NFL Random Thought of the Day

The Browns are loaded with QBs. But Pickens has suffered a setback with his hamstring injury. Shedeur Sanders is dealing with a sore arm, so Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel are currently the only two full-strength participants in Cleveland’s quarterback competition.

Jordon Hudson didn’t appreciate Mary Kay Cabot’s joke about Bill Belichick
By Mike Florio

Published August 3, 2025 09:56 AM

Nearly three months after Jordon Hudson took the football world by storm, by reportedly storming out of a CBS interview — and by directing North Carolina coach Bill Belichick to not respond to the simple question of how they met — Hudson had largely faded into the background of Belichick’s looming debut as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

She’s now interjecting herself into the conversation again, by responding to the joke made on Friday night by Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

After explaining how Belichick would yell at Cabot during her early years on the Browns beat, Cabot said this: “Now I totally understand why Bill gave me such a hard time,” Cabot said. “I was 28 at the time and he just couldn’t relate to a woman that old.”

Was it objectively funny? Of course it was.

In the cesspool formerly known as Twitter, however, plenty of humorless still reside. One of them responded to our tweet of

Cabot’s joke with this: “Not much of a ‘laugh.’ No wonder so many have contempt for the media, especially those who want to be the story rather than roprt [sic] on the story.”

That’s when it got interesting. Hudson saw our tweet. She saw the response. And she reposted the response.

Hey, she can do whatever she wants. But there’s a real risk of coming off as woefully thin skinned when whining about a joke that goes with the low-hanging-fruit territory of a 49-year age difference.

It all goes back to one of the common themes of fame. People who crave attention think they can have it on their own terms.

That’s not how it works.

With the exposure comes scrutiny. And life becomes a lot easier when you learn how to ignore the criticism.

Personally, I don't think they'll trade him. I think they will most likely agree to a contract shortly before the season starts.

But if they DID want to trade him, this really isn't the best time for that in terms of getting teams bidding against each other. Most teams are squared away with their rosters, signed their FA's, and might not be able to handle the cap implications of a trade for Mikah... All that said, I'm sure they'd still find an acceptable deal. I imagine it would take at least 2 firsts, or a player and a first...
Jerry Jones thinks he is always right. He will either extend Parsons close to what Jones thought Parsons agreed to at their dinner OR he will accept a good trade offer that he will use vs other players in future negotiations. NFC teams out in any trade scenario I see. One article I read put forth Chargers sending Tuli Tuipulotu plus picks but I don't see LA doing that trade. If a trade is done, I think Houston could get Parsons if Nick/Demeco want him. Texans have same pluses that LA but I don't know of any on LA roster that has relationship with Parsons as does Stroud.

Agent Mulugheta should love to have Parsons, Stingley and Stroud on a SB contender.

At this point, if Jerry signs Parsons, I predict it will be to whatever Mulugheta wants. That's what typically happens to Jerry when he waits too long to sign a player he wants to keep. Dak took Jerry to the cleaners twice, as did CD and Zach Martin.

And I have no idea what Jerry thinks he agreed to with Parsons back in March, but refusing to talk to a player's agent and wanting to circumvent a players legal or otherwise representation is unethical and dirty. The only reason for doing that is to take advantage of a player's inexperience in contract negotiations.

I agree and Jones has history of 'negotiating' with player sans agent, I understand. If I were Parsons, I would not want to play for him and team probably will squander season.. again. No way I could be a Dallas fan.

I lived in Dallas for over a decade after college, and have a lot of friends there. Many of them are to the point of being beyond frustrated, some are questioning their Cowboys fandom... Bottom line, nothing is going to change as long as Jerry is alive, and even then, I'm not sure there's any indication that Stephen is any better. Anything he knows he learned from his dad...

