New Plan to Save the Astrodome

This is why this city's flood water drainage is TERRIBLE.

How is it terrible? Houston is actually a marvel in terms of how its drainage system works. In our industry… we refer Houston to be the concrete wasteland that moves massive amounts of water on its roads. It’s a swamp. Its concrete roads direct water back into the bayous. We aren’t the Bayou city for no reason. How much water sits in and the areas receives in the entire east Texas all the way to Mississippi is astronomical when compared to other major metropolitan cities. Sure… Houston’s gonna flood. Stay at home and let the roads do their job. We’ll definitely be back to work faster than the folks in NYC if a hurricane hit them. And sorry to say but our drainage was better than the levee system out in Nawlins.

Texas Live
yes and thank you.

The son of my wife's best friend went there a couple of years ago and thought Texas Live was awesome. He was single, around 30 from Huntsville AL looking for a good time at a place that is not available where he was from. Texas Live was perfect.

I went to dinner with someone...found it loud, busy and confusing to move around. Not where I want hangout at this point in my life as a non-drinker, mid 50s guy

Oh I'm counting on it being fully fleshed out.... Let me know if you'd like some Deadpool services, pro bono my good friend
Say what ! Deadpool services: sounds I dunno, interesting ?
Tell me more ? What is/are "Deadpool services" ?

Saying that it’s “better” than other major metropolitan areas isn’t exactly the flex that you think it is brother. NY isn’t built for flooding..just like our electrical grid apparently wasn’t built to deal with extreme cold…plus they have a whole underground world of subway system and tracks to account for that we don’t. We on the other hand are supposed to be built to deal with flooding better than we do. Yet every damn year we look silly at least once with pretty much the same areas getting flooded out. How many times exactly did the Meyerland area have to flood out residents along that Bayou before city planning officials realized that we probably should take away some of this nice pretty concrete laid down in that Bayou to allow the water to drain away at closer to the same rate it’s falling? A lot of those Residents eventually just had enough and either moved or had their houses put on higher than normal elevations b/c the flooding over there has just been so repeatedly bad ever time a decent sized tropical storm hits..& that’s been since I lived out on the south side of Houston back in the 90’s.

The Bear Creek area continues to be a disaster and yet out of greed, city officials STILL continue to allow builders to build new homes smack dab in the middle of it…even tho the area has flooded out residents twice before …& that’s not even counting Harvey which hit and wiped everyone out. This, even as they continue to over develop that west side…which eventually is just gonna make the likelihood of flooding around that area worse & cause that reservoir to fill up faster and consequently overflow..

288 is underwater at least once every few years. And certain areas of Kingwood get a makeover every other year due to Lake Houston overflowing.

Seems they just trial and error things only to be back at the drawing board spending our tax dollars to “fix” some **** that they said/thought was gonna fix the last fix; just doing crap to continuously remediate the drainage system when 1 of those supposed 100 year flood storms comes through. Newsflash folks, those storms aren’t every 100 years anymore they’re once every few years here mostly b/c of how this city has so drastically altered its landscape with concrete and urban development.

I love the Astrodome. I also love the SS United States and I loved the Shamrock Hotel. I love a lot of things that are not going to be here forever and eventually I just reached a point where I don't care anymore. If someone has enough vision and money to make something happen then they need to do it. I just watched a couple of candidates burn what? $2 billion dollars plus trying to get elected President. Elon gave away millions to promote voting or something like that. Money is everywhere. There's plenty of money to do things like that but if nobody wants to do it then it isn't happening. You can tap the public coffers for a lot of things but there are limits to what people will allow. I'm just glad those limits allowed for the USS Texas to get restored and I'm not going to spend any more time feeling bad about nobody coming through to save the Astrodome. It's time to move on for me.

Astrodome was really nice... in 1968

Now I'm apathetic towards it. It's an eyesore but I don't have to look at it except when they show the shots of NRG from the blimp. It can go away or be converted and I don't care if it costs me nothing. Blow it up or designate it a historical landmark, whose daily life is going to be affected?

I’m in the company of… letting it become… blight. One billion dollars is insane. Be cheaper to just build a new police station to handle the homeless camps that’ll form there.

Apparently a lot of people ..some in here act as if that whole 1 billion dollar price tag is gonna show up on only their property tax bill.

I’m posting in this thread a lot, but I don’t want people to get the idea that I care THAT much. I live in Humble so not in the actual city..but I do go in a lot for various reasons. In reality tho, I’m actually a lot like u in this regard..apathetic. I honestly had more of a nostalgic connection with Astroworld than the dome…& it’s been gone.

My main interest in it is what I said in my initial post.. the amusement of hearing people’s thoughts on things like this vs. what they actually do when the opportunity arises to do actually have something done about it..”I want something done with it, it’s an eyesore…..but I don’t want to have to pay for it…have some other billionaire pay for it…like, what??…

They will tell us whatever we want to hear to get it passed, then they will switch it up on us. Don't believe me? I'm old enough to remember when the toll roads were supposed to be "temporary" and as soon as it was paid off, it would be converted to a normal highway. That was in 1983. This I understand. The state government and city governments have proven they cannot be trusted to remain within the terms of the bills or projects they present to us. It's now clicking with me what CnD's original objection was. That considered, there still needs to be a solution for the dome, and this may be the best option even if it comes with the routine siphoning of funds by the regular political frauds.

Tear it down, dig a deep hole and have a giant fishing pond.

Please do.

The largest concrete pond in the world
Make it porcelain, shape it like a massive toilet bowl and when you fire any of the coaches.... make them "walk the tank" and jump in.....

It could be Houstons gladiator games.

Either give us a team we can watch... or get flushed.... but we will be entertained one way or another.

Thumbs up you get a waterslide to your car with towels waiting.

Thumbs down you end up in the bayou.

This sounds like Texas Live, what Arlington has around all the stadiums they host (Cowboys, Rangers, and the old Rangers park). Just don't know why you need to keep the Astrodome for it.

lol, I’m much older and still like to hangout after some of the games. Sometimes I will get a table and enjoy watching riders fall off the mechanical bull, eat Lockhart’s bbq, or have a beer in that open area that gets cold in the winter.

when I stay overnight on trips I prefer there than going back to hotel early. I was there last year during the World Series and it was fun watching the Rangers fans there watching the game had have a great time second to what was happening next door. It is nice though for all fans who Lao like to meet and chat with fellow fans.

I don’t know if there will be a big crowd tomorrow unless before the game since it will be ending late on a week night.
