**Official GameDay Thread** Pre-Season Home Opener New Orleans Saints @ Houston Texans

Fairbairn - Quad injury
Novak - Concussion

I don't like the way this competition is headed (pun not intended)

Wondering how bad Fairbairn's quad injury is since he didn't get to kick at all in this last game. If it's bad enough the Texans may try to put him on IR and stash him away until next year, or they could just cut him. Either way it looks like they're going with Novak again for the season.

This decision isn't going to just come down to game performance. Lots of factors involved.

Regarding Ervin, he is a prospect that comes with some fairly high regard.

I'd be surprised if they cut him and made him available to be picked up by other teams. It's not really about where he is now as a rookie, it's about what they think his ceiling is. And if he's been good in practice, taking care of his business, not being a good off, I can't see them parting ways this early because if they cut him I could see him being picked up pretty fast. I'd be surprised if 1) he was cut and ) made it to and lasted on the PS all season.

Regarding Hilliard, he did take a step back from last game, but......so did everyone else. The entire running game was bad. Oline issues probably had something to do with that.

I think Ervin is going to be our redshirt guy this year. He's going to "tweak" something and head to IR for the year.

Nice to see Reader and Covington rebound this week. Reader splitting double teams was impressive

Our oline is still a hot mess. Unfortunately, a starter caught my eye as having the worst game of the bunch. Su'a Filo, with Aboushi and Bergstrom right behind him

Cushing makes our defense click. I can't help but wonder what's going to happen with him after the season. I want to keep him, but for how much? McKinney is our biggest liability in coverage. He's a thumper, but his coverage looks like a sloth covering a cheetah

In the end, we still need help at dline and oline. I'd assume we're heavily scouting in those areas this preseason

Drive over to Killens BBQ... get there early, prepare to wait in line.
Been there. They do brisket right too.
First time I went there was on a Saturday morning; the line was down the block.
They brung out free beer for those waiting in line. That's how long the wait was.
Food was good but not wait in line over and hour good.

RB is a tough one for sure. Unlike others, I think they will either find a way to stash Ervin on IR with a hangnail, or he will be the 4th RB and they will keep working with him. Dude has excellent potential as a COB/3rd down back and returner but right now, he is a little lost. That can be fixed, and my guess is they still like his potential.

I think they keep 4. If Ervin is #4, who are the others? Miller is obvious, and the other two are dicey. I thought Hillard would be odd man out, but I think he has improved pretty dramatically.

That means two spots for Blue, Hunt, Hillard, and Grimes. I could make a case for any combination of two.

I'll go with Hunt for one spot for return duties and 3rd down/COB guy while they continue to work with Ervin. And the other? Whew. I'm going to say Grimes because of his versatility and his ST play. But I could easily see Hillard there too. I think Blue is the odd man out. He's been hurt, and I think Hillard has passed him.

I'm not much for waiting either but this one is worth the wait. Usually free beer on the weekends while you wait. 1st timers, I suggest the 6 meat plate.

Thanks for the tip, if I go by and there is not a line I'll definitely give it a shot. I don't drink much so free beer is lost on me, now if they came out with some free breakfast tacos or something I might take a chance.

I'm fully expecting this. He needs more development before he can catch up with Akeem Hunt, who is killing it this preseason.

I'm with you; loathe waiting in line and will not arrive early to eat. I'm hungry then, not 2 hrs down the road - when I'll be starving. Rudy's may not be winning awards or raved about online- but their bbq ain't bad either.

Aaaannnd to keep this post relevant to the thread - I've taken to not taking pre-season games as serious. The newness of the Texans has worn off and I look at pre-season games more now as live fire drills. The more "trigger time" these guys get the better, regardless of winning or losing the game.
Yes. Watching new guys and hoping some barely heard of low draft or UDFA thrives. The win or loss is negligible compared to how players perform. We expect a Fuller to make it yet a Wendell Williams or Chad Slade will have me :dancer:

You gotta have the Williams and Slades perform to complete the team. Without guys like that stepping up, most teams will go nowhere.

I think where you really need those back of the roster guys to perform is more on OL and defensive front 7. Those guys rotate a lot, need not to drop off significantly and frequently do even early on. 5th/6th WRs quite often never see the field on an offensive play.

Some of these were funny!

Houston Texans Preseason Week 2 Yearbook Awards
August 22, 2016 11:15 AM By Seth Payne

Best Rick Grimes: given to the player who performs well despite being draped in zombies
  • Jadeveon Clowney had himself a night, and he did it despite various offensive linemen trying to drag after him like he was a ski boat. He also did an admirable job fighting through double teams, and unselfishly soaking up blocks when he was the penetrator on stunts. This freed Christian Covington up for a hurry at least once.
  • I know people want him to develop more of a repertoire of moves, but he’s such a unique athlete that I’m not worried about it. Here’s what he does right now.
    • Bull rush
    • Speed rush
    • Speed rush converted to bull rush
    • As long as he’s healthy, that’s enough for offensive linemen to poop their pants. You get dumped on your ass like New Orleans tackle Zach Strief did, it’s in your head the rest of the game. That poor guy’s parents were watching that play.

Best Zika Virus:
given to the guy who did some damage, but I’ve only recently learned of his existence.
  • Brendan Scarlett. He was signed last week. I think. Hustled down the line to make a tackle for no gain in the second quarter, then showed up a few more times. I hope he’s good enough to stick around, ‘cause that’s a great last name for puns.

Best Al Roker:
given to the guy who is not as fat as I thought he’d be

  • DJ Reader. Moves down the line on zone running plays better than I thought he would. Especially important in the NFL, where umpires try to take away defensive lineman’s last defense by calling us for holding.
  • Had a stuff in the 2nd quarter where he split a double team perfectly and stuffed the running back for no gain.
  • The entire defensive line did a better job of holding their ground on double teams.

Best Sith:
Given to the pass rusher who makes somebody look like a hologram.
  • Whitney Mercilus. Mercilus was robbed of a strip sack in the first quarter, but his rush was a work of art. Sure, it was versus Coby Fleener, but he “ran the hoop” so fluidly that Fleener couldn’t even slow him down. He made Fleener look like a mirage who disappeared into the ether.

Best Bull Rider:
given to the guy who isn’t all that big, but is tough as nails.

  • Kevin Johnson. Johnson shows tremendous play recognition on throws to the flats, and snuffs them out before they can develop by arriving on time and with form tackles.

Best Barry White:
given to the guy who’s a little hefty but still silky smooth
  • Christian Covington. We’ve always looked at Covington as a guy who would make the team based on his ability to rush the passer, but he has been noticeably stout versus the run in these two first pre-season games. He’s got a real shot at winning the starting spot at right defensive end.

Best General Contractor:
given to the guy who doesn’t possess great skill, but coordinates the people who do.

  • Brock Osweiler. Not incredibly skilled, but good at getting all the sub-contractors coordinated. Will Fuller was like the guy you bring in from Portugal to do intricate marble work. It was a good hire by Brock.
  • Showed very good pocket presence last night. Wasn’t hurried, Wasn’t holding onto the ball too long. Had a good sense for when to dump it off.
  • Good to see him connect on some of the underneath crossing routes. That’s a hallmark of what they do in New England, and it’s worked out pretty well for them.

I agree, especially with how the Texans OL situation seems to be shaking out.