Cash is king and it will make all this fluff go away. But if I was Jerruh, I would sell to the highest bidder and stockpile picks to build on. The Cowpukes are a below average team anyway with or without Parsons.
Jerry is in his 80's and he realizes he's running out of time. While we all can question his strategy and tactics when it comes to running the Cowboys, he thinks he knows what he's doing. He is not going to change his approach, and that means he's not trading anyone for future picks. He wants to win now, and he thinks he knows how to do it.

Prescott has got to be an NFL quarterback the entire season to give them a chance at the super bowl and even then I doubt it this year. I hope Parsons forces his way out even if it's to team other than the Texans

Browns add QB Tyler Huntley
Published August 4, 2025 08:03 PM

When you have two quarterbacks, you have none. When you have five quarterbacks, you’re the Browns.

When you have six quarterbacks, you’re f—ked.

Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the Browns have added Pro Bowl (seriously) quarterback Tyler Huntley.

The reason is far less dysfunctional than the Browns have been. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel have hamstring injuries.

Sheduer Sanders has a sore shoulder. They need healthy bodies to get through practice. Enter Huntley.

Huntley spent four seasons with the Browns, from 2020 through 2023. He spent the 2024 offseason with the Browns. He was released in late August, and he returned to Baltimore’s practice squad.

The Dolphins signed him to the active roster after Tua Tagovailoa suffered his latest concussion. Huntley started five games in 2024.
Huntley is much more than a camp arm. He has 25 regular-season appearances, and 14 regular-season starts. It’s somewhat surprising he was available. It’s not surprising that the Browns have pounced on yet another quarterback.

So, yes, Cleveland now has a six-pack of quarterbacks. And their fans may need a Manhattan.

At this point, if Jerry signs Parsons, I predict it will be to whatever Mulugheta wants. That's what typically happens to Jerry when he waits too long to sign a player he wants to keep. Dak took Jerry to the cleaners twice, as did CD and Zach Martin.

Agreed about Jerrah having to overpay.

But Jerrah doesn't have to talk to anybody he doesn't want to talk too.

Even with Parsons the Cowboys will never win anything with Jerrah as owner or Dak as the QB. Jerrah might as well trade Parsons and save the money.

Yes, but that would be rational thinking and I'm not sure Jerry will do that. I think he's more interested in the attention and being the godfather. Kiss his ring and he will grant you favor.

NFL bans use of smelling salts.

"In 2024, the FDA issued a warning to companies that produce commercially available ammonia inhalants (AIs), as well as to consumers about the purchase and use of AIs, regarding the lack of evidence supporting the safety or efficacy of AIs marketed for improving mental alertness or boosting energy," the memo stated. "The FDA noted potential negative effects from AI use. AIs also have the potential to mask certain neurologic signs and symptoms, including some potential signs of concussion. As a result, the NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee recommended prohibiting the use of AIs for any purpose during play in the NFL."

Mask signs of concussions? Ya think?

When we in the FDA were evaluating the use of ammonium salt inhalants in sports back in the early 2000s, one of the factors of concern to us is not even usually written about in most articles.............The ammonia fumes from smelling salts are irritants and can cause the patient to instinctively react by jerking their head or neck away sometimes violently (something that anyone present with its use would have probably observed). This involuntary movement can undoubtedly potentially exacerbate existing head or neck injuries.

I thought I had posted a photo of Allen sitting on the NRG turf, with spent smelling salt cartridges around him. Couldn't find it but did find the trainer handing Allen one. I don't know how the Bills got away with that blatant violation of the concussion protocol.

Speaking of the Bills, I watched the first episode of this season's Hard Knocks last night. Ice cream sundaes, scooters, and reading the Bible in the dorm room. I thought I was watching an episode of Leave it to Beaver with no Eddie Haskell. Not getting buffaloed by this. I've seen the Bills ugly side.

Stafford receiving steroid shots for back pain.

  • QB Matthew Stafford is dealing with an aggravated disc, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday. Stafford has been receiving epidurals to aid in dealing with the injury. The club has called Stafford week to week while being cautious with the starting QB, but the team has plans for him to be ready Week 1, Rapoport added.

