NFL Random Thought of the Day

Broncos LB. Dre Greenlaw not having much luck recently. Evidently he tore his Quadriceps while working out.
It is unknown whether Greenlaw will require surgery to repair it. It is therefore a partial tear. When comparing outcomes for surgery vs conservative treatment, return to play was from 33% to 67% after surgery and were 89% for conservative management.

As I mention, luck has not followed him in that additionally Greenlaw tore his Achilles in Super Bowl LVIII to end the 2023 season and missed most of last season before a brief return in week 14 and 15 before knee and calf soreness related to his Achilles ended his season.

With his history of the 2 major lower limb injuries, expectations for his recovery, return to play and return performance level is much lower than for each injury singularly.
Now the team is saying that his quadriceps is not "torn.".................it is "strained." The expect him to be ready to return in about 2 months. This is to be seen. His return performance is also very much to be seen.

I was actually hoping that the Texans could experiment with this big boy.

464-pound defensive tackle Desmond Watson signs with Buccaneers
Published April 27, 2025 11:22 PM

At six-foot-six and 464 pounds, defensive tackle Desmond Watson would have been the largest draft pick in NFL history. He was not drafted.

Via the Associated Press, Watson has instead signed with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent.

It’ll be a homecoming for Watson, who grew up 20 minutes from Tampa, in Plant City, Florida.

He played college football for four seasons at the University of Florida, without missing a single game.

Watson knows he needs to lose weight. Since arriving at Gainesville, he has been consistently growing. He started out at 385.

He was 415 in his second year. As a junior, he weighed 435. Last year, he was listed at 449. At his Pro Day, he was 15 pounds heavier.

He also bench-pressed 225 pounds 36 times that day, more than anyone who was invited to the Scouting Combine.

The Bucs already have a 347-pound defensive tackle in Vita Vea.

Watson has played a little fullback, too. He had one rushing attempt, for a one-yard gain.

Forty years after 350-pound William “The Refrigerator” Perry took the league by storm as a periodic offensive option for the 1985 Bears, Watson could perhaps get a chance to do the same thing. (Desmond “The Walk-In Cooler” Watson has a nice ring to it.)
First, Watson will have to make the team. He’ll get a chance to do that in Tampa.

The Saints were discussed as a possible landing spot for quarterback Shedeur Sanders leading up to the draft, but they took tackle Kelvin Banks in the first round and then selected another quarterback in the second round.

Tyler Shough was the choice in New Orleans and head coach Kellen Moore said on Friday night that the team had a lot of “good conversations” about the quarterbacks available this year when asked about the gap between Shough and others. Moore was later asked specifically about Sanders, who has not been picked yet.

“He was right in those conversations,” Moore said. “These are really tough decisions. He’s a really good player. What he accomplished at Colorado and when you watch the film, it’s really, really good. I think really highly of him. Ultimately, as you go through it, you’ve got to make a decision. We felt like Tyler was the one for us.”

The NFL revenues keep climbing and climbing..................while their hands are still out for charity from taxpayers to pay for their toys. A half billion dollars is NOT a little amount................and if it is such a little amount, let the NFL pay for it!

Report: Commanders, D.C. mayor plan to announce stadium deal on Monday

A deal is in place. All that’s left is the approval.

The Washington Post reports that the Commanders and D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser have reached an agreement on a new facility to be built at the site of the defunct RFK Stadium. The deal is expected to be announced on Monday in a joint news conference featuring Bowser and Commanders owner Josh Harris.

Approval will still be needed both from the D.C. Council and from Harris’s NFL business partners.

Prior reports pegged the stadium cost at $3 billion, with D.C. paying as little as $500 million.

An effort is underway to secure enough signatures to put a stadium initiative on the June 2025 ballot in D.C. Also, multiple D.C. Council members have expressed concern about the use of public money for the stadium.

The mayor and the team will be hoping to generate enough public support to fuel the approval process. And there is plenty of sentiment among the fan base to return the team from Maryland to D.C.

If, however, the question ends up on a ballot, it likely will fail. Even though pro football is king, the voters who don’t care about football generally outnumber those who do. Given the current public sentiment that taxpayer money shouldn’t be used to subsidize multi-billionaires, the best chance for success comes from keeping it out of the hands of the voters and hoping to get enough D.C. Council members to get behind it.

The other owners could be concerned about the deal, too. Currently, these projects typically entail a 50-50 split between private and public resources, with the team/league on the hook for overages. If the Commanders end up responsible to a significant majority of the expense, other owners could be concerned about the precedent being used against them in their own markets.

Florio says that this injury has come out of nowhere. Yet ever since Carr's 2023 A-C joint shoulder separation, I've been hearing that he has been getting injections in the A-C joint in order to play last season. I can't see how he avoids surgery to improve his problem............whether it's removing the end of the collar bone or having stabilizing surgery.

Esiason: Multiple owners told their teams to take Shedeur Sanders off the board
Published April 28, 2025 07:51 PM

Now that the dust is settling on the stunning Shedeur Sanders draft-weekend rollercoaster, more specific details are emerging about the attitude more than a few teams had about him.

Via Jaclyn Hendricks of the New York Post, former NFL quarterback and long-time NFL analyst Boomer Esiason addressed the issue during his morning show on WFAN.

“When you listen to this kid talk, right prior or at the Combine, about how if you want a new culture in your locker room, I’m the guy to do that, I can turn it around, he’s very high on himself, and I think he’s very off-putting to many, many coaches and general managers in the league,” Esiason said.

