NFL Random Thought of the Day

His back issue is a vertebral disc. He injured his L5 disc and suffered a bulging S1 disc resulting in a microdiscectomy before the 2021 draft. Ironically, this is what caused him to fall to the Titans at 22 overall despite being considered a legitimate top-15 prospect when healthy.

Thanks for the info, this is the only MB that I've found where you can get this type of info.

A few surprising to me:
WR- Perriman by Indy
CB- Greedy Williams by Eagles
@OptimisticTexan's favorite- Mims by Detroit

The Texans still haven’t had a WR ascend to the WR1 spot. I like Nico, and still do…..but he hasn’t done enough this camp to separate himself.

Mims would still be on the market b/c he’s still dealing with a slight injury. Someone will sign him, I’d like the Texans to be that team. Not to mention, he’d still be a low cost, high ceiling signing. There’d be little risk involved with bringing him in for a look-see.

You don’t think Nico has looked like our WR1?

He doesn’t look like a superstar but he’s definitely standing out on this team as a #1.

I think he needs to play with a chip on his shoulder and get mean!

Nico is going to surprise some posters this yr.

Gotta stay healthy though.

NFL puts Jaguars CB Chris Claybrooks on Commissioner Exempt list
By Josh Alper
Published August 29, 2023 01:30 PM

The Jaguars have not cut cornerback Chris Claybrooks, but he won’t be available to play for them for an indefinite amount of time.

The NFL has placed Claybrooks on the Commissioner Exempt list. He will not be eligible to practice or play while he is on the list and will not count against the 53-man roster, but will still be paid as if he’s on the active roster.

Claybrooks was arrested twice this offseason on domestic violence charges. He reached a settlement to close the case related to an April arrest before being arrested in July after a different incident.

Claybrooks was a 2020 seventh-round pick. He has 81 tackles and a fumble recovery in 46 games with the team.

Colts found no trade partner for RB Johnathan Taylor............so he will stay with the Colts, who will put him on short-term IR for at least 4 weeks during which time the Colts will have to determine what to ultimately do with him.

Greedy is said to have been given minimal play time last year, reportedly because of the talent on the team. However, this is not exactly factual. He suffered a severe axillary nerve injury his rookie year. After returning, his career has been lackluster. Last year he was targetted only 8 times, but allowed 7 receptions. His arm is still feeling some residual of the injury. The axillary nerve controls the movements of the upper extremity and pain and sensation of the arm.

Nico doesn’t impress me much. He has great size but he’s not a great route runner, has avg speed, avg hands at best, and isn’t shifty. He doesn’t get great separation either. What is his super power that I am missing. A #1 needs a super power, or multiple sp’s if they are elite.
Collins is basically Micheal Gallup.

A good NFL WR. Well worth a 3rd rd pick. He's got great hands and size with enough but not great speed.

Von Miller will be staying on the PUP recovering from his Thanksgiving Day ACL/meniscus surgery. He will be out at least 4 weeks, but is unlikely to demonstrate decent performance before the second half of the season. What's interesting is the surgery was planned for a meniscus surgery only. When they got in there, they discovered that they had missed the torn ACL upon physical AND MRI.

Via Brady Henderson of ESPN.com, first-round receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba returned to the practice field on Tuesday, just days after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured wrist.

His left hand was heavily wrapped,” Henderson said, “but he seeatmed to be catching passes without much issue (save for one bobble in wet conditions).”

***********************************

Catching in practice is an altogether different animal. Being closely guarded in a regular game is not likely to end well with a heavily wrappped hand...........a bandaged hand/splint is not likely to protect from trauma to the hand/wrist on a contact play. Not to mention that with one fully functional hand, he may not be able to protect himself in general from heavy contact trauma. If the Seahawks put him out there for their opener they are risking a longer period of unavailability for a very promising rookie WR. Not exactly the smartest move no matter the outcome.

This would be negligent of Carroll to put him in there until the bone heals and that ain't gonna happen by week 1. How many weeks will it take for the wrist to heal? I would imagine falling on the wrist wrong would do even more damage causing him to miss even more time?

I didn't see the trades for guys like Ramsey OBJ etc... Did you? They got caught in limbo, they didn't spend money like the Rams or Bucks did and they couldn't draft like the Rams, Bucks did either. Havenstein, Kupp,Akers, Higbee, none were 1st Rd picks. This issue goes all the way back to Casserly. (Poor drafting in rds 2-5.) Of course it didn't help that BOB couldn't develop players.)

