NFL Random Thought of the Day

Dak Prescott on obligation in contract talks: It’s always about pushing the envelope for the next man
By Charean Williams
Published August 2, 2024 11:13 PM

Dak Prescott said last week he feels an obligation to other quarterbacks and teammates in contract talks. He was asked to expound on that Friday.

“I’m a guy that grew up with two older brothers,” Prescott said, via Todd Archer of ESPN. “You understand what a brotherhood means, not only for just this team but the fraternity of the NFL and the players. The money is out there and the money can happen. It can be done. There’s ways to make everything work for both ways. That’s in that sense it’s always about pushing the envelope for the next man.”

Prescott is entering the final year of his four-year, $140 million contract, scheduled to count $55 million against the salary cap.

His no-trade and no-tag clauses give him all the leverage.

Prescott can choose whether he decides to become a free agent, and he isn’t likely to accept anything less than an annual average of $60 million.

“I’ve never truly cared about the number, whether it was the first time in the franchise tag and the negotiations or now,” Prescott said. “That’s why I said I have an agent that I’m confident in and a front office that we can figure out something for both of us that makes sense.”

Owner Jerry Jones said Friday that talks are continuing with Prescott and holdout receiver CeeDee Lamb.

“I would not have a legitimate progress point there at all [with Prescott], and I really don’t have one for Lamb either,” Jones said. “And it’s not negative. I’m just not thinking that it will do any good to talk about progress.”

Myles Garrett has not practiced in over 3 weeks until today because of a hamstring suffered the last day of mandatory minicamp. Not a great way to start TC/season.

It should have read active/non football injury list.........not the non-injury list. :toropalm:

Bengals activate Trent Brown
By Josh Alper
Published August 4, 2024 01:19 PM

The Bengals are set to get tackle Trent Brown on the field for the first time this summer.

Brown passed his physical on Sunday and the Bengals will take him off of the non-injury list as a result. Brown went on the list when camp opened last month.

The Bengals signed Brown as a free agent this offseason. He spent the last three seasons with the Patriots and also spent the 2018 season in New England before joining the Raiders for a couple of years.

Brown is expected to be the right tackle in Cincinnati with Orlando Brown Jr. on the left side. The Bengals also have first-round pick Amarius Mims on hand this season.

Jordan Addison faces two misdemeanors after recent DUI incident
Published August 5, 2024 01:20 PM

Last month, Vikings receiver Jordan Addison was arrested after police found him asleep at the wheel near LAX. He has now been charged with two misdemeanors.

Via Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Addison was charged last Wednesday with two misdemeanors.

Addison is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with blood-alcohol content in excess of the legal limit of .08 percent.

He’s due in court for an arraignment on October 7.

Under the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, Addison faces a suspension of three games. The number can be increased by aggravating circumstances such as: felonious conduct, extreme intoxication of 0.15 percent BAC or higher, property damage or serious injury or death to the player or a third party, and/or if the player has had prior drug- or alcohol-related misconduct.

Nothing in the policy calls for enhanced penalties due to prior speeding incidents unrelated to DUI. That’s important for Addison, because last year he was cited for driving 140 miles per hour.

The Bears have put an outstanding supporting cast around quarterback Caleb Williams, but the offensive line's unreliability in both play and availability could...

Patriots OL Jake Mathews has not played all year. He had a healthy rookie season at center for New England, missing only one game and primarily playing special teams snaps. He was on the Patriots' PUP list and was placed on season-ending IR. No information has been given by the team regarding the injury the led to his being put on the list.

Brandon Aiyuk could have a new home in the coming days.

The 49ers have negotiated the frameworks for deals with the Browns and Patriots for the disgruntled wide receiver, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

It’s now in Aiyuk’s hands to see if he can work out a long-term contract with one of the two teams.

The article says the Browns could make this work if Amari Cooper is involved. Cooper would have a direct cap hit of $22 million if traded. It would be cheaper not to deal him. I don't who manages the cap for the Browns, but he has to be the executive of the year if they pull off this Aiyuk trade.

