NFL Random Thought of the Day

Not sure who's playing D for the Bengals in this game, but the Colts just went 80 yds down the field and scored a passing TD like it was nothing...

Shut down twice in the past two months for an "arm problem." Remember that not only did he suffered a glenoid fracture, but a truly undefined rotator cuff injury.................either theoretically could be causing him a long-term issue.

Browns experiencing déjà vu with Deshaun Watson injuries

It's a new year but the Cleveland Browns are seeing the same issues with Deshaun Watson. Is it already time to worry?

By Randy Gurzi | 8:47 PM EDT

Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns went through a roller coaster in 2023. The veteran quarterback delivered one of his better games with the franchise in Week 3 over the Tennessee Titans but suffered a shoulder injury.

Originally, it was said to be minor and the team believed he would play in Week 4. Roughly 90 minutes before the game, they announced he was out and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson would get the start against the Baltimore Ravens. To make matters worse, DTR was unaware he was starting until then, leaving him in a tough spot.

Watson said he was ready to go a few weeks later but ended up returning for just five passes against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6. Again, he missed another week and played in Weeks 8 and 9 before being shut down for the season.

He had surgery and throughout the offseason, he was said to be on the right path. However, there are once again concerning reports.

Watson was supposed to start this Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks but that might not happen. Some were hoping he wouldn't play due to the injuries on the offensive line but that's not the reason for the concern. Instead, it's due to Watson being shut down on Wednesday after dealing with "arm soreness."

This is second time Browns shut Deshaun Watson down in the last month

This isn't a new issue either. At the end of July, Watson ended practice early due to soreness. This was originally reported by Mary Kay Cabot, who said the team believed it wasn't a concern.

Now with the final preseason game coming up and Watson again being shut down, Cleveland is saying they're not concerned. The coaching staff is proclaiming he's going to be ready to go by Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys but this is still eerily similar to how things went in 2023.

At this point, we need to see Watson play before believing there's no cause for alarm.

The NFL's gambling policy is a total joke.

NFL: Training reminds players not to bet in states where gambling isn’t legal
By Mike Florio
Published August 22, 2024 09:52 PM

Earlier today, we pointed out the NFL’s six main reminders for players regarding the gambling policy should have a seventh:

Don’t bet where sports betting is still not legal.

The NFL reached out in response to the post and pointed out that the player training sessions do indeed mention the issue of illegal gambling. The league sent a slide from the presentation. However, the message is relegated to a box at the bottom of a three-part checklist regarding legal gambling activities.

It says: “Gambling must be legal where you are betting. Sports betting remains illegal in 11 states, including Club home states: CA, GA, MN, MO, TX. Also illegal in AL, AK, ID, OK, SC and UT.”

That’s fine. Our point is it needs to be more than a footnote on a slide. It should be a key part of the messaging.

And, as mentioned earlier, it should be broadened into an admonition against ever using a bookie, in a state where gambling is legal or illegal. Because bookies operate on credit. And gambling credit leads to gambling debt. And gambling debt leads to trouble.

NFL suspends Cardinals WR Zay Jones five games after domestic violence accusation
By Michael David Smith

Cardinals wide receiver Zay Jones has been suspended for the first five games of the regular season.

The NFL suspended Jones for violating the NFL personal conduct policy following an accusation that he abused the mother of his child, injuring her neck.

Jones was arrested in November but prosecutors chose not to pursue the case in March.

The Rams have lost their starting left tackle Alaric Jackson for the first two weeks of the regular season for violation of the Personal Conduct Policy.

Cardinals 1st round rookie defensive lineman Darius Robinson has suffered a calf injury during practice yesterday.............Gannon was upset that someone on the team made this injury public............an injury which occurred during a closed practice. The Cardinals have already lost their best pass rusher, BJ Ojulari, to a season-ending torn ACL.

Cleveland Browns Harshly Criticized Over 'Weird' Deshaun Watson Situation

The Cleveland Browns have received harsh crticism over their "weird" situation with Deshaun Watson.

The Cleveland Browns are entering their final preseason game of the year against the Seattle Seahawks this week. With that in mind, there are still a ton of question marks surrounding the team, including about the status of quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Heading into the preseason finale, the Browns have been harshly criticized over their "weird" situation with Watson.

Jason Lloyd of The Athletic took a look at Watson and his current "arm soreness" issues that has kept him held out of practice.
“The whole thing is weird, the vibe around this entire camp. It’s just weird. It’s the only best word to describe it. It doesn’t make sense.”

Lloyd is questioning why Watson has been limited in practice and what exactly he's dealing with.

Recently, head coach Kevin Stefanski had this to say about his starting quarterback's injury status.

“Deshaun was a little sore. I decided to just hold back a little bit with him, but not overly concerned."

In addition to the injury question, Lloyd also believes that Watson and Cleveland have not been on the same page about his preseason playing time.

