NFL Random Thought of the Day

Jake Long has sustained an Achilles tendon rupture and is done for the season. This is just another major injury in a long list of previous ones, including a right ACL rupture in 2014 and another right ACL rupture in 2015, just 7 months after the first. He didn't look good this season and he is likely to be further adversely affected when he returns next year.

Eagles guard Brandon Brooks was hospitalized Monday due to an illness and will miss Monday night’s game vs. the Packers.

I guarantee that his "illness" is a recurrent stomach ulcer. In 2014, he was hospitalized for an "illness" which was later diagnosed as a stomach ulcer. In 2015, he lost significant weight shortly before he was again hospitalized for an "illness" which again was later diagnosed with a recurrent stomach ulcer.

Could this be the start of something more serious for him? Like stomach cancer? This is eerily similar to my path to stomach cancer.

Usually an endoscopy (camera exam) in situations like this is empirically performed. During this procedure, biopsies of the ulcer are performed and submitted to Pathology for tissue pathology diagnosis (inflammatory vs. cancerous), and to Microbiology for culture evaluation for the bacteria Helicobacter Pylori which is the most common cause of gastritis and benign stomach ulcers. The longer the Heliobacter Pylori is uncontrolled (including recurrences following treatment) and the inflammatory changes are allowed to persist, the greater the risk that the gastritis and ulcer undergo a cancerous transformation........both in the stomach AND the duodenum. Combine that with any alcohol intake (but especially significant intake) and regular use of NSAIDs (Motrin [Ibuprofen], Advil, Aleve, etc.) for football aches and pains (both also common causes of gastritis), the risks of inflammatory changes to the stomach leading to cancer further increase. It is worrisome that Brooks continues to be hospitalized for this condition.

Jeff Fisher digging himself deeper in LA, now fighting with Eric Dickerson:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...een-eric-dickersons-criticism-and-his-access/

Here’s what Dickerson claims Fisher said: “I just wanted to call you. I want to tell you a few things here. I don’t have time for this, but I’m going to tell you. You’re not going to be talking about the football team, talking about our team, talking about my coaches, expecting to get things from this football team. We’re not going to give you anything. We’re not going to support you in anything. As long as I’m here as coach, we feel uncomfortable with you coming on the sideline. The players are uncomfortable with that. So as long as I’m head coach here, I’m just going to let you know it’s not going to happen.”

Sammy Watkins didn't practice today due to returned significant soreness of the foot that suffered a Jones fracture in the offseason.which led to surgery. He returned in TC and ended up being able to play only 2 regular season games before his foot shut him down again and placed on IR. As we've already seen with many high-profile NFL players in the past 2 years (eg., D. Bryant, J. Edelman, D. Parker) with a recurrent postoperative problem, to have the best chance of definitively correcting the problem, the player requires a second surgery to remove the screw in the bone and replace it with a larger bore screw and reinforce it with bone grafts. Unfortunately, the decision was made to not undergo another surgery and to attempt to treat the problem with conservative rehab in order to allow him the possibility of returning as the IR designee. After only 1 game back, his absence from practice today likely heralds the beginnings of the road back to surgery.

Mike Zimmmer underwent emergency eye surgery yesterday for a detached retina. He won't be coaching tonight's game. His condition started with a small tear in his retina last month and has since had 2 procedures for this condition most likely laser repair. During a walk-through yesterday, his vision deteriorated acutely and following exam, he was immediately taken to surgery.........his third procedure in a month. His retina had now detached. This condition is serious as it could threaten permanent visual loss in that eye if the treatment is unsuccessful. It will require prolonged rest, a good bit of bed rest. I would not expect that he is allowed to return to coaching for a while.

Wishing Zimmer the best for a full recovery.........and hoping he does not try to shortcut his surgeon's recommendations in hopes of returning sooner.

Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski to have back surgery

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will undergo back surgery on Friday and is expected to miss two months, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday.
Gronkowski left Sunday's game against the New York Jets with an injury. A source told Schefter that ultimately Gronkowski was diagnosed with a herniated disk. The need for surgery was first reported by The Buffalo News.

