4. HOUSTON TEXANS
Houston is a defensive success story that should give everyone on this list hope. After plugging holes at safety with Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid over the offseason, one of the worst units in the league turned around to be one of the best. All four starters earned grades of 74.7 or above, while Kareem Jackson had a career year at 85.7 overall.

With this post I bid adieu to you guys Im unplugging from football until the draft. What I see out there isnt what the majority seem to see and im just spent emotionally trying to wonder what happened, what can happen and to listen to the cacophony of excuse makers. (me included)

THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR!!

This team is going absolutely nowhere until Marvin L. O'Brien is long gone.

This team, as usual, was a paper tiger and required an incredible amount of luck to get to 11-5 vs. one of the best schedules you'll ever see while remaining relatively healthy (sans WR).

This was a 500 team (at best) masquerading for a year as a division winner. They will be exposed next year and the Colts will take control of this division and the Texans will be lucky to get to 500.

It almost doesn't matter to me what they do in the offseason because with OB at the helm, it's got no chance of helping in any major way. The only way this coach wins is to have 53 pro-bowlers. This guy is awful. He's so bad it's a joke. I wanted Kubiak gone and he deserved to be gone - but between the two, I'd take Kubiak all day long, every day 365 days a year over this fraud.

The only way I could possibly get excited for next year is if he gets a real OC with some nuts and some creativity and he can work in a largely autonomous fashion - especially on game day. I've got better odds of growing hair into dreadlocks then that happening. And I'm a 55 year old nearly bald white man. So...ya, I'm not counting on that happening.

The Texans were closer to the team that barely beat Buffalo than the 3rd seed in the AFC . They better hit on some drafts .

Next year the Texans face Mahomes, Rivers, Luck and Brees on the road. At home they have Matt Ryan, Brady, Cam Newton and Luck at home.

Should be fun!
For a certainty, the Texans need to upgrade at the corner position and Romeo needs to adjust and be more aggressive in his play calling. The defense will get carved up by these elite quarterbacks if they don't change their philosophy. Romeo needs to figure out how to take away the opposing teams strengths while attacking their weaknesses. Bend don't break won't do it. The Texans defense will have to be able to stop opposing offenses at any point on the field especially on 3rd downs and limit the opposing teams big play ability.
On offense, the play calling needs to be allot more aggressive and explosive in order to keep up with these teams. O'Brien needs to find a good offensive mind to run this offense and use all of the weapons to their abilities and strengths.
This season will surely test the Texans coaching staff and players to the extreme. They had better be prepared and up to the task against the teams on this schedule or it will be a rough season.

luckily, i don't get paid to make these decisions, because I don't have the answers to the problems -- but this franchise has problems:

1.) Head Coach + QB:

+ consistently wins more games than he should, beats teams with similar or inferior quarterbacks, has shown ability to be creative within an offensive system, doesn't blow leads, defense seems like it's good because of JJ and the way BOB calls plays to limit their exposure
- consistently loses to good teams, teams never seem to show up for Thursday/Sunday night/Monday night/playoff games that matter (like the Eagles game), way too predictable with the play calling (1st down rush % this season: 60% give or take a hair -- it's a passing league), defense isn't actually good when you play anyone worth a ****.

they seem to have a good vibe together, but 4 doesn't have the same Clemson magic he did. Granted this happens (hi Jameis, Cam, Vince Young, Matt Leinart -- the college winners don't necessarily stay winners) -- BOB has to coax that magic back at out of him at this level, as he's got all the tools to do it.

2.) Wide Receivers

We've never had 2 good ones at the same time. Fuller can't be counted on to play 16 games until he actually plays 16 games. Nuk is 80 all over again, freaking Paul McCartney but instead of Ringo, John, or George he met Carl Lewis singing the national anthem and 2 kids playing kazoo after school -- just a straight one man band. We've never had an impact tight end, and I don't need to see the Owen Daniels stats -- Gronk, Gates, Gonzalez, Kelce he was not. And while I'm sure Garrett Griffin, Ryan Griffin, Fiederowicz, James Casey, Joel Dressen, and the rest of the island of misfit toys are all wonderful people -- they're not breaking any games open either. Any production out of the position has always been scheme related, from Kubiak throwbacks to BOB's little stick routes and screens. Someone has to show up. Pittsburgh has gone through Wallace, Holmes, Brown, Bryant, Smith-Schuster, Switzer, Washington, Miller/James @ TE, Parker-Bettis-Bell-Connor at RB. We've got to be able to find some talent at these positions with the way the NFL is designed to be played now.