Meh.... Would anyone here be offended if someone described as a "Houston fan" took a leak on Bud Adams' grave?
There are several glaring differences in Modell's vs Adams' move, least of which was that as opposed to Modell who agreed that the new Browns team would retain the Browns' name, colors, history, records, awards, and archives.................none of which Adams would agree to.

Yep, Browns eat dead cap money ~$7.5 m 2024 and ~22.5 next season. I can understand them wanting to get Aiyuk who is only 26 compared to 30 with Cooper; but eating 30 million dead cap when Cooper is still a thousand yard guy is just stupid in my opinion. Plus it appears they're going to give up at least a round two.

SF getting Cooper for $1.210 m would be amazing!

Pretty much every NFL owner is a scumbag who will leave at the drop of a hat if they can't get their grubby hands in taxpayers' pockets. But if you want to judge the level of scumbagitry, go for it.

Christian McCaffrey has just suffered a calf tear and the team does not expect him to play again until the regular season. It should be noted the McCaffrey has had repeated soft tissue muscle issues dating back to 2016. He dealt with calf tears as recently as January 2023 and December 2023.

They should let Dak walk, or trade him

The medical examiner today released details behind his unexpected death in his sleep. At 40 years old, he died of from a heart disease caused by long-term poorly controlled high blood pressure. Unfortunately, he loved his alcohol...............something that is not compatible with high blood pressure problems. After 35. one drink a day can increase the risk for developing hypertensive disease............and can potentiate many blood pressure medications. leading to dangerously low pressure. Having a nightcap or 2 along with some pressure meds can lead to not waking up.

RIP, warrior.

Chiefs great Jim Kearney dies at 81
By Michael David Smith
Published August 7, 2024 05:03 AM

Jim Kearney, whose 12-year pro football career saw him win a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs, has died at the age of 81.

Kearney was a quarterback in college at Prairie View and a 1965 11th-round pick of the Lions. He moved to safety in the pros and played two seasons in Detroit before finding his greatest success in Kansas City, where he had a stretch of eight consecutive seasons in which he started every game.

“During his nine-year career in Kansas City, Jim was part of an AFL Championship team and helped lead the Chiefs defense to a 23-7 victory in Super Bowl IV,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said in a statement. “Jim first appeared in a Chiefs uniform in 1967, and for the next eight years, he never missed a game. And yet, the most impressive parts of Jim’s life happened off the field.

After his playing days, he became a high school teacher and coach. He mentored hundreds of children in the Kansas City area, and he will be remembered as a great player, a great teacher and a great man. My family and I send our deepest condolences to Shirley and the entire Kearney family.”

In 1972 Kearney returned four interceptions for touchdowns, a single-season pick-six record that Kearney owned a share of until Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland had five pick-sixes last year.

FA Justin Simmons visiting the Saints

Saints defensive coordinator Joe Woods was Simmons' defensive backs coach when the safety was drafted in 2016 and the Broncos DC the following two seasons. New Orleans' current defensive backs coach, Marcus Robertson, was also on the staff in Denver as DBs coach in 2017-18, so there is extensive familiarity for both the team and the player entering the visit.

Giants, Lions fined $200K each for fights at joint practices this week
By Josh Alper
Published August 7, 2024 10:20 AM

Joint practices at training camp have long been a hotbed for fights between teams and this week’s workouts involving the Giants and Lions were no exception.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Malik Nabers and Lions safety Kerby Joseph were among those who took part in the scuffles that marred practices on Monday and Tuesday between the team. Both clubs are now going to have to cough up some money as a result.

The NFL confirmed to multiple reporters that both teams are going to be fined $200,000 due to the brawls that broke out at the Giants’ training facility. The fines came after the league sent a memo to all teams last month that fighting and other “unprofessional conduct” will not be tolerated during joint practices.

That’s a shift from the league’s view on practice fights in the past, although it’s unclear if it will be sufficient to keep future fisticuffs from happening.

Tennessee Saahdiq Charles retires at 25.
The Titans are having some bad luck......................their LB Garret Wallow (former Texan) tore his pec in practice yesterday and is out for the season.