This will be Gronkowski's third back surgery.
He has had two previous surgeries to repair herniated disks in his back -- in 2009, when he was at the University of Arizona and missed the entire season, and in 2013, in his fourth season with the Patriots, when he underwent surgery in June and didn't return until Week 7.

Gronkowski will not be back this year. The 2 month estimate is as gross an underestimate of rehab time for return to play as it was for Watt. Even it were a legitimate 3-5 month estimate, it would necessarily reveal that his disc surgery would be a microdiscectomy of a different level of his spine. There is no way that it would be a 3rd procedure at the same lumbar level.........unless it was a lumbar fusion of the that level, which would normally be a 1 year recovery in a non athlete...............and a career ender in a player like Gronkowski.

Here is an August 23, 2016 post I made concerning Watt's situation when he was anticipating his 2nd microdiscectomy. It is quite pertinent to this discussion as well as potential Watt's fate.

As my post following his extensive bilateral sports hernia and back surgeries have reflected, I have been very guarded about his future.........not only as Superman, but as a football player. If this is indeed true, this is exactly what I was concerned about, after his cumulative major core injuries. The microdiscectomy procedure removes the initially damaged portion of a disk. Microdiscectomies are found to fail, many times after a period of relief, and back and nerve compression problems continue or return in ~25% of cases and the surgery must be repeated. The next option usually considered (if there is enough disk material that can be retained) is another microdiscectomy, which again can be therapeutic to variable extent and variable amount of time. This simply is because it has lost some of its water content which causes decreased shock absorption with uneven pressure on the compromised disk. This then tends to lead to continued structural changes and instability. ............and this is the case in an accountant or a lawyer. Now address an NFL lineman who is very tall, heavy and continually requires bending, torquing and twisting of the body against resistance, and you can imagine the additional stress the back (especially the lower back) and their disks will endure. If the second microdiscectomy fails, typically the next option given is a removal of the disc with insertion of a prosthetic disk or with a vertebral fusion.............both of these extremely long recoveries........and very likely career ending. I hope that this is not the fate of one of the NFL's greatest players.

One last thought. This could be another disk level that Watt is dealing with. When one level is compromised, it is all too common for an adjacent level to be affected concomitantly or in the future.

Can the Dallas Cowboys go 15-1 this season?
Only four games left and they all look winnable.
at Giants, Bucs, Lions and at Eagles...

They'll want to avenge the home loss against the Giants back in Week 1. A 20-19 loss that they nearly pulled out. 11 wins in a row since then. Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot are flat out balling like rock stars as rookies. It's very impressive to watch.

How far can the Dallas Cowboys go? They've been playing solid football for nearly three months now. These aren't your "we'll find a way to choke the big games Romo-led Cowboys." There is something truly special about that kid, Dak Prescott. And Ezekiel Elliot is the best running back in the league. Even though he's running behind the best offensive line in the league. It was the same way for Emmitt Smith when the Cowboys had won three Super Bowls in four years during his best years.

Major injuries continue strike major players. Jay Cutler has unsuccessfully tried to rehab a right shoulder labrum tear that he suffered on 11/20. He will now go on IR for surgery.

The Vikings started the season 5-0 but are only 1-6 in their last 7 games. 6-6 and a .500 team overall. I wish the Texans had played them right now instead of earlier in the season. They don't look like a good team at all. Their O-Line is weak and soft due to injuries, and Sam Bradford is what we all thought he would be.

Von Miller...a stand up guy! I'm impressed.

Von Miller gives every player in AFC West custom bottle of wine, Thank You note
http://www.denverpost.com/2016/12/02/von-miller-wine-gift-afc-west-thank-you/

Broncos linebacker Von Miller gifted every player in the AFC West — including practice-squad players and those on injured reserve — with a bottle of custom wine and a Thank You note. That’s nearly 290 bottles.

It is an honor and a privilege to take the field and compete with you twice a year. We are so fortunate to have this opportunity to fulfill our childhood dreams of playing in the NFL. The blood, sweat, aches and pains, and endless hours spent watching film are a testament to the love and dedication we have for this game. So take a moment, reflect on all your successes, and enjoy your accomplishment. Appreciate those who have helped you get this far, and start working towards your next childhood dream.

