**Official Game-Day Thread** The Boot...Texans @ Cowboys!!

I kinda tuned out after the first quarter, but that certainly got my blood moving. Ending preseason with a pick 6, against the Cowboys no less, is a pretty good high for us and low for them to take into game 1.

Who's gonna get the axe to keep him, though?

He would be one of the 6 CB's I would keep.

JoJO/KJ/KJo/Bouye/James/Nelson.

4 Safeties

Hal/Demps/Pleasant/Dillon

KJ could play safety in a pinch. You just dont let a guy like Nelson walk. The Bears who are CB poor would claim Nelson in a heartbeat.

These Texicans may be even better than we thought. For the first time ever, we have reserves who can play football. A necessary characteristic and one that every team who has won a SB has had. We will have a backup QB who can play, one or the other. Tonight Weeden looked like squat but Savage was ok. When Savage is struggling, Weeden comes through. My prediction was 10 or 11 wins but we may do better than that.

Interesting fact: That would make 3 of our CBs who were drafted in the 1st round, and the other 3 were undrafted free agents.

4 sho.

Another big thing, I think, is that we have coaches who know what to do with said players.

Watched a bit of the game while working this afternoon.

Couple of impressions from me:

Hunt has explosion and power to go with his speed. Makes runs Blue and Hilliard can't, and I don't think I'd say that the other way around.

Heath is worth keeping around, hopefully he clears waivers into the PS. Really active for a DL and has a good awareness of where the ball is and good pursuit.

I'm pretty sure he's gotten offers already - the 49'ers did an interview this offseason I think. Not that I want to see Romeo leave any time soon, but we really need to find a way to lock Vrabel up within the organization.

^^^^THIS^^^^

Vrabel will be a hot commodity next off season, most likely, as a Def. Coordinator and looks like a good future Head Coach candidate. Definitely need to lock him up for the long haul.

Vrabel declined the DC position, and a pay raise, at SF this offseason. There has to be a wink wink nudge nudge agreement here for him.

I think I'm on the wrong board. I'm a Texan.
Natives of Texas used to be Mexicans. After the territory won its independence they called themselves Texicans or Texians. This wasn't shortened to Texans until some time later. I like old-fashioned stuff and besides, using the same word every time gets boring.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but since the end of last season I've revisited my "hatred" for the Dallas Cowboys, and wondered why the hell do I hang on to it?

I couldn't come up with a valid answer.

In fact, one could argue that anyone in the great state of Texas should root for both teams when they are not playing one another, because one is in the NFC and the other the AFC. Therefore, most of the time, there is not a conflict of interest.

Now, it's true that there is a difference in mentality between the two cities (if you allow it). It is also true that Dallas has a crap ass owner, but equally true that we had our own shitheel in Bud Adams (who was pretty entertaining until he decided to pull stakes).

In all fairness - if there is such a thing as "fair" - I believe there is quite a bit of jealousy from Houstonians leveled at Dallas. Dallas has Superb Owl championships, while we have zero. We probably could have kicked their asses in 1960 - 1962, had there been a Superb Owl, but that's a candyland fantasy.

In sum, I hate the star in their helmets; I wouldn't want to live in Dallas; their owner is a jackwagon, and their cheerleaders, as a group, have always been better than ours, but hell, this is Texas, and we're the best motherfucking state in the union; we have the best college recruits, and since all of these players are guns for hire anyway, I'm wondering what's the big deal.

It may take me a few years to actually wrap my head around rooting for Dallas, and I'll never own a cap with a star on it, but I'm not letting the anger flow through me, young Skywalker.

Hail Texas!
I started my hate for Dallas at an early age. All the talk of them being "America's Team," made me for sure know they would not be my team. Outside of that I really have no reason not to like the Cowboys.

As it stands today I just can not wrap my mind around supporting the Cowboys. I would however like them to be relevant record wise more often. It just feels like a team with thier tradition of winning should not be so predestrian more seasons than not. Overall the 2000's have not been kind to the Cowboys or Cowboys fans.

I myself would relish seeing an undefeated Cowboys go to the Super Bowl only to have thier butts handed to them. I would love that!!! Especially if it was our Texans kicking their tails!!!

In the end it just seems that no matter my dislike for the Cowboys it seems they should be good enough to make the playoffs and lose thier butts once in them!!

24 Observations from Texans at Cowboys
http://www.houstontexans.com/news/a...-Cowboys/412271c2-325d-4a2b-aec6-366dd6cf8178

1. Twenty-seven Texans suited up but never left the bench, including
Derek Newton, who should be back at practice this upcoming week, in preparation for the Chicago Bears. That’s a GREAT thing.

2. After the game, I asked running back Kenny Hilliard when was the last time he had 20 carries in a game, much less 29. He got the answer right when he said back in high school. The most times he carried it in a game at LSU was in his freshman season at Arkansas - 19 times. He hammered it 29 times on Thursday night. He made some runs he wouldn’t have made back in 2015. He’s seeing the holes quicker. His feet are quicker. He put on some really good tape against the Cowboys. He said and this is so true - he got stronger as the game wore on.

3. As an aside, he knew the exact game and year when he had 19 carries against Arkansas. That’s impressive recall.

4. The running back cuts are going to be ultra-difficult, made even tougher by the performance of Akeem Hunt this preseason. The second-year man out of Purdue scored two touchdowns, including a run on 4th and goal from the three. That was a man’s run. Cowboys defensive tackle Lawrence Okoye made contact with Hunt at the two-yard line. Quick note, Okoye is 300 pounds. Hunt kept his legs churning and carried the big Cowboys defensive lineman into the end zone.

5. I nearly jumped out of the booth when Keith Mumphery got deep on the Cowboys secondary for his long touchdown. He may not get many opportunities to do that in 2016, but he capitalized on the one chance he had against the Cowboys. I know that he wanted to make a big play in this one and he finally got his chance. If you can see the picture of him scoring, though, it’s priceless. Think Usain Bolt picture at the Olympics.

22. Duane Brown’s return, whenever that happens, will be a significant boost for this offensive line, but getting Derek Newton back this week will be a definite shot in the arm for that unit. I will say though that Kendall Lamm did some really solid work at right tackle in his stead. Had Nick Martin not gotten injured, Brown’s injury would’ve been the only one that set this team back and, hopefully, only for a few games. All in all, though, considering what some teams experienced in the preseason, the injury situation isn’t all that bad.

23. Oh yeah, number 99 comes back next week too. #Pumped.

I feel like I was watching a different game than a lot of you.
While I agree that Hunt had an excellent game, I don't agree with a lot of you that Hilliard played bad.

Other than the fumble, I thought he ran really well. His quickness has improved, he is really good in traffic, able to get through some pretty tight holes and he seemed to always fall forward for an extra yard.
I think he brings a skill set that's different than Hunt or Irvin.
I also think Hunt and Irvin are very similar, so I only see one of those two making the squad, and Irvin might have the edge due to return ability.

IMO, Blue and Grimes are the odd men out with Miller, Irvin and either Hilliard or Hunt making the three we keep.
Unless the find a way to keep Irvin as a return specialist, and Hunt as RB2 or RB3.

Complicating the scenario is the similarity between Miller, Hunt and Irvin. I just think those guys are similar enough that a back like Hilliard would have a role.

They have a lot talent at the position. I expect that Rick is on the phone trying to get a late round pick for one of them, or trade one of them for depth at a different position.

ok, hipster, what reserves did you see? (i'm not being rude, i want a clear answer.) i saw nothing on the O-line.. D-line reserves were cartoons. how much depth did we really have ?