“There were people in Deshaun’s camp who were making it sound like he wouldn’t play in the preseason. And then Kevin comes out and says he’s going to play. Then Deshaun comes out and says it’s news to me. And now Kevin backtracks and says we’ll reassess as we get closer to the game. Then Deshaun just shuts it down. Yeah, it’s weird.”

Honestly, Lloyd has a very strong point. It does seem like Watson may be the one trying to shut down the idea of playing in the preseason. If that is the case, it's a major concern.

Watson has been a massive disappointment in his first two years with the Browns. He has only played in 12 regular season games in the two years he has been in Cleveland.

An NFL analyst recently revealed a brutal breakdown about Watson's failures so far with the Browns.

All of that being said, fans can only hope that Cleveland and Watson are on the same page. They also hope that Watson is all in on turning his career around and getting back on track in 2024.

Only time will tell, but for right now things definitely do seem weird.

Nothing weird, Deshaun Watson controls when he plays. I am waiting for Caserio to trade Noah Brown, Quiteriano, Robert Woods and Dameon Pierce to Browns for round 2, 3, 4 and 5 picks in 2025.

Neither Florio's or the NFL's response makes any sense for not placing Rice on the Commissioner's Exempt List.

Both should be removed from the field in regular season. Both are being allowed to practice now.

The language of the Personal Conduct Policy authorizes placement of a player on the Commissioner Exempt list “when a player is formally charged with: (1) a felony offense; or (2) a crime of violence, meaning that he is accused of having used physical force . . . to injure or threaten a person.”
Here’s the difference between Zay Jones and Rashee Rice
By Mike Florio
Published August 23, 2024 10:25 PM

In the wake of the announcement that Cardinals receiver Zay Jones will miss five games for violating the Personal Conduct Policy after a domestic violence incident last year, some have asked why Jones will be banished to start the season, but why Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice will be playing.

The answer is simple. Jones’s criminal case ended before the NFL turned its attention to the question of whether and to what extent he should be disciplined. Rice’s case is still pending. And the NFL has not interviewed him.

Because Rice’s case doesn’t involve domestic violence, it’s far less likely that he’ll be placed on paid leave while the criminal case proceeds.

Rice is facing eight felony charges
arising from a March 2024 street-racing incident in Dallas. We’ve seen the video. It’s hard to imagine he’ll walk away without legal consequence. Which makes it hard to imagine he’ll avoid a suspension.

Eventually. But not until the criminal case is over. Which easily could delay the timetable beyond the upcoming season.

Shanahan was heard saying that it was a "knee sprain"...........not an ACL. An MRI is scheduled. I wouldn't pay too much attention to Shanahan's statement.

49ers’ Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos suffered knee injuries in preseason finale
By Michael David Smith

Two 49ers defensive ends suffered knee injuries during Friday night’s preseason finale in Las Vegas.

San Francisco defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos both hurt their knees on the same drive, and both are scheduled for MRIs to assess the damage.

“It’s never really a fun thing going into these games when you want these guys to play because I truly believe it helps them, but you want to make sure they stay healthy, too,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “So it wasn’t a good feeling watching Yetur, and then Leonard the next play. But besides those two I thought we came out pretty healthy in the game and hopefully we’ll get some good news on them too.”

From what I have found out, Bland is dealing with a Jones fracture. Hoe will undergo repair Monday. Because of significant refracture rate and non healing rate, if the Cowboys are smart, they will give him at least 8 weeks to return.

Cowboys lose DaRon Bland for 6-8 weeks with foot injury
By Michael David Smith
Published August 24, 2024 02:49 PM

Cowboys All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland will miss the start of the season.

The Cowboys announced today that Bland is out for six to eight weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.

“DaRon Bland experienced foot discomfort on Wednesday of last week during training camp in Oxnard,” the Cowboys said in a statement. “Subsequent imaging revealed a stress fracture in his foot. He will undergo surgery to repair the injury and is currently projected to be out for 6-8 weeks.”

That’s a big blow to the Cowboys’ defense. Last year Bland led the NFL with nine interceptions and 209 interception return yards, and he set a new NFL record by returning five interceptions for touchdowns. He was named a first-team All-Pro and finished fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Rookie fifth-round draft pick Caelen Carson will likely be the next man up while Bland is down.

Cardinals HC Ganon says he is still waiting on the MRI results for Dlineman Darius Robinson's calf.
There should be little doubt though that he will miss at least 6 weeks as this is at least a Grade II tear.

Condolences to his family...

What I've learned is that Allesandress underwent a surgery earlier this summer. Complications ensued for which he was being treated...............and that is what has been referred to as his "acute illness."

RIP to a well-respected person and coach.

CB Damarri Mathis was injured on the 2nd play of the game. His right leg bent underneath him and the pile fell on him as he assisted in the tackle of Cardinals RB Tony Jones. He was carted off the field with an apparent ankle injury.