Thank you for helping to make our game great!

Joe McKnight shot to death in New Orleans:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/joe-mcknight-dead_us_5840a489e4b017f37fe3cadd

Former NFL running back Joe McKnight was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon in an apparent road rage incident in Louisiana, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office has confirmed to The Huffington Post.

A source at the scene told The Times-Picayune that she saw McKnight apologizing to the visibly agitated assailant at an intersection in Terrytown, Louisiana. The assailant, who was yelling, shot McKnight, proceeded to stand over him and yell “I told you don’t you **** with me,” then shot him again.

Police told HuffPost that the incident occurred at roughly 2:43 p.m. McKnight was identified at the scene.

As I suspected, it has been revealed that Watkins is "still dealing with a broken bone in his foot." That confirms that his previous surgery and subsequent rehab was unsuccessful and has resulted in a nonunion of the original Jones fracture. Evidently he will attempt to play despite this condition. Doing so will be difficult due to the pain involved........but more importantly, it can result in a complete splintering of the bone with a potentially much more difficult situation for surgical reconstruction than simply replacing the screw holding together the fractured bone with a larger screw. I do not see Watkins lasting very long if he returns to the field.

Well, I believe we have our answer...................Gronkowski is walking already (follow link below)...............his surgery had to be a microdiscectomy...........but his 3rd back surgery would not have then been at the same level as the other 2.

People keep saying that Gronk will be out until next year, but isn't that injury just a two-month thing? Couldn't he realistically return for Super Bowl 51 here in Houston on February 5 if the Patriots make it to the big game? That would be a little over two months from now. Two months and two days (December 3 is today).

Two month is not the new norm for an contact athlete like Watt and Gronkowski returning to game play from a lumbar microdiscectomy just because that's when they want it to be. Perfect example is Watt. Keep in mind that when players like them have undergone such a surgery on one vertebral level, you can be assured that they have already been developing problems at other levels. A microdiscectomy seldom "cures" anything .........it only temporizes larger issues. Like I repeatedly presented in the past, Watt should not have returned to game play before 12 weeks. And as opposed to some other expert opinions that stated coming back early would not result in further injury, just lesser performance.............well that seldom plays out as expected.......and there are indeed real consequences to unrealistically pushing the envelope.

Gronk placed on IR today, and since the Pats already used their return designation on Jacoby Brisset, he's done for this season - even if the Pats are the AFC Super Bowl Rep.

Rolando McClain suspended indefinitely
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 2, 2016, 4:17 PM EST

The NFL career of Rolando McClain may have come to an end with yet another suspension.

McClain has been suspended indefinitely, the NFL made official today. McClain has violated the league’s substance-abuse policy again, which means he would have a lengthy road back that would require treatment and an ability to pass drug tests consistently.

It’s hard to see McClain ever returning at this point. He has already missed all of this season for a previous violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. Given his history of off-field problems, he may never find another team willing to give him a chance even if he does get reinstated by the league.

At age 27, McClain may be done in the NFL.

Seems more like a sociopath likely to be involved in more future incidents.

Man who killed Joe McKnight previously cited for battery at same intersection
December 3, 2016, 8:59 AM EST

The man who shot and killed former NFL player Joe McKnight over an apparent traffic incident had previously been cited for battery over a confrontation at the very same intersection where he killed McKnight.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that Ronald Gasser, who admits he shot and killed McKnight on Thursday, was issued a misdemeanor summons for simple battery in 2006, after another motorist called 911 and reported that Gasser had followed him to a gas station and punched him over a traffic dispute. That dispute took place at Holmes Boulevard and Behrman Highway in the New Orleans suburb of Terrytown, the very same intersection where Gasser shot McKnight.

In the 2006 incident, police say the victim had first called a phone number on a pickup truck to report that the truck was being driven unsafely. It turned out that Gasser was the one driving the truck, and the phone number listed on the truck was Gasser’s cell phone. Gasser answered the call for unsafe driving, berated the caller, figured out which nearby car the call was coming from, and followed the man.