3.) O-Line

Brandon Brooks is still a stud for the Eagles. Ben Jones has started every game since he signed with the Titans. Duane Brown, would have been nice to have this year -- but will be mitigated if they hit on this 2nd round pick. Bad luck on injuries -- Derek Newton tears up both knees in one play? Seantrel plays 3 snaps and breaks? -- and the whiff on XSF hampered this team. The OL got a worse reputation that it deserved this year in pass pro, as 4 acts like he's allergic to throwing the ball away rather than taking a sack when he's rolling out, is 4 yards behind the line and is approaching the sideline, and there's no one open -- but for a team that ran the ball on 1st down 3 out of 5, we sure as **** didn't see a lot of 2 & 6's or better. BOB isn't changing -- he likes a 24-21 game with 27 cumulative rushing attempts like I like beans in my chili -- so they've got to find them in this draft and they've got to be good right away and for a little while.

4.) D-Line

Watt's beyond description. Clowney is just something else to watch. Everyone else is a rotation piece - I like them, but Angelo Blackson could be DJ Reader could Antonio Smith could be Amobi Okoye could be Travis Johnson. Pay 90 and pray he stays healthy.

5.) Back 7

Mercy is overpaid and overrated. Made no impact this season. I'd DeMeco him sooner than later. Cunningham and McKinney are studs, but they can't cover TE's worth a ****. this team was #1 defending RBs catching the ball and #32 against TEs catching the ball. after watching what the Chargers just did with 3 safeties to the Ravens, I want that. Mathieu does his best Derwin James, Reid and Hal come back, J-Jo. K. Jo. A. Co. and Kareem I'd run it back with, but they've got to figure something out schematically to do something to limit TY and Ebron.

I, like you, love this team. This was predictable -- if they were a legit team this year, they beat the Iggles and don't have to play this week. Here's hoping they find that, because with the right people staying healthy and a little bit of improvement and some avoidance of regression to the mean on winning close games -- they could get to 10-12 wins again next season, and legitimately challenge for a title.

There's a path to get there, but until they win a game like the Eagles or Pats game this year, there's no reason to take them seriously as a contender.

Both OL and secondary needs improvement in the offseason, but to be practical about it, they’re not going to fix both.

The OL should take precedence over the two. You’re not going to improve the defense enough to shut down the likes of Mahomes and Luck. The only thing you can do is improve the OL with some good young people in the draft just like the Chiefs and the Colts are doing.

The priority just be to keep Watson on the field more and the defense less.

If you try to fix everything, you’ll end up fixing nothing. We finally have the quarterback. NOW, PROTECT HIM!

Focus on that and absolutely nothing else!!

I dont think this roster is that good. The good news is they have cap room , a qb, and the youngest roster in the nfl. I also dont think OB has any rhythm as a play caller or as a play constructor. RAC from what it appears played alot of zone to compliment the offense. Bend , dont break, try to limit the points, dont give up big plays, lack of secondary speed. When I watch the Texans defense, they seem to lack speed again and swarming ability, which goes back to speed again. The biggest negative are the Colts. They're further along with their roster plus Luck is back and a boatload of cap money. That's what will make this division hard, but at least the Texans have their qb. They need more speed in the backfield, a short term or maybe long term replacement for Fuller, and faster, man coverage db's. I've stated for yrs, Devlin has to go. Dallas hired Alexander who was known as a great oline coach. The oline struggled, he was fired, houch came back, the Texans bust took over for the 1st rd pick and played well. Why didn't XSF play as well for the Texans as he did for the Cowboys? Coaching. How come Larry Izzo can be fired after 1 season, but Devlin is still coaching the worse unit?

Word of advice partner. It's not good to antagonize members of this board that have been here for years while you're brand new here. Why? A 1st, 2 2nds & and a couple premium FAs (3 OL & 2 CBs) will fix both.

