Things to watch:
O-Line - How will they do with 3 backups again?
D - Clowney sighting?
Return game - Will see Wendall Williams speed?
Running back rotation - Is Blue gone?
Os - Accuracy?

Great game day thread brother. Good information concerning the game.
Looking forward to seeing a great game tonight. Go Texans!

I'm watching the O-line. How well will they protect Brock? Will a pieced together O-line open up running lanes?
Osweiler's accuracy and decision making.
Will he go deep at least once?
Will we see him get better reads on the defense pre-snap?
How long will the first team play?

Texans vs. Saints: Five players to watch
  • Greg Mancz, center With Nick Martin sidelined because of a high ankle sprain that will probably cause him to miss the regular-season opener against Chicago at least, Mancz starts for the second consecutive game. Martin missed the opener because of a back injury. This is Mancz’s second season with the Texans. He appeared in three games last year. At 6-4, 310, he’s got the kind of size coaches like. He’s shown consistent improvement since the offseason program began. He’s smart, physical and can make the calls. He’s under a lot of pressure to produce in Martin’s place.
  • Josh Lenz, wide receiver He had a solid week or practice and caught the ball well against the Texans’ defense and the Saints. He’s 6-0, 200 and has good speed. He’s quick off the line and has some moves to get open. He gets in and out of his breaks quick. He had three catches for a team-high 52 yards in the victory over San Francisco, including a long gain of 22 yards. He’d like to make the roster and not return to the practice squad, but wide receiver is going to be a difficult cut. The quarterbacks like him because he’s almost always in the correct spot.
  • Kurtis Drummond, safety He was impressive enough last season to make the practice squad before being moved to the active roster in October and playing mostly special teams. He saw game action in the last two games. At 6-1, 200, he’s got good enough size. He’s a hard hitter. He must be careful not to miss tackles and make sure he’s got the defense down. Drummond moves well. He and another former undrafted free agent, Corey Moore, have been making plays at safety during the offseason program and training camp. Like Moore, Drummond is trying to earn a backup job.
  • D.J. Reader, nose tackle The rookie fifth-round pick has begun to figure out the defense and what’s required of him up front. He’s watching and learning from Vince Wilfork, who’s been like a player/coach. At 6-3, 335, Reader has ideal size for a nose tackle. He’s got to hold his ground when the ball is snapped and tie up two blockers if possible so the linebackers can make the tackle. He’s strong and thorough and wants to learn, which the coaches like. He’s getting valuable playing time in preseason and hopes to back up Wilfork when the final roster is established.
  • Jonathan Grimes, running back There’s so much competition at his position with the additions of veteran Lamar Miller and rookie Tyler Ervin – not to mention last year’s seventh-round pick Kenny Hilliard – that Grimes has almost gone unnoticed. The coaches love him. He contributes as a runner, receiver and special teams player. Last season, he averaged 5 yards a carry. He knows the system well and can’t wait to show what he can do to try to earn a spot on the team again. The coaches like Grimes because he knows what he’s doing, where he’s supposed to be and is accountable for mistakes.

QB Brock Osweiler's progression among five things to watch in Texans vs. Saints

Sarah Barshop/ESPN

HOUSTON -- In the Houston Texans' preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, head coach Bill O'Brien ran a simplified offense and quarterback Brock Osweiler never really got going in his quarter of work.

Osweiler and the offense hope to get off to a faster start Saturday when they play the New Orleans Saints at NRG Stadium.

Here are five things to watch.

Osweiler's performance: Just as in the preseason opener, all eyes will be on Osweiler. He played in just three series against the 49ers and will likely get more playing time against New Orleans. On Sunday, Osweiler completed 4 of 7 passes for 27 yards. He said Thursday he did not know how many reps he would get against the Saints, but he expected to play longer this time around. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was targeted just once and had no catches against the 49ers, so look for Osweiler to go to him more frequently Saturday.

Jadeveon Clowney's return: Clowney returned to practice Tuesday after missing a week with a sore left knee. He was practicing ahead of schedule early in the week, participating in team drills rather just the individual drills that O'Brien expected. By Thursday's joint practice with the Saints, the former No. 1 pick looked like himself, making plays all over the place. Clowney has a history of injuries in his short NFL career, so the Texans are being understandably cautious with him, but the linebacker is looking forward to playing against the Saints.

Return game: Running back Tyler Ervin and receiver Wendall Williams each fumbled on punt returns against the 49ers, and receiver Will Fuller took a hard hit when he admitted he should have signaled for a fair catch. The rookies have all looked good on returns in practice, so pay attention to what they do in Saturday's game, as that was something O'Brien emphasized this week.

Kicking competition still underway: KickersKa'imi Fairbairn and Nick Novak did not get many chances in the first preseason game. Fairbairn made the only field goal he attempted and added an extra point. Novak made both of his extra-point tries as well. Earlier in training camp, O'Brien said the kicking battle was "very close."