Gasser’s misdemeanor battery summons was later dismissed for reasons that the Sheriff’s Office now says are unclear.

After Gasser killed McKnight on Thursday, he stayed at the scene, acknowledged to police that he had committed the shooting, and gave officers the gun. Although Gasser was initially brought to a police station, he was released without charges. Gasser claims he shot McKnight in self defense, and Louisiana law allows people to shoot to kill if they believe they are being threatened.

What about the Texans? Was J.J. Watt placed on IR with the return designation? Can he return for the playoffs if we make it? Who is our return designation player?

I bet the Falcons' fans are going nuts about right now. Heck I didn't watch the game and I'm pissed on their behalf. I've seen it several times this season that teams start chasing points and going for 2 in unnecessary situations. The Falcons did it at least twice. Had they just kicked the extra point the first time they wouldn't have been in that situation. Horrible coaching decision to go for 2 unless it's absolutely necessary.

I'm not sure who was playing (Cowboys?) where both teams went for 2 all game and left a combined 10+ points on the field through missed conversions.

There is no designation anymore. A team can bring back 1 of their choice

Designation or no designation, Watt is not coming back this season........or post season if there is one. Stupid doesn't have to be repeated.

He's only allowed to walk right now. He's not coming back and if his career path follows the career path of Shaun Cody who had the same surgery, then Watt's career is likely done?

If Watt does make it back we shouldn't expect the old HOF level Watt. I would be surprised if the Texans get back an above avg Watt back. Am I correct on this? It's time to start planning ahead. It was really stupid of the Texans medical staff to let Watt come back too soon. This seems to be a reoccurring theme with the Texans org.

High blood pressure is the leading risk factor for retinal detachment. Postoperatively, the primary reason for the recommended rest period is for the avoidance of an acute spike of blood pressure and re-detachment of the retina. It would be very difficult to for a coach to avoid these spikes in the heat of a game, even if the coach does not show his emotions outwardly.

I expect Watt to dominate, like always, and win another defensive player of the year award in 2017. I'm not expecting any less once he's back on the field.

I am going to be cautious on watt. His mind may say go, but body may say yeah right
Once you hurt your back, you just arent quite the same (heck with any injury, i guess).

I think that i am more frustrated with the texans and texan doctors to allow him to play in that bad of shape.

Doctson, after being held out last week with an Achilles "tweak" that he had suffered ~ 2 weeks ago in mini-camp..........now is still on the sideline. Once an Achilles strain occurs, only extended rest (not just a couple of weeks) will allow it to properly heal. I wouldn't be surprised for this to be a nagging problem this season for the young man, as once this happens, it can easily become a recurrent, chronic and progressive problem. If not taken seriously, an overt rupture can occur sometime down the line. I would not want to be hearing anything about any of our young Texans WRs starting out their careers with even a "tweak" of their Achilles. Going with Fuller could end up being a very fortunate choice for the Texans before it's all over.

Fuller has had his share of injury. However............

Fuller: 10 games 35 rec 508 yds 14.5 yds/rec 2 TDs

Doctson:
2 games 2 rec 66 yds 33 yds/rec 0 TDs
(57 of his total yds occurred due to the amazing total lack of coverage on that play)

A little bit into the 2nd qtr. Derek Carr is 3-9 for 10 yards. Alex Smith is 9-14 for 155 yards & a TD

Tyreek (sp?) Hill is what Will Fuller was supposed to be

Eh... I don't think we wanted Fuller returning punts.

Hill also had that big play to the middle of the field, before KC's rushing TD. They caught Oakland covering him with a LB. Has anyone ever put a LB on Fuller?

But yeah, Hill is having a heck of a season.

To be fair Reid has Smith playing QB, BOB has Os.

BOB rightfully doesn't trust OS accuracy throwing the ball in the middle of the field.

After watching Derek Carr through three & a half qtrs, I'm convinced Brock has at least two broken fingers on his throwing hand.