Now, I'm of the thought in a couple of years after Stroud gets some experience they should should trade 1st round picks for star level players because 1. Caserio, Ryans seem to be really good at picking players in rds 2-5. 2. After yr 3 David from the inner city is going to hold the McNair's hostage looking for a new contract for Stroud and ruin the Texans cap. So that's the window for this group to win a championship.

What do you think the trade for Tunsil was? That’s the map. Big trades that say F them picks. And that trade said F them to picks to a lot of picks. Texans spent money on the wrong players. How many got extended when they shouldn’t have? Rick Smith, OB and Easterby acting as the GM set the team back.

But they did try it the Rams and Bucs way. Texans just were stupid doing it. Traded away all the picks and spent money in the wrong places.

Bucs for sure are rebuilding. Rams are doing something. But I don’t think they are contenders anymore.

With this philosophy you've got to be able to draft well in rds 3-5. Something historically the Texans GM's before Caserio have been horrible at doing. I would feel much more comfortable doing this in a couple of yrs with Caerio/Ryans working together in the warroom.

Joe Burrows is still not practicing 33 days after his calf tear. Not surprising as I have posted repeatedly how unpredictable calf tears are.............except for the fact that they typically take longer than expected.........and are very susceptible to re-injury. The media is questioning if Burrows is conducting a "hold in." No, it's a grade II calf muscle tear and it is not unusual for it to take up to 6 weeks to rehab and return.

Bailey Zappe released. Pats now have 1 QB on roster… could they be calling the Texans?

I think you may be right....very unusual the Texans had 4 QB's on their 53-Man roster. They could be working out a deal as we speak. For once, maybe our FO can get the best of Belichick in a deal....that they desperately need to make. On a side note, the waiver wire doesn't look great in regards to QB's.

Good enough for the Steelers but not the Texans. Good for Mr. King. The Texans don't deserve him. Good, solid nickel corner and PR.

Sean McManus calls new Nielsen/Amazon arrangement “extremely odd and unfortunate”
By Mike Florio
Published August 30, 2023 09:54 AM

Nielsen’s proposed new approach to determining viewership for Amazon’s Thursday Night Football is frustrating executives at other networks. At one network, the executive in charge of the sports operation has sounded off.

Via Richard Deitsch of TheAthletic.com, CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus shared his views on the issue during a Tuesday conference call.

“A fair and accurate audience measurement across all platforms, as you know, is absolutely vital to our industry,” McManus said. “Anything that is not impartial and unbiased is unacceptable to us. I must say that we think it’s extremely odd and unfortunate that different rules are suddenly applying to one platform. I’ll leave it at that statement.”

Last year, Amazon’s internal numbers were 18 percent higher than the ratings calculated by Nielsen. This year, Nielsen will use data from Amazon in crafting the numbers, and the numbers will be higher.

Nielsen has offered to do the same thing for the streaming services maintained by other networks. Other networks have suggested that the offer is hollow and meaningless, with no specific steps identified on how to go about doing it. Nielsen has dismissed that concern as “silly.”

The NFL’s support of the new approach makes the situation more intriguing, since it pits the league against multiple broadcast partners on this issue. From the NFL’s perspective, however, the goal is obvious — keep the streaming numbers as high as possible, so that NFL games will be as valuable as possible when it’s time to put the packages out for bidding, again.

Michael Thomas: My body rejected hardware in ankle, toe surgeries
By Josh Alper
Published August 30, 2023 08:43 AM

Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas is as healthy as he’s been in years and on track to be on the field for the start of the regular season after playing in just 10 games over the last three seasons.

Ankle and toe surgeries were part of the reason for his absence. In both cases, hardware was inserted to help Thomas’ healing process but it did not wind up having the desired effect.

Thomas said that the recovery from both surgeries was complicated by his body’s resistance to the outside hardware.

""Your body responds and healing responds to it. Whatever, I guess is, the 1%? I guess I’m in that category. . . . I don’t want to use this as an excuse,” Thomas said, via Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. “But also, when you get surgeries and they put hardware in, sometimes your body rejects the hardware.”

Now that the wideout is healthy again, New Orleans will be hoping that any surgical issues will be part of Thomas’ past rather than his future.

Bill Belichick: Overspending teams can’t sustain success, eventually you pay the bills
By Michael David Smith
Published August 28, 2023 04:38 PM

Patriots coach Bill Belichick says that big spending sprees in free agency don’t lead to sustained success in the NFL.