Naw fam...... NEGATIVE..... I know what I read on this board lol
So do I and you're wrong. The MB predominantly wanted Kubiak to have an OC making at least initial calls and he was a far more proven & respected as a play caller than OB.

What the hell is a complimentary running game to OB's offense?

Are you claiming there are zero worthwhile RBs in the upcoming draft? Marlon Mack was a 4th rounder and just tore up the league not just us.

What would be complimentary would be a lot more ZBS with the line looking the same on pass & rush with Watson having movement & options. But that's coaching primarily. It's also the game Miller is built for more than the current system.

Sounds like the Texans should hire Kubes back as OC and Gibbs for O-line Coach! That would stir the pot up pretty good on this MB! :D

I've found that once every 8-10 days is sufficient but hey, to each his own.

But absolutely, best attitude to take. Until this season I was overly invested in the team emotionally. Best football season I've had in years was mostly about stepping back and not watching football like someone whose life or death depended on the outcome.
Well, not EVERY day... but it was a weekend...

Not even in the slightest. The Texans existence over the last 5 years has. The Colts had nothing to do with it. Can't ruin my life if I didn't expect anything else but that exact result to happen.

Why didn't XSF play as well for the Texans as he did for the Cowboys? Coaching?
Maybe. What else could be the reason? Playing time experience? Reshaping the body to adapt to the position? Not being injured? What else?

Why is coaching the first thing that comes to mind? Convenience?

It is a known variable. Your 'get the coach out of jail' scenarios are pure speculation or bunk.

Reshape the body - still on coaching even if your speculation is true.
Experience - BS. He had 4 years here.
Injuries - he didn't have many. He played 45 games in a row to end his time in Houston.

So coaching isn't just 1st thing that pops to mind. It's the glaring logical answer.

Logical answer is he got fat and lazy and sucked.

In fact he still sucks, but it's easier to look like a poor OG playing next to Tyron Smith than the total suckage he looked like playing next to Clark/Davenport. BTW with XSF playing next to Lewan and Vrabel cutting him should let people know how bad XSF realy is and how much $$$$ that lazy bast**d really basically stole.

But carry on with your narrative, how many of the guys that were cut by the Texans last offseason and have managed to hang around the NFL still suck? Replacement level players at best.

Next season Obrien and staff really need to teach Watson the beautiful art of the hard count. They also needs to drive home ( protect your damn self) meaning throw the ball away. Stop taking all the sacks and unnecessary hits.

Yes I want another OC. But will Obrien micromanage him. Will he allow him to do his job. Will Obrien try to force the weekly change in the offensive scheme.

Gaines will do a great job again in acquiring what we need. But will those additions be coached up properly. Will those players hold up because it seem these players come here to get hurt.

I like RAC but I truly think his time has come and gone. It's time for a change.

How about this: How many players on the oline have been developed and turned into at least a pro bowl or alternate under Obrien/Devlin? After you research that, let's research that same thing under Kubiak.
Winston was a 3rd rd pick, Myers was traded for a 5th rd pick and Duane Brown was the last tackle taken in the 1st rd. Show me 1 player on the Texans oline who has developed and is as good as any of those 3. I wont even mention Wade Smith who we got for peanuts from KC. It all happened within 3 yrs also. I will wait for your answer.

You'd think, given the Texans have played 3-4 for most of their existence, that Texans fans would know better. The majority of 3-4 OLBs were college 4-3 DEs. There's nothing square peg in a round hole to it. The primary pass rushers in a 4-3 are the DEs, in a 3-4 it's the OLBs. If anything it's more square peg in a round hole to take a college 4-3 OLB and expect him to become a primary pass rusher in a 3-4.

Kinda obvious from basic alignment:
Not so much since Wade. We don't play a true 3-4...

We play a 4-3 where the DE opposite Jj stands up. He doesn't drop in coverage like a 4-3 OLD, but rushes like a 3-4 OL.

Jj rarely plays over the tackle & our NT rarely plays over the Center. Or NT plays like an under tackle & our DE (3-4) opposite Jj plays like an over tackle.