“I’m telling you right now, and I know this after talking to three different personnel people in the NFL this weekend, they didn’t even have him on their board. They took him off, and they took him off because the owner said, ‘Take him off, I don’t want that guy. I don’t want this . . . entitled person on our team,’ and I don’t blame them.”

And there’s the difference between granting anonymity to sources for opinions and granting anonymity for facts. Giving an unnamed source the ability to say whatever they want to say, however generally and negatively they want to say it, is no different than the venom spewed by Johnny5464369839 on Twitter. And media outlets that amplify those opinions are no different from the social-media sites that revel in allowing people to say whatever they want to say without anyone knowing who they are.

Here, Esiason was specific. Multiple owners didn’t want Sanders on the board.

Of course, it’s impossible to prove that it’s accurate, unless and until multiple owners will come out and say, on the record, that they didn’t want Sanders. But something caused him to free fall to a spot that lands well below his objective talent.

The core problem seems to be that Shedeur didn’t take the pre-draft process seriously. His dad, Deion, may have done the same thing, as evidenced by his refusal to take the Giants’ lengthy test. He told them he won’t be on the board when they draft — and he was right.

But Deion’s talent was objectively off the charts. Shedeur didn’t have that same level of skill. For those who aren’t no-brainer, top-of-the-class prospects, failing to play the pre-draft game can have consequences. For Shedeur, it did.

He was asked over the weekend by reporters if he regrets anything from the pre-draft process.

“Do I have any regrets?” Shedeur said. “I feel like in life it’s always a way I can improve. So it’s always in different areas I’m able to improve. And some things that I could have done at the time that seemed right at the time I could have went about in a different way and that was like more during the season and stuff like that.”

Moving forward, the question is whether he takes what happened to heart and adjusts accordingly, or whether he becomes resentful, with his anger hardening into a belief that he was disrespected repeatedly by everyone — including the team that passed on him over and over before eventually throwing him a lifeline.

It’s up to him. He’ll be more likely to prove those who skipped over him wrong if he realizes his own responsibility for the outcome and resolves to address those issues.

Browns are aiming for a lot of drama:

If the WR-needy Texans cut ties with Johnson after less than 2 weeks, that should tell you something. The Browns continue to be a cesspool.

BTW, in the past Draft, if there were any smarts in the Browns building, they could have had Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. But smarts and Browns have never had a close relationship! :rake:

Looking at the last statement in the article................Of course, Deion won't interfere! :foottap:

Deion Sanders thanked Buccaneers for giving Shilo a shot
Published April 29, 2025 09:28 AM

Former Colorado safety Shilo Sanders took a back seat to his brother, former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, during the pre-draft process. After the draft, Shilo went in a different direction.

He hired agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey to help him find a team as an undrafted free agent. They placed him with the Buccaneers. G.M. Jason Licht discussed the development on Monday night during an appearance on WDAE radio.

“We’ve talked about [Shilo Sanders] quite a bit in the process,” Licht said, via JoeBucsFan.com.

Licht explained that Rosenhaus called the team on Saturday, asking if they would sign Shilo as an undrafted free agent. Licht said he and coach Todd Bowles instantly decided to do it.

After they did it, a call came from Shilo’s dad, Deion Sanders.

“Coach Prime called him Saturday night and thanked him for giving [Shilo] a fair shot,” Licht said. And Licht added that Shilo
will get a fair shot.

Any team that gives Shilo a shot needs to be ready for it to be a fair shot, because Deion has the public profile to call out anyone who doesn’t, in Deion’s view, give either Shilo or Shedeur a fair shot.

Report: Bill Belichick’s girlfriend delayed CBS interview for 30 minutes after storming out
Published April 28, 2025 10:59 PM

When the bizarre Bill Belichick book-tour interview first surfaced on Sunday, we explained that CBS Mornings included his girlfriend’s instruction that he not talk about how they met because it wasn’t the only time she interrupted the proceedings.

We had no idea.

TMZ reports that, at one point, Jordan Hudson “stormed out of the room and delayed shooting for 30 minutes.”

Per the report, there were “numerous other instances” of Hudson interrupting Belichick, beyond the one specific interjection that made the final cut. She reportedly “would stop and correct him” when he was answering questions about football.

TMZ also reports that CBS producers were surprised that Belichick arrived for the interview accompanied only by Hudson.

There was no one from his publisher, the University of North Carolina, or any other representative present.

TMZ also reports that a second session with Belichick had been planned, but CBS scrapped it.

The TMZ item ends with a quote that qualifies as a top-five finalist for understatement of the decade. While pointing out that folks at UNC are worried about Hudson’s influence over Belichick in his role as Tar Heels coach, TMZ quotes an unnamed source as saying there’s a “growing sense this could become a problem.”

It’s been a problem. For weeks. She’s not employed in any capacity by the football program, but she receives and sends emails.

She was heavily involved in negotiations, we’re told, with NFL Films regarding a potential documentary/infomercial regarding the UNC program.

The situation has been simmering for a while. The CBS interview quite possibly has cranked it up to full boil. And our guess is that, in the coming days and weeks, there could be more reports from TMZ and others regarding the extent to which she is exerting influence and control over Belichick and others within a major college football program for which she does not actually work.

However things play out at UNC, these accounts won’t help Belichick’s effort to get back to the NFL and continue his pursuit of Don Shula’s all-time wins record, while also maintaining distance between himself and Andy Reid.
