NFL Random Thought of the Day

The Colts GM had a press conference similar to ours. The only difference is he doesn’t speak in full word salad but does go into that language.

The Colts and Texans are in very similar places right now.

A GM on the hot seat. A QB need that can be solved in the upcoming draft. And we are competing for the same HCs.

It will be interesting to see this play out.

The comments in the link are much like my feelings on this situation. NFL shoves gambling down everyone's throat..........then finds ways to go after a non NFL player, non-NFL personnel who bleeds orange and brown. :hankpalm:

Browns say they had no choice but to severe ties with Bernie Kosar after he violated NFL rules
Posted by Charean Williams on January 8, 2023, 7:54 PM EST

The Browns severed ties with Bernie Kosar after he acknowledged on social media that he placed a legal $19,000 bet on the Browns to beat the Steelers.

On Sunday morning, Kosar tweeted that his “services are no longer desired or needed” on the team’s pregame radio show.

The Browns released a statement after Sunday’s game.

“Earlier this week, we notified Bernie that per league policy we were required to remove him from our pregame radio coverage for the season finale after he violated the NFL gambling policy by placing a bet on an NFL game,” the Browns wrote, via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “We understand what Bernie means to his community and our history but as a team contracted personnel hired to provide content on our media platforms, his bet was a violation of NFL rules and we must adhere to all NFL policy.”

Former NFL running back, 1979 Heisman Trophy winner Charles White dies at 64
Former NFL running back Charles White, who won the 1979 Heisman Trophy, died of cancer Wednesday in Newport Beach, California, USC announced. White was 64.
White, who led the Trojans to the 1978 national championship, remains the school’s career rushing yards leader with 6,245. He scored 49 touchdowns.
Most people remember OJ, Marcus Allen, Reggie Bush or even Ricky Bell, but "Charlie" White out-gained them all during his time at USC...rest easy.

Hamlin is now back at his home in Buffalo with his family. He went through a series of comprehensive medical evaluations as well as a series of cardiac, neurological and vascular testing on Tuesday.
Dr. Jamie Nadler, critical care physician and chief quality officer at Kaleida Health, which runs Buffalo General, and the care team lead for Hamlin, said in a statement: "We have completed a series of tests and evaluations, and in consultation with the team physicians, we are confident that Damar can be safely discharged to continue his rehabilitation at home and with the Bills."

NFL’s new postseason overtime rule means game doesn’t end with a TD on first possession
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 12, 2023, 4:55 AM EST

In last year’s playoffs, the Bills and Chiefs played one of the greatest games in NFL history, but it was a game that left many fans feeling unfulfilled: It ended with the Chiefs receiving the overtime kickoff and scoring the game-winning touchdown on the opening possession. Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who had played a brilliant game, never touched the ball in overtime.

This year, that won’t happen: The NFL changed its playoff overtime rules in the offseason, and now postseason games won’t end with a touchdown on the opening possession of overtime.

Now if a team scores a touchdown on the first possession of overtime, it will line up to kick an extra point or attempt a two-point conversion. Then that team will kick off, and the other team will get a chance to score a touchdown. If that team does score a touchdown, it will line up for an extra point or two-point conversion of its own. It’s possible that the game can end at that point: For instance, if the first team kicked an extra point, the second team can try a game-ending two-point conversion attempt. But if the score remains tied after both teams’ touchdowns, at that point the team that scored the second touchdown would kick off again, and from there on it would be sudden-death overtime.

The new rules could lead to some new strategies: Some coaches may actually prefer to kick off to begin overtime, on the thinking that they’d rather know what the other team has done when they get the ball, and know if they need to play for a touchdown or can settle for a field goal. Some coaches may be more aggressive about going for two after a touchdown.

There is still one scenario in which both teams don’t get a possession in overtime: If the team kicking off to start overtime scores a safety on the receiving team’s initial possession, the team that kicked off is the winner without ever possessing the ball. For instance, if the kickoff returner gets tackled deep in his own territory, and then on the next play the quarterback is sacked in his own end zone, that safety ends the game.

Unlike regular-season overtime, which is 10 minutes long, playoff overtime is essentially starting a new game: Teams will play 15-minute periods until there is a winner. If there’s been no winner after two 15-minute periods, there will be another kickoff to start the third overtime period, although there won’t be a halftime break between periods. Needing to go to a third overtime period has never happened in NFL history.

The bolded above leaves me confused............whose QB?.......the team which originally kicked off?

Scenario: the Texans play the Bengals in the AFC Championship and the game goes to overtime. The Bengals win the toss and elect to receive. Fairbairn's kickoff is received 5 yards deep in the endzone but the Bengals decide to return it and the returner is stuffed at the Bengals 2 yard line. On 1st down, Joe Burrow drops back into the endzone to pass and is sacked in the endzone by Maliek Collins for a safety. Game over and we go to the Super Bowl!