Belichick said on WEEI that teams can get a one-year boost by giving players contracts with big signing bonuses and small cap hits in the first year, but eventually that money counts against the team’s salary cap, and those teams end up having a day of reckoning.

“Temporarily you can, but you can’t sustain it, no,” Belichick said, via MassLive.com. “You can’t sustain the 20 years of success that we sustained by overspending every year without having to eventually pay those bills and play with a lesser team. So I think if you look at the teams that have done that, that’s kinda where some of them ended up. Jacksonville back in ‘14, the Rams are going through it, Tampa is going through it now. So, I’m not saying there’s anything right or wrong with it. It’s just a different way of doing things and there’s the results for doing that.”

Asked why the Patriots are near the bottom of the league in the amount of cash they’ll spend on players in 2023, Belichick said that’s not relevant. What’s relevant is the salary cap, which the Patriots will spend to.

“Cash spending isn’t really that relevant. It’s cap spending,” Belichick said. “So teams that spend a lot of cash one year, probably don’t spend a lot of cash in the next year because you just can’t sustain that. So we’ve had high years, we’ve had low years, but our cap spending has always been high. And that’s the most competitive position you can be in. So that’s really — the cash spending, there’s no cash cap. There’s a salary cap and we spend to the salary cap. That’s what’s important.”

Ultimately, Belichick said, people who focus on any one year’s spending are overlooking what really goes into building a roster.

“You can’t look at it in a Polaroid snapshot,” Belichick said. “It’s a multi-year process. So you can overspend one year, and then at some point you’re not going to be able to do that.”
How much success has he had since Brady left?

Steve Wilks confirms burner-phone communications with Steve Keim during his 2018 suspension
By Mike Florio
Published August 30, 2023 05:02 PM

The Cardinals have a problem.

Former head coach Steve Wilks has confirmed in sworn testimony that he was told to communicate with suspended G.M. Steve Keim via burner phone during Keim’s 2018 suspension for drunk driving.

According to Tisha Thompson of ESPN.com, Wilks testified that he received a directive both from Keim and owner Michael Bidwill to remain in contact with Keim when Keim was technically off limits. Wilks also said that Bidwill and other executives communicated with Keim throughout his suspension.

The testimony came in the arbitration case filed by former Cardinals executive Terry McDonough, who alleged that Bidwill directed McDonough and Wilks to remain in contact with Keim.

“As much as we would like to share the truth of what transpired, the confidentiality order in place prohibits us from doing so,” the Cardinals said in a statement issued to ESPN.com.

Thompson points out that Wilks has not yet been questioned by Cardinals attorneys. But, frankly, what are they going to do? Badger him until he says he was lying?

Wilks, who is currently the 49ers defensive coordinator, said he only used his burner phone once to contact Keim, in response to a question regarding how things were going at practice.
“With me being a first-year head coach, I felt uncomfortable from the beginning that I worked this hard to get to this plateau and this opportunity, and then I was presented with this situation with being unethical,” Wilks said.

Wilks has his own lawsuit against the Cardinals, alleging racial bias in the decision to fire him (and not Keim) after a disastrous 2018 season.

The Cardinals have not denied that burner phones were used. They have strongly denied that Bidwill directed it or even knew about it, and that once Bidwill became aware he ordered the phones to be retrieved.

Wilks contradicted this assertion.

“No one retrieved the burner phones until Keim came back, so it wasn’t swift,” Wilks said, adding that the phones were gathered only after Keim “was back in the building.”

Wilks also said that Bidwill berated the coach on multiple occasions during his only year on the job. Wilks testified that, while driving home after one game with his nine-year-old son, Wilks called Bidwill.

“As soon as he picked up, it was just cuss words and how embarrassed he was about the game and can’t really, you know, bring friends or take anybody in the box,” Wilks said. His son later asked, “Daddy, why is that guy talking to you like that?”

The league has remained quiet about McDonough’s allegations against Bidwill. If/when the story gains enough traction, Mary Jo White could be hired to perform an investigation regarding Bidwill’s on-the-job behavior. If that ever occurs, anything can happen next.

I hope that the med staff nixes what is being proposed. But stupid seems to affect all those involved.

Seahawks hopeful Jaxon Smith-Njigba will play Week 1
By Charean Williams
Published August 30, 2023 10:29 PM

Seahawks rookie receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba practiced for the second day since wrist surgery, and the team is hopeful of his availability for the Sept. 10 season opener.

