick feet and reflexes, good at switching blocks when defense runs a stunt, decent knee bend but it could be better when anchoring. He needs to get stronger, needs to anchor better on a bull rush, can get driven back dangerously close to the QB on a bull rush, gets lost in space when getting to the 2nd level looking confused on who to block and misses everyone, inconsistent. He's a good pass blocker but not great, needs to get stronger. He really needs to work on his run blocking and seems content to make contact but doesn't drive his man off the LOS. Needs to play meaner. He looked like a 2nd round pick.

This evaluation is obviously pre-ACL injury.

I just crunch the numbers with him. I really haven't watched him so I'm not in the position to form my own opinion.

But I thank you for returning your opinion which does explain a lot. Glass empty/full evaluations telling more about the evaluators than the players.

...That said, here's our latest Mock Draft, taking into account Combine results and further evaluation of team needs. .....

16. Texans: Brandon Scherff, OT/OG, Iowa
Right tackle Derek Newton is a free agent, and with the Texans already in the NFL's top five in offensive spending, it's unlikely they'd pay him as well as the market will. Scherff is NFL-ready and can provide instant starter potential at right tackle (or at left guard to replace Ben Jones).

We're in the top 5 in offensive spending? Wow... wouldn't have guessed from our offensive production.

Ahem....Andre Johnson's cap number.....hence the current predicament.

Arian's is pretty high too. Knowing NE and their offense, he's probably on the chopping block next year.