Keep an eye on the offensive line: The Texans' offensive line is not operating at 100 percent, missing starting tackles Derek Newton(hamstring) and Duane Brown (quadriceps) and rookie center Nick Martin (ankle). With the starters out, additional reps have gone to other players on the line, including tackles Chris Clarkand Kendall Lamm and centers Greg Manczand Tony Bergstrom. "Eventually we want to have all five that are going to start working together," O'Brien said. "But we don't have that right now, so these guys need to keep taking advantage of their opportunities." The offensive line gave up three sacks against the 49ers, so pay attention to how the unit fares without starters again Saturday.

Did Sarah get 4 of her 5 things to watch from my post? :kitten: I posted an 1h 5 min before her. Maybe we're just on the same wave length.

I hate night games, well really I just hate the waiting.
Lol. You 2 might be soul mates. ;)
As far as waiting, we still have just under 6 hours until game time. I'm with ya. I hate the waiting on night games. I so much prefer the noon or 3:00 games to the late games.

Fuller.

Although I believe the are keeping him in Area 51 until Sept 11.

There's nothing real interesting at Area 51 since I left. And even then, the aliens were pretty stupid. I mean seriously, you fly all the way across the galaxy only to crash in Arizona? When we dissected them, they had Jack In The Box tacos in them, so we just figured it was food poisoning that killed them, and not us shooting them.

Hey, Jack in the Box taco's are good!!!

Hello All!!!! I am new to Houston, having just moved from New Jersey last month. My husband and I were lucky enough to get tickets for tonight's game, and we were hoping some of you could recommend a few things we could do before the game starts. We are on a tight budget (having just moved here), so not much money for food or drinks. I am just wondering if there are any "Must See" or "Must Do" things we should look out for. Thanks for any suggestions!!

Go early and stop by northwest corner of blue lot and visit Blue Crew for tailgaiting...

And welcome to Houston and TTMB

Looking closely at OS and Clowney.

There had better be noticeable progression in Brocks game and I want to see if Clowney will play without getting hurt. He was having a great pre-season before he sat out. If healthy he will make a huge difference in out defense.

Thanks! We will definitely check that out! :) I am excited to go to my first real, Pro football game! And, pardon my ignorance, but what is TTMB? :) If this is your tailgating crew, Thanx for the invite! :)

TTMB = Texanstalk Message Board.

Hope you enjoy the game!!

As for me I'll be at Sunday lunch for nearly all the game..... Stupid time difference......

I'll read this thread when I'm done so thanks in advance to all those who post helpful insights into what happens on the field.

Not my tailgating crew, but they are very friendly people and love visitors! Lots of food and drink and they will make you feel welcome. Also the Texans fans band stops by there every time before the game to have a good cheer

You need to go to Pappa's on S.Main and fill up on barbeque & beer. That way you won't be tempted to buy the NFL-priced food at the game

If the sight of barbeque doesn't excite you, you may have moved to the wrong state
:D
I will say that the tailgating folks will most likely have some good food too.

About to smoke that Texans Grill up. Slap some baby back ribs and sausages on that bad boy. Sides will be some stewed okra with sausages and chicken thighs, BBQ baked beans and potato salad.

Awww yeah it's about to go down.

Let's go Texans.

Welcome to Houston and to MB! What area of city did you move to? There are many places to go in Htown and the surrounding areas. If you want, post in non sports forum and you will get many suggestions.

Too far from the stadium. That's why I said go to the one on S. Main. It's spittin' distance from Reliant. They need to go to the Brisket House when they have time to savor the meal not when they're trying to get to a ball game.

Depends on what part of town they are coming from..... It's on the way coming from the northwest or west side.

Good thought.
I'd be coming from League City so it's out of the way if I'm going to a game.
Glad you posted that though. Haven't been there in ages.
Damn....too late to make a run and get back to the house by game time.

Rudy's is close to you

From what I've been hearing Spencer Tillman is going to completely shake things up this week. Unveiling a whole new approach.

Naahhh....just kidding he'll be the same soulkilling smug doofus forever.

I'm with you guys on the waiting. I even hate having to wait for a 3 o'clock games.

I am interested in seeing what Brock can do, and I'm looking to see more of Miller. I really think that this dude is going to be legit, and is going to be a cornerstone for years to come on this offense.

As far as Clowney, I really think He will do good Sitting on the bench. I hear that he is really helping out the Waterboy, and helping the kid improve his game

I mute the preseason games when they have the local channel 13 dumbos doing it. I just can't handle them.

That's the equivalent of a pony ride before the Kentucky Derby. There's plenty of good/better food at NRG than Papas. Plus the whole game day experience . To each his own.

As much food, BBQ especially in the parking lot I see no reason to go looking for a restaurant on the way to the game.
If you're invited to someone's tailgate party, that's great. But they just got here from Joisey and don't really know anyone; hence the original "where to go/what to do" question.