I know a couple of DEs that also have plans for Stafford on Week 1.

From my Sunday post:

Mathew Stafford is not participating in TC due to unspecified back tightness. He has seen a back specialist, but no reports of the results. There is a vague "week-to-week" status, with the HC saying Stafford will be available week 1. "Week-to-week" is a very concerning prognosticator for a back problem.

It is being reported that Stafford suffered multiple vertebral fractures in 2019 leading him to miss 8 games. But as I researched this injury, it was 3 nondisplaced fractures of the thoracic transverse processes.........not of the main vertebra bodies. These are very painful due to severe local muscle spams (as with Tony Romo). Once healed, long-term prognosis is excellent.

In Dec 2022, over his last two starts spanning 14 days, Stafford suffered two concussions and a spinal cord contusion that caused numbness in his legs, something that could have led to a cervical neck fusion or even retirement..............he missed 6 games and took neither route.

With lumbar discs, non surgical treatment typically takes 6-12 weeks to be able to return to play (if failed after this time, surgery is typically required). A QB actually has more risk for reinjury than for example linemen because of the sudden torques involved when they are hit and/or tackled.,

Return for week 1 is quite an optimistic goal and when Stafford is able to return (80% will), his back problem is unlikely to be entirely in the rear view mirror.

BTW, epidural steroids don't heal bulging discs, they help control the pain. They usually take 3-7 days to work.

A way of the NFL controlling media messages...............there's nothing good in it for fans.

As opposed to the 3 musketeers signature, it's "All for one..........all for one."

The ESPN-NFL deal raises plenty of questions
I'm going to give a personal example of how an NFL fan may react to this agreement in the future. I have paid for ESPN+ the past 4 years just that I could watch live and recorded Ivy League softball in the spring. Now, my Ivy League softball interest has waned. I am also an NFL fan. I purchase a package that allows me to watch RedZone, as well as the NFL Network. If ESPN bundles the their newly acquired NFL properties with their existing sports packages, am I more likely to stay with ESPN? Yes, I'm more likely to do that. If the NFL moves their Sunday Ticket to ESPN, would I be more interested than with a dish network, or an internet app? Probably. Especially if it's bundled with additional Disney associated channels.

For me, as a NFL fan and general sports geek, this seems like it will allow me to consolidate the programming I want to see. I'm sure there will still be the outliers like Netflix, Peacock, Prime, and such that grab their bits and pieces. But if I can watch the bulk of the NFL under one platform, I will be happier.

From what I've been told, bundling may not be available for discount.............profits will likely mean individual packages. And some bundling may occur with unwanted packages needlessly increasing prices. I guess we will all find out.

Not sure how these guys play through back pain. Especially a QB getting hit from the blindside and the torque it puts on the back. I've had two back surgeries, 1st, a laminectomy then a fusion of that same spot. I've never been 100% since.....Hard for me to think Stafford will ever be 100% again with the pounding they go through.

It's par for the course for the NFL..............According to the wording, it turns out that players still can use smelling salts under the NFL’s new policy, it’s just that teams can't provide it to them, The NFL is certainly concerned with player safety! :toropalm:

At least the trainers can't stick them under the player's nose while he's passed out on the field. What happens in the tent stays in the tent, I guess.

49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk continues to rehab from tearing his ACL and MCL in October of last season. With Aiyuk still on the PUP list, his rehab is coming along, but very slowly and he will not be ready for week 1 and beyond.

Charger's LT Rashawn Slater was just carted off the practice field with a leg injury.

Just about a week ago, the Chargers announced they had agreed to a four-year, $114 million extension that includes $92 million guaranteed with him making Slater the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

The Chargers' depth chart has no backup LT. The Chargers not really appearing to take the interior of the offensive line seriously this offseason. Joe Alt the Chargers' 22 year old 2024 Draft pic will probably take over this position............an awfully big responsibility for a young inexperienced player known as a right tackle.