He’s doing remarkably well,” coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday, via Brady Henderson of ESPN. “I saw him respond to the injury at the outset, and then I saw him respond to when they told him he’s going to have to get operated on, and so I’m not surprised at the attitude that he’s brought post-surgery. He’s out here working, catching balls, catching punts, doing everything. He ain’t worried about it. It could have gone a number of different ways. It’s gone the way of the competitor. He’s not going to be denied. He wants to play football.”

Smith-Njigba, the 20th overall pick in April, broke a bone in his left wrist against the Cowboys on Aug. 19. He underwent surgery a week ago in Philadelphia.

Smith-Njigba had his hand heavily wrapped during Wednesday’s practice, according to Henderson.

“I think it’s a great statement about his competitiveness and his mentality,” Carroll said. “He’s not going to be held out. He’s going for it. Really, you couldn’t ask for more. You couldn’t ask for a better approach, and then his discipline about coming out and working and getting everything done. He hasn’t even flinched. Awesome.”

Smith-Njigba is expected to be the team’s third receiver behind Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, and Carroll said he’s “hoping” Smith-Njigba will be ready for Week 1 against the Rams.
“I don’t know,” Carroll said. “We’ll see what happens. He looks great right now.”

Giants opt for 10 captains in 2023
By Mike Florio

Published August 30, 2023 07:50 PM

Daniel Jones will get a “C” on his jersey. Nine other Giants will, too.

The Giants have opted to name 10 total captains for the 2023 season. Ten. That seems excessive. Presumably, coach Brian Daboll has a reason for it.

In addition to Jones, the others captains will be running back Saquon Barkley, tackle Andrew Thomas, tight end Darren Waller, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, defensive tackle Leonard Williams, linebacker Bobby Okereke, cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, safety Xavier McKinney, and kicker Graham Gano.

The honor is largely ceremonial in the NFL, conferring no real duties or responsibilities during game day. Primarily, the status sends a message to the locker room. But with 53 players on the active roster, what is the message when nearly 20 percent of the team has the captain designation?

Holy crappolo Batman....the Giants have gone woke and established "Participation Captains". Why stop at 10? Wouldn't want to hurt the feelings of the other 38 players that would be standing on the sidelines heaving, saying, I hate you Joe Schoen between sobs, and blowing snot bubbles b/c they didn't get included in the coin toss.

You can throw Burrow out there opening day. But he won't be anywhere close to 100%. No doubt he will be able to play, but will not be able to play well out of the pocket.....limited mobility. If he does try to push it, re-injury is a significant risk.

Ja’Marr Chase: Joe Burrow looks good, having him healthy is the most important thing
By Michael David Smith

Published August 31, 2023 05:18 AM

When Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a calf injury in training camp, his close friend and teammate Ja’Marr Chase said he thought Burrow should take his time and heal up, even if it means missing the start of the regular season. Burrow returned to practice on Wednesday, so it looks like missing the start of the season won’t be necessary.

Chase still says that Burrow getting healthy and staying healthy is the Bengals’ top priority, but he says that from what he could tell on the practice field, Burrow is ready to play.

“He looked good. I didn’t see hobbling, I didn’t see much. He doesn’t look like he’s having any problems,” Chase said. “When Joe’s out there, it’s a little more dialed in. He’s stayed positive about the whole situation. It’s all about the health and how he feels. That’s the most important thing this year. We want to get him back, make sure he’s healthy, 100 percent healthy.”

From all indications, Burrow will be on the field when the Bengals start the season in Cleveland on September 10.

That doesn't change the general validity of the premise.
Yeah it does. Their success was driven by the GOAT if qbs , not because they managed the cap greatly. It was Brady taking massive salary cuts during his prime and had to overcome and manage players and positions. That's an outlier, not the norm. Since Brady and his paycuts are gone, what have the Patriots accomplished?

To be fair to Belichick now, who do the Patriots have on their roster to pay? Matt Juden? They paid him. The rest of their roster looks like the 2021-22 Texans. If the Patriots had traded for Aaron Rodgers, DeAndre Hopkins, and Jonathan Taylor, they still aren't Super Bowl contenders.

One of the problems Brady had near the end is he was taking far less than market value, yet look at the players he had to throw to his last couple of years. That was an issue. It was an issue when they traded Moss and let Welker go also, but Brady just played the good soldier.