Raiders evaluating trade market for QB Derek Carr
's unceremonious benching brought his tumultuous 2022 season to an abrupt end. It also set him on a course for a potential split from the Raiders.
Such a divorce now appears more likely as the Raiders have begun the process of evaluating Carr's trade market, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday.

No surprise there

Regarding 2022 Mr. Irrelevant:

Per THE ATHLETIC:
It is still surprising the top rookie passer this season was literally the final pick of the 2022 draft. Call him a ‘caretaker’ or ‘game manager’ or whatever, but Brock Purdy was (by far) the most efficient and reliable first-year quarterback during the regular season. He took care of the football and led all rookies in passing touchdowns with 13, six more than Kenny Pickett despite Pickett attempting 219 more passes.

Carr has a no trade clause he can exercise
i wouldn't understand him waiving it, he should nix any trade & force them to cut him before his $$$ kicks in...why weaken the team you intend to play for?
sign w/them and keep the draft picks.
He would have to have a lot of faith that he could sign a contract that will pay him $40M as a free agent but it may be a moot point as his salary becomes guaranteed a month before they can officially trade him.

Hmm...i didn't consider that factor

Browns center Ethan Pocic are among the players on the top 100 list FAs now..........He is No. 45 on the list. Pocic was a top-five blocker in both run and pass blocking. This year for the Browns, Pocic made 13 starts after Nick Harris went down with a season-ending injury. After being signed to just be a depth option, Pocic looked like a top-end center in the leage. Certainly a FA worth kicking the tires for a team like the Texans...........if the price is right.

More sportsradio myths being blown out of the water...

Of course I wouldn't debate this as to Peyton Manning's ridiculous experience as a player, because duh..

But I believe the notion of the 'halftime adjustment' is more on the coach's end of things. ie, winding down the end of the 2nd quarter trying to summarize the things that have or haven't worked and taking a few minutes with the staff - while Peyton et al are peeing and having oranges - to drill down a few quick thoughts and tweaks to those things that aren't working or could work better. Then coming into the start of the 3rd quarter looking at opportunities to implement any fresh ideas into the mix as the game develops.

The idea of having a whole different philosophy or scheme from one half to the next is a mislabeled, if not completely overblown, suggestion. But taking a minute to stop, regroup, put heads together minus the in-game competition, and try and deliver a better plan of action is what good coaches should, and do, in every game week in and week out. The quick and convenient, and oft misunderstood, labeling of this concept as a simple 'halftime adjustment' is what's been watered down for criticism sake.

This exactly, but also Peyton is lying. Ain't no way a guy who played the game at such a cerebral level didn't make a single halftime adjustment in his entire career. Yeah sure, Peyton just went into the locker room and ate orange slices and took a whizz like he was in little league...for every single game of his almost 20 year career....

I think they are just trying to be funny or something.

EDIT: And here is an actual quote from Manning when he played in Denver:

QB PEYTON MANNING On 71-yard touchdown play “Well, it was a little different play—it was a screen pass. We were running the ball on a similar formation in the first half, and [Pittsburgh] kept blitzing off the back side—so it was a kind of half-time adjustment. We thought we could fake that run to the strong side and throw him a screen, but it showed up for a big play. We weren’t thinking an 80-yard touchdown—maybe a 9-yard gain is kind of what I was thinking—so it sure was a nice surprise. Some really good blocking on that play; [G] Zane [Beadles] had a good block and [T] [Ryan] Clady … [WR] Matt Willis came all the way from the back side to get the safety, and, of course, [WR] Demaryius [Thomas] did a majority of the work and really turned it on with great speed. Just a huge play. This was just an interesting game only having the ball for a couple plays in the third quarter.”

Besides Peyton's quote there are other players and coaches who talked about half time adjustments in there as well.

I think it's more about semantics. Peyton was his own OC, he made adjustments in realtime. I used to love to see how l9ng it took for him to figure out the opposing defense. Well except when he played the Texans, usually had them figured out by the third snap.

Is he leaving football? Is this a jump on getting fired? Does this reflect on any Jackson leaving possibilities? Inquiring minds want to know

I think this, jmo of course, is Baltimore handing Roman the pink slip in the most professional manner they know how, which is to say pretty kindly so. They can both say it was a mutual parting of ways and each can go on about whatever they'd like.

Harbough also followed this up by saying there's a '200% chance Lamar stays on as their QB'. So unless they're still palming a card they appear to want to re-sign Lamar and retool the offense, however that may be.
